DHCP.MDB fails to archive

2003-02-03 Thread Lawrie Scott
Hi All

when I run an archive on a windows 2000 machine that host my DHCP server
the dchp.mdb file fails with an error. (in used by another process) how
can I backup / archive this file. Below is my archive copy group. I
currently run TSM 5.1.5 on windows 2000 platform and the clients are
also 5.1.5 This is just something I'm doing as a trial to market the
product and the customer is not impressed with this failure. Everything
else has worked great. Active directory backup and restore, SAP/R3
backup and restore etc etc... just this one hurdle.

Backup of Windows DHCP.mdb

2003-01-29 Thread Lawrie Scott - Persetel Q Vector
Hi All

I have TSM 5.1.5 both server and client for windows 2000. When I back up my
one server with the DHCP.mdb file on it this file fails as it is an open
file. How can I back up this file or at least ensure that it is getting
backed up in some other way.

SAP Timeout

2003-01-28 Thread Lawrie Scott - Persetel Q Vector
Hi All

I run TSM Server 5.1.5 on Windows 2000 and SAP/R3 on Tru64/UNix using the
TSM SAP TDP. I wish to know if there is a timeout value that can used to
cancel a backup if not completed within a specified time. I schedule the
backups then using a script begin the backups, which in turn perform all the
needed steps to backup my databases. However if there is a storage shortage
or some other error that causes the TDP to wait for the TSM Server, I would
like to be able to timeout the script and fail the schedule. Otherwise the
operators have to manually cancel each session as it starts up and only when
there are no more sessions will the script end and return a failure code.

Re: Oracle scheduler fails if started in background

2003-01-17 Thread Lawrie Scott - Persetel Q Vector
Not sure But the response of Completed comes from the fact that the script
is completed. I get a completed status from my TDP's as long as the script
completes, even if no tablespaces were backed up.

Subject: Oracle scheduler fails if started in background

Hi everyone,

We have strange behavior on TDP Oracle backup (TSM scheduled), we installed
exactly same configuration on another Solaris box where the scheduled
backup (in backround) completed sucessfully, as far as I know the only
difference is Solaris version 8.

All comments are welcome.

TSM Server 5.1.5.2 on W2K platform
TSM BA Client 5.1.5.0 and TDPO 5.1.5 on Solaris 2.6

If we start the scheduler in foreground, the backup completes whithout
error. We use this command:
/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsmc sched -se=tsm1_sched

If we start the scheduler in background, the backup fails, but Q EVENTS
says Completed, RMAN dos not start (no records in the RMAN Log). We use the
"at" command to start the scheduler in background:

at now
/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsmc sched -se=tsm1_sched
"ctrl-D"

Following are records from actlog, schedlog and q events, when backup
fails (shedule started in background). Also the dsm.sys file.

select distinct node_name,volume_name,stgpool_name from volumeusage where

Does anyone know a fast way to get a list of all volumes on which a node
has files of a specific subdirectory? A query of the volumeusage table
does the job on filespace level but not on file/directory level.
The only way I know is to search in the output of query content or the
corresponding select query which is very slow.

Thanks for any ideas,
Werner

SAP TDP Restore

2003-01-03 Thread Lawrie Scott - Persetel Q Vector
Hi All
I am running TSM 5.1.5 on Windows 2000 and SAP/R3 using Oracle on a TRU64
Unix Cluster. I backup the SAP Databases using the SAP/R3 TDP for Tivoli on
Tru64 Unix. I wish to restore the SPP (Production Database) to the SPQ (QA
Database) location, overwriting the SPQ database with SPP's database.
However when I use the SAPDBA tools it does not allow me to point SPP
restores to a new location. The only way I can see roumd this is to stop SPP
rename it to SPQ and then Restore SPP, or modify the *.anf File from SPP's
backup with SPQ's location. I am not very knowledgeable on SAP/R3, so any
help will be greatly appreciated. This has been requested for test purposes
and will not be the normal practice.

With the cluster consiting of 4 Compaq GS80 Servers these databases can be
running on any of the four machine, as the cluster software points to a
primary machine however if it fails the databases, applications etc. etc.
get failed over to one of the other 3 machines. So while there are 4 CPU's
the is not physical distinction as to where the databases and applications
are running. Therefore all 4 CPU's share the same directory structure on a
set of SAN disks aswell.

