Re: Virtual volumes question
Hi Skylar, I'm confused by your question. You say you are doing migration from the target to the source. But that doesn't make sense. In server-to-server virtual volumes, data is sent from the source to the target. Your configuration shows that you have a storage pool called ONSITE-MALI on the source that uses the server device class W_MALI. Are you migrating data to that storage pool from a disk storage pool? If so, then when you do that, you will see the archive filespace for the source server on the target source get larger. You can see the virtual volumes on the source server by looking at your volume history file (q volhist). When these volumes are reclaimed or deleted, then the source sends a delete archive filespace command to the target. Re: Migration of TSM server
Neil, One possible approach is to install the Windows TSM Server, connect it to the library, then set up server-to-server communications between the Solaris server and Windows server. Once this is established, you can use EXPORT NODE to copy the data from the Solaris server to the Windows server. We have had a lot of success with this. Recently, we assisted a customer with a similar scenario move 1.2TB of archive data using this process. Laura Buckley STORServer, Inc. Our TSM server is a Sun 280R with 1 x 750MHz CPU, 1GB RAM sunning Solaris 2.8 but, to be honest, this system is underspecified and sometimes can't cut it. The TSM is 5.2.1. The tape library is a fibre-attached Adic Scalar 1000 with 6xLTO1 drives and 188 tapes and it mostly backs up Windows stuff. The powers-that-be wish to migrate this to a Windows 2003 box using the same tape library - and soon. It's a political decision and not really up for debate at the moment. The first TSM consultants that I've approached have said that we cannot retain the legacy data and that if we install TSM onto a Windows server, all of the data will be lost unless we dual-access the library and retain the Solaris TSM. As the library is full and then some, that isn't really an option even if the politics wouldn't get in the way. My question - Is this the case? My skills are Windows and we do have some good Solaris people. Re: Managing Server-to-Server tapes taken offsite
Hi, The TARGET server (where the DR data resides) sees the data as archive objects. When the SOURCE server (where the primary copy of the data resides) copies the data to the DRPOOL, the objects become archive objects on the TARGET server. Most people who use this type of server-to-server implementation do so for the express purpose of not having to remove the tapes from the TARGET server (which assumably resides at a different geographical location than the SOURCE.) If you still want to remove the tapes, then I suggest that you do the following: On the TARGET server, create a storage pool just for the source server data. Then, update the Archive Copy Group in the default management class of the policy domain the SOURCE server belongs to so that it points to this new storage pool as the destination storage pool. When volumes are created in that pool, you can check them out of the library and update their access to OFFSITE. Re: Oracle and TDP issues
Zoltan, You can't Oracle using the TDP without RMAN. There are many people who write their own scripts to backup Oracle. You can backup a tablespace at a time, by puttting the tablespace in backup mode and then using a SELECTIVE backup on the tablespace (which is a file.) You could write a script to do this, one tablespace at a time. The biggest problem we have encountered doing this, is that when a new tablespace is added to the database, you must be sure to modify your backup script accordingly. Laura Buckley STORServer, Inc. Re: operator intervention
DEF LIBR MYLIB LIBTYPE=MANUAL DEFINE DRIVE MYLIB DRIVE1 DEVICE=MTX.X.X.X (WHERE X.X.X.X IS THE ID, LUN, BUS and PORT for the device) You can then run the server in mountmode to see the prompts. If you are on a Windows server, bring up the TSM Server utils and run an operator mount window from there. Re: ANR8441E Initialization failed for SCSI library 3570LIB.
Salam, It sounds as if the library is not properly configured. You can run a test using the libtest utility to see if you are correctly communicating with the library. Run the test as follows. This utility is located on Windows servers in the tivoli\tsm\utils directory or on Unix servers in the /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin directory. To run the test on Windows servers lbtest -dev lb0.0.0.2 (where lb0.0.0.2 is the scsi dev name of the library) and on Unix servers lbtest -dev /dev/lb0 You will be presented with a menu Select Manual Test Select 6: Open. If the open is successful, LBTEST is successfully communicating with the library. If the open fails, you may have a configuration problem with the library. Verify that the scsi driver is loaded and running. Verify that you have the correct scsi id number. Verify that the os can see the library at boot. If the open succeeds you can proceed with the following test: Select 8: Ioctl Return Element Count (This will report the number and types of identifiable elements in the library i.e. drives, ioport etc.) Select 9: Ioctl Return All Library Inventory. This will show all of the library elements. It will also show what is in each element (i.e. drive, slot etc.) Look for the drive numbers and the element numbers for those drives. Also confirm that the drives have the correct scsi id. These are the correct element numbers and scsi ids for the define drive commands. Hopefully, using this diagnostic procedure, you will be able to determine the cause of your problem. Re: HP-UX Client Performance - Tuning Tips anyone?
First the obvious things: What' the performance like when you try to ftp a file to the TSM server? If the ftp is also slow, then the problem is not with the TSM client. Some tuning considerations for the TSM client: txnbytelimit (in the client dsm.sys file) should be 25600 txngroupmax (in the server dsmserv.opt file) should be 256 also for the following: TCPWINDOWSIZE Specifies TCP sliding window size and allows multiple frames to be sent before an acknowledgement is obtained from the receiver Requires increased memory on the client Recommendations: Minumum of 32 Increase this size accordingly - start at about 2048 and work upwards Experimentation required TCPBUFFSIZE Specifies size of client s internal memory buffer used to send to the communications layer Used by client only during backup; used by server only during restore Requires increased memory on the client Recommendations: Minimum of 32 Increase this size accordingly - start at about 2048 and work upwards Experimentation required Laura Buckley SSSI -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of William Boyer Sent: Sunday, May 06, 2001 7:29 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: HP-UX Client Performance - Tuning Tips anyone? HP-UX 11.0 TSM Client 4.1 100MB-full duplex Ethernet. TSM Server 4.1.3.0 on AIX 4.3 RS/6000 S80 with 2 Gigabit Ethernet adapters configured as EtherChannel. Could some one give us some tuning tips for not only the TSM client, but HP-UX configuration settings to get optimum backup performance? We started testing TSM on friday and this box is only giving about 200KB/sec throughput while a Sun Solaris right next to it is getting over 4500KB/sec. The 'old' ADSM performance guide really only lists server performance, not much on the client. The Unix admins at this shop say that the HP box is a more powerful server that the Sun box, but we can't seem to get it to move on backups. Also, if anyone has tips for Sun Solaris...that would be appreciated just as much! Bill Boyer DSS, Inc. P.S. I've searched the archives, but didn't find much. I'll keep trying with different keywords, but thought I'd try the direct approach, too.
Vendor Interest for Oxford University TSM Symposium 2001
The organizing committee for the Oxford University TSM Symposium 2001 is inviting vendors with TSM related hardware and software products to display their products in our vendor demo area and possibly provide presentations on their products. We are specifically looking for companies who provide value added software products for managing TSM and companies who provide storage hardware supported by the TSM environment (i.e. tape libraries, SAN switches etc.) If you are interested in participating in this event as a vendor, please contact Laura Buckley at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit our website and submit the vendor interest form. You will be contacted with information regarding fees and accommodations. We look forward to hearing from you.
