Re: Delayed Schedule Start

2002-07-11 Thread Martin, Jon R.

Only this schedule has a priority of 'one', it is for testing the backup of
one specific filesystem. There were no other events scheduled to run at
this time, however, since the backup of this filesystem takes 14 hours (4.2
million objects/ 108 Gb) I assigned it higher priority over events occurring
later in the day.

Randomization is probably the answer. I did not realize that randomization
would be used when no other sessions/processes were active on the TSM Server
and/or client.

Thanks,
Jon Martin

Perhaps a combination of the randomization, the backup window or the
available sessions at the time of backup? If there are no sessions
available, the backup will start anytime a session is available within that
schedule window.

What's your Schedule Randomization percentage and what is the backup
window for this schedule? If I recall correctly randomization is for
every schedule even if it only runs on one node. And the ramdomization
starts from the moment the nodes connect to the server not from the start
of the window.

backup window is 4 hours.
schedule starts at 1 AM
randomization is set to 25%
node connects at 230 AM
schedules will start between 230 and 330 AM.

Could this be it?

Hello All,

I am hoping someone can shed some light on why I cannot change the status of
one of my volumes from priv to scr. My update command returns 'updated' but
my query shows its still priv. (See below). Why is this happening and how
can I change it? I am having this problem on more than one tape. Also, when
I do a 'q libv' it shows up as scratch, but when I do a q vol I don't see it
at all. What's up with that?

2002-05-03 Thread Martin, Jon R.

George,

Did a backup run between the time that the filesystem was removed
and the new file system created? I believe that when /inbound/site was
removed the data was lost. If a backup was run TSM would mark the data as
inactive. Now when your are try to restore to the new filesystem you should
be looking at inactive file not only inactive. Just a thought.

Good morning everyone

I can across an problem with no idea of a resolution.
AIX TSM server 4.2

I had a filesystem called say /inbound/site
now they removed the filesystem but still needed the pathso
they have a filesystem called /inbound and created a sub directory called
site

When you try to do a restore via the command line it only finds the
filesystem data not the directory data
If I try to restore via X window or web I have to go through the filesystem
/inbound and to the subdirectory site

How can I get the data off the filesystem /inbound/site and in the directory
/inbound/site
I can'd restore the data and then back it up again...too much data and not
enough space on the server

Sorry to hit everyone in the morning with this...but I was trying to figure
this out all last night w/ no success

mksysb or sysback to library volume

2002-05-03 Thread Martin, Jon R.

Hello,

Possibly I am imaging this whole thing. However, I believe it is
possible to backup the AIX operating system directly to a tape in the
Library, not through TSM necessarily.

What AIX device would I choose to backup to?

rmt1 IBM Magstar MP 3570 Library Tape Drive
rmt2 IBM Magstar MP 3570 Library Tape Drive
rmt3 IBM Magstar MP 3570 Library Tape Drive

What if anything needs to be done to specify the tape cartridge(s) that will
be used?

If anyone is doing this, a little insight to get me started would be greatly
appreciated.

Ya I thought about that too but there is a potential media management
nightmare lurking here.. suppose you have a few of these critical clients
that you do this to. How often do you create backupsets? Daily? Are you then
going to ship a complete set of tapes offsite and bring the old ones onsite
daily (thus emulating having 1 copy of 'active' data offsite daily)? There
are potential costs lurking here in how often you have the offsite vault
bring tapes back I would guess..

Also you end up with 1 tape or set of tapes per server. So if you have an
LTO tape that holds 100GB native and your critical client only has 3GB of
OS data stored on it, your not using the total capacity of the tape. Though
you may or may not care that you're wasting space this way.. The number of
tapes you ultimately use for this system may be more then simply moving all
data offsite (if you're trying to save on the # of tapes you have to ship
offsite).

All in all it might be a solution though it's not very eloquent and whether
it does what you're ultimately trying to accomplish is questionable (i.e.
saving on # of tapes you have to ship offsite?)

Rob,

You can do a generate backupset for the critical clients that you want to
get
active file copies for. This will copy active copies of files in primary
storage pools. This backupset is self-describing, you can restore directly
to
the client whether or not the server is available, without having to
transfer
data across the network.

Here's an interesting one for us: periodically, a client will decide to
perform a full backup during a scheduled incremental, regardless of existing
file spaces or status of the client files or options in any way, shape or
form. Does anyone know of any setting or issue that would cause this to
happen? It has happened about three times on three different clients in the
last several months and the best we can come up with is a possible TSM
database corruption. Any idea's would be greatly appreciated, as always.

