ITSM v5.1.5 CD-ROMs?

2003-03-26 Thread Ken Sedlacek
Env:

TSM v4.2.2.12 AIX server, running just great!

List:

I hate to go to v5.X, but need to in the next few weeks.

We are getting ready to upgrade to either v5.1.1.X or to v5.1.6.X.

I have been monitoring and saving all the upgrade v5.x emails over the last
few months so I could review them when I upgrade.

Can anyone tell me if there is a v5.1.5.0 base-level CD-ROM?

The v5.X upgrade emails show there is some confusion about this subject.

TIA

select volume_name,stgpool_name,pct_utilized from volumes where
volume_name
like '3%' order by pct_utilized

Replace the 3% with whatever you tape volumes start with.

Hope this is what you are looking for.

Try this:

Unsupported, but it works if you follow the READMEs.

...which begs a question:

Why in the name of God's greasy gonads did the TDP for SQL group build
sqldsmc.exe's code to require that I put a password for an SQL server's
system administrator ID in *clear test*? We're in danger of losing a
customer's TDP for SQL business because that system administrator's
password has to sit out there stark naked in a batch file. The TDP for
SQL's GUI interface allows you to enter the password once and have it
encrypted. Why in *hell* can't the command-line version use that
encrypted password?

Help Needed/Point in Right Direction: Getting Tapes Off-Site

2001-05-31 Thread Ken Sedlacek

TSM'ers:

Our Management is finally getting where we should have been years ago with
Disaster Recovery. I need to start getting my TSM tapes off-site and need
you advice.

Environment:
Two H70s (one test, one production), AIX 4.3.3, 3GB memory each, shared 300
GB SSA disk drawers.
One 3570 Magstar dual-drive, 20-slot library.
Library size=~55 C-format tapes.
TSM Server/Clients 3.7.3.
10GB Primary Disk storage pool.
DRM installed but never setup/used.
We backup Oracle financial dbs only-no network clients.
Backup size ~60GB (AIX & Oracle dbs) each night.

Questions:

1) How would you proceed if we need to get the TSM tapes off-site as
quickly as practicable?
Maybe start off with backup sets initially until something more thought-out
is established?

2) Use DRM? How about Copy-pools?

3) Should I use DRM? (I know I should but I don't know the first thing
about it).

4) What other options are available?

Any help is appreciated.

ANS1075E **** Program memory exhausted **** error message

2001-06-27 Thread Ken Sedlacek

I have never received this error message in the client dsmerror.log before.

Outside of the obvious message meaning, what could cause this?

I have looked at the Tivoli error message on-line HTML, and can not find it

This message came from the TSM backup client on the TSM server.

Environment:

Setting Client Environmental variables-3.7.3 AIX client

2001-07-22 Thread Ken Sedlacek

I have pored over the TSM "Installing The Clients 3.7 manual" on this
question, and it is unclear as to the actual practice.

My AIX client (AIX 4.3.3, TSM 3.7.3 client) observation:
At times , the dsmsched.log files are in the / directory. At other times,
they seem to move to the /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin directory (I know it
sounds strange, but it has happened).

Question:
How do you specify where the "dsmsched.log" is located?

"Installing The Clients 3.7 manual" Answer:
Put the environmental variable DSM_LOG into either dsm.sys or dsm.opt file
and put the path where the .log file should go.

My dsm.sys & dsm.opt files don't specify the DSM_LOG variable.

I don't know whether to chance putting the DSM_LOG in there and see what
happens or what.

What I need is some advice from you!

Do you use the DSM_LOG variable in your dsm.sys or dsm.opt file?
or how do you specify where the dsmsched.log file goes??

Moving from RS6K AIX H50s to H70s

2000-07-24 Thread Ken Sedlacek

We are moving our ADSM environment from IBM AIX RS6000 H50s to IBM AIX RS6000
H70 servers (need more memory/speed/disk space-don't we all ).

I need to know how to move the ADSM environment (3.1.2.40)

We are moving our Magstar 3570 tape system to the new servers also.

The only thing we are backing up with ADSM is the AIX files and our Oracle
DB/files. No other network clients are involved.

Can I just copy our ADSM DB tape into the new ADSM server directly?

Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

How to delete un-needed Filespace Names

A trivial question about IE Explorer web browser

2000-08-24 Thread Ken Sedlacek

To all:

This is a trivial question compared to what has been discussed here:

Those of you who use the IE 5 web browser to interface with ADSM will know this:

I recently lost the ability for the "events window" on the web browser to
display a larger pop-up window when the length of the event message goes beyond
the event line window.

In other words, the "events pop-up window" will expand to display a large length
event message.

I can't figure out how to make it expand like it did before.

I have set the IE explorer back to its defaults.

ADSM 3.1.2.40
IE 5 &/5.5.

Any ideas??

3570 Volumes status=empty. Why?

2000-09-20 Thread Ken Sedlacek

This has not happened in the last 1 1/2 years of our ADSM system.

Some of our 3570 volumes are being reclaimed OK, except instead of being deleted
out of the library, some of them go to an "empty" status.

Do any of you know why this is happening??

Yet other volumes reclaim to their end and then get deleted from the library, as
they should.

I believe this has happened to us 2-4 weeks ago, and the "empty" volumes
eventually get deleted, but it takes somekind of doing.

Any ideas?

Web client access problems after 3.7.3 SM upgrade

2000-10-17 Thread Ken Sedlacek

Last night we upgraded ADSM 3.1.2.40 to TSM 3.7.3 without much difficulty.

I am having problems with the IE5.0 web client access though.

When trying to access the TSM server via IE5, I get an error message on the Java
console saying:
"Server parameter is missing. Please Set serverhladdress and serverlladdress."

I have been trying to find these 2 parameters: serverhladdress and
serverlladdress

Does anyone know where they are located and what should go in them?

TIA

Ken - try QUERY SERVER. If it shows no servers defined you need to define
one using the DEFINE SERVER command.
You can use the minimum option, eg
DEFINE SERVER tsm1 PASSWORD=tsm1 HLaddress=n.n.n.n LLAddress=1500
So the servername and password can be anything, the HLaddress is your
server's TCP/IP address and LLADdress is the server port. After this, the
console should come up.
Hope this helps ..

Subject: Web client access problems after 3.7.3 SM upgrade

Last night we upgraded ADSM 3.1.2.40 to TSM 3.7.3 without much difficulty.

I am having problems with the IE5.0 web client access though.

When trying to access the TSM server via IE5, I get an error message on the
Java
console saying:
"Server parameter is missing. Please Set serverhladdress and
serverlladdress."

I have been trying to find these 2 parameters: serverhladdress and
serverlladdress

Does anyone know where they are located and what should go in them?

TIA

TSM V4.1 Admin Guide & Admin Reference manuals

2000-10-25 Thread Ken Sedlacek

I made a mistake on ordering the TSM manuals for 3.7, and ended up with the TSM
4.1 Admin Guide and Admin Reference manuals instead.

I know there are differences between 3.7 & 4.1, but should I send back the 4.1
manuals and get the 3.7 instead?

We are not planning to go to 4.1 soon (6-8 months or so).

Is the 4.1 manual useable for 3.7?

TSM 3.73. include/exclude statements: where should they be?

2000-11-03 Thread Ken Sedlacek

To all TSM 'ers:

I have found out that the previous ADSM administrator put a line in the dsm.opt
file that points to a file where the include/excludes are. Clever, but I would
never have found this out on my own or in the manual.

You can cancel this request if you want to.

Tks in advance.

I have inherited TSM totally on my own now and have to learn real fast.

I need to know where the include/exclude statements should go.

The manuals say:

dsm.opt or dsmserv.opt or dsmserv.opt.smp

The previous ADSM operator was to have setup the include/excludes, but when I
look in the *.opt files, I don't see any of them there.

Is there some other file where they might be?

We are not using client option set include/exclude definitions.

I have examples in the manual, but I need to have someone give me a "real world
example" from there system and what file the example is from.

We are backing up only oracle dbs with TSM and doing full/incr backups of both
H70 RS6Ks, not other network clients are being backed up.

Env.: 2 H70 RS6K, 4.3.3, TSM 3.7.3 server, client still at 3.1.?.

I know DRM is complicated and has a whole 4 day class devoted to it.

We have the DRM module but have never implemented it because no one knows what
to do with it without going to the class.

With that said, is there some DRM manual that I could read and get the basics of
setup for DRM without going to the DRM class? or,
Would I just make things worse by trying to setup DRM without the class?

