Re: Delayed Schedule Start
Only this schedule has a priority of 'one', it is for testing the backup of one specific filesystem. There were no other events scheduled to run at this time, however, since the backup of this filesystem takes 14 hours (4.2 million objects/ 108 Gb) I assigned it higher priority over events occurring later in the day. Randomization is probably the answer. I did not realize that randomization would be used when no other sessions/processes were active on the TSM Server and/or client. Re: copy pools question?
Have you looked at export node filedata=active? Using export has met my needs where backupsets have not. Ya I thought about that too but there is a potential media management nightmare lurking here.. suppose you have a few of these critical clients that you do this to. How often do you create backupsets? Daily? Are you then going to ship a complete set of tapes offsite and bring the old ones onsite daily (thus emulating having 1 copy of 'active' data offsite daily)? There are potential costs lurking here in how often you have the offsite vault bring tapes back I would guess.. Also you end up with 1 tape or set of tapes per server. So if you have an LTO tape that holds 100GB native and your critical client only has 3GB of OS data stored on it, your not using the total capacity of the tape. Though you may or may not care that you're wasting space this way.. The number of tapes you ultimately use for this system may be more then simply moving all data offsite (if you're trying to save on the # of tapes you have to ship offsite). All in all it might be a solution though it's not very eloquent and whether it does what you're ultimately trying to accomplish is questionable (i.e. saving on # of tapes you have to ship offsite?) We can't very well schedule this, because the completion time of the backup varies widely, from one backup to the next. We can afford to begin the tape copy process neither too soon, nor too late. One idea might be to have a DB2 script invoke unix to start something via /usr/bin/dsmadmc -id=admin -pass=password, et cetera, but this would mean hardcoding the password with the -pass= parameter, which would present a security exposure. Re: AS/400 TSM
Henk, This past summer we added 4 AS/400s to our TSM environment. We are running TSM v 3.7.2 on AIX v4.3.3. Our Library is a SCSI connected 3575. There are redbooks out there with great information on setting up your management class, and tips for setting up BRMS on the AS/400. We found two limitations. 1 BRMS does all management and expiration of the files stored in TSM. - For us this meant trusting the AS/400 administrators were properly managing BRMS. If they were not it would have uncontrollable results on the TSM server for us. 2 The backup times were extremely slow. - I looked somewhat extensively but could not find any reasons for this. The backups were done through Gigabit Ethernet. I found some postings which indicating there were known performance problems, but nothing to indicate a solution. In the end we removed the AS/400's from our environment. Someday when we upgrade and have a 3494 library we try to add the AS/400s to TSM again, but this time backing up through Fibre. Try this link for good information. http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/service/brms/adsmtips.htm Thanks, Jon Martin -Original Message- From: Henk ten Have [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, March 06, 2002 10:48 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AS/400 TSM Does anyone has experience, i.e. right now, in using TSM for AS/400 backup's? More than one storage pool backing up to a single copypool.
All, Is it possible to have two storage pool's backup to the same copy storage pool? I don't see anything in the manuals saying yes or no. We currently have a 'TAPEPOOL' which is backed up to a 'COPYPOOL' . Then the 'COPYPOOL' tapes are sent offsite. The original intention of our TSM installation was for backup of 'server' data only. The 'TAPEPOOL' uses collocation. Recently a growing number of executives have asked to have their desktops installed as TSM clients. My problem is that right now each of these desktops will hog an entire volume because of the collocation. What I would like to do is create a 'TAPEPOOL_PC' which has collocation turned off and does a backup to the existing 'COPYPOOL'. Thank You, Jon Martin

Re: Used to Be PC Magazine Article, morphed to NT/Novell BMR Proc edure
All, I think Kelly brings up a good point that, most of us don't get to practice disaster recovery very often. I know that there are plenty of courses for TSM installation, configuration, and administration. Does anyone know of available training with a strict focus on disaster recovery in theory and in practice? Unfortunately, I don't have a development or test environment for doing this kind of training on my own. Thanks, Jon Martin -Original Message- From: Kelly Lipp [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, February 12, 2002 2:29 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Used to Be PC Magazine Article, morphed to NT/Novell BMR Procedure I'll put in a plug for my friend Wanda Prather. In the adsm.org archives you should find a very nice procedure developed by Wanda. Perhaps she'll post it here once more for those of us who missed it. In general, the method is to install a bare bones OS from the distribution CDs, configure it, install the TSM client, configure it, and restore the backup on top of the new installation. This is an easy procedure to follow. I'd like to see a side-by-side runoff between this and the BMR product to get an idea of the time difference. OK, don't like this idea? How about using Ghost to periodically snap an image of your OS (or perhaps have a generic one with TSM installed ready to go). Lose the disk? Ghost the image and do a restore from TSM to bring the image up-to-date. As for restoring your TSM server. That is very easy if you have three things: a database backup, the devconfig.out file and the volhist.out file. From these three items, I can restore your TSM server in four hours of less (very dependent on the size of the database: for very small databases, you're probably looking at less than an hour, start to finish). The problem with this is most of us never practice it. In my job I have the fortune of getting to do this periodically (monthly) so I've gotten pretty confident so to me it's easy. I recommend doing it the first time when you don't have to. When you have to do it, nerves take over and the process is much harder. Kelly J. Lipp Storage Solutions Specialists, Inc. Re: TSM Sendmail and AIX
James, You can cheat if you like.. Send the vault information to your local corporate e-mail account. Then if using Outlook you can set up an auto-forward rule. Otherwise.. my sendmail knowledge is limited and rusty but... The email they receive is probably coming from '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'. You can look into using /etc/aliases or editing the DM line in the /etc/sendmail.cf for masquerading. Then you can make the mail look like it is from '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' One thing to keep in mind is that if you do get to a point where the TSM server is sending the mail out as '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' then your exchange server is going to need to know who that really is, so it can deliver mail to that address. I will stop there because the only way I've ever made progress with sendmail issues is through trial and lots of error.I hope this at least gives you a starting point. Identifying client schedule mode.
