A worn Universal gripper cage could result in "get" errors. See "worn Universal

If you have already had the grippers replaced, you might look at other hardware

2010-06-29 Thread Len Boyle
Hello Geoff,

It looks like you might have a problem that we had this past month.

Do you have at least one Ethernet connection to the library set up so that you
can use the web interface. It sounds like you might.

We had parts of the gripper replaced multiple times. We upgraded the firmware
to see if would fix things, it did not. But it did have fixes for the
hand/gripper.

We found that we had the hand set to no movement, then the backup servers could
not do anything with the library. This showed as an error on the summary page.
And the error showed up when viewing the library error logs.
We also saw an error in fetching a tape cart before the stop motion. It turns
out that this was part of the problem.

The ce's found that one of the tape drive was loose in its slot and when a tape
cart was moved from the slot next to the tape drive we had problems. They
replaced the tape drive and things were better.

Let us know what you find.

Subject: [ADSM-L] TS3500 firmware/hardware issues

I've been having numerous problems lately with our 3584 and wondered if
those of you out there with one would mind sharing your firmware level.
Ours is on 7270, with LTO2 drives at 73V1. I've been on this for some
time and don't believe it is related to the issues we're having but you
never know I guess.

I believe the issues I'm having are related to the company performing
maintenance these days. I say that because when IBM was on the hook I
never had an issue that wasn't resolved the same day they were called
and it never took more than one visit to get anything fixed, never.
These guys break cables and say they didn't do it, replace drives like
I've never seen before just because a tape was stuck in one, replace
drives with broken drives, replaced the wrong drive, and at the moment,
going on 2 weeks now, can't get the robot to work on either LPAR for
more than a few minutes. I'm disgusted with the support so I'm looking
for info from anyone who may have had similar robot issues in the past.
It's been difficult to say the least now that I don't have a single
source to troubleshoot these issues.

I get these on both systems, drives go offline, paths go offline,
nothing mounts, the robot can't find tapes, it can't dismount tapes from
drives. Seperate control path to a completely different set of drives.
I'm looking for anything anyone can pass on that I can take to these
guys to see if they've though about or replaced certain parts.

I can tell you one gripper went out about 3 weeks about and ever since
then the library has been a mess. They've replaced grippers and other
parts in the robot itself, all of which I don't have a list. When using
the web GUI to run an inventory I've gotten errors, y motor won't move,
x motion failure, excessive drift grippers errors when nothing was in
them, accessor degraded, among other things. Bottom line to me is I
never had these problems till they touched the robot and since I have no
training on that unit I was wondering if anyone out there may have had
some interaction with a tech that knows what he's doing that might help
give some info that would help me communicate something worthwhile to
these guys. Any advice, besides the obvious of get IBM to fix it, is
welcome. I already tried that and didn't get anywhere.

TSM errors I believe are all related to the library issue and I don't
believe that either LPAR truly has an issue since they have separate
hardware, paths and drives. The only unit they have in common is the
robot itself.

The ese programs are exchange utils. This is a std part of the exchange backup.
After the snapshot is taken this util makes sure that the data in the snapshot
is good. In the pre vss backups this check was done by the online api.

I don't know if this is relevant under 2010 but under exchange 2007 VSS
backups to TSM automatically ran a consistency check using a program
with 'ese' in the name as the shapshot to TSM portion of the process
ran, and this check was single-threaded.

Perhaps there is something similar happening under 2010. Sorry its so

Hello Gary,

Two thoughts.

1) if you use the virtualnodename option, I do not think that you have to use
the set access option.

2) I believe that you can use a global admin userid, a client admin userid or
the by default the client nodename. See the text below in which just hitting
enter would work.

Have you tried the source side dedupe?

Any backup product would by definition have to backup "changes", even
inane ones like these.
However, one that dedupes at the source (e.g. Avamar, Syncsort) might
have the advantage here, in sending less actual data during the backup.

readonly. However, this was the first time I tried to move data from an LTO2

Presumably, you would have tested the ability to read the old LTO2
tapes at the OS level, before committing to TSM use, via tapeutil or
the like, so as to assure technology usability. Did that work, or
turn up any anomalies?

Technote 1269453 indicates that LTO2 tapes should be usable in an LTO4
environment, providing that the stipulated actions are undertaken.
The technote doesn't say whether any path redefinition is needed to
make it work, however. I'd use SHow LIBRary to do the most reveal on
what TSM thinks of the arrangement. Beyond that, you may have to
contact TSM Support.

2010-05-12 Thread Len Boyle
Hello John,

I have not used tsm on Linux, but I have used ibm tape drives on linux. I used
the ibm lintape driver. These tape drives were fc based. I am not sure if your
tape drives are fc based. I am also not sure if the lintape driver supports
scsi tape drives.

I do have a tsm server running on windows and they recommended that we use the
ibm tape drivers and not the tsm drivers for the newer tape drives.

So I am doing a bit of guessing here.

Since the tape driver is the piece between the os and the hardware I would
expect that be the first part that needs looking at. It might be a change in
the o/s api used by the tape driver.

With the lintape driver you can test out the tape drive without tsm running. Do
you have another box that you can test out the different tape drivers and tape
drives?

I just looked at the lintape readme and it appears that it only is supported
with IBM devices.

Does HP supply drivers for use with their tape drives and Linux?

You might want to call IBM service for tsm and see what they might suggest.

I remember seeing this note on a past adsm-l mailing list entry.

Len,
Thanks for your reply. No, we did not upgrade any of the TSM
software, including the tape drivers. We were running the
TIVsm-tsmscsi-6.1.3-1.x86_64 version both before and after the RedHat
5.2 to 5.4 upgrade.
I have since found out that there is a 6.1.3-3 version of the
driver. Since they are running the 6.1.3.3 version of TSM, they
probably should be running that version of the driver, too. I don't
know why or why not, since that is before they became my customer. The
previous TSM admins that set all this up are no longer working for this
company.
But I hesitate to recommend upgrading the drivers as a course of
action unless I can point to a concrete reason why. I went through the
Release Notes and Readmes and could not find any hint of a driver
problem being addressed. None of the tape driver APARs described since
6.1.3 in this Technote sound like they have anything to do with our
problem:

Any insight would be appreciated.

Re: Open Solaris?

2010-03-31 Thread Len Boyle
You can think of open solaris relates to solaris as fedora is to red hat Linux.
It is a test bed for the future releases of solaris. Open Solaris is both x86
and sparc.
Last year they were saying that most of a release of open solaris this year
would become solaris 11. I am not sure if this roadmap will hold given the
Oracle purchase of sun.

See

http://www.opensolaris.com/
and
http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Main/

I was told that one could buy support from sun for a subset of the Open Solaris
releases.

Re: TSM client checklist for backup.

2010-03-18 Thread Len Boyle
Are backupexec and tsm used for the same client at the same time.
If so I believe that one problem, or at least is the reset of the archive bit
by backupexec. I seem to remember that this would trigger a backup by tsm.

In general I believe that tsm will backup a file if the file metadata/catalog
data changes. I wonder if this is also the case with the use of the subfile
feature.

Please correct me if I am wrong this is old fuzzy memory as I have not check in
the recent past.

Is there a list of what the TSM client checks for on a file to determine if
the file needs to be backed up? I have a client that is running both
BackupExec and TSM on servers and he's telling me that TSM backs up way more
than backupExec and 'what the users have changes.' Using their words.

This customer also has TPC Data and is using the Files as Risk report to
estimate how much data needs to be backed up. But I think that just goes on
the archive bit and the last modification date/time of the files. Which is
only a fraction of what TSM uses to determine a file's eligibility for
backup.

