Re: HSM on AIX not working as expected

Andrew,

What version of the HSM client are you running? Try invoking the dsmautomig
with the VERBOSE

dsmautomig -D -traceflags=service -tracefile=/tmp/autotrace /u/p

It may be sending files but reporting that error due to a previous APAR that
was released last year around this time!

I am new to HSM with TSM. I start dsmhsm, selected a filesystem to
manage, filled the filesystem with files, and tried to do a migrate. It
keeps telling me "ANS9094W dsmautomig: no candidates found in
filesystem". I set the high threshold to 30, low to 10, and the
premigration threshold to 80. I updated my policy to allow migration,
and set the storage pool. Any ideas? I have looked through the book
and don't see anything I missed. Thanks.

Physical space occupied
The amount of space used for physical files. A physical file is either a
single logical file, or an aggregate file composed of logical files.

An aggregate file may contain empty space that had been used by logical
files that are now expired or deleted. Therefore, the amount of space used
by physical files is equal to or greater than the space used by logical
files. The difference gives you a measure of how much unused space any
aggregate files may have. The unused space can be reclaimed in sequential
storage pools.

Hi, TSMers,

We are running TSM 4.2 on AIX4.3.3 and I have 2 questions that couldn't
find answers from books.

1. Now that I started to generate backupsets for several nodes, but I
couldn't tell which volumes belong to which node when 'q libvol'. The
server shows only 'backupset' and when 'q vol f=d', it doesn't
give any info about vol of backupset. I plan to take them to off-site,
but when it expires (30 days), how I do know which need to come back to
on-site? Any recommendation for managing volumes of backupsets?

2. Does TSM supports to generate backupset or client image backup on
DVD-ROM? My clients wouldn't fit on 1 or 2 regular CD-ROM.

Thanks for your expertise!!

Re: Scheduling both Client and Oracle Agent on same AIX Node

2002-08-29 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

Chris,

Actually it is recommended that you use a separate and unique node name for
TDP for Oracle on the same workstation and define a unique policy domain for
Oracle node names. The Oracle backups can then be bound to the default
management class within this domain. For example, your regular domain is
RS6K which you have with your policy sets corresponding to your OS data by
dept. or whatever company policies or procedures you have in place. The
domain for TDP for Oracle would be ORACLE6K where it would have its separate
policy along with management classes, copygroups, schedules, etc By the
way, the copy group of the management class to which Oracle backups are
bound must be set as follows, VERDELETED=0 and RETONLY=0.

Hope this sheds a little light on the situation!

Re: Policy suggestions for Exchange node post upgrade to 2.2.1 TD P

2002-08-29 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

Noah,

In the new upgrade to TDP for Exchange Version 2, the copy group parameters
can be set as desired to define the version limit and retention periods for
Exchange Server database
backup objects:

 Versions Data Exists
 Versions Data Deleted
 Retain Extra Versions
 Retain Only Version

According to the manual, incremental backups are always uniquely named. As a
result, incremental backups do not participate in expirations (due to
version limit) because there is never more than one version of an
incremental backup object. However, all backup objects for an Exchange
Server storage group are inactivated when a new full backup of that Exchange
Server storage group is performed. Therefore, the retention period set in
the Retain Only Version parameter controls the expiration of incremental
backup objects.

When setting the value of the Retain Only Version parameter for incremental
backups, the value must be (at a minimum) as long as the value set for the
full backup objects to which the incremental backups are associated. You can
use the same management class for incremental backups and the full backup
objects (that are retained the longest) to be sure an adequate value is
used.

Demetrius

Re: Processing of Hard & Soft links

2002-08-27 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

Murthy,

There are several client options that you can use which involves utilizing
links.

TSM History for links (UNIX Clients Manual)

TSM handles symbolic links differently than it does
regular files and directories. In some operations, such as a backup,
only the path information that the symbolic link contains is backed
up. In other operations, such as archive, the file to which the
symbolic link points is archived, but under the name of the symbolic
link.

For directories, most operations are affected by the setting of the
subdir option. If the subdir option is set to no , only the directory
and the files it contains are affected. If the subdir option is yes ,
TSM recursively processes all files and directories in the directory
tree.
Incremental backup
- When you run an incremental backup, TSM backs up
only the path information to a file or directory to which a
symbolic link points. The contents of the file or the contents
of files in the directory are not backed up.

Selective backup
- When you run a selective backup on a symbolic link that
points to a file, TSM backs up only the path information to
that file. The contents of the file are not backed up.

Restore
- When you restore a symbolic link that originally pointed
to a file, the symbolic link is restored, whether or not the file
it points to still exists. If you restore a symbolic link that
originally pointed to a directory:
¶Without the files in the directory (for example,
/home/gillis/symdir/), and the symbolic link does not
exist on your file system, nothing is returned.

Along with the files in the directory (for example,
/home/gillis/symdir/*), and the symbolic link does not
exist on your file system, TSM builds the directory on
your workstation and puts the files in that directory. If
the subdir option is set to yes , TSM recursively restores
all subdirectories of the directory.
¶And the symbolic link already exists on your
workstation, the result depends on how the
followsymbolic option is set; if it is set to:
Yes - The symbolic link is restored and overwrites
the directory on your workstation. If the
followsymbolic option is set to yes , a symbolic
link can be used as a virtual mount point.
No - TSM displays an error message. No is the
default.

The archsymlinkasfile option specifies whether TSM follows a symbolic link
and archives the file or directory it points to, or archives the symbolic
link only. Use this option with the archive command. (THIS IS THE DEFAULT IN
TSM 4.2 UNIX CLIENTS)

The followsymbolic option is used to restore to a symbolic link (that is a
virtual mount point) and is unrelated to the archsymlinkasfile option.

Hope this helps a bit!!!

SUbdir YES

I have selected the directory in the GUI for a Incremental(Complete)

It just takes backup of only the links.