We're running TSM v4.1x on AIX v5.x with all flavors of Windows and AIX

Re: unix trigger for TSM Server processes?

Peter,

I think I remember seeing where someone scheduled a job on the
server to do this. The job would loop checking to see if a certain event
had completed. Once the observed event is complete, the server job can
perform the backup. Searching adsm.org might find more information.

What is the best way to have unix trigger a TSM backup storagepool process?
We need to start this process immediately upon completion of a client's DB2
backup. We can't very well schedule this, because the completion time of the
backup varies widely, from one backup to the next. We can afford to begin
the tape copy process neither too soon, nor too late.
One idea might be to have a DB2 script invoke unix to start something via
/usr/bin/dsmadmc -id=admin -pass=password, et cetera, but this would mean
hardcoding the password with the -pass= parameter, which would present a
security exposure.
Any suggestions on how we might accomplish this would be greatly appreciated
(both the client and server platforms are AIX 4.3.3; TSM is at V4 R2).

Hi, I was just wondering where you found the information stating that the
data was only protected on the way to the server, but not on the server.
Encryption is done by the client using an encrytion key that it create and
since the key is never passed from client to server, there is no way for the
server to de-crypt the data before storage.

Please let me know, as I would like to look at the documentation.

Please check the TSM Error Log for any additional
information

A year ago we were experiencing a similar problem on our AIX nodes
and applied 3.7.2.15 (IC26775), and that resolved the problem. I can not
find any similar patch for the Sun Solaris platform. The nodes we have this
problem with are all at 3.7.2.0 and Solaris 2.7 or 2.8. The temporary fix
is to kill and restart the 'dsmc sched' process.
Does anyone have information on correcting this problem, or
suggestions on what to check. I have looked at the available patches but
none mention this error.

Re: script to see if TSM Server is down

2002-03-15 Thread Martin, Jon R.

If you have packaged IBM solution NSM it comes with a script named isitup.
The script does advanced checking to see if the server is up.

Otherwise, here is something simple for Unix ksh.

#
dsmadmc -id=xxx -pass=xxx 'quit'

# Whether the server is up or down it will return you to the #prompt
# Now test the return code
if [ $? != 0 ]
then
mail -s TSM IS DOWN [EMAIL PROTECTED]
fi
#

Note the id and password don't need to be the administrator id. You could
use an id with not authority. It isn't foolproof but it solves the problem.

checkin volumes for import

2002-03-13 Thread Martin, Jon R.

Hello,

I am on TSM v3.7.2

I am using the following export data. EXPORT NODE domains=solaris
filedata=backupactive devclass=3570 scratch=yes
usedvolumelist=/tmp/solexport.out

My question is on checking the volumes in to restore this data at a later
date. Would I use checkin libvolume search=bulk status=private
checklabel=yes

Then I would issue the 'import node' command specifying the volumes in the
order they were used.

Does that sound correct?

Also, since the export contains data for 10 servers does the first volume
act as table of contents? If I do an import node for a specific node will
the server read only the necessary volumes, or will it need to read every
single volume to find files matching the node/filespace desciption I
requested?

Thanks,

Jon Martin

return export volume to scratch

2002-03-08 Thread Martin, Jon R.

Good Morning All,

I have a tape volume that was used to export a node. I would like
to check that volume back in as scratch. I'm having trouble finding the
answer.

Here is an excerpt from the actlog showing what I have tried.

ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN issued command: CHECKIN libvolume 3575lib
0ACFB3 status=scratch checklabel=yes
ANR8443E CHECKIN LIBVOLUME: Volume 0ACFB3 in library 3575LIB cannot be
assigned a status of SCRATCH.

ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN issued command: LABEL libvolume 3575lib
search=yes labelsource=barcode checkin=scratch
ANR8816E LABEL LIBVOLUME: Volume 0ACFB3 in library 3575LIB cannot be
labelled because it is currently defined in a storage pool or in the
volume history file.

ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN issued command: DELETE VOLUME 0ACFB3
discarddata=yes
ANR2401E DELETE VOLUME: Volume 0ACFB3 is not defined in a storage pool.

Any tips?

Thanks,
Jon Martin

Re: return export volume to scratch

2002-03-08 Thread Martin, Jon R.