Re: Ejecting cleaning cartridges from the TS3500/3584

2010-03-17 Thread Len Boyle
If the 3584 library is doing the cleanings, the backup software never sees the
cleaning cart(s).
But one might be able to do this an snmp get command.

I don't have a SCSI library, but I should think it would be relatively easy to
set up a simple monitor based upon dsmadmc -consolmode to watch for message
ANR8915I, and over time to issue Query LIBVolumes Format=Detailed to look for
"Cleanings Left" (or Select from LIBVOLUMES, to act on the CLEANINGS_LEFT
field) to perform a Checkout when the time was right, accompanied by some
message to the operator.

Re: Ejecting cleaning cartridges from the TS3500/3584

2010-03-17 Thread Len Boyle
We have alms configured, so we let the library do the cleaning.

If we have a semi-bad tape drive we can end up going thru a cleaning cart.
We have configured the ts3500 to send snmp traps to a server which handles the
traps.
One of them indicates that a cleaning cart has expired. The trap handler
forwards this message to the operations folks who replace the cart.

In you cannot set up the trap handler there is a work around. if you have
someone moving tapes in and out of your library, the library posts a message on
the front panel that a cleaning tape has expired and needs replacing. It spells
out which cleaning tape.

Richard,

unfortunately, in most cases the TS3500 will manage the cleaning, and the
cleaners will not be visible to TSM. With ALMS, this is basically the only
viable option. The only way to find out about worn out cleaners is via either
the web interface or the operator panel on the lib itself. The most viable
solution is to just put 10 or more in the lib, and check one every three months
for any that need replacing, manually

Ok. I've got a bit of time at the moment so I thought I'd revisit this.

I'm in the middle of shifting data back from the USB drives to the main storage
array and making that much bigger to accommodate the data. This test system
only used a 40Gb pool on the main raid array - everything else gets shipped out
to the USB drives via a migration.

To recap the issue, I've noticed is that when a drive is around 50-60% full I
get an ANR8341I End-of-volume event in the logs and a new volume is asked for.
While I would expect this for a full volume, I wouldn't expect it with a half
full volume.

I have copied the most relevant information
below:

Unavailable tapes of any count would be distressing to me. That is data
that can not be read. If they are unavailble due to drives needing
cleaning, they are normally recoverable just by update vol access=reado
(or access=readw). I used to have to do that...a lot.

If the tape drive can not read the internal label, read the data, or
write to the tape it can be marked unavailable. That could be a drive
problem (dirty, broken, wearing out) or a media problem. Check your
actlog for errors related to that tape, or other errors on the same
drive.

If you have volumes that are marked UNAVAILABLE you might also want to
check for "Volumes Made Private" to prevent reuse.

Re: RMAN error allocating TDP channel....

2010-01-23 Thread Len Boyle
Good Day Mario,

After the link was created did you bounce the oracle data base. I am not sure
if it has changed, or different with the latest TSM client. But I was told that
the Oracle data base loads the libobk.so when it starts up and unless you
bounce Oracle it will not reload the file to pick up the tsm supplied copy.
Also is this a 32bit or 64bit instance of the Oracle data base.

A look on google seems to indicate that the problem may be a permissions
problem with the tsm log files.
One of the urls to look at is

We are working on setting up encryption with LTO4's and we are using multiple
backup products so there are several different methods to control encryption.

Several emails in the recent past talk about how to encrypt or not using the
tools within TSM.
If you are not using tsm's application encryption support you can control
encryption with bar code rules if using a 3584 tape library.
If you are using netbackup or networker you can use the volume pool id data
written in the tape label for this control.

For TS3310 tape libraries there is no bar code support that I have found.

Len

PS The last time I checked hardware encryption in lto4's is at no extra cost.
If going by the rule of a new lto tape drive every two years the lto5 tape
drive should have been release in 2009. Rumor has it that they should be
released in 2010.

See the url www.lto.org for a little bit more info.

Hi Joni,
We use Application Managed Encryption, with IBM 3584 library and LTO4
drives. This only works for a storage pool with DRIVEENCRYPTION=ON. It
does not encrypt the db backup tape. TSM handles the keys. We use this
for off-site archive tapes. Currently in the process of recalling all
LTO2 archive tapes and moving them to LTO4 tapes in this Encrypted

Not hard to set up. Checkout this link:

Hello Gary,

I believe that you are correct in that TSM does not support more than one
option set per client.

But you might be able to do what you want at the source level.

You might have a file named general.options
And a file namedwebsrv.options.
Then at the os level you could create a new file with the merged contents of
the above two files and use that file as the source for your option set.

Re: Alternative to TSM

Hello Bob,

A different look at your comment about channel attached tape support for Linux.
I have not worked with Linux on Z, but I assume from you comment that Linux on
Z supports fibre tape drives.
If so then the fix to sharing tape drives between z/os and Linux on z should be
doable with a small change.
It turns out that the channel attached tapes drives are really open system
fibre tape drives attached to an AIX box which translates the channel data
stream to a scsi data stream.
The solution to the sharing is to allow the aix box to share the tape drives
with other open systems.

The hard part would be to convince IBM that they should do it and that it
should be a simple elegant (not fool proof) solution that does not cost two
arms and a leg to purchase.
I say this as I think at one time IBM offered a pc to set the time on the
mainframe from a external reference source that was on the order of $25,000,
when any *nix or pc system could just use the network.

It integrates easliy with DFSMS.The combination of FDR/Upstream and FDR on z/OS

need both to get file-level dumps.I just find it idiotic that TSM doesn’t have

Re: alternatives to TSM due to license costs

2009-12-30 Thread Len Boyle
Hello Bryan,

This is an interesting topic. Here are several thoughts and questions.

Licensing for NetBackup is also based on the class of the server and the class
of the clients.
The pricing keeps changing as some things that used to have a separate optional
cost are merged into the base cost.
As Both IBM and Symantec like to use 3rd party sellers it might also be
interesting to find the best price.

EMC's Avamar and Symantec's Pure disk are a little bit more like TSM in that
they only do incremental backups. They take this a bit further alone then TSM
in that they do block or segment incremental backups. They are a little
different in that the block/segment is single instance across all backup
clients covered by a backup server. I wonder if IBM is going to add this
feature. Note this is not media or storage pool dedupe which Avamar, Pure disk
and TSM support.
They are also like TSM in that they require a data base to hold the meta-data.
But different in that they hold the data blocks/segments also. This makes
things interesting in that as far as I can tell a full backup of the backup
server is not possible other than by replication. This make things interesting
if one worries about backup server database corruption due to a software bug.
I believe that comm vault also supports this backup model. But they are a
little bit different in that they will move the data from the backup server to
tape in the dedupe format, where the others reconstitute the deduped data
before writing the data to tape.

I am not sure if Syncsort and FDR also play in this game.

In the Microsoft only world, Microsoft now sells a vss based product that works
on windows and windows data base products including Exchange and Sharepoint.
The last I heard they do not support other products such as Oracle DB and IBM
DB/2.

One could also look at hardware solutions from vendors such as data domain and
netapp for many of one's backup needs.

Not as full featured as the above products, has anyone been looking at the open
sourced products?

2009-12-22 Thread Len Boyle
We have seen this problem when the tape drive is powered off then back on. It
appears that the tape driver is messed up after this power cycle.
It does not happen that often, so the fixing procedure has not been totally
worked out. This is with the ibm tape drivers on windows.
If in the changer does not seem to show up in the Device Manager app within the
Computer Management app. Then reinstall the windows driver. The changer is
defined, but as an unknown device.
That does not always seem to fix TSM (in our case TSM is an old version). If
tsm will not bring the path online, I have fixed that by deleting the path and
defining it again.