How do i make the TSM client backup the directories the links point to.
Also is there a way i can stop the TSM client from backing up hardlinked

Help in understanding how Hard & Soft links are processed would be greatly

Re: DB2/6000 backup

2002-08-26 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

Ike,

One way to make sure the correct dsm.sys file is being used is to run the
command "db2set DSMI_DIR" to dump out what is in memory on that particular
server. Keep in mind when these variables are set in the db2profile, these
take precedence over settings in the .profile. If you have on a set of
variables in .profile and another one in db2profile, db2profile settings
will rule. When you dump variables using db2set, these will show .profile
settings but when any command is run db2profile settings will be picked up.

Hello all,

sorry if these question have been posted before. I have recently set
up a TSM server. The server and client code is at 4.2.1. I have the
clients backing up to the server and files going only to disk storage
pool only for the time being, until I get my tape drives. The problem
I am having is with my database backups. I set up the dbbackuptrigger
to backup the database at 75%. Now my problem, whenever I set logmode
to rollforward, TSM automatically wants to do the first dbBackup which I
assume would be a full backup. After the process gets kicked off, the
20 gig tape just gets spit out. Even when I set the logmode to normal
and try a manual "backup db devclass=8mmdb type=full scratch=yes". When
I run the command the tape reads, rewinds, and ejects without the
backup. This is very frustrating and is probably something very
obvious, but I can't figure it out. Can anyone tell me what I may be
doing wrong?

Re: USELARGEBUFFERS does what?

2002-04-11 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

Roy

This option increases communication and device I/O buffers. The
communication I/O buffer is used during data transfer with a client session,
such as a backup session. The disk I/O buffer is used when data is read from
or written to a disk storage pool. Reads and writes are quicker and server
resources are better utilized. By reducing CPU utilization, more clients can
concurrently be serviced, improving overall system performance.

Hope this helps...

DSMADMC -ID=x -PA=x -COMMA MACRO DD:D2works fine but
DSMADMC -ID=x -PA=x MACRO DD:D2 -COMMA does not!

Re: Rman/TSm

2002-03-28 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

Mark,

This is from the TDP for Oracle manual!

RMAN generates unique backup file names. Because all backup objects inserted
into the TSM backup storage pool have unique file names, they never expire
on the TSM server. As a result, TDP for Oracle requires these special TSM
policy domain settings:

Backup Copy Group Values TDP for Oracle provides a delete function to remove
unwanted backup objects from the TSM server. However, for the delete
function to work, the following backup copy group parameters must be set:

¶VERDELETED=0
¶RETONLY=0

Then, when TDP for Oracle marks a backup object inactive, that object is
deleted from the TSM server the next time expiration processing occurs. A
backup object is marked
inactive when you delete it through the TDP for Oracle interface.

Notes:
1. The TSM administrator must also register your node by specifying
BACKDELETE=YES in order for backup objects to be deleted.

I may be confused on this but if you are migrating data from disk to tape
then MAXPROC has nothing to do with it! You may be getting that confused
with the backup stgpool command which creates your DR copies to take off

Hello all,
We recently thought we would try to change which NIC one of our nodes' uses
to do backups.
>From what I'd been able to find on the adsm message boards out there, it
looked as if ADSM, when initially contacted by a node, traps the IP address
that the node uses and stores that information untill contacted by that node
on a different IP address.
So when we were finally able to we downed the primary NIC and restarted the
dsmc sched process . ( Thinking was that the client would contact adsm with
the desired IP address and that would then be trapped and everything would
be fine. )
But it did not work.
Does anyone have any ideas?!

Is it a raw device? Is there a stanza in /etc/filesystems? You may need to
back up the /dev/appl file space over which the logical volume is mounted
and perform an image incremental backup. Then back up the /dev/devlv1 raw
logical volume. Remember before doing an image backup on a device, any file
system on the device must be UNMOUNTED.

Command: tsm> backup image /dev/appl -mode=incremental

Command: tsm> backup image /dev/devlv1

If it is NOT a raw device then goto SMITTY and check the PERMISSIONS whether
it is READ/WRITE...

That's all the IDEAS I have ;-)

I think I know what is going on here, but I want to double check

I have a manual library, it is used as the migration point for a specific
disk pool. Basically the disk pool and drive are used for one specific
client that wants dedicated media.

Anyway, TSM wants a scratch volume, I figure, no problem, I throw in a
blank tape, run dsmlabel, label a tape, it reports success, so I shove the
tape back in the drive. It is still asking for SCRTCH R/W. In fact it has
been for the last 100 minutes.

I tried "Label libvolume 4mmlib1 ds3-02 OVERWRITE=Yes" and the console
tells me that the library has no available drives.

Mountlimit is set to DRIVES, maxscratch is like 500 or something.

"select count(*) as num_scratch_tapes from libvolumes where status
='Scratch' " returns 0

Do I need to kill the migration process, then use "Label Libvolume" by any
chance?

Thanks

Welcome Dan!

* Where can I find documentation pertaining to my version of ADSM server?
All I have right now is literally a big README file which seems more
geared toward listing changes or new features rather than describing
server functionality and options. Any PDF files? Web sites? Text files?

Links for pdf and html files are available from the TSM home page
for current TSM versions:
http://www.tivoli.com/products/index/storage_mgr/

But I don't think the 3.1 manuals are there any more.
For those, go to www.adsm.org, click DOCS.
There are links to the 3.1 manuals in HTML and PDF format.

* Where do I obtain latest ADSM and TSM server and client fixes? Is there
  a FTP or WWW site?

http://www.tivoli.com/products/index/storage_mgr/
Click on FIXES AND CLIENT CODE, it will take you direct to the FTP
site. But you won't find fixes for the 3.1 server; The upgrade from ADSM to
TSM is a chargeable upgrade, you will have to buy a TSM V4 license and
upgrade from the CD.

* Is there a way on Solaris boxes to adjust sliding windows? TCPWINDOW
doesn't
seem to work in dsm.sys on the Solaris-based clients.

Clueless. I'll pass.

* What's the appropriate way to exclude a directory and everything under it?
Currently, I have this in my inclexcl file:

EXCLUDE.DIR and EXCLUDE work differently.
Since /opt/foo is a directory, the syntax you have ( exclude.dir
/opt/foo ) is correct.

