Re: API: dsmBindMC

2002-05-05 Thread Michel David

Hi Richard, Hi Tsm'rs.

Sorry to disturb you, Thank you very much for the
precedent answers.

Sorry, it doesn't work.

- The API connect automatically to DEFAULT MGT class
which redirect automatically to ARCHIVE: ARCHIVEPOOL
There we use the STUDIES filespace.

- I would like to redirect some ARCHIVE object to
another filespace OT-STUDIES and Pool OT-ARCHIVEPOOL.
OT-MGMT-CLASS

- Into the DSM.OPT file I added the following lines
INCLUDE \OT-STUDIES\* OT-MGMT-CLASS
INCLUDE OT-STUDIES\* OT-MGMT-CLASS
INCLUDE OT-STUDIES:\* OT-MGMT-CLASS

What else can I invent to make it work ?

Thank you very much.

Re: RESTORE VOLUMES

2002-02-14 Thread Michel David

Hi Garry
CStringArray is a class in MFC (You shlould use ODBC
to connect TSM tables and a Programming language)

If you DO not use C++ or something like it. You have
to use some script editor (PERL...)
I use Norton Dos.
Little example of script.
SETLOCAL
PUSHD C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM
EchoC:\Command.txt select file_name from contents
where volume_name='vol1'
DSMADMC -id=admin -password=admin -noconfirm
c:\Command.txt C:\Results.TXT
POPD
ENDLOCAL

This will just generate a file with the file_name
contents of the tape 'vol1'

This is a basis.
I hope you can continue.
Good luck

Michel

Take a look at the ARCHIVES and essentially CONTENTS

 1) select * from contents where volume_name='vol1'
You will get everything in the volume vol1.
 2) Save the info (file_name) in some CStringArray
 3) Sort your info to restore according to the

Re: Windows TSM-Client Crash

2002-01-22 Thread Michel David

Hi Wouter !
Maybe I am not the best specialist to answer you but.
We decide not to work the scheduler but with the SCRIPTS of the TSM ADMINISTRATOR.
They have powerfull enough function to run Backup and DB-Backup regular operations. We
didn't see any problem with the Service 'Server1' that can wake up.
If you need it I develop a set of usefull batches to test the LIBRARY and Report about
problems.

We are using TSM Server 4.2.1.9 on a Unix server (S7A) and use
TSM Client 4.2.1.20 on all the windows clients.
We use a 3583 Ultrium Tape Lib, with 2 drives.

Problem 1 :

Unfortunately we have problems with the TSM Client on 3 of our Windows
machines,

- 1 machine fails to start the TSM Scheduler service during boottime,
if we start it manually, it runs, but crashes several times during backup.
(we do an autorestart, if the service fails)

- the other 2 machines always start the backup, but the client (tsm
scheduler) crashes after a certain time,
are amount of files. There is not really a fixed point where the service
crashes. If backup
is launched from the scheduler, dsmsvc.exe crashes, if we start the backup
manually with dsmc incr,
dmsc.exe crashes.

Does anybody know what the fastest way is to solve this ?

Problem 2 :

- During migration from disk to tape, I can see (on the display) that the 2
tapedrives are not constantly writing data to
tape, it's always writing for a short period of time, waiting for a longer
period, writing, and so on ...
Is this normal ? Is there anything I can check or do ? Shouldn't the
tapestreamers really stream data from disk ?
I know our situation is not ideal (the whole diskpool is on 1 disk), but
it is on another scsi-bus than the tapestreamers.

Thank you very much in advance (sorry for all my questions, but this is just
my second TSM installation),

 Michael,

To the best of my knowledge, you MUST have a valid
 DB backup tape to
recover. AFAIK, it is not possible to read
 storagepool media without an
 intact database.

If your DB is not intact, and your DB backup tapes
 are no good, I would
recommend that you call TSM support to see if they
 can help you.

 Good luck!

Thank you very much Paul

1) I format the db and log files.
2) Our DB-BACKUP is on ONE TAPE only. Small DB
~10Mb(because all the files are more than 1GB)
3) We make the commit=yes
4) We don't have the VOLUME HISTORY butg we found the
tapes with DSMSERV DISPLAY function.
5) We work according to the Administrator's Guide
6) We tried other tapes from other library. It works
fine.
7) All the DB-BACKUP tapes seems to be corrupted
(how?)

--- Do you know how to recover without the DBBACKUP
with only the DATA TAPES ?

It is difficult to help you. Many of us run V4 of
TSM and do not have the
messages manual for V3. The complete message text
 for the 8337 would be
helpful. It sounds like it is trying to tell you
 how the recovery log will
be handled. Are you sure you have the DEVCONFIG
 setup correctly for a
restore. Did you format the files to receive the
 Database and recovery
logs? Did you follow the Administrator's Guide for
 recovery based on your
 specific scenario?

I am presuming that you do not have the VOLHISTORY
 file to work with. Are
you specifying COMMIT=YES? See the example command
 here.

 dsmserv restore db devclass=8MM
 volumenames=tape01,tape02 commit=yes

Are sure the DBBACKUP is on a single tape, that it
 is not a multi-volume?
Are you positive your DB Backups have been running
 correctly?