Re: TSM 6.1 De-dupe + NDMP

2009-12-03 Thread Len Boyle
I am not sure how tsm does it. But if one is using another backup product to do
the NDMP backups on a netapp filer, you have to reference a snapshot that
already exists (ex hourly.0) or the backup product and ask for a snapshot to be
created for the backup. We started using this other product long before the tsm
folks started to support ndmp.

But a snapshot should not stop a dedupe as the dedupe depending on design
should be working at the block or segment level.

If the data is encrypted that would hurt a dedupe.

Of course you might not find much dedupe with the incremental backups are they
are only the changes.
Depending on the data, I would suspect that you would not get much dedupe
unless you are storing multiple full backups on the dedupe device. Unless you
have duplicated data located across the backed up filesystems/directories.

that to play nicely with TSM I had to set up a
server_param server_2 -facility NDMP -modify snapsure -value 1 on the
Celerra's control station.

Which effectively told the Celerra to do a snapshot before sending the
data to TSM.

Now if that is the case, and it truly is a snapshot based off of
changed delta's but not the whole fileset, I could see that each
snapshot that is backed up is not able to deduplicate...

I don't have much experience with the way NetApp's do their backups
with NDMP but I'm wondering if it is the same way, and of course how
others are doing theirs and if it is indeed de-duplicating or not.

JR,

I can't. The second file system name is the location to which the first
file system is restored. I create a script with multiple dsmc commands,
each one restoring one file system. Assuming your data is on separate
tapes or on disk, you have to run multiple commands to restore more than
one file system at a time.

Or some cable is not plugged into the drive unit. Of course I would assume if

2009-08-19 Thread Len Boyle
If one is using the ibm 3584(aka TS3500) then the wwn does not changes on a
straight up swap-out. The wwn goes with the slot in the library used to hold
the tape drive and not the tape drive itself. And with lto-3 tape drives and
better, Our IBM ce's have to update the new tape drive with the old tape
drive's serial number as the maint contract tracks enablement by the original
serial number. So neither the wwn or serial numbers change.

If "replacing" the drive is truly a straight up swap-out, the the new drive
will have a new wwn that will need to be zoned in the san switch. Then in
AIX it will show up as a new rmt device.

Hi all,

This situation has never happened to me before so I'm a little unsure of
the steps and order to fix it. Running AIX 5.3 with a TSM instance at
5.5.1. LTO drives are zoned in through a switch to the TSM server, 2
drives to each fibre card. Support for the IBM drives was not renewed
with IBM so it looks like this new group has no idea how to 'fix' drives
and would rather replace them, something that 'never' happened with IBM
so I'm not quite sure exactly what needs to be done to get this drive
back online.

I know the references in TSM need to be updated so I have removed the
path and drive. When adding them back the path failed so it seems like I
need to get AIX to see the new drive and not sure if I also need to do
anything on the switch. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I typically
have no issues so it's hard to gain and keep knowledge when 98% of the
time I'm "watching" the system instead of "doing something" with it.
Since I don't have a test system built similarly I can't play around and
create documents to refer to when the 'what did I do when that happened'
scenario comes up.

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Or use the latest firmware for the TS3500. If you want/need to go to a
version 8.x firmware you have to have ALMS. Version 7.x is the latest for
without ALSM. With the Version 8.x you get the builtin CIMOM agent if you
want to use the TPC to monitor/report on your TS3500(s).

ALMS is required if you use the new high density frames. These can provide
three times the tape density as the normal frames. ALMS is needed to
automatically manage which tapes are located in which slots, keeping the
most frequently used tapes in the most readily accessible physical
slots. Another advantage of the virtualization that ALMS provides.

Re: Errno = 23, 1167 and stuck tapes

2009-07-21 Thread Len Boyle
Henrik, when we first installed lto-4 tape drives, we had a few problems with
them. The IBM ce downloaded a dump of data from the tape drive and send that on
to the higher level support folks. They asked to update the firmware, which was
just release. This help us greatly.

Our tape drives are installed in an IBM 3584 (aka TS3500) so the tape drive
dump can be gathered either via the CE's laptop tools or via the IBM library
web interface.

If you are using IBM's drivers, you should be able to download the drive dump
via a utility supplied with the driver code. In our case this was not an option
as the tape drives were attached to an netapp box.

Henrik -

I don't have a direct answer for you; but my suspicion is that drive
microcode is involved, perhaps in conjunction with cartridge vs. drive
characteristics. The IBM readme document S1003097 for LTO4 shows a
very large number of problems that have had to be corrected,
suggestive of more, ongoing. The stuck tape situation may suggest a
problem managing the mechanics and/or timing of drive operations.
Given the mechanical malfunction which results, I'd have your CE
attend to the next event, to examine the conditions logged in the
drive's memory, to try to uncover the cause. The inability of an OS
command to effect tape dismount indicates a serious problem. If the
CE can't be gotten in time during the next event, see if you can have
the operator get at the drive to record any error codes on its panel.
Make sure the CE pores over the sense bytes you're getting from the
drive.

You are correct in that the TS3500 (3584)'s drive WWN are tied to the Drive

move the old drive's serial number into the replacement drives for LT03 and

In fact we found out that for lto-3 and lto-4 tape drives in an IBM 3584
library, it is required that they change the serial number to match the
old tape drive. Because IBM tracks the drives by serial number for maint
contracts. This we found when the serial numbers that we send in for a
maint contract renewal were kicked out as field engineering had not
been updating the serial numbers. But not for lto-2 tape drives.

The majority of our TSM servers are AIX and we do have a setup where we

I need thoughts/suggestions/help on how to deal with SAN attached tape
drive replacements when a library is shared amongst 5-servers.

We just has a drive replaced, therefore giving us a new serial number
(3494ATL - TS1130). All servers that use these drives/libraries are
RedHat Linux and use very current lin_tape drivers.

Currently, the method we use is to bounce each server so the system
rescans the SAN and gets the new serial number.

In the past, just stopping the TSM server and then restarting the
lin_tape driver would often be enough. Now with the latest lin_tape
drivers, I don't see the lin_taped daemon running any more.

Yes, I have tried updating the paths on the library manager server and
telling it to autodetect but that didn't help.

There has to be a better way! If you have a similar configuration, how

Hello Bill,

As other have posted, TSM should handle the backups without problems related to
the use of different network domains.

But. You might want to look at why there are different domains. Might you
expect that in the future that one or more of the 3 sister companies might be
sold or split off totally.
If so you might want to set up your tsm domains, storage pools etc, so that the
sister companies do not share resources such as tapes.

All 3 Domains will somehow, have access to central services like internet,

If the TSM Server is say in Domain A, is it possible to backup clients in

Are there any drawbacks ?

All of my cleaning tapes are "CU" not "L1" (CLNU55CU). I didn't realize
there was a specific cleaning tape per LTO generation.

We print our own labels and found that Xerox Phaser (thermal wax) output was
too shiny; the 3584 tolerates labels from our HP though.

Early on in the use of our first 3584 we had the problem and we had the ce
talking about doing the eraser procedure.
The interesting think was that the tapes in question and their labels were
purchased from IBM.
We found that a few firmware updates and slowing down the bar code scan rate
seemed to have fixed the problem. I suspect that it was mostly the firmware
updates.

We have not seen this problem, but we are using 6chars followed by the L1 chars

One thing you can check is if your library supports 10 char volsers.
I remember seeing a note that a past firmware update for the 3584 was adding

Also are you using library controlled cleaning or software controlled cleaning?

We have ordered some cleaning cartridges, they are IBM tapes but from a

I found an IBM technote about shiny labels and sent this to our
procurement people and they got the labels swapped to less shiny
backing.

However, I've received them through today and they still won't scan,
does anybody know the exact barcode format that the labels should be,
for example one is labelled CLNU030L1, IBM notes say 8 characters should
be ok. Does the L1 classify in this?