TSM v4.1.1 migrate install: "No device definitions are saved"????

2000-12-14 Thread Ken Sedlacek

We are planning the TSM server v4.1.1 install.

We will be doing a migrate install on AIX 4.3.3.0, TSM 3.7.3.0.

In the README for v4.1 migrate install section (pp 1), it states:
" For a Migrate Install

o No device definitions are saved. Record all of your current definitions
because you will have to redefine all devices after the installation of
Version 4.1."

To those of you who have already installed v4.1., does this really mean you
will have to redefine all devices?? or, what??

>From a practical point of view, will all of your devices go away after the
v4.1.1 install??

Please shed some light on this.

Hello,

As a new Tivoli convert (ex-Arcserve), I need to gain TSM 4.1 knowledge
rapidly.

Does anyone know of a paper, or similar, that describes TSM Best Working
Practises that usually come from years of experience, or more often painful
mistakes. (Have you written one?) The Technical Guide is great, but not
"real world" enough.

The kind of info I'm thinking of is; pro's/con's of using Named Pipes for
Tivoli backups, Network tuning for backups (window sizes, etc), adding
quality to DSM.OPT and DSMSERV.OPT files, known gotcha's, etc...

... Anyone who knows "Tapesys" (VMS) will be aware of how useful this
information can be.

I have tried Redbooks, ADSM, Tivoli manuals and even paid for a consultant
(who has gone missing!!!), but still I feel that I should be doing more.

My Tivoli "family" comprises of 2 servers and 32 clients at present, all
running NT4.0 mainly SP6a.

TSM Client Environment:

I have the client GUI running a scheduled backup with no problems.

On this same NT wrkstn, I can also run the TSM admin browser web client to:

On this same wrkstn, I want to run the TSM 3.7.3 browser web client for my

Both are running.

Problem:
On this same wrkstn (where the TSM client GUI works & TSM admin client web
browser works), I can't seem to get the TSM client web browser to interface
with the TSM server @:http://TSMserver:1581 to display the client access

Why?? everything else works right from this NT wrkstn (GUI & Admin web

In order to perform client operations on machineX via your web browser, you
need to (1) configure the Web client on machineX, and (2) point your
browser to machineX.

Therefore, if you wish to perform client operations on you workstation, you
need to point your browser to your workstation. If you are pointing your
browser to http://TSMServer:1581, but TSMServer is not your workstation,
then you are pointing to the wrong address.

For example, if your workstation's TCP/IP address is kens.kyrus.com then
you need to point your browser to http://kens.kyrus.com:1581.
http://kens:1581 might also work if you are on a machine that is on the
same network as kens.kyrus.com. If you are actually on the machine
kens.kyrus.com, you can also use http://localhost:1581

I am sorry I left so much relevant info out of my first email on this same

Lets try this again:

TSM server Environment:

TSM 3.7.3 server running on RS6K H70, AIX 4.3.3

TSM Client Environment:

NT4 Wrkstn running TSM client 3.7.3.

I have the client GUI running a scheduled backup with no problems.

On this same NT wrkstn, I can also run the TSM admin browser web client to:
http://TSMserver:1580 without any problems.

On this same wrkstn, I want to run the TSM 3.7.3 browser web client for my
backup/restore/archive wrkstn. I have installed via the GUI wizard the
client agent services (TSM client acceptor and TSM remote client agent).

Any ideas??

"Expire Inventory" taking way too long to complete

2001-02-20 Thread Ken Sedlacek

We issue an expire inventory command on a daily admin schedule.

We have ~1.6M objects in the TSM db.

It normally takes ~10-12 minutes to complete.

Today, it is taking well over 1 hour to complete.

We have no unusual activities occurring that I can see.

Does TSM so some "extra" checking on a periodic basic which could explain
why it is taking so long to complete the "expire inventory" command?

TIA.

Richard, you were right one.

After the "expire inventory" was completed, I did the "q occ" (query
occupancy) and we had about 6GB of AIX files expire on one of the AIX
servers.

That explains it!!

I just never observed this and was concerned as we all are when "unknown"
occurrences are observed.

Thanks for you help.

That might be the result of a retention threshold being reached,
or a large number of files having gone Inactive some time ago.
When the Expire Inventory completes, you will likely see some
large numbers of files in the stats.
Another possibility would be if someone inadvertently cut
retention periods, but an ACTivate POlicyset would have to
put it into effect, so would be conscious.