Thanks to all for the replies,

The volhist information was the problem. Here is what I had to do

del volhist todate=+1 type=export

In this case the volume was automatically returned to scratch status
once it was removed from volhist.

Thanks Again,
Jon

Jon,

You can not check the volume back in as scratch until the information in
your volume history file has been deleted for that tape. Use the command

TSM h q volhist

to see more information on using the q volhist command. This can be used
to identify the tape and then once all the parameters are correct to only
bring back the tape in question, you can change the word query to delete
to remove the entry from the volume history file.

Once this has been done the tape can be checked back in as ascratch tape.

Re: AS/400 TSM

2002-03-06 Thread Martin, Jon R.

Henk,

This past summer we added 4 AS/400s to our TSM environment. We
are running TSM v 3.7.2 on AIX v4.3.3. Our Library is a SCSI connected
3575. There are redbooks out there with great information on setting up
your management class, and tips for setting up BRMS on the AS/400. We found
two limitations.

1 BRMS does all management and expiration of the files stored in TSM.

- For us this meant trusting the AS/400 administrators were properly
managing BRMS. If they were not it would have uncontrollable results on the
TSM server for us.

2 The backup times were extremely slow.

- I looked somewhat extensively but could not find any reasons for
this. The backups were done through Gigabit Ethernet. I found some
postings which indicating there were known performance problems, but nothing
to indicate a solution.

In the end we removed the AS/400's from our environment. Someday
when we upgrade and have a 3494 library we try to add the AS/400s to TSM
again, but this time backing up through Fibre.

Try this link for good information.

More than one storage pool backing up to a single copypool.

2002-02-19 Thread Martin, Jon R.

All,

Is it possible to have two storage pool's backup to the same copy
storage pool? I don't see anything in the manuals saying yes or no.

We currently have a 'TAPEPOOL' which is backed up to a 'COPYPOOL' .
Then the 'COPYPOOL' tapes are sent offsite. The original intention of our
TSM installation was for backup of 'server' data only. The 'TAPEPOOL' uses
collocation.

Recently a growing number of executives have asked to have their
desktops installed as TSM clients. My problem is that right now each of
these desktops will hog an entire volume because of the collocation.

What I would like to do is create a 'TAPEPOOL_PC' which has
collocation turned off and does a backup to the existing 'COPYPOOL'.

Thank You,

All,

I think Kelly brings up a good point that, most of us don't get to
practice disaster recovery very often. I know that there are plenty of
courses for TSM installation, configuration, and administration. Does
anyone know of available training with a strict focus on disaster recovery
in theory and in practice? Unfortunately, I don't have a development or

Procedure

I'll put in a plug for my friend Wanda Prather. In the adsm.org archives
you should find a very nice procedure developed by Wanda. Perhaps she'll
post it here once more for those of us who missed it.

In general, the method is to install a bare bones OS from the distribution
CDs, configure it, install the TSM client, configure it, and restore the
backup on top of the new installation. This is an easy procedure to follow.
I'd like to see a side-by-side runoff between this and the BMR product to
get an idea of the time difference.

OK, don't like this idea? How about using Ghost to periodically snap an
image of your OS (or perhaps have a generic one with TSM installed ready to
go). Lose the disk? Ghost the image and do a restore from TSM to bring the
image up-to-date.

As for restoring your TSM server. That is very easy if you have three
things: a database backup, the devconfig.out file and the volhist.out file.
From these three items, I can restore your TSM server in four hours of less
(very dependent on the size of the database: for very small databases,
you're probably looking at less than an hour, start to finish). The problem
with this is most of us never practice it. In my job I have the fortune of
getting to do this periodically (monthly) so I've gotten pretty confident so
to me it's easy. I recommend doing it the first time when you don't have
to. When you have to do it, nerves take over and the process is much
harder.

Tivoli used to provide Tivoli Data protection for workgroups (good for
 bare
metal recovery for NT, windows, from

there's a void here that Tivoli should fill, and fast! BARE METAL RECOVERY

Re: TSM Sendmail and AIX

2002-02-13 Thread Martin, Jon R.

James,

You can cheat if you like..

Send the vault information to your local corporate e-mail account.
Then if using Outlook you can set up an auto-forward rule.

Otherwise.. my sendmail knowledge is limited and rusty but...