However, our previous labels which were CLNU00L1 read ok? should the
first section of the barcode starting CLNU match on both tapes if the
same format is used? I'm wondering if they haven't used the correct
barcode format for the barcodes as they look different between these two
tapes at the beginning of the barcode label.

Any ideas? Has anyone come across this, I'd be grateful for any info.

Cheers,
Jane.

They are suggesting using adaptive subfile backup to backup the VMware

were limited to files less than 2GB in size, which would seem to me to make
this recommendation of extremely limited usefulness.

Thanks for any light-shedding.

Hello Eric,

If the windows folks are using DPM I suspect that they are using the Microsoft
Hyper-V support and not vmware. I have not heard that TSM support Hyper-V

When DPM first came out they only supported backing up to disk. To move the
disk backups to tape required another backup product like tsm to backup the DPM
server.

I know that Microsoft has added tape support to DPM, but the TSM tape support
may still be better.

You can always install a tsm client on each virtual machine, but I suspect that
the windows folks would not like that.

Subject: [ADSM-L] Backing up running VM's

Hi TSM-ers!
Our windows department is looking at different backup products for
backing up their server.
They have two major problems with TSM. One I cannot solve: the TSM
client license is processor based, so quite expensive for the majority
of small servers. I think we all agree that the TSM client license
should be capacity based, but IBM aint listening here...
The other problem is that they state TSM cannot backup running VM's.
They now use a product called DPM to make snapshot copies of running
VM's.
I'm not really familiar with Window server management, especially when
it comes to virtualization, but I know one thing: TSM is one of the
leading, cutting edge backup products, so I doubt TSM is not supporting
this feature.
Does anybody know whether it is possible to make snapshot backups with
TSM of running VM's?
Thank you very much in advance for any reply!!!
Kind regards,
Eric van Loon

Normally for TSM clients you license to run the client but not a specific
version. So one would not thing that you would be charged again. In the past
one was able to connect a z/os client to a non-z/os server.

The more interesting question is there a 6.1 z/os client. If not will there be
one.

Hello Michael,

This is a semi wild guess, If this was windows I would suggest you look at the
Unicode setting for the filespace. It has been a while since I have had a
novell client so I am not sure if they support UNICODE or not and what is the
max path and segment length for the novell client.

But if it is Unicode it might be counting the multiple bytes of a Unicode

Upon doing initial backup got this error:

The file name seems to be in hebrew (My terminal is incapable of
displaying the hebrew characters properly).
Other files using hebrew characters seem to be backed up ok.

Any insights what can be done about this problem (besides the obvious
"have the user rename his file")?

Client is at version 5.5.2/Linux. So is the server.

Over ten years ago I was at a presentation by a MD that was proposing the
creation of a xml standard for medical records to help with this. His personal
stake was in making it easier to use historical medical records for medical
research.

Also along these lines I remember seeing a small article in a trade magazine
that a company, I think Rockwell, was going to make a system for recording
holograms on microfiche. There would be a machine that could read the
microfiche and display remotely. In theory the microfiche can be used for over
100 years, better than existing computer optical and magnetic media.
Also because it was a hologram if the media was scratched or otherwise damaged,
the data could still be retrieved. As far as I know this never was released to
the public.

Also along these lines I saw an article this past week that GE was working on
new optical media, which I believe was on the order of 500 gig. This would be a
large increase over existing dvd's but still smaller than existing tapes and
disks.

Soapbox time.

The media is not important - any sane retention policy will require that the
information be copied at least annually, with enough copies for redundancy.

BUT -

to be able to PROCESS the data 25 years from now imposes additional
requirements.

First and formost -- the data will NOT be in any format except unloaded
flat-file; ASCII, UTF-8, or UTF-16 encoding. You will NOT be able to process
proprietary data formats 25 years from now.

Look at the Domesday Book - the version written on parchment or vellum in 1086
is still readable. The BBC digitized it in 1986 and found it almost impossible
to find systems to read the digitized version in 2002 - 16 years later. You're
trying for 25 years.

Re: Cloned Win servers and multiple backups

2009-05-05 Thread Len Boyle
Rick,

If your hostnames are unique in of themselves, you can leave the nodename out
of the dsm.opt file. TSM will use the hostname for the tsm nodename.

If you have clients with the name of xyz.abc.com and xyz.qxr.com then you would
have a problem with this scheme.

Subject: [ADSM-L] Cloned Win servers and multiple backups

This is a strange problem.

Once in a while, our Windows support team will clone a Windows server. The
clone will have the exact same TSM setup as the source server. I'm not
familiar with the Win BA client, but it seems it always has a nodename line
for the dsm.sys file, so the clone reports to TSM server that it's the same
node as the clone source. They both appear to respond to the same
schedule. This results in the new server performing good backups to the
exact same node as the server that is the clone source. The end result
seems to be to two different servers happily backing up the same TSM node.
Obviously what we get is a useless mess. When they clone a system they are
supposed to use a source without a TSM setup, or, clean out the TSM setup
right away, but sometimes this doesn't happen. I've tried to find a way to
detect this from the TSM server, but I'm not coming up with anything
obvious. I'm interested if anyone else has fought this problem and what
you've done.

Thanks!

Rick

No virtual I/O.

Assignment policy - gobi, volser ranges 444000-444999
  sahara, volser ranges 333000-333999
All others - "shared", whatever that means.

All cleaning tapes start as "CLN..."

And like I say, we only seem to have problems with 333026 and 333063.

Fascinating.

Good Afternoon,

Can we assume as the this is a cluster, that you are backing up the passive
node of the exchange cluster.

We are using a different product for exchange backups, but there are at least
two problems that can cause problems with the passive node backup.
For one of them we see the snapshot for the first storage group does not work
correctly and the backup does not have a snapshot to backup.

Can you relate what the ese event logs on the exchange server are reporting for
this backup.
Also you should be able to find tsm logs with more detail.

Hi David,
TSM 5.x support any filesystem in Linux as long your kernel can mount the
filesystem to an mounting point.
The only things TSM for Linux don't support is backing up RAW filesystems where
an application write direct to a device node.

If all the ACLs are updated daily I guess thats not a problem, just
update them again after the restore :)

Or make a script that saves the ACLs before backup to a file and run as
a preschedulecmd.

Sounds like it could be worth it to avoid unnecessarily backing up 15 TB of
data every day.

Howard,

Can you give the list a little more details on the Exchange system backup of
1.2 TB in about 4 or so hours.

How many exchange storage groups do you have and how many of them backup up in
parallel?
How large are they?
Are you using multiple nics of 1gig each or a 10gig nic?

Not necessarily. You would think so, but in my experience your at about
the break even point. Due to the SAN having to go to tape, as opposed
to being able to go to disk on a LAN backup. I backup a few Exchange
systems via TDP that equal about 1.2 TB in about 4 or so hours.

However, a good strategy would be to do a full once a week or month and
do diffs or incremental each day for speed's sake.

You can run the commands from a script external of tsm.

Something like perl, rexx, A unix shell, or windows powershell.
You can run the dsmc command from the script where the script process the
output of the command, the script would then build one or more scripts to be
run from within the script.

Hello,

is there any way to pipe use the output of one command as an input of
another? For example if I want to cancel a running space reclamation of a
certain storagepool. So I first have to get the process number and cancel
this process. What I'm looking for is something like this:

select process_num from processes where process='Space Reclamation' and
status like '%TAPE_FILESYSTEM%' | cancel process

Obviously this doesn't work, but is there another way to get this done?

Re: 3584 web interface

2008-10-23 Thread Len Boyle
Good Morning Joe,

We have been running into the same issue. We did not know about turning off and
on the IP Port.

