Re: Netware backup include/exclude/domain issues

2007-06-07 Thread Matt Zufelt
It is possible to load it multiple times with the same name. However, I prefer
to rename it for unload purposes. If you load with the same name, when you
type 'unload dsmc', all instances will unload. If you've renamed them, you can
'unload dsmcvol1' or 'unload dsmcvol2' to unload the specific instance only.

Re: Netware backup include/exclude/domain issues

2007-06-06 Thread Matt Zufelt
I have something similar with a NetWare cluster here. Any given server has an
instance of the TSM client loaded for the local SYS volume and server specific
information. Then, each clustered resource (which has its own volume) loaded
on that server has another instance of the TSM client. The dsm.opt file for
the server contains the line:

DOMAIN SYS: SERVERSPECIFICINFO

This causes that instance of the TSM client to only backup sys and
serverspecificinfo, but skips the other volumes that are present on the server

The dsm.opt file on the other volumes have the line:

DOMAIN VOLNAME:

and only backup the volume that is explicitly stated in the domain line. There
shouldn't be a need to negate volumes using DOMAIN. Just explicitly define the
volume you want to backup.

Try as I might, I can't seem to get an incremental backup from scanning

If I negate the volumes via the DOMAIN statement, this works. But, as we
add volumes, we would have to go around and update dozens of opt
files.not a good idea since we are already at 20-volumes.

I tried the approach of EXCLUDE *\*:* and then an INCLUDE
server\volume:/.../ but it still scans everything. Even tried
 exclude.dir *

It also keeps erroring on trying to backup System specific information

We've done this. Essentially, yes it is just a matter of loading the firmware
and re-cabling the drives. However, this is not something that you can do
yourself--at least we couldn't at the time we purchased the upgrade. The price
of the upgrade included an IBM field engineer coming on site to perform the
upgrade. Perhaps that's why it is so pricey? Although I never confirmed it,
I'm guessing the requirement to have a field engineer come on-site was to
protect the integrity of the code.

Re: Problems with Netware backups

Somewhere along the way (version 5.2.x of the TSM client if memory serves), the
ALL-LOCAL domain was updated to automatically include NDS backups on servers
that hold replicas. I fixed the problem by changing the domain line in the
dsm.opt file for all of my replica-holding servers (except the one I actually
perform NDS backups from) to the following.

DOMAIN ALL-LOCAL -NDS:

That still does an all local backup, but excludes NDS.

Changing from barcode length normal to extended

2004-06-28 Thread Matt Zufelt
We're in the process of replacing the LTO1 drives with LTO2 drives in our 3583

our TSM system was setup, we were using the normal length tape labels (for example,

I am familiar with the procedure for changing the 3583 library to use the extended

data loss)?

Re: NetWare Cluster Issues...

2004-05-11 Thread Matt Zufelt
I am currently backing up a 9 node NetWare 6 cluster. The docs were of some help
(though not much--the cluster portion was very difficult to make sense of). Most of
what I have was the result of collaboration with a couple of smart folks over at UNC
Chapel Hill.

To put it briefly, the key pieces of what we put together here at SUU are:

1. Load the TSA with the /cluster=off switch
2. Use the cluster option in the dsm.opt file
3. Each local node loads dsmcad with the dsm.opt specifying a domain of SYS: and
SERVERSPECIFICINFO (I've actually removed the sys: recently because there's really
nothing in there that is worth backing up. If the server crashes, resources will move
to another node and I'll fix the crashed node. There's nothing special on the SYS vol
that I'll need to recover)
4. A unique TSM node name was created for each cluster resource
5. Each cluster resource loads a renamed dsmcad.nlm (renamed so that each resource has
a unique name allowing for easier unloads--if I just unloaded dsmcad, all instances
would unload). The renamed dsmcad.nlm is loaded with the -optfile= parameter so that
a unique dsm.opt can be used for each resource. The unique dsm.opt file contains the
TSM node name, the domain line that points specifically to the clustered volume, and a
specific httpport for that resource.

I've got a longer doc that goes into more detail that I will send you off-list.