EXCLUDE.DIR tells TSM NOT TO EVEN LOOK inside /opt/foo.
EXCLUDE.DIR is processed first and overrides any INCLUDE/EXCLUDE
statements below it.
So in your case yes, everything after that is redundant.

There are cases where you want to do this instead:
exclude /opt/foo/.../*

(... matches 0-n subdirectories)
(* matches 0-n characters)

It excludes the same FILES, but TSM still traverses the directory.
TSM selects a candidate for backup, and matches it against the
EXCLUDE/INCLUDE statements from the bottom up. So if you did this:

exclude /opt/foo/.../*
include /opt/foo/too/.../*

TSM will search all the directories below foo, including too. Any
of the files in too will match the INCLUDE, which is processed first
(because- well, because in this case, it is last, and they are processed
bottom up. We never said this is easy..) and they will be backed up. Any
files not in too but in foo (or other subdirectories) will match the EXCLUDE
and NOT be backed up.

You can't INCLUDE a subdirectory like this, when the parent
directory has been exlcuded via EXCLUDE.DIR.

* Is it possible to rename the ADSM server's name? (Not machine hostname,
but its ADSM name) Or am I just out of luck short of a total reinstall?
I poked around with the online help for update and rename commands, and
didn't seem to see anything which makes me think I may be out of luck.

Not sure what you are after; enter this on an admin command line:
HELP SET SERVERNAME

* Is there any way to temporarily disable paging (ie, to continue)
within dsmadmc when wanting to gather data for easy copy-n-paste? At least
one command's output looks very poor when done in batch mode with stdout
  redirected to a file.

If you are using at least a 3.7 admin client (and maybe 3.1, but I
don't remember) you have these other options from an AIX prompt:

dsmadmc -id=blah -password=blahblah -commadelimited "q whatever"
dsmadmc -id=blah -password=blahblah -tabdelimited "q whatever"
dsmamdc -id=blah -password=blahblah -outfile=filename "q
whatever"

That gives you the output commadelimited, tabdelimited, or formatted
into a file.
One of those usually gives you something that is easier to grep, or
cut and paste.

Hope that gives you a kick start!

Here is my recent sched.log file showing almost 8 hours to process 279,057

I'm thinking that someone has some insight on how to "Optimize" a Windows

configuration due to a "time-out" condition.

Seems like you could use TSM event logging on the TSM server to send the
desired events to a FILETEXT receiver, and use Openview to monitor this
plain text file the way you're used to. There is information on this in
Chapter 20 of the Admin guide.

Alternatively, you could monitor the dsmsched.log (and similar log files
for the Oracle backups) on the clients.

Hi,

I'm a complete novice to TSM. We currently manage a large network of UNIX
servers (mixture of AIX, Solaris, HP-UX and Tru64) and have recently taken
over support of a small group of AIX servers (5 of them) that consist of
an
TSM Backup server and 4 clients. The machines run Oracle databases and so
have two types of backup, the standard backup and a backup of the oracle
datafiles using rman.
The majority of our other servers are backed up using Legato Networker and
so we use OpenViews ability to monitore plain text files to check the
status
of the backups (simply checking /nsr/logs/messages for Failed or
Succeeded).
I realise that things are not so simple with TSM. However, we would really
like a way of automatically checking the status of the backups and then
calling a script to raise OV alerts if a failure is detected.

An additional complication is that because of the network config between
ourselves and these new servers we cannot receive SNMP traps.

Does anyone have any experience doing this ? Given that my knowledge of
TSM
is extemely limited (I'm currently reading the TSM Concepts and
Implementation Redbooks) I realise that I may be approaching this from
completely the wrong direction but I'd appreciate any constructive advice.

many thanks

Hi,

we are using a 4.2.1 Client on a Machine running WinNT4 SP6a. The Client is
connected to an FC-Array containing approx. 1'000'000 files and 1'800'000
directories (growing). Since the TSM hangs the whole system when trying to
backup these files, I took a look on the memoy usage: the software uses 360
MB of RAM after running for 2m30sec and still shows zero inspected objects.
Do you have a clue how much RAM I need to successfully backup these files
and what values are there to tune the performance ?

I used the "memory efficient backup" switch, that changed nothing.
The machine is a P3-866, 512MB RAM.

According to IBM I need approx. 4GB of RAM to do this Backup ?!

Greetings and TIA

Sascha

Re: Urgent question: Version retention

2002-03-05 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

That is correct! In this case, TSM is not concerned about the contents of
the file, but the extension of the file since that was the only thing that
changed! It will appear that the .exe file did not exist because it
immediately expired on March 2/3 when expiration ran. Are you looking in the
actlog for when expiration ran on March 2nd/3rd? I'm not sure about the
other files on this server that didn't seem to expire?!

>From the server run the following command, by the way, this command is NOT
SUPPORTED, so take heed before you use it:

tsm> show version nodemane filespace

This command will show the version of every backup file in a filespace, the
mgmtclass used to back it up, and when it occurred.

You may have to do a q filespace to get the appropriate naming convention
that the show command is looking for.

Agreed, my concern is why the retain only did not kick in at the time the
files was renamed to .avb. Is tsm really not recognizing a change in the
file even though its' type changed? I have displayed active and inactive
versions for these files and it is as if the .exe version never existed. I
have also looked at the expire inventory and it shows only 1 file being
expired for the entire server. I know of at least 18 on this particular
server that are in the same situation. So it doesn't seem to have expired
the .exe version of the files.

Cory

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 03/05/02 10:47AM >>>
It seems to me that this was a very rare situation! As you stated, TSM would
not have changed the extension on the file from .exe to .avb, that was the
anti-virus software or virus itself. Since this file did not change in 33
days this was the only file, which was **ACTIVE** since Nov. 29th, 2001.
Thirty-three days passed by WITHOUT the file changing (Dec 31st, 2001).

So, if this file is changed any point after Dec 31st, it will become
INACTIVE & be flagged for expiration after the next incremental backup. If
expiration has already been run (typically it has if it runs daily) the now
INACTIVE copy hqb.exe will drop off and this file (corrupted) hqb.avb will
be ACTIVE for 33 days (beginning March 2nd,2002) until it is changed!