The email they receive is probably coming from
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]'. You can look into using /etc/aliases or
editing the DM line in the /etc/sendmail.cf for masquerading. Then you can
make the mail look like it is from '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' One thing to keep
in mind is that if you do get to a point where the TSM server is sending the
mail out as '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' then your exchange server is going to need
to know who that really is, so it can deliver mail to that address.

I will stop there because the only way I've ever made progress with
sendmail issues is through trial and lots of error.I hope this at least
gives you a starting point.

We currently use AIX sendmail to mail copies of our vault list generated

With the recent rash of viruses being sent by email, this company will not
accept email from a sender they can not do a reverse DNS lookup on.
And they can't do a 'reverse DNS lookup on the mail they are getting from

Our mail guys,( who are like me and don't know much about sendmail) tell me
that there should be a way of supplying a from address that is more public

For the life of me I can't find this in any of the manuals I've searched.

Re: Identifying client schedule mode.

Sias,

What you are saying is accurate but if the client is using prompted, the
server somehow needs to know that. The point being if you tell me to call
you I would need to have a system for remembering that. If the client
requests to be prompted then the server must also have a way of
knowing/remembering that.

Jon,

Bad news, you can not see what the schedmode for the
client on the server.
Because the parameter is set in the dsm.sys file
(Unix) or the dsm.opt file (Windows).
If you do not see the schedmode parameter in the
file then the default is being used.
I believe the default is polling.

No, we are using the same port on the 3494. When it is

to the SP2 node it initializes fine. Thanks for your suggestion,

Are you using a different rs232 port on the 3494 for your h50? Does
the

You
might be able to do it yourself if you have Service Mode access.

TSM'ers,

If anyone is using rs232 to communicate with
a 3494, some help would be appreciated. We
are currently running TSM 4.1 on AIX 4.3.3 on
a 604e High node ( MCA ) in an SP2 complex.
3590 drives SCSI attached in a 3494 using rs232
serial LM connection on a serial attached port
extender.

We are trying to move to an H50 ( PCI ) , still
using AIX 4.3.3 and attempting to attach the LM
to the serial ( S2 ) port. We have tried using a 25 / 9
pin converter, but still are unable to connect to the LM.
We continue to get the 'Library is offline to host' message.
We are using Atape 5.4.4and atldd 4.1.5.

We have followed all doc about drivers. Adding atld through
SMIT starts lmcp daemon correctly and ibmatl.conf is
correctly configured. We have also tried a null / modem
connection between the serial cable and 25 / 9 pin
converter.

There are a couple of threads about this type of thing
but none of them address specifics about cable type
or any extras that are needed for connection.

If anyone has any suggestions or has made this
work, we would appreciate hearing from you.

The reason I asked is because some people are still using older
versions of
this client (i.e., before it became TDP and was called a 'Connect
Agent').
I'm sure someone in this group can give you a query to gather this info
off
the server, but you might want to check the TDP documentation at the
following link:

http://www.tivoli.com/support/public/Prodman/public_manuals/td/DataProtectio

nforOracle2.2.html

I'm sure there's a log file for the client which, if you set the
'verbose'
option for, will spit out all the files backed up on a particular
backup.
I'm a DBA, but we don't use TDP for Oracle for any of our instances.
Sorry
I can't be more help. Anyone else?

Long-Term Storage

2002-01-08 Thread Martin, Jon R.

 Good Afternoon,

I am trying to identify the best solution for achieving long term
storage requirements. However each option has pros and cons. Would anyone
like to share their long-term storage solution and why they chose that way.
My storage requirement is 7 years.

Here are the options I have come up with so far

Backup Sets:
pros: Can be placed on CD ( lower media cost and easier to store )
Does not require addition client session

cons: A backup set can only be restored in it's entirety.
How to create backup sets for databases backed up with
utilities like SQL-Backtrack or TDP?

Archiving:
pros: Possible to restore single files

cons: I don't think it is possible to archive to CD-Rom. ( Correct
me if I'm wrong )
Cost of tape cartridges to hold 7 years worth of data
extremely expensive.
Requires addition session with client

Additionally one benefit to a backup set would be that if in X years if the
TSM Server is replaced by another product only the TSM client would be
needed to restore a backup set. Whereas to restore archived information the
TSM server would be required.

Thanks,
Jon Martin

Re: Long-Term Storage

2002-01-08 Thread Martin, Jon R.

