Re: Virtual volumes question

2008-06-25 Thread Laura Buckley
Hi Skylar,

I'm confused by your question. You say you are doing migration from the
target to the source. But that doesn't make sense. In server-to-server
virtual volumes, data is sent from the source to the target. Your
configuration shows that you have a storage pool called ONSITE-MALI on the
source that uses the server device class W_MALI. Are you migrating data to
that storage pool from a disk storage pool? If so, then when you do that,
you will see the archive filespace for the source server on the target
source get larger. You can see the virtual volumes on the source server by
looking at your volume history file (q volhist). When these volumes are
reclaimed or deleted, then the source sends a delete archive filespace
command to the target.

Hi -

Take a look at the devclass on the remote server that points to the
local server (people often call is SERVERCLASS) or something like that.
You might need to increase the value of mountlimit. It will need to be
at least two for reclamation to work with virtual volumes.

the remote server is utilizing the local server's diskpool for both

Re: Migration of TSM server

2005-06-02 Thread Laura Buckley
Neil,

One possible approach is to install the Windows TSM Server, connect it
to the library, then set up server-to-server communications between the
Solaris server and Windows server. Once this is established, you can
use EXPORT NODE to copy the data from the Solaris server to the Windows
server. We have had a lot of success with this. Recently, we assisted
a customer with a similar scenario move 1.2TB of archive data using this
process.

Dear all,

Normally, I'd Google and read up but I need some feedback pdq. Our TSM
server is a Sun 280R with 1 x 750MHz CPU, 1GB RAM sunning Solaris 2.8
but, to be honest, this system is underspecified and sometimes can't cut
it. The TSM is 5.2.1. The tape library is a fibre-attached Adic Scalar
1000 with 6xLTO1 drives and 188 tapes and it mostly backs up Windows
stuff.

The powers-that-be wish to migrate this to a Windows 2003 box using the
same tape library - and soon. It's a political decision and not really
up for debate at the moment. The first TSM consultants that I've
approached have said that we cannot retain the legacy data and that if
we install TSM onto a Windows server, all of the data will be lost
unless we dual-access the library and retain the Solaris TSM. As the
library is full and then some, that isn't really an option even if the
politics wouldn't get in the way.

My question - Is this the case?

My skills are Windows and we do have some good Solaris people.

Hi Justin,

There is a setting on the disk storage pool called maxsize. This value
(which is no limit by default) specifies the maximum size for a physical
file in the storage pool. You must specify the scale factor (K,M,G,T)
when setting this attribute (i.e. update stg diskpool maxsize=4G)
otherwise it defaults to bytes!

Now I've noticed sometimes when I backup a file which is
considered large compared to others it goes right to tape. Here's my
situation. I have a SUN system which has an Oracle database on it. When
it backup the normal O/S files it backsup right to disk perfect real
quick. Now when it hits a DBF which is only: 12 meg mind you, it hangs
there and says: waiting for mount of offline media. Now there's
plenty of room in the storage pool, migration doesn't need to run,
there's like 200 gig in the disk stgpool free and the copy group is set
for it to go right to disk. Now it's just not on Oracle DBF files
sometimes it's on other application files..etc. It's like if a file is
over a certain size regardless of the current disk storage pool
utilization percentage it will still mount a tape and backup to tape?.
Any ideas?. Is there something I'm missing? It's a problem because I do
a backup for this client and I see there's more then enough disk storage
pool space freed but not enough tape drives in the time they want it
ran. No big deal I figure because I have more then enough disk space.
WRONG, I kick the backup off and it still trys to mount a tape?. Any
ideas would be appreciated thanks!.

Re: Managing Server-to-Server tapes taken offsite

2003-01-19 Thread Laura Buckley
Hi,

The TARGET server (where the DR data resides) sees the data as archive
objects. When the SOURCE server (where the primary copy of the data
resides) copies the data to the DRPOOL, the objects become archive
objects on the TARGET server.

Most people who use this type of server-to-server implementation do so
for the express purpose of not having to remove the tapes from the
TARGET server (which assumably resides at a different geographical
location than the SOURCE.)

