Operational Reporting Question - sending Mails to more than one address

2005-01-17 Thread Stumpf, Joachim
Hi all,

short question ;-)
is it possible to send the failed/missed reports from the Operational Reporting
tool to more than one email-address?
If yes - How can we do this?
We need to send the mails to the node admin and his deputy.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Joe,

at the German Storage Users-Guide in Nuremberg IBM told us last week that 5.3 will be
available in december via ftp and in january via CD.
I think you should call IBM if you are planning to migrate to 5.3 as fast as it will
come out to get a beta version for test.

Good luck ;-)

Does anybody know if TSM 5.3 beta or preview is publicly available.

We received Power Point info on new 5.3 from our IBM contact.
He said it's coming out in December.

InsertSlashHack missing dirDelimter - on W2K node with 5.1.5.9

2004-08-05 Thread Stumpf, Joachim
Hi together,

I searched adsm.org but found no useful help for InsertSlashHack ...

Has anyone seen this error before?

This happens since a few days on a W2K-Node with 5.1.5.9 (TSM-Server 5.2.2.1 on z/OS).

The admin of the W2K Node told us that there is no file Ri... On that
client. Also the Objects ...\SourceSafe\vss_dotnet\data\u are not files - these
objects are directories.

From the dsmerror.log:

Re: Need experiences with TSM 5.2.x upgrade on z/OS

2003-11-13 Thread Stumpf, Joachim
Joe,

at the moment we are migrating from 5.1.6.3 to 5.2.1.1 (straight!).
We had a performance issue which you can fix with a ZAP (APAR PQ80211).
If you upgrade without doing the cleanup backupgroups on 5.1.7.3 (or later) first,
the TSM-Server will do it itself after upgradedb. This process cannot be stopped and
used a lot of CPU (before the ZAP).
Now with the ZAP it ran between 30min and 45min. on our 16GB Databases.
The 5.2.1.1 code seems to be stable but we have the garbage char. problem which will
be fixed in I think 5.2.2!

hope this helps,

We're preparing to upgrade our TSM 5.1.6 server to 5.2.x. We run on z/OS and have
seen the writeup on apar PQ80211. IBM recommends either coming up to TSM 5.1.7.3 and
running CLEANUP BACKUPGROUPS prior to beginning the upgrade to 5.2.x, or upgrading
straight to 5.2.1.3 (which doesn't seem to be available yet - don't you just love
being on the edge?) to get the fix for the apar. There's also a zap available to fix
the problem with CLEANUP BACKUPGROUPS. Has anyone been through this? What seems to
be the cleanest way to deal with this issue?

want to go to 5.2.x but need to figure out what I need to do to get the

I have installed this upgrade to my test server and so far so good !

Anyone performed this update, already ?

Any problems jumping from 5.1.6.4 to 5.1.8.0 ? (yes, I realize an
UPGRADEDB is required !) ? When I upgraded my test server, I jumped from
5.1.6.4 to 5.1.7.0 and then to 5.1.8.0.

Hi,

at the moment we are migrating from 5.1.6.3 to 5.2.1.1.
If you are at 4.x you should have a look at:
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg1PQ80211

We had big problems with the performance during upgradedb (AuditDB run 80h with a 16GB

After the ZAP the Upgradedb took nearly 30min and used 3min. CPU.

So the ZAP mentioned in the ARPAR worked for us.

we go ahead and pull down the latest server level (5.2.1 w/5.2.2 due in

Re: Z/OS and TSM - preferred server level??

2003-11-05 Thread Stumpf, Joachim
Jim,

I didn't recognize that you are at 4.1.
I think theres no problem with the upgrade for you, because the problems we had were
with the systemobjects of windows nodes which were included with 4.2.

Our migrations:
3.7 -- 4.1.3 -- 4.1.5 -- 5.1.0.0 -- 5.1.1.6 -- 5.1.5.0 -- 5.1.5.3 -- 5.1.6.1
--- 5.1.6.3 and now we are migrating to 5.2.1.1
I think our problems with the systemobjects occured somewhere during migration from
4.1.5 to 5.1.6.3.

Thanks, I remember seeing something about this earlier. I wonder if it

Re: Upgrade TSM 5.1.7 to 5.2.0 - how long should upgradedb take?

2003-10-22 Thread Stumpf, Joachim
Hi,

we saw nearly the same on upgrade from 5.1.6.3 to 5.2.1.1 on MVS.
Upgrade went fine, but after start of the server with the new version TSM starts a
process which you cannot see with q proc, uses lots of CPU, doesnt respond to MVS
modify commands and lags with the AdminGUI.
With the help from support we saw that the server starts an cleanup backupgroups after
restart with 5.2.x.x.
This process cannot be cancelled and uses the CPU a lot.
Now we decided to go to 5.1.7.3 to use the cleanup backupgroups by our own (so we are
able to stop this process if we need the CPU for backups/archives).

btw: Take a look at PQ78408: ...ITSM Server V5.2 is modified to detect and correct the
incorrect backup group entries during UPGRADEDB processing...

use this command to determine if your filespace is unicode enabled:

Look if you can find the following line:

If unicode is NO you have to rename your existing filespace and have to backup the
node again (new full backup).
Then it should be unicode enabled.