The only thing that could've gotten you out of this situation was a longer
"Retain Extra Versions"!

Only my thoughts!

We were hit by the klez virus over the weekend. In trying to restore some

way I have versioning set up (or a "feature" in tsm). We are running win/nt

The idea was to be able to keep up to the last 33 days of changes to any
given file. What happened is this - when our virus program detected the
virus it renamed the files from .exe to .avb. Tivoli, it appears, did not
make a distinction between the files and just backed up the new .avb file as
a newer version of the .exe file. Since the .exe had not been changed since
the end of November, the only good backup of that file was dropped because
it was over 33 days old. I believe that this is what is occurring because
when I look at the file details for these files (on the restore screen) I
see this:

Name Size Modified Created Backed up
hqd.avb98 kb 29-nov-01 02-mar-02 03-mar-02

Note that the create date is more than 3 months later than the modified

1. does this sound like a bug in tsm?

2. is it more likely a problem in the way the anti-virus software is
renaming the file?

3. Is there any was to tell tivoli to keep a certain minimum number of

The original file (.exe) is GONE after 33 days since it did not change and
was finally changed (.avb) on 3/2/02! 'Retain Only Versions' specifies how
many days TSM retains the ONLY backup version it has of a file when the
original file has been **DELETED** not changed from the workstation!

That's the problem, it does not show any inactive versions. The only
version, inactive or otherwise, are the renamed versions. This is why I
believe that tivoli is not recognizing a difference between the renamed file
(.avb) and the original file(.exe). If it saw the .exe version of the file
as missing from the client side it should mark it so, and keep the last
version of that file for 365 days. There doesn't seem to be any record at
all of the .exe version at all.

Cory

Cory,

I presume you are using your GUI client for the restore: you need to find

Subject: Urgent question: Version retention

We were hit by the klez virus over the weekend. In trying to restore some
files from pre infected state I found what appears to be a fatal flaw in the
way I have versioning set up (or a "feature" in tsm). We are running win/nt
4.0 sp6a and tsm 4.2.1 client, the server is on aix and also 4.2.1. These
are the parms I am using.

Versions Data Exists NOLIMIT
Versions Data Deleted 2
Retain Extra Versions 33
Retain Only Version 365
Copy Mode MODIFIED
Copy SerializationSHRSTATIC
Copy Frequency 0

Note that the create date is more than 3 months later than the modified
date. My questions are:

1. does this sound like a bug in tsm?

2. is it more likely a problem in the way the anti-virus software is
renaming the file?

3. Is there any was to tell tivoli to keep a certain minimum number of
versions, something along the lines of a RETAIN MINIMUM VERSIONS so that
both high and low water marks and be kept for any given copygroup?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

New Policy Domain vs. New Mgmtclass???

2002-03-01 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

Morning, *SMers!

These NT 4.0 TSM 4.1.2.20 nodes have been backing up for years to policy
domain WINNTADSM (generic-not describing the application installed on the
node but only the platform). Now we have a need to change the retention for
all nodes by APPLICATION (SQL,OnDemand, etc) that meet the companies
requirements.

a) Should I create a new policy domain factoring in future add-ons which
will meet this policies criteria?

b) Should I create a new mgmt class with the backup/archive copygroup
retentions and update the dsm.opt files with the new mgmtclass which will
rebind all files to them?

My concerns:
We use a naming convention for all nodes by application as such:

NTSQL001
NTSQL002
NTSQLxxx

Therefore, all NTSQL xxx nodes that are added in the future will be assigned
to this mgmtclass or policy domain. The reason I want to add a new policy
domain is because
the name of the policy domain will reflect what type of application is on
this node
and the way the data is retained. But, the downfall is having to remove the
nodes
which means deleting all filespaces and that may be a little dangerous!

Any hints, tips, concerns are appreciated!

2002-02-27 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

Joe,

If PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE is not specified in the
dsm.opt file, then the TSM password needs to be specified on the
tdpexcc command. To specify the password, use the
/tsmpassword parameter in the command file being run by the
scheduler (excincr.cmd). You can also specify the password on
the TDP for Exchange command line. For example:
tdpexcc query tsm /tsmnode=mars1 /tsmpassword=newpassword

Re: Question regarding including an excluded type of file.

2002-02-26 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

-Doug-

In your mgmtclass pstfiles, what is SERialization set to (Dynamic)? Seems to
me that
most of those files would be skipped by the server anyway because they will
be considered as open if the user forgot to close down Microsoft Outlook?
Realize that this can create fuzzy copies (not accurate) when you try to
restore it because it will not be usable depending on the application.

Also, have you tried:

?:\...\*.pst pstfiles

Subject: Question regarding including an excluded type of file.

We are also opening an issue Tivoli, but we seem to get faster and better
results from our comrades on the list server. This is our problem:

We are drowning in pst files, which are "changed" each time an individual
opens his e-mail. We have made a corporate decision to back these up once
each weekend, and exclude them the rest of the week. These are the steps
that we have taken:

1. On each NT server, we have excluded all files that end in "pst."
Exclude *:\...\*.pst

2. I created a new management class through the web interface, called
"pstfiles," with versions data deleted set to 4, and retain extra versions
set for 90 days. Even though the excluded files would normally be deleted,
this management class will keep 4 sets inactive.

3. I created two new schedules, one to run on Friday evening and one
Saturday evening, figuring that one will successfully back up the pst files.

THE PROBLEM is that I cannot successfully code the include statement on the
schedule through the web interface. My intent is to Include *:\...\*.pst
pstfiles . This should override the exclude statement in the dsm.opt file,
backup the pst files and associate them with the management class pstfiles.

On the Object line of the web interface, I have tried variations of the
following commands:

Include *:\...\*.pst pstfiles The word "include" was not needed.
*:\...\*.pst pstfiles TSM attempted to backup pst files, and a
separate filesystem
pstfiles.
'*:\...\*.pst pstfiles' TSM failed to associate pst files with the
management class.
"'*:\...\*.pst pstfiles'" The double quotes were replaced with
a square, I presume because
TSM did not recognize the symbol.

Does anyone have a recommendation as to how to best handle this?