Re: Windows XP, ASR, and ANS1468E

2004-03-09 Thread Matt Zufelt
Thank you to those that provided suggestions yesterday. I added exclude lines to my
DSM.OPT file to take care of all the files that are in use. That cleaned up those
error messages, but did not help with the ASR error. I'm still getting the ANS1468E
when my client attempts to backup the automated system recovery files. Below is a
copy of the entire dsmerror.log file from last night:

03/09/2004 00:08:33 ANS1228E Sending of object 'C:' failed
03/09/2004 00:08:33 ANS1468E Backing up Automated System Recovery (ASR) files failed.
No files will be backed up.

03/09/2004 00:14:04 ANS1512E Scheduled event 'BACKUP' failed. Return code = 12.

As mentioned previously, I cannot do an ASR backup manually either (via backup asr at
the DSMC command line). At this point I don't know what else to do but remove
SYSTEMOBJECT from my backup list. Don't really want to do that for all the obvious
reasons, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if that was the only solution. If
this client were to ever die, I would probably prefer to do a ground-up rebuild
anyway, rather than an ASR restore.

Thanks again for the help!

Windows XP, ASR, and ANS1468E

2004-03-08 Thread Matt Zufelt
I have a Windows XP SP1 PC that is reporting that backup has failed each night (return
code=12). Examining the dsmerror.log seems to indicate that the problem occurs when
the system tries to backup the automated system recovery (ASR) files. I get the
following two error messages:

03/08/2004 00:03:57 ANS1228E Sending of object 'C:' failed
03/08/2004 00:03:57 ANS1468E Backing up Automated System Recovery (ASR) files failed.
No files will be backed up.

If I try to run the ASR backup manually (backup asr via the command-line), I get the
same error message. I've searched the archive of this list and also the TSM support
page @ IBM and have not found anything that can help me solve this problem. I'm
hoping somebody here can help. Client is version 5.2.2.0 (on Windows XP SP1) and the
server is 5.2.2.3 (on AIX 5).

A complete copy of the error log from last night's backup follows my sig.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Backing up NDS/eDirectory server

2004-01-14 Thread Matt Zufelt
The answer on the automatic part is it depends. The newest version of the TSM
client for NetWare (5.2.2.0) will automatically backup NDS on a server that holds a
master replica. For other servers and previous versions of the TSM client, you need
to add NDS: to the domain line in your dsm.opt file.

For example:
DOMAIN ALL-LOCAL NDS:

When you query the filespaces on the TSM server, you'll see a filespace called
NODE\NDS: which is listed separate from other filespaces for the node.

Do I need to code anything special in the DSM.OPT / INCLUDE or is this an
automatic thing ? If it is automatic, how can I tell ? Is it part of the
server specific stuff ?

Also plan to do a test recovery of this server to another box, to test

Any hints/tips/suggestion/war-stories in this arena ? So far the only

You might also try dropping dsmc sched and letting dsmcad handle the scheduling.
That'll give you two advantages: (1) remove the operator intervention and (2) reduces
memory consumption by the TSM client on your NetWare server. Just add a line similar
to:

Re: tsa600.nlm memory leak on NW6 client

2003-09-27 Thread Matt Zufelt
Loading TSANDS is only necessary if you're backing up eDirectory itself. Not sure why
the admin wouldn't want it loaded, but I guess that's a different issue. Regarding
the memory leak: I've seen it documented somewhere (though I don't remember where)
that the problem isn't a leak so much as it is dsmc.nlm not releasing resources (but
then again, that sounds a lot like a leak).

The more files you back up, the more memory that is required by dsmc. The problem is,
even after the backup is finished, dsmc.nlm does not release the memory resources it
has consumed. Over a period of time, the memory usage grows until it reaches a point
that it is affecting server performance. Once you unload and then reload dsmc.nlm,
the memory is released.

I would recommend switching your method of loading the scheduler. Instead of loading
dsmc sched to handle the scheduling, add schedule to the managedservices line in your
dsm.opt file. For example:

MANAGEDSERVICES schedule webclient

Then, when you load dsmcad.nlm, it will handle the scheduling instead of dsmc.nlm.
The advantage of this method is reduced memory usage. When it is time to perform the
backups, dsmcad loads dsmc, does the backup, and then unloads dsmc thereby freeing the
memory. This method has worked wonders for memory utilization on our servers here.