Dwight,

I think that is what I will try. I have one question though.
Testing this option as below I noticed it attempts to redefine client option
sets when importing. Is there a way around that?

export node jon filedata=backupactive preview=no devclass=backupset

import node jon devclass=backupset filedata=backupactive preview=no
volumenames=10518891.EXP

Thanks,
Jon

for really long term storage...
if you have any management class with long term retention you get screwed by
all your directory info being stuck in it and I've learned the error in my
ways with (10yrarch management classes ! )
Here is a best bet !
register a node with name blah_exp
have the client (if uinx) set a server entry to connect to the tsm server
using a NODE blah_EXP entry...
have the client archive the data for long term retention, then do an
export of the node blah_exp
you could perform your export to a CD if you had the ability to burn CD's...
I do export to tape, take them out of the ATL and send them offsite...

just my 2 cents worth

Re: Memory Tuning For AIX

I think the wide range of answers as to what this output means is a good
indication that IBM would do well to develop a more concise tool for
reviewing resource utilization. As for my opinion I would start with
'vmtune' and then look at 'iostat'. Good Luck

Hello-
I am having a memory problem.
I am runnning AIX 4.3.2 on a H50. TSM is the only application
running on the server. When I run vmstat I get the following...

Does this look normal to anyone? From my limited understanding of vmstat
it looks like:
CPU utilization is maxed out
I have blocked processes (the b column)
The scan rate (sr) column is very high.
The server has 1Gig of memory. I'm really not sure how to tell how much is
allocated to
the OS and how much is allocated to TSM. Does anyone have any ideas or
pointers is
tuning memory for AIX? Do I need a memory upgrade?
I started checking this because my server response is horrible.
Thanks.

Re: FILESPACE_NAME vs. HL_NAME

2002-01-03 Thread Martin, Jon R.

Along thos same lines maybe if there are three file systems with the
following naming conventions

/work
/work/data
/work/data/martine

Would TSM back up each of these filesystems separately thus giving you three
different file names?

Hello Mike,

In UNIX, a filespace for ADSM is a filesystem. So in this case,
it looks like the /work is the filespace unless you have mapped
a directory like /work/data as a nfs at the time of the backup or
perhaps you have used the client option virtualmountpoint.
Hope this helps.

Good Afternoon,

A client is having trouble locating archived files using dsmc q ar. The
problem
seems to be that the filespace_name and hl_names differ between the files,
even
though they were archived from the same place.

Server: AIX, ADSM v3.1
Client: SunOS, ADSM v3.1

An example:
select filespace_name,hl_name,ll_name,archive_date from archives where
node_name='HUBER'
and ll_name='BS0266'

FILESPACE_NAME: /WORK
   HL_NAME: /DATA/MARTINE/
   LL_NAME: BS0266
  ARCHIVE_DATE: 2001-12-22 10:46:30.00

FILESPACE_NAME: /WORK/DATA
   HL_NAME: /MARTINE/
   LL_NAME: BS0266
  ARCHIVE_DATE: 2001-12-22 10:41:24.00

FILESPACE_NAME: /WORK/DATA/MARTINE
   HL_NAME: /
   LL_NAME: BS0266
  ARCHIVE_DATE: 2001-11-20 05:38:10.00

Depending on how the client specifies the request, they will get a
different
version of the file.

The question is, how does ADSM determine which part of the path is
considered
filespace_name, and which is hl_name?

Thanks,
Mike

Subject: Help! I need more space

Hi folks,

I have a situation where our company has two backups systems, TSM being one
of them. The 'other' backup system doesn't work for various reasons and we
are planning to move the servers that backup to it to TSM. On the weekend
that other system fell a part. Now I need to backup about 500GBs into a
Magstar L32 that really doesn't have that much space. I'm in a tight spot
and I need some creative ways to backup that much data. Here's what I've
been trying:

- turn collocation off, or from 'filespace' to 'on'
- reviewing old nodes and the largest filespaces, but this didn't save to
much
- I don't think I can reduce any copies or the length of time that the
copies are stored

Here's what I do have:
- I do have 8 x 36 GB disks that will be here soon
- a ton of tapes, no room in the Magstar, but I must have 200-300 extra
tapes
- I also have 24 x 18.2 GB disks right now that are used for my disk pools
and 4 x 9.1 GB disks that are used

So I was thinking I that I could:
1. use the 36 GB disks for a primary pool. Still sending the data offsite
(copy pool) because I have a lot of tapes, OR,
2. start taking tapes out of the Magstar and just setting them aside, when
they are full

I do have a LTO coming but not for 2-3 months.

