Ruud, check your message file (if it si not corrupted or some other problem on filesystem level) and if everything is OK, check your LANG environment variable. Re: Open File (using lvsa) for windows client 5.3.0.0
Hi Steve, here is response to your problem I have found on Tivoli support site: Problem is due to parameters. Disk on which OFS cache is stored MUST be saved with option "Dynamic" (see option include.fs and/or fileleveltype). It's mandatory to specify mode "SNAPSHOT" for all others disks (even if this is the default) when we want to use OFS option. Hereunder is an example for a valid option file : PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE TCPSERVERADDRESS xx SNAPSHOTCACHELOCATION c:\tsmcache\ SNAPSHOTFSIDLEWAIT 0ms TCPNODELAY YES DOMAIN C: D: Include.Fs "C:" FILELEVELTYPE=DYNAMIC Include.Fs "D:" FILELEVELTYPE=SNAPSHOT SNAPSHOTFSIDLEWAIT=0S Hope this helps Ing. I have one Win2k client that needs to backup locked files and so far have been unsuccessful getting it to work. I did a clean install of tsm client 5.3.0.0, configured the lvsa, did the required reboot, but the backup still fails over to non-lvsa incremental. I have it running journaled, which works fine, and I can see that tsm has created /tsmlvsacache directories on both the c: and d: drives. I am using remote desktop from xp to access the server, although I have tried using the web gui as well. I even tried pointing the lvsacache dirs to opposite vols in the dsm.opt, but I still get the following errors. Any pointers on how to begin to troubleshoot this would be appreciated. Re: Backing up Domino logged databases
Bill, after switching logging in Domino to any type (circular or archive), incremental backup process only databases for which DBIID changed or which were deleted (inactivation in TSM). You have to use combination of incremental and selective backup now, i.e. daily selective and once pre week incremental. Hope this helps. Ing. Jozef Zatko Login a.s. Re: TSM 5.2, Solaris 8 w/ STK L700 9940B drive
Thomas, it is my understanding that TSM device driver does not support FC connection to devices. You have to have SCSI connection to drives. In your case it means, that you have to have FC HBA, which present SCSI interface to host system (Solaris). In your mt.conf file you have to use fo "parent" parameter value SCSI. But I am not sure if this is true also in 5.2. Hope this helps Regards Ing. Jozef Zatko Login a.s. This option is working on my Windows client (version 5.2.0.6), but not on my AIX client. On my AIX 5.1 system, I have TSM server 5.2.2.5 and TSM client 5.2.3.0 (64bit). Following is output I get when I try to use dataonly option: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/root/# dsmadmc -id=admin -pa=xxx -dataonly=yes q vol ANS8017E Command line parameter 3: 'dataonly=yes' is not valid. ANS8002I Highest return code was 9. According to manual, this option is supported on AIX. Any thoughts? Best regards Ing. Jozef Zatko Login a.s. Dlha 2, Stupava tel.: (421) (2) 60252618

Walk through the wizard; the wizard installs the scheduler as a Windows Service (like an AIX daemon that is defined in /etc/inittab). - For the "scheduler name", type in "TSM SCHEDULER", or something similarly descriptive. - one of the items you will be asked for is the password. The password gets encrypted and saved in the registry so that the scheduler can contact the TSM server. - you will also be asked for the port, the server TCP/IP address, etc. -When you are asked about the log file names, include/exclude, just take the defaults. -The only non-obvious thing: when you get to the step in the Wizard that asks for "service login options", leave the box checked that says "system", but change startup from Manual to "AUTOMATIC". After you check FINISH, the service should be started (go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Admin tools -> Services, look for TSM Scheduler). Check the dsmsched.log file to make sure you get the "waiting for server to contact" message, and you are good to go. Sending TDPD events to TEC
Hello guys, for monitoring of Domino backups I need to send TDPD messages (ACD52xx) to TEC (tivoli receiver). When I use enable event command on TSM server, I get following error message: tsm: TSM>enable event tivoli ACD5202 ANR1801E ENABLE EVENTS: Invalid event or event class - ACD5202 According to TDPD documentation, messages labeled "Centrally logged" are sent to TSM server and then they can be sent to specified event receiver. Following is one paragraf from TDPD manual: Several of the Data Protection for Domino messages are sent to the Storage Manager Server so that execution of the Data Protection for Domino can be centrally monitored. Specifically, those messages labeled Centrally logged can be sent to the Storage Manager Server. The centrally logged messages are in the range ACD5200 through ACD5299 but not all messages in that range are sent to the server. The Storage Manager Server then has the ability to route these messages to several different .receivers. which include the server activity log, the server console and other external monitoring facilities such as SNMP and the Tivoli/Enterprise Console (T/EC). The Storage Manager Server command enable events is used to control which receivers get the Data Protection for Domino messages. Also, the receivers provide an ability to filter which messages are actually processed. Some receivers provide filtering based on message severity while others (such as the T/EC receiver) allow filtering on individual message numbers. In TSM server refference