I suspect folks are having trouble helping you
 without this information.

Why choose TSM - Publications ?

2002-01-15 Thread Michel David

First thank you Nicholas, Juraj, Sergio, Uwe,Richard
and others if I forgot them.

I need to find any publishments that say that TSM is a
good thing, a good choice, that it has many
advantages, that's it's better than VERITAS etc...

Myself, I don't need to be convinced, it's for our new
boss.

These publishments can be from Tivoli itself. I just
have to documentate our choice of TSM, of Tapes as a
Media, and Qualstar as Library.

I already searched in the TIVOLI press review and did
not find anything like this about TSM.

If someone has already something, it would be great !

Thank you friends.

First you have to disconnect the Service TSM Server.
Use the NT-Services, search for TSM Server and just
press Stop or Open the Web-like Server

Wait for 1 minute. See the Task MAnager that
everything is ok. You can recover !

2002-01-07 Thread Michel David

Hi everybody,
Something strange...

We are currently using 3.7.4 . On NT4.0 sp5
I try to install the ODBC files. According to the
manual (Quick Start and others), In the Client
Options, We choose Change button but their is NOT
their the ODBC drivers ! It's the same for the the
3.7.0 install and for the .4 patch.

Do you have an idea, I use the US - NT with Hebrew
Enable.

Maybe something very easy and I am wrong ?
Thank you.

Re: HELP IN USING API

2001-11-26 Thread Michel David

Which version of TSM do you use.
Which use do you want ? Archive/Backup ?

The use of TSM API is quite complicated but it works
really fine.

I didn't touch the code 2 years ago. We use only
Archive/Retrieve functions(3.7.4) on NT. If you need
info you can 'Reply'.

Please!:A Temp-File COPY POOL Solution

2001-11-20 Thread Michel David

Hi Everybody. Thank you for precedent answers !

I try to to be more understandable !!

 Here's the new problem:
We have a 120GB Disk for pool (like 1 tape capacity)
We would like, each day, to Copy the Archive Pool to
a
FILE POOL on this disk (remote disk).
Parallely we will continue to use a regular tape for
copy pool.

After the Copy Tape is full we'll like to empty the
DISK POOL and to begin to backup on the new tape and
on the Empty Disk every day.

This method has the advantage to save data on a remote
computer (network connected) that can be in another
place every day and ASSURE that we cannot lose more
than ONE day info. Even if the Library Box is burned!

For sure we need to be sure that we can recover from
the DISK POOL the stored info there.

Is there a solution ?
Is there a trick ?

ONE-DAY SAFETY PROBLEM (cont)

2001-11-20 Thread Michel David

Hi Everybody. Thank you , Paul.
Sorry I was not clear enough.

How can user assure that all the data will be
retrieved if the library is physically damaged
(fire...) ?

We'll have only the last version of DBBACKUP and the
OFSSITE POOL. Maybe it's can be one week of work
without BACKUP.
If we don't want to eject a tape every day and store
it in a SAFE place. We have to find someting else.

We have ONE Library and another big HD in another
place.

* One Copy Pool (like everyone) inside the lib (for
the FILLING tape)
* Another Copy Pool (DEVCLASS=FILE) in a network DISK.
(Or any other solution is welcome)

I want to use this small (~) hard-disk of 120 GB to
store only what I am saving on the used filling Tape
of the Copy Pool.

That's all.
I hope I was clear enough

Thank's
Michel

If the remote computer is a TSM server or you have
 SANergy and maybe with
the SAN client you can delete the remote storage
 pool with the discard=yes
and it should get rid of everything. I have not
 tried this in this
scenario. Then redefine the storage pool and
 perform another copy.
However, you are vulnerable for the time it takes to
 redo the copy.

I am not sure why you are not just keeping two copy
 pools (one local and one
remote) in synchronization with the primary.

You would define a file device class on the remote
 system.

Thank you Wanda Karel Richard etc You are all GOD

I use TSM 3.7.4 on NT.

If I wanted to delete some dbb volumes I used del volh
type=dbb todate=

1) For now if I want to delete these FILE DBB, which
instruction fo I have to use ?
The Help on Del Volh is incomplete about the
DEVCLASS=. and the use of this function with the
parameter DEVCLASS returns an error.

2) If I want to restore a damaged DB I have to use
RESTORE DB ? But there is no such function in the
help. What is the exact syntax and how can I use the
FILE-DEVCLASS DBB volumes to do it ?

Thank you TSM'ers

I need know

The Estimated Capacity (MB) of the Volume inspection

Hi everybody

1) I would like to know if there is a possibility to
know what's written on the LCD screen of our QUALSTAR
library. Sometimes there are important info like
"Change the AIR filter" ...
It's a SCSI library.

2) If we shut down the QUALSTAR library, the TSM
doesn't feal it at all ! You can ask the "q dri" and
get that they are all ONLINE you even can try
"AUDIT LIBRARY" !!! and nothing occures.
how can I know that the library is not connected ???

Thank you very much.