I could really use a creative idea to store a lot of data. I have the tapes
just not the slots inside my Magstar.

Thanks Miles

Data Security/Encryption TSM v3.7

2001-11-30 Thread Martin, Jon R.

Hello,

To support a disaster recovery initiative it is intended that all
corporate servers are backed up to TSM. The administrator of our firewall
resists this mainly for the fact that the client data is sent in clear text
over the network.

As the TSM administrator it has fallen to me to find common ground
between the firewall administrator and the people driving the disaster
recovery initiative. Reading the archives I found the following opinions
and would like to hear what anyone else might have to add or what recent
opinion are.

1. Set client compression and then the data is transferred in a compressed
format. Is this a proprietary/undocumented compressed format?

2. Implement 'ssh' for secure connectivity between the server and client.
Can anyone recommend a source for more information on doing this?

3. Using PRESCHED and POSTSCHED encrypt sensitive data to a temp directory
on the client and then backup that data. Any recommendations on available
products?

4. The data on a TSM cartridge can only be read with the database for that
TSM Server. It would be extremely difficult and costly to retrieve this
data from the tape alone. That seemed to be the consensus in the archives.
Does it still hold true?

5. With the exception of an attack from within the company, if an intruder
is in the position to capture internal network traffic would not that not
mean that the firewall and other security measures have already been
compromised?

Thank You,
Jon Martin

Hi *SM-ers!
I will replace my 9 Gb. SSA disks in the very near future. The new disks (36
Gb. 10.000 rpm) will have to be added to the diskpool one by one.
I remember from the last time that it was quite difficult to allocate a disk
file which fills the disk completely. If you have, for instance, a 9 Gb.
disk, you cannot create a 9 Gb. file by issuing a DSMFMT -G -DATA filename
9. This results in an error indicating the there isn't enough space
available. Apparently the dsmfmt utility needs a little bit overhead space.
Does anybody know how to calculate the maximum space one can specify to fill
the disk to it's maximum?
Thanks in advance for any reply!!!

Re: Long, long, long backup sessions

2001-08-24 Thread Martin, Jon R.

Zoltan,

I would suggest the problem is nothing but the amount of files that
need to be processed. I have one client with 3 million + files set that
file system to do incrbydate instead of incremental. The results were
definitely worth it. The only loophole I can see with this solution is as
follows. If a file is added to the file system with a previous date then
incrbydate will not pick it up. For example if you untar files into the
filesystem the files will maintain their original date and not be backed
up. To catch these exceptions you would need to do a regular incremental
once a week or as you see fit.

The only other option I have seen on this board is to tar the files
up first and then backup them up. This however might require a large amount
of disk space.

As far as no data being transferred for the first eight hours I find
that surprising. I would assume that the first file system to be looked at
is / and there would definitely be files there that need to be backed up.
The only explanation I can think of is if your backup is looking at the
filesystem with the large number of files first.

IMHO

Looking for some guidance to improve backup session times.

The time it takes to backup our e-mail servers (4-way processor H70 AIX
4.3.3 with 2GB RAM. TSM client is 4.1.2.0) is becoming unacceptable and
unworkable.

Currently, backup sessions are sometimes taking more than 16-hours (as I
send this, one session that started yesterday evening is still running),
yet the total amount of data backed up is only around 2.5-4GB. The current
session stats shows the first data transfer wasn't until around 3:45 this
morning, yet the backup session started around 6PM, YESTERDAY.

Yes, I understand the LARGE amount of OBJECTS INSPECTED is an issue. But,
the current data tells me it took over 8-hours from the start of the
schedule to when it actually transfered any data from the client to the
server (OS390 TSM 4.1.3).

Here is a end-of-schedule snippet from a previous days run. Note, it
started at 6PM and finished at 9AM the next day. When it actually did any
work, it went pretty fast:

The Elapsed processing time is confusing. Is it trying to tell me it
only took 3-minutes to actually transfer the 2.83GB ??

What can we do to improve these times ? Is INCRBYDATE going to make that
much of a different, considering we will still have to do some kinda full
backup, anyway ?

Any and all suggestions will be seriously considered !

Hi Folk!