Help with ITSM Disk Pool/Client backup expectations

2003-07-30 Thread Ken Sedlacek
Enviro:

W2K TSM server 5.1.6.3, w/primary disk storage pool, migration to DLT tape
library.
W2k/NT client 5.1.5.15

Scenario:

2-3 client backup sessions happening at one time.

Question:

Are all the backups being serviced and written to the disk pool in some
round-robin fashion?

or, is any 1 client backup session being totally completed before another
client session is started?

or, just how does multiple concurrent client sessions operate in this
scenario?

Is there any documentation on this behavior?

Ken,

You will find the server commands DEFINE SCHEDULE and UPDATE SCHEDULE in
the TSM Administrator's Reference. The client ARCHIVE command is
documented in the client manual. I leave it for you to find them within
the books, as this is a good opportunity to become more acquainted with
them.

Yes, I was in much of the weekend to make the archives work.

I had scheduled them for sat. night.

When I came in on sun. noon to check on them, then didn't work!!! So, I
figured out the prob., then scheduled them for sun. afternoon-night.

When I came in Monday morning, it worked.

Now I need to apply this knowledge to our main TSM server, which is ~10x
as big as this one is.

I am confident in the steps from the mistakes I made with the first,
smaller TSM server.

I also will now institute specific archive files/directories and watch out
for the vertical growth syndrome.

Tks again.

A: The TDP dsm.opt file is in addition to the regular TSM B/A client. I
used the Redbook SG24-5247-00, Chapter 2 starting at 2.3

process with detailed explanation's for each. I also had a little help

ADSM/TSM article in July 2003 Computer Technology Review (wwpi.com)

There is a nice article on the history of TSM (WDSF/ADSM/TSM) in the July
2003 copy of Computer Technology Review (wwpi.com), written by IBM
Distinguished Engineer, Mike Kaczmarski. This is a good marketing article,
w/allot of truth in it!

The July 2003 issue is not on their web site yet (the June 2003 issue
there now).

For those of us who have been here for a few years or longer, not really
nothing new, but interesting.

Also in the July 2003 issue, a case study of how ATPCO (Airline Tariff
Publishing Company-collects fare-related data from more than 500 airlines
& distributes it to global distribution systems, ie. Sabre, Worldspan, and
computer reservation systems), is using TSM for their Data Protection.

TSM subfile backup vs TSM incremental ?

2003-09-08 Thread Ken Sedlacek
Enviro:

W2K TSM server 5.1.6.3
W2K client 5.1.5.15

I have read in the W2K Admin Guide about subfile backups.

We have a remote NT server where our T1 bandwidth just doesn't seem to get
the TSM incrementals-forever completed.

I am thinking of configuring subfile backups along with client compression
to improve the backup cycle.

Question: does anyone have "practical" experience with subfile backups?

Is it easy to implement?

Is there anything to pay special attention too?

New to the disk storage pool arena-question on archives/backups in a disk storage pool?

W2K TSM server 5.1.6.3

I have comingled "normal" node backups with node archives in a disk

Our DLT tape pool is non-collated.

Question: Is there a way to move a node's archive data in this comingled

being moved also?

I now realize the importance of separate backup and archive disk pools,
but we are terribly short of disk space and this was the only way to do it
at this time.

Re: TSM subfile backup vs TSM incremental ?

We use the TSM subfile backup for backing up windows 2000 servers over a
WAN network. And it helps, really helps.

We have run into four problems, Three of them are design issues:

1) The subfile cache, which is located on the client to store the
checksums
for each block of a backed up file. This cache has a max size of
1024megbytes
and we have cache's that max out. I am not sure what effect this has on
the
subfile functioning, but it does take a bit of disk space.
It would be nice to know what effect on the subfile backup process maxing
out the subfile cache has.

2) The max file that can be handled by the subfile backup is 2gig, and we
have
folks who have larger files. It would be good if IBM could lift this
limit.

3) If the delta file grows beyond a fixed size of the base, the file is
backed up again to create a new base. This puts a hurt on the network. It
would be good if the TSM server could build a new base file on the server
using
the old base and the delta.