If you still want to remove the tapes, then I suggest that you do the
following:

On the TARGET server, create a storage pool just for the source server
data. Then, update the Archive Copy Group in the default management
class of the policy domain the SOURCE server belongs to so that it
points to this new storage pool as the destination storage pool.

When volumes are created in that pool, you can check them out of the
library and update their access to OFFSITE.

That's not exactly the problem I'm trying to solve. I want to check them
in as scratch tapes. I just don't want them to disappear out of the

Example. We generate a list of all tapes in VAULTRETRIEVE status, and
give that to a human and tell him to bring all those tapes back from the
vault. We move all the tapes on the list to ONSITERETRIEVE status.
Human brings tapes back from the vault. We load them into the bulk entry
door and issue the CHECKIN command to check them in as scratch. All is
OK if human retrieves all the right tapes. But if one doesn't get
retrieved for some reason, there is no longer any record that the tape
exists and isn't where it belongs. I'd like to have it left in the
database in some status, VAULTRETRIEVE or COURIERRETRIEVE or anything
that would indicate that it exists and needs to be returned to the
library.

longer exists. TSM should be smart enough to checkin a tape that's in
CourierRetrieve status, and say Oh .. I guess it's back now. If it
could do that, then if a tape got moved to CourierRetrieve and did not
get checked back in, the fact that it was remaining in CourierRetrieve
status would be a red flag. Moving them to OnsiteRetrieve, which
disappears them, just seems like an unnecessary and dangerous step.

Re: Oracle and TDP issues

2002-10-22 Thread Laura Buckley
Zoltan,

You can't Oracle using the TDP without RMAN. There are many people who
write their own scripts to backup Oracle. You can backup a tablespace
at a time, by puttting the tablespace in backup mode and then using a
SELECTIVE backup on the tablespace (which is a file.) You could write a
script to do this, one tablespace at a time. The biggest problem we
have encountered doing this, is that when a new tablespace is added to
the database, you must be sure to modify your backup script accordingly.

Subject: Oracle and TDP issues

We just purchased the TSM TDP for Oracle on NT/2K.

We installed it, only to realize it won't work since there is no sign of
RMAN.EXE on this machine?

So, the owner of this box/package contacts the vendor. Their response
wasOracle is version 7.3.4, not 8i or 9i, which will not run with their
app. said the person she spoke to did not seem to know what RMAN
was.

So, how does one backup an Oracle app/database, using the TDP without
RMAN ?

I am not an Oracle person but even I know that RMAN is the utility to do
database backup/restore/maintenance !

Suggestions, anyone ?

Client Traceflags in 5.1.5 changed?

2002-10-12 Thread Laura Buckley
Hi,

Does anyone have a list of valid client traceflags for the 5.1.5 client?
I am trying to use the PERFORM flag and it no longer provides the
instrumentation client detail INSTR_CLIENT_DETAIL. We have used this
flag in the past to get performance information about client sessions.
Has it been replaced?

TIA,

SAN (Shared) Tape libraries and licensing

2001-06-19 Thread Laura Buckley

Hi all,

If I have a library that requires Advanced Device Support and I share it via
the SAN to another TSM server, is the other server (the library client) also
required to be licensed for Advanced Device Support? (I'm assuming it does,
I just want to verify.)

Re: only one migration process :-(

2001-06-12 Thread Laura Buckley

Claudio,

Since you only have one node, the only way to have more than one migration
process is to turn on collocation for you tape pool at the filespace level.
This will cause each filespace on the client to migrate to a separate tape.
If you only have one filespace on the client, your out of luck.

Check also that the account your scheduler service is running under has
permission to backup this drive.

Have you checked the DOMAIN statement in your dsm.opt file to see if it
has the D: drive listed? That'd be one place to check. Also, if your
client is using client option sets and has the domain set there, you
might check to see if the D: drive is included in the option set.