Hello *sm-ers,

I'm the new TSM-administration in our organisation and I have a question
about how the last adminstrator set up the option 'Delay Period for Volume
Reuse'.
In our environment we have a diskpool. Every day we migrate the
back-up/archive data to a tapepool. We also have some administrative command
schedules. One schedule is a delete volhistory command, like 'del
volhistt=all todate=-30'. We also have a command 'del volhist t=dbb
todate=-7'. The option 'Delay Period for Volume Reuse' for our tapepool is
'0' (zero). After reading the manual I was wondering if the Delay Reuse
period has the right value in combination with delvolhist dbb. I guess it
had to be set to 7, because when you want to do a point-in-time restore of
the database, it is possible there is no data on the tapes left to restore,
in spite of the database is saying there should be data on that tape.

Am I right? Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for your information.

Brian.

George,

I was using the 4.2.1.0 NW client and the SMDR/TSA that came with SP3 for NW
5.1. After going to 4.2.1.24 client and TSA5up7, a lot of my TSM error
messages and performance problems went away. I am too scared of Beta files,
but I have about 40 NW 5.1 servers running it and no burps from these
SMDR/TSA files yet. Sugguest you try them out on a few non-critical systems
and then go roll them out.

Re: Tape Flow Chart Needed

2002-02-15 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

Hey, Phillip! That sounds like a pretty solid process to get a handle on
your
tapes before it gets URGENT (users needing restored dirs/files)!!! I may
have
to implement something like that in our environment when I have some extra
time!

Subject: Re: Tape Flow Chart Needed

This is not a flow chart but some things to do.

You can "query cont" to see if the tape has data on it. If it doesn't then
see if it is a DBbackup, look at volhistory.

If it does have data, then where is it? "Query libv libx volume" will show
if it is in a library. If yes, I then update vol xxx acc=reado and then do
a "move data" on it to clean it off. If this works, I decide to keep it or
scrap it. I usually scrap them after three problems.

If it is not in the library check "q drm" or "q volhistory" or "query media"
and try and decide what to do. If you can not find it anywhere and it has
data on it then you need to declare it destroyed and do a restore and hope
that all the copy tapes are good. You can use preview=yes to find which copy
tapes that you will need.

To try and catch this early I have scripts that do things. One reports all
tapes readonly and all tapes unavailable (both in library and out). Once a
week I audit a group of tapes in the library. I do the groups by the last
number in the label. Thus on this Wed I do all that end in 3 and next Wed I
do all that end in 4. In ten weeks I will have audited all my private data
tapes in the libraries and then start over again. These audits find bad
files as well as bad tapes. This way I am proactive and try and find them
before a client finds them during a restore and fails.

Hope this helps (this may not be the best but is how I am doing it),

Subject: Tape Flow Chart Needed

Hi All,

I am pretty new to TSM administration and I am still confused about finding
out a tape status. We have had some tapes that have caused I/O errors in our
library and tape drives. I know that some of these tapes were checked out
but do not know how to ensure that they don't contain any needed data
without being able to check them in due to I/O errors. I also have others
that are required for a backup of the tapepool to copypool process (see
below), this is my primary concern to get this resolved.
02/14/2002 08:00:08 ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN issued command: BACKUP
STGPOOL tapepool copypool
02/14/2002 08:00:08 ANR1229W Volume 387ACRL1 cannot be backed up - volume is
offline or access mode is "unavailable" or "destroyed". 02/14/2002 08:00:08
ANR1229W Volume 418ACRL1 cannot be backed up - volume is offline or access
mode is "unavailable" or "destroyed".
Is there any flow chart or any written process that will take me through
steps for a tape or volume at an unknown state to either destroyed and
replace or reentry if still good but was errored due to a hardware problem,
that includes moving or restoring data that was on that tape. Something
like:

1) q vol 387arcl1 f=d, is tape unavailable or destroyed?, yes goto line 3,
no exit
2) goto exit
3) update volume 387acrl1 access=reado
4) issue command ? ? ?, did system use tape?, yes goto line 2, no it marked
it as unavailable goto line 5
5) do something else
6) do something else
7) checkin libvol lto1 387acrl1, did tape checkin?,yes goto line 8, no
8) move data, did data move? yes goto line 9, no, ???
9) checkin libvol lto1 search=yes status=scratch checkl=barcode, did tape
check in corectly?,yes goto line 2, no failed to read barcode goto line ???,
no failed to checkin for other reason ??? go to line 10.
10) destroy or replace tape

This was purely on example, please don't be too hard on me :) This is one of
the hardest hurdles on trying to get a grasp on TSM, any help would be
greatly appreciated.

I have called Tivoli support and have usually received good help on this,
but the process takes so long and usually something happens in between steps
that takes precedence which takes me from the support call and the process
gets lost then I am at an unknown tape state again.

My server is Win2K TSM V. 4.1.30.

Thanks in advanced,
Mark Bertrand

I was wondering if I can upgrade an AIX client that is currently at TSM
4.1.2 directly to 4.2.1.23 by pulling the install images off of one of the
FTP sites OR do I first have to get the CD-ROM that contains the base code
4.2.0, install that, then install the maintenance 4.2.1, and finally
install the patch, 4.2.1.23? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Become tapes in status filling

2002-02-13 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

-Nazir-

You need to lower your reclamation threshold on your tape stgpool by typing
in the following command: tsm> update stgpool reclaim=50

This will free up fragmented space on all tape volumes in that stgpool based
on the % of reclaimable space on those volumes. This will make the space on
the tapes usable again by moving any remaining ACTIVE files from one volume
to another making the original volume available for REUSE!

Note: You must have at least two drives to accomplish this because it
requires simultaneous mounts of an input & output volume. If you do not have
at least two drives, then you will have to set up a reclaim stgpool on disk
(another target pool). See admin guide and reference for more info and
commands.

Re: ANS0299E when starting NT scheduler service

2002-02-07 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

It seems to me that you have the option MANAGEDServices set to
'managedservices schedule'
or 'managedservices schedule webclient' in your dsm.opt file. If you specify
the schedmode=prompt option, the server prompts the CAD when it is time to
run the schedule. The scheduler will connect and disconnect to the server
when the CAD is first started.