manual I found following text in description of enable event command: event_name A four-digit message number preceded by ANR for a server event or ANE for a client event. Valid ranges are from ANR0001 to ANR and from ANE4000 to ANE4999. Specify the NODENAME parameter if client events are to be enabled for matching nodes. Specify the SERVERNAME parameter if server events are to be enabled for matching servers. For the TIVOLI event receiver, you can specify the following additional ranges for the Tivoli Storage Manager application clients: Tivoli Storage ManagerApplication Client Prefix Range Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange ServerACN 3500â3649 Data Protection for Lotus Domino ACD 5200â5299 Data Protection for Oracle ANS 500â599 Data Protection for Informix ANS 600â699 Data Protection for Microsoft SQL Server ACO 3000â3999 Notes: 1. The application client must have enhanced Tivoli Event Console support enabled in order to route the above messages to the Tivoli Event Console. 2. Specifying the ALL option enables these messages. However, the INFO, WARNING, ERROR, and SEVERE options have no effect on the messages. 3. Because of the number of messages, you should not enable all messages from a node to be logged to the Tivoli Event Console. Does somebody know, what does it mean "enhanced Tivoli Event Console support enabled"? I found no information about this on IBM site, nor on ADSM.org. TSM server: 5.2.2.5 on AIX 5.1 TDPD 5.1.5 on Windows Thanks in advance Ing. Jozef Zatko Login a.s. Dlha 2, Stupava tel.: (421) (2) 60252618

How to block tape drive?
Hello guys, can somebody help me with following problem? I need to backup Oracle database (many of them) using b/a TSM client by putting Oracle into backup mode and backup all Oracle data files. Because of activity on Oracle database, before putting Oracle database into backup mode, I need to be sure that I have available tape drive for backup (backup will be done LAN-free using TSM STA). My idea is to use script, which will select empty (or available, ie. loaded but not used - idle) drives from drives table using select command and then put one of them to offline until I have Oracle in backup mode, and then put this drive back to online just before backup starts. My problem is that from drives table it is not possible to get enough information about state and activity of the drive. There is only information whether drive is loaded or not. Using "q mount" command I can get also information whether drive is "in use" or "idle". Is it possible to get this information also using some select command? Or any other ideas? Many thanks Ing. Using more than one utility to backup Informix
Hello guys, I have one quick (hope easy) question about backing up Informix databases. Is it safe to use two different backup tools independently to backup Informix data? I have Informix server, which was backed up using Ontape. Recently we implemented TDP for Informix and started to use onbar. But Informix admin still wants (at least for some time ) to use also Ontape. I am not sure how these backup utilities manage Informix logs. Isn't it possible that Ontape during its backup will backup also some logs which will not then be backed up by onbar (will be marked as archived)? Is it possible that later restore using onbar will not be done correctly because of this? My version of Informix is 7.31UC3 Thanks Ing. Jozef Zatko Login a.s. Dlha 2, Stupava tel.: (421) (2) 60252618

TDP for Domino - expiration
Helo guys, I have one question about data expiration for which I can not find clear answer in doc. When I have lets say 30GB of Domino databases and I set up backup policy to have two versions of data. I backup databases every day and all databases are changing daily (so all databases are backed up every day - I now, time for transaction logging). On first day I get active version of all databases, on second day I get new active version and version from first day becomes inactive. And now my question. When does oldest inactive version expire? It expires during backup on thirsth day or I have to run expire inventory after backup to free space taken by expired data? I need to know how much data space I need in storage pool to hold the backed up data - two timesor three times the amount of backed up data. Thank you very much Ing. Jozef Zatko Login a.s. There are 2 drives and both was changed past series of media faults (one of them twice) past about 1 year of operation. We have about 20 "historicaly touched" tapes with average 3-4 write faults. Media faults are still repeated and my finding is all that faults were done at 70-75% of estimated capacity (set by longterm using to 105GB, we use client compression) during filling the tape. It seems like all tapes were corrupted nearly at the same place, of course there is some diffusion because this is only estimated filling. Faults at these tapes are repeatedly occured at these percents of max capacity. I understand when one tape has media fault repeatedly at the same place, but about 20 tapes? Could it mean that all tapes were corrupted by one bad drive at the same place, or can be reason at microcode? We are in contact with our IBM support to solve it, but I am interested if anybody of you register similar phenomenon? Tomas

Re: Year retention oracle backups