We have been resetting the library to fix the problem. Luckily it does not
happen all the time.
IBM did tell us that they thought that things would improve if we upgraded to
the latest level of the firmware on the 3584.

Of course upgrading opened a new can of worms. In the past, if you forget
anyone who has a library with DLT8000 support, there was only one track of
firmware levels.
Now there appears to be at least two, the 8160 and 7379 levels.
Our CE is telling us that the 8160 is for 3592 tape drive only libraries and
the 7379 is for libraries with lto tape drives. Of course the readme files on
the IBM download site do not say this. They have the readme title of ALMS only
for the 8160 level of code. No where does it appear that they talk about 3592
only?

This two tracking of the code does not bode well.

Sigh len

PS IBM did give us one workaround. If you have a newer D frame, it has it's own
Ethernet interface. If this is connected with a different ip name and ip
address then this interface can be use for most of the web interface functions
when the primary interface is down.

Re: Method to count tapes in I/O slots of IBM3584 library

2008-07-28 Thread Len Boyle
There is a least one alternative method of letting the Operators know that the
i/o station is full and one method of not worrying about the i/o station being
full in the numbers that you are using.

1) You can turn on snmp traps for the library. One of the traps that the
library generates is that the i/o station has been in a full state for more
than 5 mins. Your snmp trap handler can send the trap information to the
Operators.

2) If you purchase the ALMS feature for the library (I am not sure if you can
talk to IBM or their rep to reduce the price from the list value, this is a
onetime feature for the library that virtualizes the slots and the i/o station.
It allows you to define the virtual i/o station to be up to 255 slots. This
means that at your current rate of 40-60 exports tapes a day, you are not going
to fill the virtual i/o station.

Chip,
Thanks for your reply.
I am familiar with the 3584's GUI, and use it all the time. My
script was meant to be an alert. If I could count on the Operators to
remember every 30 minutes all day to go take a look at the 3584 GUI and
see if there are tapes to check out, then I wouldn't need an alert.
But our Operators are busy all day with other things, and need
to be reminded or it doesn't happen. And we have 40-60 tapes going out
every day, so if they don't empty it regularly, things back up behind
the checkout commands. The script as it is written today can count how
many tapes are in the slots, and alert when there are 24 or more, which
is better than waiting until it is totally full.

Another way is to activate the 3584 GUI, and give them the link. That's
how I
enabled our operators to look at various things, such as how many slots
are
empty in the library, for those days when we get back from offsite more
tapes
than we have slots for. Ask your IBM tech. You can do all sorts of
things
with, such as update microcode/firmware, look at logs, run inventory,
send
emails, etc., etc.

John,

If I'm reading it correctly, the SML-MIB_112.mib file describes
structures in the library that can be walked with SNMP.
physicalMediaTable might be the one to look at, I have no access to a
library just at present so I can't test.

Alternatively, define another control path and use it just to run your
tapeutil commands.

We are moving to a new TSM server on a Pseries box with an IBM 3592 tape
system from a very old mainframe based TSM server. We had not planned on
moving any of the old data over to the new server as there was no requirement
for it. However, we run into a single user who wants to have all of his
previous backups moved to the new server, even though most are no longer
usable (we are talking about old OS2 systems, etcevery PC he has ever
used in the last 20 years). Since this user is our 2nd line manager, we have
no choice to try and figure something out.

The main problem is that the two servers are not compatible. The old server
can only talk to 3590 tape drives, whose tapes are not usable in the new
3592s. So, I can't just export the data to tape and then import into the
new server. (Ah if only life were that easy!).

On a hunch, I've tried creating a server connection between old and new
TSM server. Then, I exported a filespace to a virtual volume
(devclass=server) on the new server. It sits on a 3592 tape right now.
However, the new server will not allow me to import this tape, as it belongs
to a pool and it thinks it is in use.

Is there any way to make this work? I'm at a loss for ideas at this point.
I could create a virtual volume on disk and move the old filespaces to it,
but then I'll have to keep the old server running "forever" or at least until
it will run no longer.

Anyone have any ideas?

It goes back at least this far.

we ordered the oe client against our vm adsm server way back in the 90's. It
was not too hard to get the bits as we could order the feature code for a 3480
cart.
Since that time we moved to an windows tsm server and it does not have feature
codes for 3480 carts.
All the other clients can be ftp'ed over the internet. But with the oe client
we could not do this.

When did ADSM (year? release?) first support USS? (And how does that

Also, have there been comments at the Symposium, SHARE, or other public

You can use a command like this to find out when the backup command is running.
Then run a query actl with a small delta of time less then the time reported

Re: z/os file system backup support

2008-02-29 Thread Len Boyle
Hello Norman and Richard,

My problem is not if the client is still supported. It is that we had ordered
the client license against a windows ADSM/TSM server. And the operating server
for the backups is running on windows. The question is do they still support
using a windows server.

In the past I would just go to the server ann letter and see if the client is
still listed as a feature code.
I have not yet found that information.

Thanks len

Re: Backing up PST files

2008-02-14 Thread Len Boyle
I believe there is a mistake here.

I believe that the cache is only used to cache the ccw's for blocks. The reason
for the 2gig limit was given a long time ago on this list by a TSM dev, they
use a windows api to map the file in virtual memory for i/o. The api they use
has the 2 gig limit.

We use the sub file feature for windows servers located in remote offices, and
it really does help. but it would be even better if it could handle file that
are greater than 2gig.

I suspect if they come up with a general dedup feature, that this would replace
the sub-file feature. And one would hope that it will do files of any size.

It will be interesting to see what it looks like.

I didn't realize the cache directory was limited in size and that it held
complete copies of files. Checking this, it seems you may be correct about
full copies of files being made in the cache directory. The size of the
cache directory is only 1GB according to the Users Guide, and that is what
the EditPreferences GUI restricts you to as well I don't understand
how subfile backup can work for files up to 2GB in size, if the
subfilecachesize is restricted to 1024 MB.

Bummer. Thanks Wanda.

Curtis,
3590 tapes are where IBM servo tracks were first invented
(unless it was 3570, I may be mistaken). 3592 and LTO are follow-on
technologies built from those first ones.
De-guassing shouldn't be the only way this could be done. It
ought to be possible to write multiple passes of bit-patterns to a tape,
making the old data unreadable.
If you look at the "tapeutil" utility IBM provides with the
atape drivers, it includes an erase function. It would be easy to write
a program to mount the tapes in a drive one at a time to erase them.
But I could not find any documentation online that really explained what
the erase function was doing, and if it was thorough enough to withstand
HIPAA requirements.

De-gaussing is the only practical way to erase a significant quantity of
tapes, and degaussing will render a number of modern tape formats
useless forever. One of them is LTO. Not sure about 3x9x. (It's
because, in addition to removing the data, degaussing also removes the
servo tracks on the tape, and the drive won't recognize the tape.)

My opinion: It's not worth the risk.

Re: TS3500/3584 Partitioning Options?

2007-11-01 Thread Len Boyle
Hello Nick,

I did not know that barcodes make the layout was any different than using the
web interface or the front panel.
I thought that both the tape drives and the slots each had to be one sequence
of drives or slots. And if you wanted to add or subtract, unless the change was
to the bordering virtual library, you had to move all the intermediate units
down or up.

But, if you purchase the ALMS feature for the library things become much
easier. The assignment is done via the web interface and you can assign tape
drives one by one to any virtual library, in any order.
Slots are not assigned by their physical location, but are just quotas. The
library can use any slot for any virtual library. Note ALMS is just a license
key, the code is already built in.

OK, I get to read about bar code labels and try to make this work for
us. It's nice that it's possible; if not so nice that the granularity on
how slots are assigned is a bit more coarse and that it'll be some work
putting labels and clips into place. Oh, well!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Tom.