4) We had a problem with a couple of restores, when the size of the base
file
and the delta file exceeded 2gig the restore would fail. This is fixed in
the
latest client levels.

This was a great new feature for TSM. I hope they keep up the work.

How to move your TSM server recovery logs?

2003-09-18 Thread Ken Sedlacek

I need to move my recovery logs to another drive to increase their size.

I have looked in the W2K Admin Guide for a procedure, but failed to find
one.

Does anyone have a procedure to move your recovery logs?

Here is what I was thinking of doing:

1) Halt TSM server.

2) Use the DSMSERV FORMAT utility to define new recovery logs on the new
drive.

3) Restart the TSM server.

Is it this simple or am I missing something?

Ken,

Assuming you have adequate free disk online, you should be able to use a
devclass where devtype=FILE.

I'd recommend setting up a devclass for the desired target directory and
an
appropriate MAXCAPacity. (Default for MAXCAP is 4 MB.) Assuming that
you're doing an export of node data, you (probably) don't want to be
dealing with gobs and gobs of volumes.

HTH,

Ted

Tivoli Software Announces Pricing Update for Tivoli Storage Manager

2002-08-28 Thread Ken Sedlacek

FYI:

Here we go again on iTSM pricing changes!

I. Tivoli Software Announces Pricing Update for Tivoli Storage Manager
-
Tivoli is very pleased to announce updates to its Storage Manager pricing
model. Since the April 9, 2002 announcement of Tivoli Storage Manager 5.1
and its new packaging and pricing model, customer feedback has been
extremely
positive! We have completed our assessment of the new pricing model and
will take the following actions, effective August 27, 2002:

1. Split the Tivoli Storage Manager Enterprise Edition into three
   components:
   - IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition
   - IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Storage Area Networks (SAN)
   - IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management (HSM)

2. Re-price Tivoli Storage Manager and the Tivoli Storage Manager for
offerings:
   - The licensing models for these offerings do not change, only the
pricing.

3. Withdraw Tivoli Storage Manager Enterprise Edition

Re: BareMetalRestore

2002-09-10 Thread Ken Sedlacek

FYI:

Being an IBM Premier Business Partner, I addressed this question with our
Tivoli Channel rep.

Here is an IBM Sales Flash on the subject of BMR:

Bare Metal Restore
  And IBM Tivoli Storage Manager

Below is an account from an IBM SE who has sold plenty BMR solutions with
out selling a Veritas product or any other 3rd party product.

We can almost always provide a customized solution that is as good or
better than BMR. This approach requires some additional selling. BMR is
not unique in its ability to boot from a network image and restore. The
value proposition that BMR brought was that it would integrate with
recovery software "under the covers" and provided one piece of glass for
all platforms. If you look at the documentation, it is pretty evident that
BMR has four distinct solutions for bare metal restore: one for each of
the platforms that they support. For the UNIX platforms they basically
mimic the solutions provided by the OS vendor: NIM for AIX, Jumpstart for
Sun Solaris, and Ignite for HP-UX. With WinNT/2K, they have basically
automated the procedure that we have documented in the "bare metal restore"
redbook and the "using TSM with Win2K" redbook.

Generally a customer is only interested in one, or sometimes two of the
platforms that BMR supports. I generally listen to the customers concerns
and have them tell me what they really need. Contrary to popular belief
BMR does not come out to the box fully configured, there is quite a bit
work to do after the software is installed. I generally point out that
with only an incremental bit of effort, the customer can have a solution
customized for their environment without having to buy (or have the hassle
of working with) a third party product. I also suggest that there could
be a lapse in support when the OS is updated. The OS recovery tools are
updated at the same time as the OS so this exposure does not exist in this
case. This argument has been received very well in UNIX environments, but
unfortunately WinTel sites generally want a shrink-wrapped solution.

A bit of good news is that help is on the way for AIX. Sysback6000 is
scheduled to provide BMR-like functionality and TSM integration by the end
of the year. Ghost, Ultraback and Christie are planning solutions for
Win2000, but I have not had the opportunity to test any of them. I would
like to see us build "bare metal" capability into the Wintel platform. I
have scripted procedures on more than one occasion and it is not nearly as
difficult as one might think. The lack of a packaged bare metal restore
capability is one of the primary reasons that we will have an uphill battle
gaining marketshare in the Wintel space. The other two are the lack of an
integrated HSM solution (sorry, but otg is not the answer) and a usable
administrative interface.