If you just want the server to contact the client as specified in SCHEDMode
PRompted only then either REMOVE the MANAGEDServices option or rem (comment
it out).

Re: Process for re-running failed of missed backups

2002-02-07 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

If you want something automated, then you may want to write a script that
would
issue a query event * * t=c to search for 'failed', 'severed', 'missed', &
'uncertain' scheduled client events.

After it identifies the problem clients, it immediately starts off
incremental backups from the command line for each node every 15,30,45 mins
(depending on the amount of time each node takes to backup & the # of
drives, & other processes running on the server at the time).

After the server has identified all clients that fit the above criteria, it
would then write the clients name, date, time, & status in a file
(unsuccessful.log) so you could track the failures for resolution purposes.

Unfortunately, we do not have a script like that here, but maybe this IDEA
would ignite you in the right direction!

Good Morning,

I am looking for some best practices from the list on how to handle
backups that have either failed or were missed during the night. We
currently
backup 1000 nodes to four TSM servers. Most mornings we have about 20-30
servers that have had a problem completing their backup for one reason or
another. We currently investigate why each failure occurred and then re-run
the
backup to capture changed data. It can get to be quite time consuming. I'm
wondering what other shops do to handle these situations? I am looking to
not
only reduce the number of failure we experience each night but to may
automate
the process of checking these backups and re-running them. Thanks in
advance.

Re: Cart Error Message

Well try the move drmedia to courier state and leave the volume offsite, if
you
want to reuse the physical tape, it would have to be relabled using the
overwrite option.

The only way to really clear the segment references is to apply the latest
level of
the server or audit your db which could be very extensive.

3995 C62 Installation on 7025-F80

2002-02-01 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

Good afternoon, SMers!

Has anyone ever installed a 3995 C62 Library Dataserver on a RS/6000
7025-F80? We have a 4-K adapter feature code 6206 PCI SCSI-2 Single Ended
Fast/Wide . Also, we are trying to figure out whether or not you have to
set the dip-switches located on the back of the 3995.

Any comments will be helpful...

Thanks,

I will try to help you! Post the contents of the following commands:

q vol volname f=d
q libv libname volname

Also, since it is not in the library... Have you tried to issue a checkout
command? What kind of tape library is it and how many drives do you have?
What has changed since it was last working? Is it a new install?

I'm have an AIX 4.3.3 with TSM 3.7.2 .

The following process is showing in progress and cannot be ended. The
actual volume is showing to be in a mountable state for vault but has
already been removed from the library. We are unable to use drive 1 (rmt0)

The volume has been removed from the library but still shows

I don't know what else to do.
I've tried cancelling the process, no luck. I tried to run an audit libr but
it won't run until this process ends.
What can I do? Can anyone help me? Any assistance will be greatly

Nazir

If you do a ADSM> q vol tape4 f=d

You will see that the Pct. Reclaimable Space: should be 69.9

The tape is still showing as full because it is ready to be reclaimed
and returned as a SCRATCH volume when ever you run reclamation with
a threshold of 69% or less.

Thanks,

OnDemand Upgrade WOES...

Good morning, SMers!

There seems to be some controversy over the compatibility between OnDemand,
DB2, & TSM! We are currently using OnDemand 2.2.1.8, DB2 6.1 and TSM
3.7.2.0.
We plan to upgrade to OnDemand 7.1, DB2 7.1 and at least TSM 4.1 in a couple
of
weeks!

I am getting mixed signals from IBM about DB2 7.1 being compatible with TSM
4.1/4.2?

Can anyone share any comments, ideas, concerns, etc...

Thanks in advance!

I have put a subdir in one of the /usr/bmc/lost+found directories in hopes

Re: Database Specs

What Performance Tuning Manual are you refering too?

I am not sure of the maximum number of volumes but you SHOULD define more
than one volume for the database, and put these volumes on separate disks
because it allows simultaneous access to different parts of the database.
Also, if you want to really use disk space efficiently, allocate a few large
disk volumes rather than many small disk volumes. You can avoid losing space
to the overhead processing that TSM does.

Demetrius

Re: Database Specs

2002-01-25 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

If you are going to increase the BUFPoolsize parameter make sure you do it
based on
the amount of System Memory (MB). 'An optimal setting for the database
buffer pool is one in which the cache hit percentage is greater than or
equal to 98%. If you have enough memory, increase in 1MB increments. A cache
hit percentage greater than 99% is an indication that the proper BUFPoolsize
has been reached. While increasing BUFPoolsize, care must be taken not to
cause paging in the virtual memory system. Monitor system memory usage to
check for any increased paging after the BUFPoolsize change. (Use the RESET
BUFP command to reset the cache hit statistics.)'

Re: Restoring to another client

2002-01-24 Thread Malbrough, Demetrius

Set Access

The set access command gives users at other nodes access to your backup
versions, archived copies, or backup images. You can give another user
access to a specific file or image, multiple files or images, or all files
or images in a directory. When you give access to another user, that user
can restore or retrieve your objects. Specify in the command whether you are
giving access to archives or backups.

Note:
You cannot give access to both archives and backups using a single command.
Syntax

>>-SET Access--+- Archive-+--+- filespec-+-- node--+---+>
   '- Backup--' '-image-fs--' '- user-'

>--+--+><
   | .--. |
   | V | |
   '--- options-+-'

Parameters

Archive
Permits access to archived files or images.

Backup
Permits access to backup versions of files or images.

filespec
Specifies the path, file, image, or directory to which your are giving
access to another node or user. Use wildcard characters to specify a group
of files or images, or all files and images in a directory; all objects in a
directory branch; or all objects in a drive. However, you cannot use a
wildcard to specify all drives. Use a single asterisk "*" for the file spec
to give access to all files or images owned by you and backed up on the
server. When the command set access backup "*" node is entered, no check is
made with the server; it is assumed you have at least one object backed up.
If you give access to a branch of the current working directory, you only
need to specify the branch. If you give access to objects that are not in a
branch of the current working directory, you must specify the drive and
directory. The file spec to which you gave access must have at least one
backup version or archive copy object (file or directory) on the server.