Steve, thank you for your very helpfull reply. I did not know that Oracle is using its own prefix for each backup. I am not Oracle guy. And you are right, the subject line was bad by my mistake (I did reply and forgot to change subject) I have one more question. If I will do regular backups of Oracle db using full+incremental system, do I need to create separate, out of order backup for one year retension, or I can use normal full backup and only assign to this backup different prefix? RMAN generates its own names for the backuppieces, but the oracle admin has control of the prefix used. One option that they can use is different prefixes for different retentions, and then use these prefixes in their delete scripts. TDPO doesn't care. It holds its data until RMAN tells it to delete. Yes Del, you are right. It was my mistake. I was looking at wrong file. File domdsm.cfg is OK. I tried to debug TDP with options you sent to me. To help resolve this issue... 1. Make sure that NOTESINIPATH setting is pointing to the correct directory containing the NOTES.INI file of the active Domino Server. 2. Make sure there is not a NOTES.INI file in the \WINNT or \WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory. The Domino Server API code looks there first, even if you specify the directory where you want it to look. 3. If the above two things do not resolve the issue, search for all occurences of the NOTES.INI file on your machine and find out if it is picking that one up first. You could do this by temporarily renaming all of them EXCEPT the one that your active Domino Server is using. TDP for Domino 5.1.5 problem
Hi TSM-ers I have following problem with Domino backup: when I do backup of Domio databases (GUI or cmd line) I always got a lot of following mesages: 03/11/2003 09:40:02 This database is currently being used by someone else. In order to share a Notes database, all users must use a Domino Server instead of a File Server. 03/11/2003 09:40:08 Backup of names.nsf failed. 03/11/2003 09:40:08 This database is currently being used by someone else. In order to share a Notes database, all users must use a Domino Server instead of a File Server. 03/11/2003 09:40:10 Backup of catalog.nsf failed. Environment: Domino 6.0 server on Windows 2000 SP3 TDP for Domino 5.1.5 TSM client 5.1.5.4 TSM server 5.1.5.2 on AIX 5.1 I can backup all ntf files and most of nsf databases, but some of databases fail to backup - names.nsf allways fail I can open all databases with LN client without any problem (through Domino server of course). All tasks on Domino server were stoped except DB server. No antivirus or other SW, which could lock files. our Domino admin checked that nobody is using databases via filesystem (not through Domino server) Does somebody know what could be the reason for this kind of failure ? I know it is probably Domino problem, but hope somebody can help. Ing. Jozef Zatko Login a.s. Dlha 2, Stupava tel.: (421) (2) 60252618

I have a real research about your problem. (I was have a good time. Learn me alot about TSM). I got some wild ideas how we can sold it but after a wild I start from the begingn again. The only thing i know right now is that. You can not send data direct to the SAN disk you most send data to the TSM Server first and after that send data to the SAN Disk And the only way to do that is to create a file device and boundle it to a Storage device. That is the only way to do it. And you don´t need to create a library or path to fix that. Becuse the Device Class "File" can not boundle to a Library. If you most create a Library (I don´t know way) can you try with Removable Media and File Library and File Drive. That is the only way to do it. Another way is to use command "Define Datamover". But that is only when you use NAS. Datamover have support for SCSI aswell but I don´t know if that is enough. But good luck! Hi Theresa, I had similar problem. Check your LANG environment variable for user under which you are running backup scripts (RMAN). It should be equal to language used in TSM API. I suppose you have a server with disk capacity, which you want use for TSM to store data. I do not know if that remote machine is Windows or Unix system. It is possible to use both of them (I actually worked only with Windows system but with NFS in Unix it should be also possible). On Windows system you create shared directory, which TSM server will use for file volumes. You must assign access proper rights to this share for user, under which TSM server is running, so that TSM server can access this directory and create and delete files. Let say for example that your remote machine is named "server1" and shared directory is named "data". If TSM server have proper access rights, you can create storage pool on this shared directory like this: define devclass remotefile devt=file maxcap=200M directory=\\server1\data define stg filestg remotefile maxscr=100 You have to be carefull about setting maxscr parameter. Re: Semote storage pool
