Re: 3494 and tapes question.

2003-01-16 Thread Imre Csatlos
Hi,
If you can't expand your library capacity here are some tips for you:

1. Move your archive data offsite if possible.. Archive retention is
based on time, not on versions like backups. You can organize the space
reclamations better .
2. You don't have to put back a tape as soon as it needs to be reclaimed.
Write a scipt that checks the reclaimable space on your offsite volumes, and
move them onsite when you have more of them, or on a regular basis.
3. Organize your vault, especially if you have a lot of tapes offsite. At my
site we mainly do archiving,
so I have separate shelves for different retention time archives.

4. As for restores: either you check manually for required tapes when doing
a restore, or you can set up some scripts to query the tsm server. In my
case I wrote a small C code to let the TSM server log its messages to the
standard Unix syslog service (I can send it for you, runs on AIX). Since we
have a separate server for collection and analyzing syslogs, I just put a
new rule into the syslog analyzer to send me (or the operators) a mail when
a tape request arives from the TSM server (check out Logsurfer. Its free,
and quite good.). A simple reply to the mail checkes in the media. (It needs
to be put into the library first, of course. :) )

I hope this helps you, but again: you should avoid offsite volumes. It's
just a pain in the lib. :)

Hi TSMers

I am looking at what to do in the next year or so when our tape library
becomes full. Baring in mind that we don't do much in the way of restores
(most backups are for DR), is it feasible to remove tapes from the library
and just keep them on site in case they are requested for a restore,
reclamation etc. Does anyone out there do this kind of thing and how does
it work for you?

Thanks all

Re: 5.1.6 Fix

2003-01-15 Thread Imre Csatlos
I had a core dump yesterday on a 5.1.6.0 TSM server (AIX).
After reading this letter I tried to click on a node from the web browser,
and the server produced a core dump
for the first try. The query node from the command line client works ok.

My customer here encountered that. The only time we have seen it core
dump was when an admin went in through the web browser, drilled down to
nodes and clicked on a specific node.

Again, IBM/Tivoli aren't following the strictest QA methodology in
verifying stability of this product.

For those running 5.1.6.0 and are having the core dump problems I just
heard that the release 5.1.6.1 is being pushed back to 2/14. I also
heard support recommended pulling 5.1.6.0 off the ftp site due to these
core dumps.

Re: 64 Bit Oracle TDP

2002-12-19 Thread Imre Csatlos
Hi,

There is a 64bit TDP for Oracle on Solaris , so I gues you can do that. (At
least on a Solaris box)

Re: Client tries to backup non-existing files

2002-12-19 Thread Imre Csatlos
Hi,

Is yout client backing up the whole file system or just specific files?
Like 'dsmc inc /bla/bla/my*files.txt`

Also you can try umount and fsck for those file system, but I suspect the
problem is somewhere in the
backup file specifications.

If all the other files are backed up apart from those missing files, then
the backup is successfull afterall. :)

Subject: Client tries to backup non-existing files

Hi all,

I have a rather bizarre problem.

One of our customers tries to backup a
file system on a Solaris 5.8 system
using a 4.1.2.0 TSM client.

Our server is 4.2.3.1 on AIX 4.3.3.0

Every night the backup fails because
the client is unable to backup hundreds
of files. The log file is filled with
messages like these:

12/19/02 04:43:43 ANS1228E Sending of object '/bla/bla/file' failed

Every night the client complains about the same files.

And now for the bizarre part: According to our
customer these files have been removed from
the client some time ago. They are no longer present
on the disks of the system. And yet the client
tries to backup them (and because they are not there
any more it fails).

I found one strange thing about these ghost files:
Their names contain an *

For example: my*file.txt

Has anybody seen this before? I can't find anything in
the FAQ or the archives about a similar problem.

Regards,

Alexander

Re: TDP for Informix - management classes

2002-12-18 Thread Imre Csatlos
Hi,

Can someone with experience of TDP for Informix advise on an effective
strategy for expiring old backups.

As far as I know there is no neat way to expire logical logs, since every
logical logs has its own unique name.
It would be a good solution if you could delete backup files on the TSM
server. Under srver version 5.1 there is a Backup Delete Allowed? property
of the client nodes, that suggests this can be done, but I couldn't find how
to. If someone knows how to do this, please tell me. :)

perhaps someone could confirm if level 0 backups have unique names too or
if the same name is used each time).
No, they don't have unique names, so expiration works good for
database chunks.

It's surprising the TDP for Informix Installation and User's Guide doesn't
discuss this. Or have I missed a really useful readme somewhere?
No, you didn't miss anything. TDP for Informix is very poorly
documentated. (I mean there is a lot of stuff on how to install, but there
is almost nothing on how to use..)

Dwight,

We are running TSM client on our Dynix/ptx

The TSM client is: Version 3, Release 1, Level 0.8
The DYNIX/ptx: 4.0 V4.4.8

Also there is version 4.1 and 4.1.1 available for download (Don't know the
requirements):
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/cli
ent/v4r1/NUMAQ-PTX/

It may be hard to get support for this product.