I have an NT client that is not backup up the D drive. We
 can manually do
the incremental but it will not do it when we start the
 scheduler. When
the client looks in the dsmsched.log it shows it backing up
 the C drive and
then skipping to the F drive. We have tried an INCLUDE...no
 luck. Any
ideas were to look? This was a new drive specification
 within the last few
weeks, but he has done others before and not encountered this problem.

Re: operator intervention

DEF LIBR MYLIB LIBTYPE=MANUAL
DEFINE DRIVE MYLIB DRIVE1 DEVICE=MTX.X.X.X

(WHERE X.X.X.X IS THE ID, LUN, BUS and PORT for the device)

You can then run the server in mountmode to see the prompts. If you are on
a Windows server, bring up the TSM Server utils and run an operator mount
window from there.

Re: ANR8441E Initialization failed for SCSI library 3570LIB.

2001-05-06 Thread Laura Buckley

Salam,

It sounds as if the library is not properly configured. You can run a test
using the libtest utility to see if you are correctly communicating with the
library. Run the test as follows.

This utility is located on Windows servers in the tivoli\tsm\utils directory
or on Unix servers in the /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin directory.

To run the test on Windows servers

lbtest -dev lb0.0.0.2 (where lb0.0.0.2 is the scsi dev name of the library)

and on Unix servers

lbtest -dev /dev/lb0

You will be presented with a menu

Select Manual Test

Select 6: Open. If the open is successful, LBTEST is successfully
communicating with the library. If the open fails, you may have a
configuration problem with the library. Verify that the scsi driver is
loaded and running. Verify that you have the correct scsi id number.
Verify that the os can see the library at boot.

If the open succeeds you can proceed with the following test:

Select 8: Ioctl Return Element Count (This will report the number and types
of identifiable elements in the library i.e. drives, ioport etc.)

Select 9: Ioctl Return All Library Inventory. This will show all of the
library elements. It will also show what is in each element (i.e. drive,
slot etc.) Look for the drive numbers and the element numbers for those
drives. Also confirm that the drives have the correct scsi id. These are
the correct element numbers and scsi ids for the define drive commands.

Hopefully, using this diagnostic procedure, you will be able to determine
the cause of your problem.

Good luck

Re: HP-UX Client Performance - Tuning Tips anyone?

2001-05-06 Thread Laura Buckley

First the obvious things:

What' the performance like when you try to ftp a file to the TSM server? If
the ftp is also slow, then the problem is not with the TSM client.

Some tuning considerations for the TSM client:

txnbytelimit (in the client dsm.sys file) should be 25600
txngroupmax (in the server dsmserv.opt file) should be 256

also for the following:

TCPWINDOWSIZE
Specifies TCP sliding window size and allows multiple frames to be sent
before an acknowledgement is obtained from the receiver
Requires increased memory on the client

Recommendations:
Minumum of 32
Increase this size accordingly - start at about 2048 and work upwards
Experimentation required

TCPBUFFSIZE
Specifies size of client s internal memory buffer used to send to the
communications layer
Used by client only during backup; used by server only during restore
Requires increased memory on the client
Recommendations:
 Minimum of 32
Increase this size accordingly - start at about 2048 and work upwards
Experimentation required

Subject: HP-UX Client Performance - Tuning Tips anyone?

HP-UX 11.0
TSM Client 4.1 100MB-full duplex Ethernet.
TSM Server 4.1.3.0 on AIX 4.3 RS/6000 S80 with 2 Gigabit Ethernet adapters
configured as EtherChannel.

Could some one give us some tuning tips for not only the TSM client, but
HP-UX configuration settings to get optimum backup performance? We started
testing TSM on friday and this box is only giving about 200KB/sec throughput
while a Sun Solaris right next to it is getting over 4500KB/sec. The 'old'
ADSM performance guide really only lists server performance, not much on the
client. The Unix admins at this shop say that the HP box is a more powerful
server that the Sun box, but we can't seem to get it to move on backups.

Also, if anyone has tips for Sun Solaris...that would be appreciated just as
much!

P.S. I've searched the archives, but didn't find much. I'll keep trying with
different keywords, but thought I'd try the direct approach, too.