Hi Etienne, it is easy. This parameter depends on maxcap parameter from device class. If you multiply this two number, the result should not be greater than storage capacity you have available on remote server (in my example I assume you have 20 GB). If you have Unix machine, you can do the same steps except that in devclass definition for directory parameter you use your NFS mount directory. And that is all. Hope this helps Ing. Typically, what I wan't to do is to use space on a remote server to have a disk or a file storage pool on it. I tried with a file device class and it allows only local disks. A disk devices class goes a little further, but when it tries to format the volume, there's an error. One possibility would be to create a local file storage pool and then to copy the files on the remote servers and put the file volumes in offline state, or something like that, but is there something easier ? I have a 3584 with (8) Fibre drives going through McData switches. with TSM Server 4.2.2.10 on AIX 4.3.3 ML 10 and Atape sdriver 7.1.1.0. 3584 library code 2460 and drive code 25D4. Have had 3584 about a year. Have had intermittant errors maybe 2-3 times a month, but noticed that were only happening on DRIVE1 which has control path. Moved Control path to DRIVE5 and sure enough the errors were then happening on that drive. Working with our IBM CE on this for several months, IBM Tucson initially was saying that the errors we were getting were media errors. But I could reuse tha same tape and it would have no more problems. On some instances, the tape would not be dismounted from drive but have to have drive reset for eject. Finally in late December my IBM CE called and said that IBM Tucson had seen this problem all over and it was happeing on the Fibre Drives, the drive that the Control Path was on and going through either IBM 2109 or McData switches. These were the common factors. IBM is working on a code fix (I assume for drives and/or library). I suspect problem could be happening on 3583 also. Re: TDP for Domino ACD5130E message
Hi Brian, couple of things to check. Is your TDP fo Domino using correct notes.ini file? I already had problem with this. On Domino server there was couple of copies of notes.ini file in various directiries and despite the fact I had in domdsm.cfg set the correct one, TDP was using another copy of notes.ini from different directory, which contained wrong oprions. Another problem can be with options keyfilename and serverkeyfilename (or something like that) in notes.ini. Your keyfilename should point to your server id. TDP for Domino is not using serverkeyfilename option (according to my experiences). Hope this helps Ing. Jozef Zatko Login a.s. Dlha 2, Stupava tel.: (421) (2) 60252618 "Brian L. Re: NAS as a backup unit?
Christian, you can use NAS device as a backup unit, but according to my experiences only as a sequential media. Network attached drives are not functioning correctly (probably because of the way the connection to file server is kept). I was using network drives for sequential volumes without any problems. Hope this helps Ing. Jozef Zatko Login a.s. Dlha 2, Stupava tel.: (421) (2) 60252618
Re: DB2 Backup using different node names
Hi Eduardo, could you please provide the content of your dsm.opt and dsm.sys? Also, are you trying to backup your database with scheduler or by hand from command line. When you want backup one database with two different node names, you have to have correct environment DSMI_CONFIG,(I assume your platform is Unix) for particular TSM node in user environment, who owns database instance. Are tou sure you are switching your environment correctly? Ing. Jozef Zatko Login a.s. Dlha 2, Stupava tel.: (421) (2) 60252618

Hi TSMers, I have one simple (I hope) question. Is it possible to use TDP for Domino 1.1.2 with Domino R6 (W2K) or I have to upgrade to TDP for Mail 5.1.5? We could see, that after doing a incremental backup there were 5500 transaction logs discarded. So on the first stage we were happy. But, the expiration of the db and the reclaim didn`t free up as much as expected. It looks like that the expire only scans the first 1/5 of the db. Therefore the expire discards only a very few db-objects and the aftergoing reclaimation process could free up only a few tapes. The "funny side" (ouch ! ) is that the expire process ends always with a state of success. But we could swear there MUST be a lot more db objects to inspect. Maybe this happens some time before we dealed with the tdp stuff. So I belive we have another problem, this time a db Problem. Re: solaris expert needed
Acording to Tivoli web site, this library is supported from TSM 4.2. Do you have at least this version of TSM server and TSM device driver? And another point: try to use native Solaris tape driver - st. In st.conf put the same as in your mt.conf and change "mt" to "st". Then try "add_drv st" command. Re: solaris experts plz help
Hi Gerald, if I understand you are confused from having more devices with the same SCSI target and LUN. It is OK. Theese targets and LUNs are on different SCSI adapters or different SCSI channels on one SCSI adapter. When you run add_drv command, system checks all devices with specified target and LUN (from conf file) on all adapters. In Solaris theese devices have actualy special device file in different subdirectory under /device directory. If you get error messages from add_drv command, usually there is problem with SCSI connection or TSM device driver support. Acording to your output from probe-scsi-all your SCSI connection seems to be all right. Have you checked if your tape and optical drives are supported in TSM version you are using? Oh, what is your version of TSM? Ing. Jozef Zatko Login a.s. Hello Gerald, you have to change your conf files like this: lb.conf if the scsi target and luns for your libraries are OK, you do not have to change this file. op.conf replace all "lb" with "op" (in this file you define only optical drives, not changer). For each optical drive create one stanza with correct target and lun of each drive (so you will have 10 stanzas in your conf file). For each tape drive create one stanza with correct target and lun of each drive (so you will have 4 stanzas in your conf file). I need to populate the "mt.conf", "lb.conf", and "op.conf" files accordingly but what I've done doesn't seem to be working. Re: Technical question.