Hello, this should be an easy one... The TSM Server has schedmode set to any. What can I run from the server to see what mode a client is using? I have been selecting from various tables but have not had any luck in finding the answer. Thanks, Jon
Re: Identifying client schedule mode.
Sias, What you are saying is accurate but if the client is using prompted, the server somehow needs to know that. The point being if you tell me to call you I would need to have a system for remembering that. If the client requests to be prompted then the server must also have a way of knowing/remembering that. Long-Term Storage
Good Afternoon, I am trying to identify the best solution for achieving long term storage requirements. However each option has pros and cons. Would anyone like to share their long-term storage solution and why they chose that way. My storage requirement is 7 years. Here are the options I have come up with so far Backup Sets: pros: Can be placed on CD ( lower media cost and easier to store ) Does not require addition client session cons: A backup set can only be restored in it's entirety. How to create backup sets for databases backed up with utilities like SQL-Backtrack or TDP? Archiving: pros: Possible to restore single files cons: I don't think it is possible to archive to CD-Rom. ( Correct me if I'm wrong ) Cost of tape cartridges to hold 7 years worth of data extremely expensive. Requires addition session with client Additionally one benefit to a backup set would be that if in X years if the TSM Server is replaced by another product only the TSM client would be needed to restore a backup set. Whereas to restore archived information the TSM server would be required. Thanks, Jon Martin

I need more space Hi folks, I have a situation where our company has two backups systems, TSM being one of them. The 'other' backup system doesn't work for various reasons and we are planning to move the servers that backup to it to TSM. On the weekend that other system fell a part. Now I need to backup about 500GBs into a Magstar L32 that really doesn't have that much space. I'm in a tight spot and I need some creative ways to backup that much data. Here's what I've been trying: - turn collocation off, or from 'filespace' to 'on' - reviewing old nodes and the largest filespaces, but this didn't save to much - I don't think I can reduce any copies or the length of time that the copies are stored Here's what I do have: - I do have 8 x 36 GB disks that will be here soon - a ton of tapes, no room in the Magstar, but I must have 200-300 extra tapes - I also have 24 x 18.2 GB disks right now that are used for my disk pools and 4 x 9.1 GB disks that are used So I was thinking I that I could: 1. use the 36 GB disks for a primary pool. Still sending the data offsite (copy pool) because I have a lot of tapes, OR, 2. start taking tapes out of the Magstar and just setting them aside, when they are full I do have a LTO coming but not for 2-3 months. I could really use a creative idea to store a lot of data. I have the tapes just not the slots inside my Magstar. Data Security/Encryption TSM v3.7
Hello, To support a disaster recovery initiative it is intended that all corporate servers are backed up to TSM. The administrator of our firewall resists this mainly for the fact that the client data is sent in clear text over the network. As the TSM administrator it has fallen to me to find common ground between the firewall administrator and the people driving the disaster recovery initiative. Reading the archives I found the following opinions and would like to hear what anyone else might have to add or what recent opinion are. 1. Set client compression and then the data is transferred in a compressed format. Is this a proprietary/undocumented compressed format? 2. Implement 'ssh' for secure connectivity between the server and client. Can anyone recommend a source for more information on doing this? 3. Using PRESCHED and POSTSCHED encrypt sensitive data to a temp directory on the client and then backup that data. Any recommendations on available products? 4. The data on a TSM cartridge can only be read with the database for that TSM Server. It would be extremely difficult and costly to retrieve this data from the tape alone. That seemed to be the consensus in the archives. Does it still hold true? 5. With the exception of an attack from within the company, if an intruder is in the position to capture internal network traffic would not that not mean that the firewall and other security measures have already been compromised? Thank You, Jon Martin

If you have, for instance, a 9 Gb. disk, you cannot create a 9 Gb. file by issuing a DSMFMT -G -DATA filename 9. This results in an error indicating the there isn't enough space available. Re: Long, long, long backup sessions