To give access to all objects below a certain level, use an asterisk,
directory delimiter, and an asterisk at the end of your file spec. For
example, to give access to all objects below home/test, use file spec
home/test/*/*.

To specify all files or images in a named directory, enter home/mine/proj1/*
on the command line. To specify all files or images in all directories off
of the root directory, enter /*/* on the command line. Enter /* on one set
access command and /*/* on another if you want another user to have complete
access to your file space. The first /* gives access to all subdirectories
and all files or images off of the root directory.

image-fs
The name of the image file system to be shared. This may be specified as an
asterisk (*) to allow access to all images owned by the user granting
access.

node
Specifies the client node of the user to whom you are giving access. Use
wildcards to give access to more than one node with similar node names. Use
an asterisk (*) to give access to all nodes.

user
This is an optional keyword command modifier that restricts access to the
user at the specified node.

options
See "Setting Common Options" for information about common options that you
can use with this command.
Examples

Task
Give the user at node2 authority to restore the budget file from the
/home/user directory.
Command: set access backup /home/user/budget node_2

Task
Give node3 authority to retrieve all files in the /home/devel/proja
directory whose file names end with .c.
Command: set access ret "/home/devel/proja/*.c" node_3 user_c

Task
Give node3 the authority to retrieve all files from the /home/devel/proja
directory.
Command: set ac archive /home/devel/proja/node_3

Task
Give all nodes whose names end with bldgb the authority to restore all
backup versions from directories with a file space name of project.
Command: set ac b {project} "*" "*bldgb"

Task
Give all users at all nodes access to all objects in the /acct/paid
directory and any subdirectories below it.
Command: set ac b "/acct/paid/*/*" "*"

Task
Give user serena at node_5 authority to restore all images of the file space
mounted on directory /home/devel/proja.
Command: set acc backup "home/devel/proja/*/*" node_5 serena

Return Codes:

Applicable Component Level/SU:

Error Description:
When using passwordaccess generate and the machine name, the

scheme can result in having 0 symbols. This means that the
password will appear to be corrupt in the tsm.pwd file.
User will be prompted for the password even if it was alreaady

the encrypted password cannot be read.

Local Fix:
Do not use the same nodename and password.

Should I upgrade the client to the next release 4.1.3 or should I go up
into the latest 4.2 client?

A Tivoli Storage Manager V4.2 client can perform backup, restore, archive,
and retrieve functions to a Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 server. Therefore,
it would be wise to go ahead and upgrade your client to the latest of
4.2.1.0 or even patch 4.2.1.23.

It is not recommended that you uninstall the client in the README.ftp file
but it wouldn't hurt!

Michael,

To the best of my knowledge, you MUST have a valid DB backup tape to
recover. AFAIK, it is not possible to read storagepool media without an
intact database.

If your DB is not intact, and your DB backup tapes are no good, I would
recommend that you call TSM support to see if they can help you.

Good luck!

Hello Malbourgh,
the server you have upgraded was TSM server or server where you have TSM
client with DB2 database?
Can you send the content of your dsm.sys (if you are using separate
dsm.sys for ba and api send both of them)?
I had the same problem and the solution was to use Passworddrir option in
dsm.sys because my ba client was using the same
password file as my api client (I used separate dsm.sys for ba and api and
I had the same server name in both of them).

By the way, what level is DB2? In older versions of DB2 was ADSM client
included and it is recomended not to use this client but latest
TSM api client. Check your paths to make sure you dont have mixed versions
of TSM and ADSM api clients.

Hope this helps

I am posting this for documentation purposes for any *SMers migrating from
AIX Server 4.1.2.0 to 4.2.1.0!

There is a problem with the LUM tools used by TSM for licensing:

If you are having a problem registering your license and you are getting the
message:

ANR2841W Server is NOT IN COMPLIANCE with license terms

Take the following steps:

1. Halt the TSM server

2. Change directories to /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin
cd /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin

3. Delete all of the license files.
rm *.lic

4. Move the nodelock file to the tmp directory.
mv nodelock /tmp/nodelock

5. Goto Smitty and remove the license certificate file
(tivoli.tsm.license.cert) & the license runtime file
(tivoli.tsm.license.rte).
smitty remove

Remove Installed Software

Type or select values in entry fields.
Press Enter AFTER making all desired changes.

Andy,

Per APAR IC31873, is it implying that for optimal performance the MAXIMUM
value of the TCPWindowsize should be 63 on Windows 98, Me, and NT 4.0? By
having the TCPWindowsize
at a value greater than 63, does it have a negative or positive affect on
the restore/ retrieve performance of the client?

Subject: TSM V4.2.1.20 Windows NT/2000/XP Client Flash

=
TSM V4.2.1.20 Windows NT/2000/XP Client Flash
=

TSM 4.2.1 was made generally available in September 2001, and we have many
customers running it successfully. However, in an effort to give our
customers
the latest in functional stability for Windows NT-based clients (Windows
NT 4.0,
Windows 2000, and Windows XP), we are recommending TSM 4.2.1.20 to those
who may
be affected by the issues described below or who are upgrading to TSM 4.2
for
the first time. TSM 4.2.1.20 supercedes both TSM 4.2.0 and TSM 4.2.1 on
Windows
NT/2000/XP and is our most current level of the TSM client for those
operating
systems.

This 4.2.1.20 Windows NT/2000/XP client patch has gone through some
function and
system testing. We support its use in a production environment. The
client
patch can be downloaded from
http://www.tivoli.com/support/storage_mgr/clients.html#clients.

The main problems addressed by the 4.2.1.20 client patch are:

IC31844 - Skipped files causes scheduled backups to be reported as
failed

Prior to 4.2.1.0, if a scheduled backup had files that were
skipped
but otherwise ran successfully, the scheduled event would
still be
reported as successful. This was the correct behavior. With
4.2.1.0, that same scheduled event with skipped files is
reported
as failed with a return code of 4. The fix in this patch
reinstates
the correct behavior, which is to report scheduled backups
that ran
successfully, except for skipped files, as successful.