I have an urgent problem with my ADSM Server 3.1.2.50 on a Windows
NT System. Yes I know, it's quiet old.
The new 4.1 x Server is also running on an nerw machine but unfor-
tunaltely not all nodes are actually migrated. Murphy is everywhere.

As I explained earlier the day, the Server was unable to perform a db
backup on Satrurday. So at least the server crasched.
My first action was to create a new logvolume with dsmfmt and extend
the log db with the offline dsmserv extend db command.

This works quiet well and I tried to restart the Server. Now the Server
starts, but crashed after a few minutes with an Dr Watson in the modul
dsmsvc.dbg an an entry in the eventlog, which announce an error in the
perflib dsmcperf.dll.

Any suggestions how to bring up server for the last few days.

I don't know if the Release 1.2.50 is the latest 3.1.x release.
So is there any later patch release? (maybe this can help)
If yes - Where can I find it (there is nothing on the IBM Sites)

Thanks in advance

TAPEPOOL Pending Volumes

2001-08-16 Thread Martin, Jon R.

Because of capacity we are having a hard time maintaining scratch tapes in
our library. I thought of the following and would appreciate any feedback
on it's pros and cons.

Much like a copypool tape is kept offsite until it's Delay period for
reuse has expired I was considering checking my TAPEPOOL pending volumes
out of the library until they completed their reuse period. Currenltly our
reuse period has been temporarily set to 3 days and even with that there are
usually 10 slots in the library occupied by pending volumes. I realize that
for this to work it would need to be done daily but the alternative problems
are worse.

Any thoughts?

Re: SQL-BACKTRACK ORACLE

2001-08-13 Thread Martin, Jon R.

We do incremental on weekdays and full on weekends for our Oracle databases.
I do find that both types of backup take about the same amount of time.
As far as I know we never looked into backup of just redo during the week
but I think we will now.

We used to use SQL Backtrack and we did a hot full backup of a 1 TB database
nightly in about 3-4 hours going to a 300GB disk pool with 16 threads. We
then backed up the redo logs nightly.

Hi:
Our oracle DBA claims that 'hot' incremental backups of Oracle takes as long
as 'hot' full backups using SQL-BACKTRACK. Instead he does weekly full 'hot'
backups of the database and backups of the redo logs thru the week.

Is that how others using SQL-BACKTRACK and ORACLE do thier backups?

Re: Transfer Rate

2001-08-02 Thread Martin, Jon R.

What is the file structure that you are backing up? Are there a LARGE amount
of small files the client needs to process? What is the copy serialization
set at for your copy groups. If you are backing up active files and the
copy serialization is set to make multiple attempts on an active file,
possibly that can add alot of time.

Just some wild guesses.

Aggregate uses wall-clock time;
Network uses the intervals between when the client says I'm sending data
now, to when the server actually receives it.

It's perfectly normal to have aggregate be a lot slower than network.

If you really want to speed up your backups, you need to
look at the accounting log records (.../server/bin/dsmaccnt.log - see admin
guide for layout)
to see which of your clients suffer most from idle wait, media wait, or comm
wait.

Backup Strategy

2001-08-01 Thread Martin, Jon R.

Hello,

Currently our backup strategy for the TSM Servers is as follows on a
daily basis.

1. Backup 'diskpool' to 'copypool'
2. Backup 'tapepool' to 'copypool'
3. Full back up of DB

From what I understand this is the most bullet proof method.
However we are at edge of our tape libraries capacity and the 3 steps above
are taking about 4 1/2 hours to complete each day.

Is anyone using a strategy that would reduce both the amount of time
and possibly the number of volumes needed for these administrative tasks.

Thanks,

Jon Martin

Re: Teaching others TSM

2001-07-27 Thread Martin, Jon R.

Francisco,

I have been administering TSM for three months now. The previous
administrator is my manager so I have had someone on hand to answer my
questions. I feel I have a learned a lot with the sink or swim method and
subscribing to this mail list has helped also. I first learned about the
clients and how they worked, then scheduling, and then moved onto things
like the DB, log, diskpools and tapepools etc... My opinion is that if you
are not familiar with the material you won't get much from formal training.
I've done ok learning it one layer at a time and reading the Administrator's
Reference.

What is the best way to teach someone how to use TSM?
When I learnt it some time back it took me 3 months of setting up the
server and clients and just trying different things to get all the
concepts.

When I came back to the company after 2 years I found the setup was in
fairly bad shape even though of the two people that maintained it while I
was gone one went to training.

