Re: individual file size 2 GB - voulme groups
Well I think an individule file needs to be contained with in an agragate. Therefore the max size file TSM server could handel would be the max addressable size of a single agragate. I am not certain what that size limit is. However that does rase an interesting scenario. We know that an agragate can not span across multipal physical volumes. So say you have an 10 GB 4mm device, and the file you are backing up is 15GB. That would make it impossable for that file to be backed up because the media is unable to contain the whole agragated transfer. Of cource this is shooting off the hip hypothisis, and I could be completly mistaken. Keith Davey On Wed, 20 Dec 2000, sekar n wrote: Hi KD , thanks. Re: TSM security - sharing STK library with other apps
Good Day, I am not sure if TSM loads the complete ACSLS inventory. I don't think so however. However, TSM will only work with tapes that are checked in an labled by TSM. Therfore you do not need to worry about TSM overwriting the other applications tapes. Also if STK works similar to IBM's 3494, then the tapes are broken into logical libraries (classes/catagories), and each application only sees the tapes in its logical class. There really is no practical limit to the size of the DB. However you will want to take into consideration things like DB backup times, and the times needed to perform a recovery incase of an error or failure of the server platform. Re: Estimated Capacity of 3590-K tapes
To the best of my knowlege it will. Estimated capasity is only used untill the tape is filled the first time so that you can get a estimate of the storage pools capacity. (number of volumes x estimated capacity per volume = estimated capacity of the storage pool) Actual capacity is a function of actual tape length per cartrage, and compression rate. It will fluxuate based on the type of data you are backuing up or archiving. Keith Davey On Mon, 18 Dec 2000, Kelly J. Re: V2 archives retrievable in v3.7?
That is correct. New TSM clients add extended table entries to the TSM Server DB that prohibit earlier clients from restoring data with thoughs changes. However the TSM client does not have to reprocess any of the older data. It is recommened that you test a new client release prior to moving it into a production environment. Just to be sure that no problems creep up in your unique environment. Standard caveat: When someone claims that documentation says a certain thing, make sure they provide a quote or specific pointer to where it says that, else they are wasting your time. Re: tape volumes with unknown content
You might try checking these volumes into a library and then run q content on them. That or an audit volume. However if the volhist states they are STGDELETE then most likly they were data volumes that once belonged to a storage pool, but were eather deleted, or all the data on them were expired or reclaimed off the tape. The documentation says: These options (include, exclude and exclude.dir) are checked from the bottom of the include-exclude list up, until a match is found. LOCAL FIX AS REPORTED BY ORIGINATOR: RESPONDER SUMMARY: * USERS AFFECTED: TSM Windows Client* * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The processing priority of an * * exclude.dir statement within an include-exclude list is not* * documented in the book.* * RECOMMENDATION: Add documentation describing the processing* * priority of an exclude.dir statement within an* * include-exclude list.* * RESPONDER CONCLUSION: The following text was added to TSM Windows Client book: "Options are checked from the bottom of the list up, until a match is found. However, an exclude.dir statement takes precedence over other include-exclude statements. The worst part is that despite this APAR being more than a year old, the specified text is still not in the TSM Windows Client book - or any other client book! The Include-Exclude options are the single, worst, nightmarish part of the TSM product, and have been for years - now made worse by inconsistencies in the once-rigorous rule of "bottom-up" processing, as EXCLUDE.DIR and EXCLUDE.FS take precedence over all other Include/Exclude statements regardless of position. This whole area is in serious need of a full, complete overhaul - and cohesive, understandable documentation, with comprehensive examples. What is inflicted on customers now is abominable in its lack of logical consistency and understandable interrelationships. Tivoli needs to finally appreciate that many, many hours of customer time are being wasted struggling with the Include/Exclude options, thanks to design and documentation problems. Richard Sims, BU
Re: I/O Error
This sounds like a problem that I worked on. Not sure of the APAR at this time. Will have to check in the morning. It depends on when the error was generated. This problem happens when a process is writing to tape and that tape reaches its EOT mark prior to all the data that needs to be writen goes out. The tape is ejected, and generates this error. A new tape is mounted and the operation continues normaly. If this is what you are seeing, then the error is being generated erroniusly. I beleve this problem is fixed in 3.7.4 and 4.1.1. Like I said I will have to conferm that. Every day when the backup on our SAP system is done, there is the error: ANR8355E I/O error reading label for volume 068322 in drive 3575RMT1 (/dev/rmt1). is there any fixes that i can download to solve this problem? waiting for your reply... Re: LOG usage over 100% - backups failing
The short answer is to get another TSM server. TSM is incredably flexable, but it does have its limits. I would strongly consider spliting the load across two or more servers. Our adsm db-size is close to 100 gb and growing daily. Almost each day log is overflowing with 100%, all backups fails, and server recovers continues We are already using max 5.4 gb of log and can not increase any more on log volume. I appreciate, if anybody has any solutions this problem to reduce log usage or extend log beyond 5.4gb. Thanks, vijay.