Christian, there is no problem to run two TSM servers on one machine. You can have on both machines installed two TSM servers (one active and second inactive but ready to use in case of fail). Then, when one of them fail, you can restore its database (from latest backup) on second machine and run both servers simultaneously. Or you can backup TSM database on each other via server-to-server configuration. Another question is if you need to automate this proces. Probably the best solution would be to use cluster (if it is possible, as I do not know your platform, servers location and so on). Hope this helps Ing. Jozef Zatko Login a.s. Re: solaris tsm server
Gerald, device file /dev/rmt/0mt is for drive, not for library. You should have in your /dev/rmt directory something like xlb, where x is number which depend on the order, in which you run add_drv commands for drives and library. It does not matter what this number is, but you have to have this file in your /dev/rmt directory and use it in def libr command. Re: Question regarding including an excluded type of file.
James, I think that better solution is to use FREQUENCY parameter in copy group definition of your new management class. Set it to 7 days if you want to backup .pst files once a week. Then you do not need two schedules. Also you will have to include .pst files in dsm.opt. Hope this helps. Ing. Jozef Zatko Login a.s. We are also opening an issue Tivoli, but we seem to get faster and better results from our comrades on the list server. This is our problem: We are drowning in pst files, which are "changed" each time an individual opens his e-mail. We have made a corporate decision to back these up once each weekend, and exclude them the rest of the week. These are the steps that we have taken: 1. On each NT server, we have excluded all files that end in "pst." Exclude *:\...\*.pst 2. I created a new management class through the web interface, called "pstfiles," with versions data deleted set to 4, and retain extra versions set for 90 days. Even though the excluded files would normally be deleted, this management class will keep 4 sets inactive. 3. I created two new schedules, one to run on Friday evening and one Saturday evening, figuring that one will successfully back up the pst files. THE PROBLEM is that I cannot successfully code the include statement on the schedule through the web interface. My intent is to Include *:\...\*.pst pstfiles . This should override the exclude statement in the dsm.opt file, backup the pst files and associate them with the management class pstfiles. On the Object line of the web interface, I have tried variations of the following commands: Include *:\...\*.pst pstfiles The word "include" was not needed. *:\...\*.pst pstfiles TSM attempted to backup pst files, and a separate filesystem pstfiles. '*:\...\*.pst pstfiles' TSM failed to associate pst files with the management class. "'*:\...\*.pst pstfiles'" The double quotes were replaced with a square, I presume because TSM did not recognize the symbol. Does anyone have a recommendation as to how to best handle this? Sent by: "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED] T.EDU> 31.10.2001 13:50 Please respond to "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" Hi, One of my servers has 2 LTO drives, of which the 2nd drive is being used as copy stgpool. But our management has decided to take away that second drive so that it can be installed in another server. So for the past hour or so, I have been updating our schedules etc so that nothing points to the 2nd LTO drive. Everything seems to be going fine, except one last thing! I can't seem to be able to do a 'delete devclass' of my 2nd LTO drive. Can any of you guys try to point out what's wrong? I've cracked my head but I can't seem to find any portion that points to the 2nd LTO device. This is what my dev classes look like: tsm: SAPROD>q devclass DeviceDevice Storage DeviceFormat Est/Max Mount Class AccessPool Type Capacity Limit Name Strategy Count (MB) - -- --- - -- -- DISK Random 0 FILECLASS Sequential 1 FILE 4.0 1 LTO_DEV1 Sequential 1 LTO DRIVE 1 LTO_DEV2 Sequential 0 LTO DRIVE 1 I'm trying to delete LTO_DEV2. Jack, zou can use virtualmountpoint option and then domain option. You will find details in "Using backup-archive clients for Unix" manual. Jozef Zatko Login a.s. IT consultant