To net is all out, the approach that I have found to work best is to
"de-mystify" the bare metal process.Show BMR for what it really is
collection of network booting tools that call backup software. Let them
know that much of this functionality is provided to them "free" by OS
vender. Basically, inform the customer that there are other solutions
available and that more are on the way

Help-new mgmt class for existing node: how to make this work?

2002-09-11 Thread Ken Sedlacek

AIX TSM server 4.2.2.10
AIX client 4.2.2.1

My brain is fried and I need help here!

I have an existing node in the STANDARD policy domain and STANDARD mgmt
class.

We need several of the Oracle DB files to have different file retention
than STANDARD mgmt class.

I have defined a new policy domain with a new oracle mgmt class of desired
file retention for the Oracle DB files.

How do I associate the existing node into the new policy domain/new oracle
mgmt class, AND retain the STANDARD mgmt class on the existing node files?

Can an existing node be associated with 2 policy domains?

or am I approaching this in the wrong way??

Please help my brain is fried!

For AIX 4.3.3:
ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/patches/clie

nt
/v4r2/AIX/v422/AIX43/

For AIX 5.1:
ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/patches/clie

nt
/v4r2/AIX/v422/AIX51/

You're looking for IP22500_5.tar.Z, along with the relevant readmes.

Don't depend on whatever link your email client says. Cut and paste both
lines onto the address bar of your favorite web browser.

(It's about time somebody finally went back to using .Z compression instead
of .gz.)

AIX TSM v4.2.1.25 client dsmerror - TCP/IP received rc 25 trying to accept connection from server?

2002-09-24 Thread Ken Sedlacek

Enviro:

TSM client 4.2.1.25 running on H50 AIX 4.3.3.10.

I get this 1 client dsmerror, no other error message of any kind, except
this one:

09/23/02 11:05:19 TCP/IP received rc 25 trying to accept connection from
server.

I don't have any other kinds of client errors with this client in the
activity log.

Someone last week put this same error message out for discussion, but I
never heard discussion of it.

Does anyone know what this means?

I seem to recall not receiving this same error with my AIX TSM v4.1.2
client, though.

Comments?

URL for old 4.2.2 client releases?

2002-11-27 Thread Ken Sedlacek

but they keep quitting.

I thought I saw a listserv email about a 4.2.3.2 client recently, but can't

I don't see any newer client that 4.2.3.0 patches, so I want to roll back

AS/400 & TSM 4.2 & 3581 LTO drives/autoloader?

2001-10-01 Thread Ken Sedlacek

HI TSM'ers:

My forte is TSM 3.7 running on AIX 4.3.3.

I have been asked by my management to install TSM 4.2 on an AS/400 system
with 3581 LTO drives.

I have looked on the Tivoli web site for this info, but want to verify the
following with you all:

1) Will TSM 4.2 will only work on OS/400 Version 5 release 1(according to
the tivoli web site)?

2) Is TSM server v3.1.2.80 (which is the latest version for AS/400) on the
TSM v4.2 CD-ROM?

3) I see no TSM v4.2 release document specific to AS/400 on the TSM v4.2
CD-ROM. Is there such a AS/400 release document someplace?

4) Has anyone used 3581 LTO drives on AS/400? Do they work on AS/400?

5) Has anyone installed TSM v4.2 on AS/400 w/3581 LTO drives?

TIA

"Server media mount not possible" error condition

I can manually do TSM db backups in the Magstar 3570 library with no

Audit library 3570lib runs without a problem.

I have restarted the TSM server and restarted each of the clients
schedulers to no avail.

I have checked the AIX errpt for any rmt1/2 errors. None reported!

This is a real stumper!!

Anyone have any ideas on this??

ps-I am thinking of upgrading to TSM v4.1 in-order to get TSM Tech support
availability.

We use 9840 cartridges manufactured by Imation, similar to IBM 3590 tapes.
For our company, Imation will replace the cartridges that are defective as
a
result of Imation processing; on average, this was true for half of the
cartridges that failed. The only sticking point is that we must send the
cartridges to Imation for analysis. If we magnetically erase the
cartridges
to prevent live data from going out of house, we destroy the imprinted
servo
tracks and void the warranty. Our auditors decided that the risk of
exposing privacy data was too great, and instructed us to stop sending live
data to Imation. We could send tapes to Imation if we wrote ones and zeros
across the entire tape, but if we are unable to write to the tape, then we
erase and dispose of the tape. One additional note on disposal: the tapes
contain chromium, a carcinogenic heavy metal that must be disposed of as
hazardous waste in the United States.