I'm not sure about the pricing but HP have good small libraries. I use an
old DLT7000 system that works great. Maybe look at some libraries and then
check the TSM site for compatibility.

The Mountwait parameter only specifies how long the process will wait for a
tape to be mounted after the process has been allocated the necessary
drive(s).

If I understand Henrik's question, there doesn't appear to be a parameter
which governs how long a process will wait for the tape drives to become
available.

We just run a script which cancels all Reclaim processes, whether they are
active, waiting for tape mounts or waiting for drives.

Hi all!

Is there a server option or a another why to specify for how long a process
will be active?

Example, If all drives are busy I might not want reclamation to be pending
for hours until two drive becomes available.

Expiring Data / Versioning

2002-12-18 Thread Lawrie Scott - Persetel Q Vector
Hi All

Thanx in advance, new to this and not sure I've set this up correctly.

I originally wanted to keep 7 versions and delete after 30 days any deleted
files.

I run TSM Server 5.1 and I'm trying to expire all my data down to only one
copy of the data. My versions were set to 7 and the rest as shown, I changed

Re: Microsoft SQL Hot/Backup

2002-11-25 Thread Lawrie Scott
Hi

We use Microsoft SQL's Tools and TSM to back up the flat file it creates.
Otherwise you could use the TSM TDP for SQL to script these backups.

Good Morning TSM'ers,

I am sure some of you are using some type of setting or software to
backup your SQL databases in windows 2k. If you could share some names
of software, or knowledge about this it will be apreciated.

Thanks,
Camilo M.

Session Not Completing

2002-11-20 Thread Lawrie Scott
Hi All

I have 30 Windows 2000 Servers backing up to a Windows TSM 5.1 Server.
One of the servers when scheduled to backup begins its schedule and
backup then just sits doing nothing, it never comes back to the server
with a status and you have to cancel the session manually then it
reports back a ? which is very informative. When you look in the
dsmerror and dsmsched logs there is nothing to indicate an error, other
than the cancelled session.

This seems to happen on only this server and we have tried re-installing
the software modifying the dsm.opt file, re-installing the schedule
service with no change. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanx in advance.

Compaq Network Settings

2002-11-20 Thread Lawrie Scott
Hi All

I have a compaq Proliant 370 with 2 750Mhz CPU's With 2Gig of Memory and
2 1Gigabit Network Cards, teamed with 1 active and the other is a
failover standby card. Does anyone have some info on how best to setup
these cards for the best performance. I have a number of errors where I
get timeouts on these cards and they both show Receive Overruns when
this happens. If anyone has an answer on how best to setup these cards I
would be really grateful as, I have tried just about everything and the
only thing I can get to work is by reducing max sessions to 40 and
increasing the network card setting for receiving to the max of 768,
also running only one card the other one has been removed.

Hi all

Thanx for all the replies some of the tricks have helped a bit. However
the TCPWindowsSize of 16 is set as CISCO has a limitation of
TCPwindowsize of 16 and whenever we increase it to 63 the server then
begins to timeout server requests and no backups happen.

SAP TDP on TSM 5.1 Open Sessions

2002-11-05 Thread Lawrie Scott
Hi

TSM 5.1.1 running on a Compaq Proliant 2gig Mem 2 750Mhz Processor with
2 TL891 Libraries with 2 Drives each.
The SAP/R3 on Oracle runs on Compaq Alpha Server running Tru64 Unix with
4 Processors in a 4 machine cluster.

I run a SAP Log backup at 13:00 and a Full backup of the three (SPP,
SPQ, PSD) databases at 21:00. Generally these run fine and I receive and
e-mail upon completion showing the completion status. However now again
the job fails for whatever error, and then leaves open sessions on the
Tru64 Unix servers, which I then have to manually go and cancel to get
the job to complete. These session are not displayed as sessions on the
TSM server but only in the background on the Tru64 Server. Once I have
manually cancelled these sessions the script running the backup
completes and I get an e-mail notification showing a failed status.

Is there something I can set to get these session to cancel
automatically if a certain time period has passed. The only way I can
currently identify these session is with the ps -ef |grep command
then kill the session. Sometimes this error goes unnoticed and sits in
this state for a few days. It has no impact on future scheduled backups.