All,

Environment:

AIX 5.1 ML4 server with TSM 5.1.7.0 code.

Client is a NW6 machine, 2GB memory, with TSA600.NLM (6.00.05), TSANDS.NLM
(version unknown), and SMDR.NLM (6.50.03). Backing up via 100/full
network connection.

For reasons that I do not fully understand, the Netware admin does not
want to load TSANDS, which is apparently used only to back up the NDS.
They only wish to get certain user files.

The backups run OK manually (dsmc i), but if I load dsmc sched and let
the scheduler handle it (server prompted), memory usage goes through the
roof...after one night, TSA600 will be using well over 1GB, and close to
2GB on the second night. The second night will not complete.

Is TSANDS *required*? I'm thinking that this might be the cause for the
memory consumption that I'm seeing.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Re: Netware 6 TSM 5.2 Client

2003-09-26 Thread Matt Zufelt
Rowan,

The cluster off switch tells the TSAs that your backup software is not cluster-aware.
That is, it isn't cluster-aware in terms of using NetWare's TSA calls to back up the
cluster. Without the /cluster=off switch, querying the server via the TSA will return
only the SYS volume and any other local volumes. With that switch present, all
volumes, including cluster volumes will be returned.

TSM has it's own cluster parameter for the dsm.opt file (clusternode yes) that adds
cluster support for TSM. While this isn't the native Novell method, it works fine.
It names the TSM filespaces something like ClusterName/Volume instead of
ServerName/Volume.

weeks, DSMC.NLM was using nearly 3/4 of a gig of RAM. Using managedservices and
dsmcad.nlm solved the problem.

Do it!

Run managedservices webclient schedule. I'd advise upgrading to the 5.1.5.6
client to avoid an potential problem with the client trying to grap an
invalid port, I believe it was an nwipcport error.

Other than that it's been good, helped with the memory release issue a lot.

I have been reading about a option called managedservices that you
put in the dsm.opt file to help resolve memory problems that the TSM
scheduler causes by not releasing the memory back to the NetWare
ServerWe have had ongoing problems with this forever. I would just
like to know if anyone is using this option on any NetWare clients
 Thanks

I would like to try this with the option managedservices schedule to
see if this helps What do you think?

Re: Netware Client problem

2003-02-26 Thread Matt Zufelt
I haven't seen your exact error message before, but it looks like you server may have
DNS name resolution issues. I would suggest checking three things first: (1) make
sure the server knows it's own hostname properly (check sys:etc\hostname). Also, make
sure that the hostname the server thinks it is using is the same as the hostname
configured in your local DNS.

(2) Make sure sys:etc\hosts is configured properly for your NetWare server. There
should be a line in there similar to:

192.168.1.3 servername.somewhere.comservername

(3) Make sure the server can do DNS lookups outside of TSM. You could try using ping
at the server console to check this (ping your TSM server by name, or a known site on
the Internet that answers pings, such as www.cisco.com). If that doesn't work, check
the file sys:etc\resolv.cfg. It should look something like this:

domain somewhere.com
nameserver 192.168.1.1
nameserver 192.168.1.2

with your domain and nameservers, of course.

Environment:
TSM server 5.1.1.6 on AIX 4.3.3
Netware 5 (latest TSA nlm's) TSM client 5.1.5.6

I just installed the 5.1.5.6 client on 4 new Netware 5 servers. On 3 of
them I'm getting the following error in the dsmerror.log:

02/26/2003 14:07:52 GetHostnameOrNumber(): gethostbyname(): errno = 35.
02/26/2003 14:07:52 TcpOpen: Could not resolve host name.
02/26/2003 14:07:52 psStoreSchedIDforCad: Unable to open ipc socket, errno =
1.

This is what is in the dsmwebcl.log:
Tivoli Storage Manager
Client Acceptor - Built Dec 17 2002 16:24:28
Version 5, Release 1, Level 5.6
Dsmcad is working in Webclient Schedule mode.
ANS3000I HTTP communications available on port 1581.
Command will be executed
in 1 minute.
Time remaining until execution:
Executing scheduled command now.

I get this when I do a load dsmcad it loads the dsmc.nlm.
Any suggestions or idea's?