Re: backup disk/backup tape

2007-10-31 Thread Len Boyle
Hello Tom

Interesting that the 3584 would load the tape in the gripper, you would think
that it would know what is in the I/O door.
I do not believe that we have seen this problem. We have seen tapes stuck in
the gripper, or gripper/hand hardware failures. But having a tape stuck in the
gripper did not stop the library as it has a second gripper.

What level of 3584 firmware are you using and do you have the ALMS feature.

- The ALMS feature is very nice, but most likely should have been included with
the base library. /*plug*/

- We did have a problem with an older level of firmware where the library would
move tapes to the I/O door.
The operators would open the I/O door and remove the tapes. Then the operators
would insert new tapes and close the door. If an inserted tape was removed in
the past with this procedure, it would think that the tape was a duplicate
because it did not register that the tapes had been removed from the I/O
station unless the I/O door was closed and the empty slots inventoried by the
library hand scanner.

This is something that they fixed.

What type of library?

We've had instances with a 3584 under TSM 5.3.2.0 where the library
would start a tape move to the I/O door and find the door full -- and
the gripper just sits there with a tape in it's mouth until we pulled
some tapes from the I/O door. And with the gripper occupied, no other
tape mounts/dismounts occur.

I did notice that there was a message in the log because the I/O door

Re: Backing up files with ilegal characters

2007-08-17 Thread Len Boyle
Hello Michael,

I should add the comment that I do not know the correct answer to this
question.

But given that. If I read the following url correctly The Linux TSM client does
not support unicode at this time. If the filenames are in unicode. If they are
just using chars code over 128 then the doc in the following url lets you know
how to support them.

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&q1=tsm+linux+unicode&uid=swg21249081&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&cc=us&lang=en

Somebody with better IBM reading skills may give you a better answer.

I suspect that using A NDMP backup of the netapp should support the Unicode
chars and handle the filenames.

Thanks for raising this topic!

I'm curious how one should go about filenames in more than one language?

I work for an academic institution in Israel and besides hebrew we
have here researchers, students and support personnel that speak all
kinds of languages: Russian, Arabic, German, Chinese, Japanese, you
name it..
Our Netapp system that I backup via NFS (on a Linux client) contains
UNIX home directories of all those fellows, locals and foreigners as
one. As you might expect I get tons of ANS4042E and ANS1228E errors
every night.
Frankly, I have no clue how to solve this problem. I've started
administering our Backup environment only recently and till now hadn't
had time to dig deeper into this problem. But as I saw somebody
raising this question here and now, I decided to step in.

Presently I deal with the problem in administrative, not technical
way: I simply warn users that if their data means anything to them, to
not give your files names in "barbarian" languages or I may not be
able to restore it. So far this approach "works" but I wouldn't call
it a good service.

If you have anything helpful on this matter I'd be happy to learn from you.

This post is a bit offtopic, but still I decided to send ti here
because it's probably one of the very few places where large amount
backup administrators that are invested in IBM equipment come
together.

My question is related to using old school tar with IBM LTO2 drives.

I was asked to archive a rather large directory (over 200GB) to tape
using tar and put it into vault for indefinite period of time.
My equipment is as following: Linux x64 (IBMtape driver), 3584 Libr
with IBM 3580 LTO2 FC-attached drives.

I've tried to load a tape into IBMtape0 drive using 3584 Library
Specialist WebGUI and IBMtapeutil
then I tried to write a small directory '/var/log' to the tape as following
tar cvpf /dev/IBMtape0 /var/log
and it seemed to work. I could also tar xvfp /dev/IBMtape0 and read
the resulting files.

However, tar'ing the actual target directory revealed that the data is
flowing at extremely low rates - less than 100kb/sec.

Any ideas?

Re: tape loss need help

2007-06-22 Thread Len Boyle
Please note that if you have an IBM 3584 library with more then one frame, to
have an inventory of the whole library using this method you would have to open
and close all the doors.

You can also start an phyiscal library scan using the library web interface.
Go to Library then frames. From that screen you can inventory one frame or all
the frames.

After that process you can run an audit library from the tsm server.
Then run commands to checkin libvol commands to checkin scratch and private
tapes

Audit Library on a 3584 does NOT scan the tape barcodes -- it gets the
library manager catalog that was created the last time the library
initialized, with current updates from tape movement. If you want a
re-scan you will need to re-initialize the library (pause it, then open
and close a door).

Today I moved my TSM server to a new server. Everything seemed to go
well, restored DB, brought back all drives and library, audit library
and my script showed tapes were available as scratch. Tonight after
things have kicked off I got a message no scratch tapes were available
to mount when this afternoon there were 85 after I got the system back
online. q libvol returns nothing private or scratch but q vol shows
tapes. Tonight I tan the 3584 audit library but was way to quick if you
ask me. I had decided to run it again and it looks like the devcnfg is
empty of tapes whereas the one earlier showed everything.

Now that nothing seems to be in the library according to TSM I'm at a
loss as to how to get things back when the audit library seemed to work,
but actually didn't. That think obviously isn't looking at barcodes or
it would have found everything in the library if it was truly scanning.
I'm pretty much dead in the water until I can get this fixed and would
sure appreciate some insight if anyone has a suggestion.

What is the best method to back-up and perform a reliable and successful Bare

Personally I view the need to do a BMR on a WinTel platform as an opportunity

We are not doing encryption with tape drives, but have been asking the

My understanding is that lto-3's do not do encryption, have you heard something
different.
The encryption of the lto-4's is listed on the web site www.lto.org.

http://www.lto.org/newsite/html/news_4_11_07.html

"For additional security, generation 4 supports 256-Bit AES-GCM encryption
capabilities at the tape drive level that are designed to enable the writing of
encrypted data to the LTO Ultrium tape cartridge, helping to protect the
storage and transport of sensitive information. "

I do not know how true it is, but I heard that the lto-4's might use the same
method's as the TS1120.

Hello Steve,

It would be nice if we had someone from IBM tape group that might shine some
light on the details of the product. As the TSM folks have been known to do for
TSM.

But our local IBM tape person says of the 3584 "Yes, if you have 2 robots and
one fails, the other robot takes over and does all the mounts until robot A is
repaired". And the 3584 does have dual grippers on the robot.

The 3584 does not keep track of the functional use of the tapes, but with ALMS
it does visualize the tape slot usage. That is the software is given a virtual
slot number and not the real slot.

We have both a 3494 and a 3584 in our dual-server TSM configuration, soon to be
4 servers.

Our 3494 is an HA config with dual grippers on each robot. For this reason,
all of our primary data is in the 3494, and the 3584 contains the copy, which
is SAN attached about 5 miles away. If our 4 server config uses a 3584 for
primary data, unlike the 3494, it will have single points of failure that the
3494 does not have.

To me, this is a step backwards. Is there an HA option for the TS3500 yet that
provides dual library managers and dual robotics along with a manual mode of
operation? I guess if it did it would be a scsi-3494, and the beginnings of an
acceptable replacement for a 3494 with HA frames.

I much perfer the 3494's categories to scsi elements. Sharing is simple vs.
partitioning.

I know that we really dont need ACSLS to have only TSM on the library, even

We are using two STK Libraries L700 attached to FC with IBM-LTO1
 and IBM-LTO2.
They are defined to TSM 5.3 Library Manager (Windows) and Library
 clients as scsi Libraries.

They are used from several library clients in Windows and Linux.
Both libraries are heavily used and we are running more and more in
error situations (errors like 3e24 in fsc log) where libraries and
drives are no longer usable and only a full power cycle of the
 library helps.

Is there some experience that STK ACSLS software will help to
 overcome this painfull errors ?

As TSM has its own driver we dont really need ACSLS, but perhaps we
 get better reliability.