Thanx for the help in advance

SAP TDP Multiple Storage Pools

2002-10-28 Thread Lawrie Scott
Hi

Running Server 5.1 and the latest TDP for SAP/R3 using Oracle on a
Compaq Tru64 Unix Platform.

I have been asked to do a weekly backup to a separate storage pool, a
monthly to its own storage pool. Currently I run a daily backup with 14
versions and this is a full backup each day to a storage pool called
SAP. How would I set it up to look at different storage pool depending
on the backup type specified. Setting up the scripts to run the backup
is not the issue but rather how would the dsm files and SAP config files
be set to handle multiple storage pools, and schedules.

Arnaud,

TSM comes with a rich set of SQL functions. Get a hold of Andy Raibeck's
"Using the SQL Interface" manual, it is very useful (search the archives to
find where it is)

Date functions include

Day - Day of month
dayname
dayofweek - 1..7 Sunday..Saturday
dayofyear
daysinmonth
daysinyear
Monthname

I've just been reviewing the manual and there are some neat ones that I'm
going to try

coalesce(value,value,value...) returns the first non-null in the list of
values
nullif(expression1,expression2) returns null if the expressions are equal or
expression1 otherwise

Andy, your manual is great, but its a bit out of date. Any chance of an up
to date version or even better making it a part of the shipped manual set?

Hi *SM'ers,

I'm looking for an SQL command to check the current day of week, before
starting the conditional excution of a subsequent script. I already found
something that seems to work, looking like :

Script blah ...
select date_time, message from actlog where
cast((current_timestamp-date_time) minutes as decimal(8,0)) < 1 and
dayname(date_time) = 'Tuesday'
if(rc_ok) goto tuesday
If (rc_notfound) goto restofweek
tuesday :
run script1
exit
restofweek :
run script2
exit

Unfortunately this kind of select statement take ages to complete, because
it has to go through all the activity log to find the last lines written, as
we keep one month of it !
Does anybody have a faster way doing this kind of query/test ? (without
calling an AIX script)
Thanks in advance
Cheers.

Arnaud

HI Joe

I do an Oracle backup and SAP backups the Unix staff have done a whole lot
of fancy scripting for me and extract data to a log file which is then
e-mailed to all the relevant people each day. Possibly you could get some
scripting done for this. I have incled a sample output below from our daily

If you require the script used maybe I can arrange a copy.

Recently installed TDP for Oracle. DBA's would like to be paged "real time"
if a database backup fails. Aside from the paging part, does anyone know
where I can pull the status of an Oracle database
backup as soon as it completes. I don't want to extract from the client
logs (when would I start looking?) And the Activity log does not supply all
that much useful information. Any help would be

Re: More on Repeat Backups...

2002-10-16 Thread Lawrie Scott

Hi Jerry

I'm new to this list but your problem sounds like a problem I have where the
system objects fail. On further investigation I discovered it was only the
event logs, which are no use if the system crashses and needs a full restore
anyway. So with the authority of my desktop guys I excluded the event logs
directory from the backup and from then on my system Objects passed. I found
this only to be a problem on servers where the event log was very busy.

First - let me thank you all for the responses to my original question.
Your answers have gotten me thinking some - I say some, because at my age,
it's hard to get everything going again, and I suffer from "senior moments"
too often.

Most of the answers revolved around the suggestion that I could exclude
something - either the files themselves, or the System Object itself if I
get the newest client. This seems to me to be treating the symptom, rather
than the problem - if I exclude them, obviously, I can never restore them
(DUH!). If these do get corrupted or deleted, it would appear that I could
be in for another bout with my desktop support folks - they just had my
Laptop for 3 weeks - I'm not eager to deal with them again. Now I will be
the first to admit that I'm not MS Certified on any OS, and so the idea of
excluding the whole System Object is scary as well - doesn't that include a
big portion of registry information if I need to do a complete restore? Or
is the idea of a Bare Metal restore with TSM one that has died?

In my (sometimes overly simplistic) mind, I remember the ADSM class I
attended where the instructor identified how a file was determined to have
changed - either the date, the time, or the size has changed. Has TSM
changed this philosophy? After all, I look at the files in question, and
nothing has changed that I can see externally. Shouldn't there be a better
approach than to say "well, they're a part of the system object, and
therefore you need to exclude them." Shouldn't the software be smart enough
to figure this out?
