Re: server onto another server

2003-04-04 Thread Jeff G Kloek
Are your storage pools, db volumes and log volumes on internal or external
disk?
I ask because if you're moving that disk to the new host, it can be much
easier.
I did this on 3/29, moving from an IBM RS6000 S7A to a P670, and it went
very smoothly.
Let me know and I'll post the steps and times I recorded.

Hi Dave

I just went from 4.2.1.7 to 5.1.6.3. I had to install the following
versions :

5.1.5.0 from cd to get the licencing filesets
5.1.6.0
5.1.6.3

I did an upgrade form 3.1.2.42 to 5.1.6.2 using the same steps a month ago
and it went smoothly. Upgrading TSM is pretty easy as long as you have a
base level from a cd.

Error Message, Native : ANS0278S (RC157) The transaction will be aborted.
 Error Message, Unicode:

While we are NOT doing library sharing, we do have 3 different TSM servers
talking to the same 3494 library.
Each has it's own drives physcially connected, and none of the servers
knows anything about the other server's
tape drives. What we had set for each of our 3590tape devclass was
"mountlimit=drives". What we learned is that the tsm call to find an
available tape drive is an actual call to the LIBRARY to see how many
drives are available, and that doesn't bother to check the server's local
count of available tape drives. Our library has 32 drives in it, but the
server with this problem only had 13 drives connected. So, when TSM went to
try mounting another tape, the above errors occurred. The answer is to set
the tape devclass for each server to the exact number of drives available
to that server.
Just thought it'd be worth sharing.

Hi Andy,

I know this list *is not* an official communication method to IBM and even
tried to explain this once or twice. Usually I am opening PMRs on behalf
of our customers. Also was already few times annoyed with unavailability
of ESR tool (which was also promptly reported to ibm.com).

Not only me but all we should thank to those many IBMers volunteering on
the list and helping us all the time. Just to name a few: Del Hoobler,
Thiha Than, Neil Rasmussen, Pete Tanenhaus, Gianluca Mariani, Nick
Cassimatis, Bill Degli-Angeli, Gabriel Wiley, Hunny Kershaw, Lotti Brooks
and of course our top poster Mr. Raibeck.
You guys are helping us alot and we are overusing your kind assistance all
the time (not bagging, I would disagree with the recent discussion). At
least I can recall 4-5 time you Andy made this same P.S. - APAR was opened
on . The pulse of TSM's life was sensed by development
directly. And despite many comments seen here about the product, my
(personal) opinion is this is one of the best supported products I've
worked with.

Side question to rest of the list: for how many products you've had the
same or better support and from how many vendors?
I do not have any idea about support quality in U.S. At least here in
Bulgaria IBM's support is far from good but is THE BEST compared to *any*
other vendor.

Hi Zlatko,

I understand your and everyone else's frustration. When it comes to the
TSM product code, ADSM-L is one of the best places to be because your
message gets to people who write the code. In a similar fashion, the
feedback mechanism that I mentioned yesterday will enable your message
about the books and the web site to get to the people who manage the books
and the web site. While we in development make a best effort to carry this
kind of feedback to the right people, the feedback is now "second-hand",
and as such, it tends to get diluted. So I would recommend that you use
the web site's feedback mechanism to provide feedback on the web site and
the books. Please note that I am not trying to be dismissive of these
legitimate issues; I am only trying to help point you to the place where
your voice is likely to have a greater impact.

Best regards,

Andy

P.S. APAR IC35702 has been opened to address the documentation problem
that was created when the pubs email address went away.

Andy,

please do not assume its personal to you - you just brought the bad news,
not created them.
Actually those web folks (not we) ought to submit in this case a long list
of requests for doc-updates. Each book contains the "hard to redirect"
address. I would bet some other books have already been submitted for
publishing and also contain the wrong address. At least my docs for ITSM
5.1 contain it (and are less than a year old).
Why is so hard to redirect this address for a year or two before
discontinuing it?! Or IBM is losing control over tivoli.com domain?
Regarding Steve's recent post I will not throw all the mud on developers.
But for sure can complain about management of tivoli.com to ibm.com
transition (despite all help and communications from Luiz Nevarez).

2003-02-12 Thread Jeff G Kloek
I just had a dog-and-pony show yesterday about 5.1 update features, after
which SRM, then BMR for 5.2 was discussed. Basically, for AIX they're
incorporating SYSBACK as part of the Tivoli product, they said that there
would be a "sysback-like" feature for Solaris (we asked them to check into
root encapsulation, results pending), and for HP, they mentioned
Ignite-like functionality, all built into the Tivoli product. As for
Windows, that's still in the negotiation/planning stages.