2002-02-14 Thread Ken Sedlacek

To All:

AIX 4.3.3
TSM server/client 3.7.3

We are backing up our Oracle dbs and AIX OS with TSM 3.7.3 (upgrading to
4.2 very soon!).

We have been using server-prompted schedmode for the client for some 3
years now. No problems.

We are investigating ways to make our backups more efficient and our DBA
wants to trigger the client schedule from an event.

The event is the completion of doing hotbackups of our Oracle dbs. The
event script would create a lockfile during the Oracle hotbackups, and then
remove the lockfile when the hotbackups are done.

Is there a way to then trigger the client schedule based upon the removal
of the lockfile?

Your input is appreciated??

AIX Web client browser other than Netscape 4.7i?

2002-03-28 Thread Ken Sedlacek

Hi ALL:

Enviro:
AIX 4.3.3 on H70
TSM 4.2.1.10

When using the TSM Admin Web client on AIX, can someone tell me of a newer
version of Netscape than 4.7i that works?

I have tried many times to use Netscape 4.7i and get many display errors
while using it to administrate TSM.

Is anyone using something newer, or a different browser altogether?

Any ideas?

TIA

What to do with a volume that won't ITSM mount in a 3570 library?

2002-04-22 Thread Ken Sedlacek

ITSM'ers:

Enviro:
AIX 4.3.3.04 H70
TSM 4.2.1.10 server
MP Magstar 3570-C12 library

I have 1 tape that won't mount in the 3570 via ITSM.

There is still data on it and I can't figure out how to get the data off
the tape if it won't mount.

I don't have the SENSE data error message, though.

So, how do I get data off this volume if it won't mount in ITSM?

Look at the actlog at the time operation is attempted and see what error
message is and tell us. If it is something like:

ANR8779E Unable to open drive /dev/rmt4, error number=46

then most likely tape is broken. Manually inspect tape - open access
door on tape and see if tape is damaged there.

I've had many cases of broken 3570 tapes, this is the error you get
attempting to mount a broken tape. I've seen a couple of times where
this error means something else, but most of the time - broke!

Here is the URL for the AIX 4.3 TSM client:

ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/client/v4r2/AIX/LATEST/AIX43/

The checksum for file IP22367.tivoli.tsm.client.ba.aix43.32bit is:

castor:root:[ /tmp/tsm.client ]
(132)==> cksum IP22367.tivoli.tsm.client.ba.aix43.32bit
2139047089 2286128 IP22367.tivoli.tsm.client.ba.aix43.32bit

I used the AIX cksum command.

cksum file.xyz

The client is always a base fileset with all needed LPPs.
I recommend to install a newer client, 4.2.1.23 / 4.2.1.25.

AIX TSM server 4.2.1.10: losing 3570 library

2002-05-02 Thread Ken Sedlacek

Enviro:
AIX 4.3.3 H70
TSM server 4.2.1.10
Magstar MP 3570-C12 (2 drive) library

Looking for TSM'ers w/AIX & a 3570 to answer this question

Upgraded from 3.7.3 to 4.2.1.10 four weeks ago.

No problems w/upgrade.

Schedules/backups running normally since upgrade!

Yesterday, upon restart of H70, the 3570 library initialization failed upon
TSM server start-up.

Restarted TSM server several times, same problem.

In AIX smitty devices, the tsm_devices (fast path), I do not see the 3570
library/medium changer defined.

Is this normal??

Should there be one defined??

I never looked at the AIX tsm_devices area since the upgrade went smoothly
and TSM operated okay.

Please help!!

IE Explorer for TSM Admin: Event window is horizontally too small

2002-05-27 Thread Ken Sedlacek

I am using IE 5.5 (128-bit) for TSM administration on a Win2K wrkstn.

My event window is not horizontally long enough to see the event messages.

I am using the smallest text type.

How can I get the event window to expand to see the whole event message
length??

ps-on my WinNT 4 wrkstn, the event window would expand to see most of the
event message length!