   IC31873 - Poor backup performance

The backup performance of the 4.2.1.0 client is degraded due
to the
behavior of a particular system call added in 4.2.1.0. The
performance is better when client option TCPWINDOWSIZE 63
(instead
of the default 32) is used. However, the patch implements a
different system call to work around the problem and restore
the
 previous backup performance.

IC32163 - Named Streams restored incorrectly

NTFS file systems support multiple data streams in a file.
The part
of the file that you normally see via Windows Explorer or the
DIR
command is the unnamed (default) stream. However, some
applications
also write one or more named (secondary) streams to a file.
For
example, an application that creates bitmap images might
store the
main image in the file's default stream, and a "thumbnail"
image in
a named stream (that is part of the same file). APAR IC32163
concerns itself with named streams. Because named streams are
supported only on NTFS file systems, this APAR affects only
the
Windows NT-based platforms (NT 4.0, 2000, and XP). The
Windows
 9x-based family (98/Me) are unaffected.

Users running the "File Server for Macintosh" service are
potentially affected because Windows uses named streams to
represent the Macintosh data and resource forks.

Users who do not run the "File Server for Macintosh" service
are
also potentially affected, but to a lesser degree. Whether a
particular file has any named streams is dependent on the
application that uses the file. The typical NTFS file system
(without "File Server for Macintosh" running) has few, if any
files
 containing named streams.

There are two named streams issues addressed in this APAR:

 1) Named streams are not restored correctly by the 4.2 client
if
the backup version was created by a 4.1 (or older) client.
The
files will appear to restore correctly (no TSM warning or
error
messages), and indeed the default stream (the "main" part
of the
file) is restored correctly. However the named streams are
not
restored correctly. This problem affects ALL named streams
backed up with a 4.1 (or older) client and restored by a
V4.2
client.

This problem is fixed in this patch, so named streams
backed up
by a client older than 4.2 can be correctly restored by
the 4.2
client (with

Agreed. I am working on developing a redbook with guidelines for
understanding
and deploying Journal Based Backup.

This is an ideal environment for Journal Based Backup.

The primary performance benefit over normal incremental backup is
eliminating
scanning the entire local file system.

Keep in mind that a normal full incremental must be done on a file system
being
journaled to create a valid journal before journal based backup will work.

If the Journal Service is stopped all journals are deleted and obviously
will
no longer valid when the service is restarted so a full incremental must be
performed (and completed) before journal based backup will work again.

The version 5.1 journal service has a setting to override this behavior,
that
is to allow a journal to remain valid when the file system goes offline or
the
service is stopped and restarted.

>>> It seems as if the Journal Engine Service is not working properly! I
still

the

I think what is happening is that a full incremental is being forced
because the
journal was deleted when you stopped the service.

Note that you can override journal based backup when a valid journal exists
by using
the -nojournal option in the backup client..

>>> Also, if anyone can explain this message it would be greatly
appreciated?
>>>
>>> "psFsMonitorThread(tid 1044): Object 'C:\WINNT\Temp\TMP5.tmp' was

>>> after notification."

This message is erroneous and shouldn't be logged as an error (this is
fixed in the version
5.1 journal service).

Basically what it means is that a change notification was generated for an
object which was
deleted before journal service could process the notification.

I mistakenly thought this to be an unusual type of error condition but it
turns out to happen
quite frequently when applications create and delete temporary files in a
very short time span.

Subject: Multiple Policy domains on TSM Server 4.7.3 running on Windows
NT 4.0 platform

Hi All !!!

What the goal here is, to allow only selecttive administrators on a TSM
server from being able to restore data from secure nodes. This I believe
is currently not possible with TSM, since any administrator can chnage the
node password for any given node and restore the data from any node, in a
single policy domian.

This leads to my following questions for a multi policy domain:

- When we create multiple policy domains, can both of them be active at the
same time?
- Can we restrict users/ operators / administrators from one policy domain
administering the other domain? We still want the other administrators to
be able to check in and checl\k out volumes, and do other routine work for
the secure nodes as well, but not be able to change the password for the
nodes in that domain or do restores.
- Also, is there a need for a super administrator for the TSM server who
has access to both the domains and grants privileges to the administrators
in the different policy domains?
- Any good brief reading material to find out about this on the web?
- Any dos and dont's or watchouts, going from a single policy to a multiple
policy domain?

Any suggestions would behelpful.

One more question off the topic, what is the link where we can go and
register the email addresses to subscribe to this ADSM list server?

with about 2,200 (less than 1%) changing on a daily basis.

If the amount of daily change activity is less than 5% is it still
beneficial to use Journal Backups?

When I first upgraded to 4.2.1.15 from 4.1.2.0, I decided not to perform a
Journal backup on this particular client, so I DISABLED the service. On
Tuesday, I started the Journal Service so it could begin its journaling
process and log any changed objects or its attributes in the journal
database. The backup still took 9.5 hours to complete with the same
behavior as without Journaling. So, I continued to let it run the next night
and it still took 9.5 hours as well.

It seems as if the Journal Engine Service is not working properly! I still
see sessions terminating due to the extensive processing/querying that the
producer thread does while in an idlewait status.

Subject: Migration/storage pool backup ?'s

Hello,

I am experiencing some problems with migration and storage pool backups. My
situation is that I have a small disk storage pool that is primarily used
for oracle archive logs that archive at any time during the day. During the
hours of 6-12, we perform offsite copies of the tape and disk storage pools.
During this time, no tape drives are available for client backups so I need
to make sure that the disk storage pool is completely migrated to tape prior
to starting the offsite copies. Here is what I do:

At 5:00 -

I perform an "upd stg archivepool hi=0" to force migrate the storage pool to
tape.

At 6:00 -

upd stg archivepool hi=100 (stop migration)
backup stg pools offsitepools (for all storage pools)
upd stg archivepool hi=75 (set pool to migrate at 75%)

What is happening, is the migration at 5:00 does not stop at 6:00, thus I
have backup storage pools and migration running at the same time.

How can I migrate the disk storage pool, make it wait until complete, then
start the backup of storage pools?

Thanks for the help,

Jonathan