Zoltan, I would suggest the problem is nothing but the amount of files that need to be processed. I have one client with 3 million + files set that file system to do incrbydate instead of incremental. The results were definitely worth it. The only loophole I can see with this solution is as follows. If a file is added to the file system with a previous date then incrbydate will not pick it up. For example if you untar files into the filesystem the files will maintain their original date and not be backed up. To catch these exceptions you would need to do a regular incremental once a week or as you see fit. The only other option I have seen on this board is to tar the files up first and then backup them up. This however might require a large amount of disk space. As far as no data being transferred for the first eight hours I find that surprising. I would assume that the first file system to be looked at is / and there would definitely be files there that need to be backed up. The only explanation I can think of is if your backup is looking at the filesystem with the large number of files first. TAPEPOOL Pending Volumes
Because of capacity we are having a hard time maintaining scratch tapes in our library. I thought of the following and would appreciate any feedback on it's pros and cons. Much like a copypool tape is kept offsite until it's Delay period for reuse has expired I was considering checking my TAPEPOOL pending volumes out of the library until they completed their reuse period. Currenltly our reuse period has been temporarily set to 3 days and even with that there are usually 10 slots in the library occupied by pending volumes. I realize that for this to work it would need to be done daily but the alternative problems are worse. Any thoughts? Jon Martin

Backup Strategy
Hello, Currently our backup strategy for the TSM Servers is as follows on a daily basis. 1. Backup 'diskpool' to 'copypool' 2. Backup 'tapepool' to 'copypool' 3. Full back up of DB From what I understand this is the most bullet proof method. However we are at edge of our tape libraries capacity and the 3 steps above are taking about 4 1/2 hours to complete each day. Re: Sun client problem
Eric, You are not alone. I am having the same problem with one Solaris Client. I also applied the same patch and observe the same output from dsmc. Since I am upgrading to 4.1 server in the near future I haven't put much effort into correcting it. -Original Message- From: Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, June 15, 2001 4:03 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Sun client problem Hi *SM-ers! I asked this question before, but I haven't received a reply yet. Maybe somebody from development can shed some light on this? One of my Sun TSM clients reports error 195 during backups. This seems to be related to APAR IC26775: CLIENT BACKUPS FAIL WITH RETURN CODE 195. I have downloaded IC26775.tar.Z and installed the 3.7.2.14 client which is supposed to fix this problem, but I still see the error. The strange thing is that I can see in the Sun installation logs that IC26775 has been installed, but when I start DSMC it still reports level 3.7.2. Now I'm confused. Shouldn't it report 3.7.2.14 or is the version number not updated in this fix level? Thanks in advance for any reply!!! TSM db and log volumes / ESS
I am trying to create an additional db and log volume to implement TSM mirroring. If I use a logical volume created on an internal scsi or ssa attached drive I have no problem. However the goal is to create the logical volumes on a ESS vpath. When I try to dsmfmt these volumes I run into the following error. # dsmfmt -m -db /dbaa1vp0/db 7181 by AIX Server DSMFMT Extent/Volume Formatting Program Licensed Materials - Property of IBM 5697-TSM (C) Copyright IBM Corporation 1990, 1997. Error writing file /dbaa1vp0/db, errno = 27 Has anyone had a similar experience. It is a standard logical volume with a mounted JFS. Re: TSM db and log volumes / ESS
This is it exactly. I should have searched the archive before posting. Thanks for the reply -Original Message- From: Richard Sims [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, June 14, 2001 3:46 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: TSM db and log volumes / ESS Error writing file /dbaa1vp0/db, errno = 27 Jon - From http://people.bu.edu/rbs/ADSM.QuickFacts : dsmfmt errno 27 (EFBIG - File too It may be that your Unix filesize large) limit prohibits writing a file that large. Do 'limit filesize' to check. If that value is too small, try 'unlimit filesize'. If that doesn't boost the value, you need to change the limit value that the operating system imposes upon you (in AIX, change /etc/security/limits). Another cause: the JFS file system not configured to allow large files (greater than 2 GB), per Large File Enabled. Do 'lsfs -q' and look for the bf value: if false, not in effect. Richard Sims, BU
Recovery Log Space
Good Morning, I am running TSM on AIX 4.3. Most of the suggestions I have seen for correcting a recovery log issue involve having access to TSM. Unfortunately I don't have any access.