IF you are running AIX ver 4.3 and above and also using SSA disks, have
you ever tried the option of export and importvg within AIX. This will
solve all your problems as it will take half the time to rebuild your

The "dsmserv upgrade" method is an interesting way. I would like
to
hear other people's input into that. But how we did it when we had to
move
from one H80 to another is we backed the database up to tape. Turned off
H80 1 and then powered up H80 2 and went through a dr procedure on that
system basically. We created the logical volume, the file system, then
ran
a dsmserv format command for the log and database then we simply defined
our devconfig and dsmserv.opt file after we installed the TSM server
software of course and restored and we were up in no time. Of course
this
was to and from the same version with the exception of a maintenance
level
or two. Just an idea on how we did it and I didn't find it very
difficult
or any gotchas (to the same version) of course. You may need to use the
upgrade command going from one version to another. I'm not really sure I
would think so. Thanks!.

fathom the best way to actually move the database
over. I'm going to be dropping all the disk and tape connections from
the
S7A and connecting them to the P670. I'll have time
to get all the devices defined and paths defined, so that with the
exception of the path statements, the storage pools, libraries
tape drives, log directories, db directories and files will all be
configured the same as before. My question is this: If I did all the
above, could I simply do a "dsmserv upgradedb" and let it fly?
I'm sure this isn't supported, so I'm just wondering aloud.

Thanks!!

A little further research reveals that when you set up etherchannel via the

In my experience, if the channel does not form, the switch has no way of
knowing these 2 (or more) ports go to the same node. Therefore, it will
treat them as two (or more) separate nodes since it will see two different
MAC addresses: one on each port. The IP address assigned to each NIC
should
then be ping-able (asuming all routing/VLANs and such working properly) as
it would as if you were not trying to channel and just had a node with 2
NICs. The only way I can think of this NOT happening, is if:

(a) mis-config of NIC(s) on node e.g. no IP assigned, administratively
downed

(b) the switch is set to FORCE a channel (done with "CHANNEL-GROUP x MODE
ON" or some variation of depending on switch model...). In this case, the
switch will be expecting a channel to form, if one does not, connectivity
may not be established. This can be used to form a channel if the NIC(s)
do
NOT suppport PAgP, or have weak support of, but are still capable of
EtherChannel since no PAgP frames are sent in the "ON" mode.

We had case (b) happen on some Intel NICs we had once. They supported
EtherChannel, but for some reason PAgP did not work. When we set the
channel to "ON" (forced) and it worked. This might be the case with ours.
Hope that helps some!

5.1.6.0 is new and has one serious known problem.

5.1.5.4 was suggested by support a few weeks ago as being pretty good.
4.2.3.2 is the recommended intermediate upgrade path before going to
5.1.5.4
especially if you have windows system objects which were introduced in some
level of 4.2.2.x with lots of bugs that really are not completely fixed
until 4.2.3.2 and supposedly 5.1.5.2.

Coming from 4.1.2, you should probably put on 4.2.3.2, then jump to 5.1.5.4
or higher, but not 5.1.6 until the one nasty problem is fixed.

Jeff,

We use Etherchannel on some of our servers, none of which are TSM servers
(but clients use it) in our case, however. Your NIC's (or drivers more
accurately) MUST support PAgP, for the channel to be automatically formed.
This is a Cisco protocol that handles the negotiation of the channel and
without it, you will be hard pressed to make the channel work! Intel NIC's
support PAgP, and I *think* some 3Com ones do, but other than that, I am
not
sure... Contact me directly if you would like more info.

We have Oracle 8.1.7.4.0 (32 bit)on AIX 4.3.3 and TDPO 2.2.1.0.
TSM server is 4.2.2.10. The client is a new setup. When DBA
tries to do a test backup with his RMAN script, he gets the following
error messages:

-
RMAN-03007: retryable error occurred during execution of command:
allocate
RMAN-10035: exception raised in RPC: ORA-19554: error allocating
device, device type: SBT_TAPE, device name:
ORA-19557: device error, device type: SBT_TAPE, device name:
ORA-19511: Unknown SBT error code = 0, errno = 0
--

I have run "tdpoconf showenv" and all looks good. We have slightly
earlier versions of Oracle and TDPO on other AIX machines and it
runs o.k. Just copied RMAN script to this machine and touched up
for this node. Have checked a few things and all looks o.k.

Any suggestions?

Filespaces Remain from years ago

2002-12-28 Thread Jeff G Kloek
I've just begun to take over this environment from the admin who left.
I have a large number of filespaces across a lot of my systems that have
not been a part of these systems for years.
I'm wondering what governs TSM keeping those filespaces out there. All of
the filespaces in question represent
mount points that don't even exist any more. Some go back to before 1999!
Can someone please tell me where the setting is that governs how long
these are kept? All these entries are useless, and are taking up much
needed room in my database.
Any insight will be helpful.
Thanks in advance.