 Any expertise ?

 Thank you.

I was having the problem yesterday, and rebooted the TSM server. It came
back up, and I was able to do a Backup DB at that time, and it also mounted a
few scratch tapes in our primary tape pool. It added the scratch tapes to the
tape pool with no problem. Then about an hour later (after I had gone to bed)
it started getting the same problem. It says I don't have scratch tapes, but I

Hello, Angus -

If the file existence resulted from a wholly fresh install of 5.3,
and then boosting of the whole to 5.3.3, then the file should be
compatible with the current server. What I suspect is that the
install was performed over the trial version, somehow causing the
original file to be left in place, and that PTF maintenance carried
no replacement for that file. Whereas this is not a problem that
other 5.3 customers have reported, I have to believe that your
circumstances are unique by virtue of pre-existence of the trial
software. (Indeed, it may be that module which stops usage at the
end of the trial period. :-) You may be able to physically extract
that module from the installation CD, or some kind 5.3.3 Windows
customer may send you a copy, or you may have to reinstall (this time
wiping out executables from the server directory).

Hi Angus !

You'll probably get somehow disapointed, but there's no way to do what
you're asking !
TSM wants a new tape for each DB backup, and the only way to spare your
precious scratch volumes would be to use some form of disk storage, thru
the mean of a sequential-on-disk device class ...

You can use the delete volhist command to move your older db backup tapes to

 Hello Zoltan,

I suspect that the TSM folks have not finished testing zfs, there may be
boundary conditions that might have problems.

One feature that you most likely are not using, and I suspect will not work, is
to try backing up files with the new acl's (the same as nfs version 4) and see
if they are backed up and can be restored).

The client is 5.3.3.0 and I have suggested to the owner of the system to
update to 5.3.4.4.

Searched on IBM result in nothing but references to zFS on USS/Unix.

Manually backing up the ZFS filesystem seems to work.

Re: Making TSM twin-center compliant

2006-09-01 Thread Len Boyle
Hello Eric,

You will only require scratch tapes in the primary pool or that TSM can move
into the primary pool to do backups. TSM really does not think of working with
tape-sets, it thinks of working with data. If all your primary storage media is
wiped out and you have your copypool data. Then all new backup data can go to
new media. The new copypool data can append to the old copypool media and new
media.

You can recreate the primary pool media from the copypool media as a background
task. But it is not required for your operations. It is just required to enable
you to handle a second disaster.

Several sites have posted on this list, that they make two copies of the
primary storage pool data, To product against the loss of the primary and copy
storage pools.

Hi Allen!
Thank you very much for your reaction!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, you cannot backup to a
copypool. Am I wrong here?
I cannot wait for the restore storagepool to finish... This will take
days and I will have to be able to make client backups immediately.
If I was able to convert a copypool into a primary pool, I would be able
to backup clients right away. Ok, I would loose my copypool, but in case
of a disaster I can live with that for several days. In the meantime I
can have my vendor bring in (rental) stuff to rebuild the copypool.

Sure it does. In fact, you can do exactly as you describe; biggest
impact will be that the copy stgpools are usually (very) poorly
optimized for client restore.

Think of it carefully: Two TSM servers: PRIM, and COPY; COPY is housing
the offsites.

You lose PRIM, but, since you're good at these things you have the
database backed up offsite. You restore the PRIM database on hardware
at the remote site.

Immediately at that point, you have access to the data in the copy
pools, and more importantly, you have the -database- that tells you what
you have and don't have.

The next incremental will only copy the data you didn't have as of the
database backup which you used to do the restore.

So, between the time you get PRIM restored at the remote site, and the
time when the first of your clients have gotten their acts together, you
can be RESTORE STGpool ing as fast as your little tape drives can
scurry; as you make progress there (according to your previously
determined list of priorities...) your replacement PRIM becomes better
and better suited to serve the client restores.

>From another perspective: Why "promote" a copystgpool to PRIMARY status?
You'll just need to re-organize the new PRIMARY pool and then make a
copy pool. Less work to take the well-organized (for a copy
stgpool) existing copystgpool and make a new PRIMARY.

Re: Reuse node name

2006-08-26 Thread Len Boyle
Hello Keith,

You can use the TSM server "rename filespace" command to rename the data for
the existing Windows 2000 server. If you rename them to patterns that will
never exist on the new server the future backups will not change them. But the
data will be available from the new cliet server for restores.
At the end of the time period that you wish to keep the data, you can use the
TSM "delete filespace" command to remove the data from the TSM server. If you
are a belt and suspenders kind of person, you can create an export or backupset
to save the data before deleting.

I'm wondering what problems might occur when we start backing up
files from the new client, for instance since the file systems on the
old and new servers will be somewhat different.

Would the best way to avoid problems be to do a RENAME NODE of the
old client? Then, register the new server with the old name and TSM
won't have any records associated with that name to 'confuse' it.

If there is a simpler way, or if no intervention is required, I would
be glad to know that.

Our TSM servers are at version 5.3.0.2.

The path definition is the only TSM reference I could find that has a
library status: ONLINE=YES or NO. Example:

ANS8000I Server command: 'q path'

  Source Name: TSM_WAYNE_LM
  Source Type: SERVER
 Destination Name: WATL26
 Destination Type: LIBRARY

I'm not sure if TSM will set it off line if there is a problem. Another
approach is to use the lbtest utility that comes with TSM, but I don't know
if I'd want to be firing that up automatically it could interfere with
TSM activities.

BTW, we also have an L700. Ours is attached to an HP rp7410, running HP-UX

We have a TSM server (5.2.2) running on a Solaris box with a SCSI
attached STK L700 tape library. TSM interfaces directly with the tape
library. Does anyone have any relatively simple method to detect whether
the tape library becomes unavailable? I was thinking of enabling some
events, have them directed to a log file & have a monitoring tool watch
for them, but it seems like it would be difficult to identify all of
them. Is there some simply way to achieve this? Perhaps "query drive" or
something on a regular basis would generate a particular error if the
library was down. I suppose a script could just see if "q drive" returns
valid response within some timeframe. Any thoughts or experience doing
this?

Howdy, all.

We've periodically talked about MVS backups, and how they just don't
mesh well with TSM's filesystem-oriented attitude.

Well, I've stumbled on something in the process of pursuing a
tape-abatement project which shows early signs of being a nice back
door into TSM treatment of MVS backups; I wanted to wave it around
here, and get a sense of whether anyone else had experimented with
it.

There's a company called 'bus-tech' which sells a gadget that talks
ESCON or FICON out one end, and FC-AL or SCSI out the other end. It
pretends to be a flock of 3480s and 3490s to the mainframe, and writes
the tape images onto a normal EXT3 filesystem.

Here's the good part: Installing a TSM client on the appliance box
(SUSE) is a supported config. So if you can keep enough disk around
for the backups you want to store, you can then do an incr of them,
and treat the resulting data stream as you would any other TSM data
stream.

This could be the solution to the "Make the MVS data into a by-god
bitstream, PLEASE!" problem.

We're at the early sales stage of this investigation, so for all I
know the ground could be littered with deal-breakers. but the sales
engineer I chatted with said they had several other installations
using TSM on the appliance. I though there was a good chance one of
those was listening here, and might give an opinion.

Anyone?

Re: Backing Up CIFS Share on Netapp

The cifs share is mapped/mounted to your userid's session, not to all sessions
on the box.

I am not up onto all the in and outs of all the possible ways to do this. But
you have to map the network share in such a way, that the session which is the
tsm scheduler service sees the share.

I have not tested this, but I believe that you could have a pre-backup command
script which issues the net use command to mount the share.