Re: Migration from ADSM 3.1 to TSM 4.1

I have some questions for you, please be patient. 1) We are running ADSM 3.1 on AIX 4.3.2 currently. My boss is asking me if it is possible migrate from ADSM 3.1 to TSM 4.1 directly. If it is so, what are the steps that we must follow for update our server? Direct upgrade is possable. The quickstart guide to 4.1 includes detailed direction on how to accomplish this. 2) We use an automated 3590 library (IBM 3466) in our storage pool. It would be affected in the update process? It is possible lost data? 4.1 includes full support for 3590 drives/library. This will not be effected. 3) We have some servers with Lotus Notes 4.6 protected by Agent for Lotus Notes. Those servers will be upgraded to Domino, then we must use TDP. What is happen with information protected by Agent for Lotus Notes after migration to Domino? This is a sticky subject. There is no migration path for Agent for Notes data into the TDP for Domino software. They are completely diffrent. You will need to make fresh backups of DOMINO under the TDP product, and keep a copy of the agent around for point in time restores to notes 4.6 if needed. Once the old notes data is no longer viable, then you can delete the notes filespaces and run exclusivly with TPD from that point on. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Re: FreeBSD Client
I have seeing the beta 3.1 linux client succesfully run backup and restore operations on NetBSD box. However the 3.7 and 4.1 clients will not execute in that environment. Feel free to badger your IBM salesdroid about getting one. Or has anyone successfully ran another client (like SCO) under FreeBSD ? We've been using the SCO v2 client under FreeBSD 3.x and 4.x reasonably successfully although it has a few warts. There is a patch floating around for FreeBSD that will disable (via sysctl) the Linux emulation drive remappings which is what is stopping the linux client being useful. That will cause problems if you are running any other linux binaries on that system though. If you want a copy of the SCO v2 stuff we're using here then email me and I'll mail it to you. (~2Mb). Re: Log files for Restores?
TSM GUI client will not generate a list of all restored files, however it will display in the dsm.err file any files that it incounters problems restoring. If your interested in generating a complete list of restored files then I would suggest running the command line BA client and piping the output to a text file. Keith Davey On Fri, 8 Dec 2000, TSM Mail-ID wrote: Hi, Using the TSM B/A 3.7.2.x client GUI, is there a log file that gets generated that tracks what is actually restored? We are trying to do some disaster recovery of some NT 4.0 servers. When restoring the system partition of an NT server, a number of files are locked (in System32) and not actually restored until the server gets rebooted. We would like to see which files it actually does restore, since there are some NT issues. We've noticed some temporary files that hang around during these restores as well, even after a reboot. I know Legato generates a log of all files it restores and which it has problems with. Just wondering if TSM has an equivalent log. Or do we have to command-line it and redirect output?