I think hand's on is the best training, but I don't think the two people I
need to train can be made available full time just to learn TSM.

What is the general consensus about the classes? Do they truly help new
users?

Zoltan,

Interesting subject I was just talking about this possibility the other day.
My question refers to part 1. When you say the node is not a TSM-client I
am assuming that they have the TSM client installed they are just not
registered with the server as a node? Otherwise how would they access the
utilities to open the connection in the first place?

Besides taking the safety precaution of locking the source node out has
anyone experienced this situation before?

if the following occured:

1. Client (lets call it ABC for this arguement since it is not a TSM
client) signs into TSM using nodename XYZ to restore XYZ's files to
another system
2. Restore is progressing. Large compress files take many hours to
restore.
3. Node XYZ signs into TSM and does a BACKUP while ABC is still signed on
as XYZ and is still restoring XYZ's files to another machine.

I am trying to build an include/exclude list for a

if I put it on an exclude statement, I will never be
able to backup it unless I include it again. I have
this:

/opt/tivoli
/opt/OMImag
/opt/netscape
/opt/MC1
/opt/MC2
.

/opt/MC6
/opt/data
/opt/development
.

/opt/lotsofdirs

I want to backup the whole /opt filesystem but the MC1
and MC2...MC6 in the night and to backup only this MC*
at in the day.

I have already tryied to use two incl/excl lists but
when I use the second one and some file that was
included is now excluded it is automaticly deleted by
an expiration process.

I tryied to do the backup with a dsmc command but it
becomes an never-ending line (too long).

Hope you can give some advice.

David.

Schedule DB Backup not executing.

2001-07-13 Thread Martin, Jon R.

We use the following schedule to do a daily full backup of the database.
This is TSM 3.7 running on AIX 4.3.3. The past week I have noticed that
this schedule does not appear to be executing at all. The only other
process that is consistently running at this time is a storage pool backup.
I can start the db backup manually with no problems using the same command
listed in the schedule. This schedule has worked for a long time and I can
not recall any changes we have made in the past month that could be a cause.
Any ideas on this problem.

Re: How to make to inclexcl list to fit my needs???

2001-07-13 Thread Martin, Jon R.

David,

I found it a little easier to do setting up a schedule through the
web interface. I didn't use command line on the client side because I do
not have root access to the server that was having this problem. From the
command line you can issue.

dsmc i /dir/subdir/*

This should back up the specified directory, it's subdirectories and
files with disregard to the include exclude list.

I can see how my first post was misleading. I hope this works for
you

Check out page 715 of the Admin reference for AIX... Recovery Log
Extension Command. What you need to do is...

1) DSMFMT an additional recovery log (shouldn't need to make it too big)

dsmfmt -m -log /usr/lpp/adsmserv/bin/temprec.log 13

2) Use the DSMSERV EXTEND LOG command to do an emergeny recovery log
extension

dsmserv extend log /usr/lpp/adsmserv/bin/temprec.log 12

Once the recovery log extension finishes, you should be able to restart
the ADSM server normally..

Hi *SM-ers!
I asked this question before, but I haven't received a reply yet. Maybe
somebody from development can shed some light on this?

One of my Sun TSM clients reports error 195 during backups. This seems to be
related to APAR IC26775: CLIENT BACKUPS FAIL WITH RETURN CODE 195. I have
downloaded IC26775.tar.Z and installed the 3.7.2.14 client which is supposed
to fix this problem, but I still see the error. The strange thing is that I
can see in the Sun installation logs that IC26775 has been installed, but
when I start DSMC it still reports level 3.7.2. Now I'm confused. Shouldn't
it report 3.7.2.14 or is the version number not updated in this fix level?

Thanks in advance for any reply!!!

TSM db and log volumes / ESS

Error writing file /dbaa1vp0/db, errno = 27

Jon - From http://people.bu.edu/rbs/ADSM.QuickFacts :

dsmfmt errno 27 (EFBIG - File too It may be that your Unix filesize
large) limit prohibits writing a file that
large. Do 'limit filesize' to
check.
If that value is too small, try
'unlimit filesize'. If that doesn't
boost the value, you need to change
the
limit value that the operating
system
imposes upon you (in AIX, change
/etc/security/limits).
Another cause: the JFS file system
not
configured to allow large files
(greater than 2 GB), per Large File
Enabled. Do 'lsfs -q' and look for
the
bf value: if false, not in
effect.