Also I have been told that on netapp site, they have a tech note that gives a
procedure that could be run to mount shares before the normall services are

Would this be a good request for a design change to the TSM dev group. That is
an client option to not send any files over a configured size. Then the disk
and tape stg pools, would not require max size settings for this purpose. Of
course there then should be a special client message that the file was skipped
due to size limit issues. If the TSM folks ever increase the subfile support to
include files greater then 2gig, maybe the option should have two sizes, one for
a subfile and one otherwise.

I'm looking for a strategy to attack a strange problem of stuck files
and failing migration.

In one heirarchy, I have a file size limit of 10g for the disk storage
pool, and also a limit of 10g for the tape pool it migrates to. The idea
is to prevent a client backup session from ever mounting a tape
directly, which is very inefficient.

We are using client compression.

There exists a client somewhere, who has a 9.99gb file that is of a type
that is already compressed (a jpeg photo, or a zip file, for instance).
The server compares its 9.99gb size to the 10gb limit, and says "OK,
back it up", and it comes down the wire into the disk storage pool.
However, when it arrives, it has grown by being recompressed, so that
now it is larger than 10gb.

Now it's stuck in the disk stgpool, and cannot be migrated to tape.
Migration processes repeatedly fail and are restarted. Things grind to a
halt.

This has now happened twice. My only fix is to temporarily raise the
tape pool's limit to get the stuck file migrated. However, this could
allow a client backup session to mount a tape.

Anybody got any better ideas?

the problem is that if the backup is working on a 2 or 7 gig file that work is
rolled back.

Thanks again len

Hi Len,

Some nifty ideas, but non-trivial to implement. And I cannot make any kind
of commitments in regard to adding new functionality. You (and others
interested in such a thing) should consider opening a requirement for this
type of functionality. If the demand is sufficiently high, that would
weigh in favor of such a feature. But at this time, I do not see it on the
horizon. (This is just my take.)

Re: weird request for schedule

2006-06-01 Thread Len Boyle
Hello Joe,

We have the same problem, just with a larger window. I do not know of a good
solution from tsm, but if you hear of anything we would like to hear of it. We
do not need for the backup to stop, but just to have almost no effect on a wan
link during the day.

Andy I assume that you are the best person to answer this question.

Would it be possible to have an tsm server command that could do one of the
following. This command could then be issued by hand, or via an scheduler.

- Put the backup session to sleep and later with a different command wake up.

- Put a governor on the data transfer rate of the client with a command from
the tsm server. Either a fixed rate, such as 16kps or a relative rate based on
the link speed and usage.

- A interface to work with the networking gear and qos that could keep the tsm
traffic to an background priority level.

Thanks much len

Hello,

I have a customer who wants to run backup only during specific time
window; from 10pm to 4am.

That means when backup starts at 10pm, and runs until 4am, and even if
at 4am there are more files to be backed up, he wants backup to stop and
to be rescheduled for next backup cycle.

Any ideas appreciated.

Hello Gary,

Are your filespaces for the clients set for Unicode? On the server use the
query filespace command to check it out. If the filespace is not enabled for
Unicode then you can not store those characters. Note that if they are not and
you change the filespace to be Unicode enabled, it will require a fresh full
backup of the filespace. And you should also be on a late model of the client
code, as there were problems with the early releases of the Unicode support.

Re: 3584 checkin/checkout

2006-05-07 Thread Len Boyle
Hello Geoffrey,

If you purchase a feature call ALMS for the 3584 you get something called VIO,
Virtual i/o station.
With this feature as the operator puts carts into the i/o station the library
moves the carts two at a time into slots in the library. It assigns the tape
carts to the virtual libraries based on bar code prefix rules.
This is up to 255 carts per virtual library. Or at least my reading of the doc
says up to 255 per virtual library. I have not tested to make sure that it is
255 per virtual library and not the sum for all virtual libraries. The
application when it asks for the tapes from the i/o station the tapes are moved
from the virtual i/o station to the virtual library. This is only a paper
transaction as the tape are already in slots, unless the count exceed the max
carts in the vio. Then the real i/o station gets in the action.

The same process happens on checkout. The first tapes checked out are moved to
the real i/o station, after the i/o station fills the tapes are just moved to
vio status. When the operator empties an i/o station and closes the door, the
library moves up to an i/o station worth two at a time to the real i/o station.

I believe that IBM is trying to slowly move features of the 3494 to the 3584. I
suspect, but do not know that not all features will move, and there may be new
features.

I am thinking of asking for one new feature. With the existing web interface to
the 3584, one can see which volsers are in the real i/o station (really two i/o
stations in our box), but one can not see what is in the virtual i/o station. I
think that they should add this.

I am thinking that they should add an otherwise rules for the bar code rules.
At this time if the library can not assign a tape to a virtual library based on
the bar code. It allows any virtual library to pull it. This can happen if one
places a good barcoded tape in the i/o station with no matching barcode rule,
or if the library for any reason can not read the barcode correctly. I would
like some feature where the tape is kept in the i/o station until someone does
something with it. Or may assign it to a dummy virtual library, which could be
site defined. Maybe an snmp trap to wave a flag that there is a problem.

I'm wondering if I'm missing anything in our setup of the 3584 as it relates
to incoming and outgoing tapes. Currently the mainframe sends alerts to the
operators when the I/O port is full on the 3494 and needs emptying. Once
empty the checkout of tapes can continues. I was wondering how others manage
that on a 3584. Is there a way to send alerts when the port is full? I'd
hate to come in and find all the tapes were not ejected because the job
could not continue.

Second question relates to checking in tapes. On the 3494 you can insert
tapes to the I/O port and it automatically empties it and put tapes into
empty slots. I don't see this available with a 3584, but easily could have
missed it, so I'm wondering if there is a way to change a setting on the
library or automate this.

The only role for mvs that tsm can play, at least to my limited knowledge, is
to back up the unix oe file system. And the tsm server does not have to be on

Greetings, all.

I've gotten a request to update my opinions on ways that TSM can help the
mainframe do backups. What I'm recalling from previous discussions we've had
here is that the MVS filesystem structure, and the files theron, are
sufficiently different from the heirarchical structures of byte streams we're
accustomed to, that much of TSM is inapplicable to MVS data.

So, for those of you in a mixed-mode shop, is TSM anywhere in the backup
picture for your mainframe data? How are you doing offsites for the mainframe?
Is it a VTS thing, or are there other methods you prefer?

Re: ? On LTO3 cleaning tapes for a 3584

2006-04-10 Thread Len Boyle
Aaron,

If you are using library controlled cleaning then you do not need a cleaning
tape assigned to each logical library. As we are using the ALMS option we are
using library cleaning. We also are using netapp ndmp backups and that also
calls for library controlled cleaning.

Ours is CLNI14L1, could be a left over hmmm...

But that leads me to ask do I need a cleaning tape assigned to each logical
library?

Our universal tapes are labled CLNUxxCU, and we use TSM-based cleaning
(not automatic 3584 cleaning, we've found that it's unreliable at keeping
count of uses)

We tested it out in our environment, and did not find the same
problem--all tapes were scanned appropriately.

I guess our barcode scanner is right-side-up.

Re: Update - Tape problem after moving TSM to new server

Hello Roger

I have seen it happen. We have collocate turned on for the tape storage pools.
We had several clients that had very little in the way of changing data, with
this usage pattern, we can see a filling tape that is mostly expired holes and
it will reclaim. It does not happen very offen, but it does happen.

I have never seen reclamation take a Filling volume. I thought the Big
Idea ever since the product was called WDSF was to fill up the Filling
volumes until they are Full, let expiration gradually eat holes in them,
and then reclaim them. What's the point in reclaiming a tape that isn't
full yet? Even with collocation, I don't get it. If it isn't full yet,
the only thing you should be doing to it is writing more data to it.