TSM supports Unicode only for the Windows and Macintosh environments.
The Linux system is pretending to be Windows for the purpose of serving
Windows Shares, as a file server. But as a full-service server it also
somehow needs to back up those files. The only way I see to accommodate
that is code page handling through Samba, per my prior posting.

I was able to delete the filespace.

April 15th is coming up quickly and I have sent my order in to IBM for the
ITSM V5.1.6 server. We will probably 'just do it' and hope for the best
Our test environment is very small so it will not be a great help even
though we will install it there first. Anyone know of anything I should be
aware of? Also, I have seen a list of levels and patches that need to be
installed in order for other ITSM server environments. Mostly, I think, to
clear up the old orphan System Objects problem. Does anyone know where I
might find this list for MVS? The one I saw was at a TSM Users meeting,
someone was going to check if there was a special order of installs for MVS
but I have never heard back from them. I would appreciate any and all
feedback.

Try a show bfo 0 243145. If you'r lucky, this command shows something like:

Storage Pool ID: xx Volume ID: yy Volume Name: 'volume_name'.
If yes, you can try a audit vol 'volume_name' fix=yes.

If not, try a auditdb. (How big is your database?).

And if yes or no, always call your local Support immediatly, these errors

new DB fields in 5152 server?

2002-11-13 Thread Stumpf, Joachim
Hi together,

today I upgraded our TSM-test-server (z/OS) from V5.1.5.1 to V5.1.5.2.
If I perform a SELECT * FROM NODES I see 3 new fields in the

But the TCP_Name and TCP_address are not valid name or address
I only see:

TCP_ADDRESS = îàåîåîê

anyone else has seen this?

Hi Donna,

I followed the link under Self help in hope to get
information about a new ITSM-Server version
on z/OS. But there's *NOTHING*.

I did not found any information about z/OS server updates on 5.1.x.x.
Only w2k, aix, solaris, etc are supported.

I created an PMR at IBM-Germany and asked for the new version (and I got them...)
But why there's *NO* further information about TSM - z/OS updates/patches
on the ITSM website at the moment?

The only thing I found was a z/OS server update/patch to 4.2.x.x

Re: Differences between network transfer rates

2002-08-21 Thread Stumpf, Joachim

Hi Sascha,

we had the same question a few months ago.
The network transfer rate doesnt tell you something about your network speed.
As far as I know the network transfer rate is calculated like this:

All bytes sent from the Node

session time

where the session time is the whole session time (include filespace scans; media wait
times; etc.)

Tivoli told us to look at the aggregated network transfer rate; this is the rate the
client needs to transfer the aggregates to the server...
Tivoli also told us to trace the sessions with the traceflag -perform to see the
performance of the session.

hope this helps ;)

Re: Client Message - size estimate exceeded

2002-04-02 Thread Stumpf, Joachim

Hi Farren,

2 weeks ago I had a pmr open at IBM about this problem.
This happens if the storagepool backuppool runs full during your clients backing up
and you have compressalways yes in your dsm.opt.
I opened the pmr at IBM because I was not sure if the file that the TSM tried to
backup was backuped correct.
And the file was not backed up. The TSM also did not do any retries for this file.
IBM told me that is works as designed.

What do you think?
Should the TSM retry the file?
Because after the error message the rest of the backup went fine.

Heres the pmr:

Re: Client Message - size estimate exceeded

2002-04-02 Thread Stumpf, Joachim

Hi Farren,

I changed compressalways to no.

With compressalways yes it happens like this:
The client sends the estimated filesize to the server. But the file grows up during
compression and is send greater than estimated. The backuppool is 99% full and the
server cant store the file in the backuppool and skips the file WITHOUT any retries.

IBM also told us to enhance the backuppool size or set up a second migration task for
the backuppool.

 Hi Stumpf

I must admit that seeing as TSM does manage to complete the rest of the

 available.

Did you actually change any of your settings to solve the problem?

 Thanks for your reply

 Hi Farren,

2 weeks ago I had a pmr open at IBM about this problem.
This happens if the storagepool backuppool runs full during your clients
backing up and you have compressalways yes in your dsm.opt.
I opened the pmr at IBM because I was not sure if the file that the TSM
tried to backup was backuped correct.
And the file was not backed up. The TSM also did not do any retries for
 this file.
IBM told me that is works as designed.

 What do you think?
Should the TSM retry the file?
Because after the error message the rest of the backup went fine.

Hi Henrik,

thanks for your answer.
But if we start the backup while application has the db allocated, we usually should
get the file in use-message.
Or not?

At the moment we are testing the OSA-Gigabit-Adapter to backup our Nodes ;)
Then the problem with the network should be solved...

Re: question: db-backup

2002-03-20 Thread Stumpf, Joachim

Hi again,

the application is a MS-SQL 6.0 db-server.
At 23:00h started the TSM-backup.
And at 00:30h a person from the db-group tried a update to the db, but the backup was
running.
In this case the Node had a big problem with its RAM (RAM ran full) and our NT-Admin
wanted to know if this was caused by the update of the db during a backup.

Our Nodes usually have a 100Mbit network card and the server is an OS/390
TSM-Server;but we have lots of Nodes, so the transfer rate is very slow...
but this is something else we had analized last summer ;)

 Hi all,

OK - For those of you that does not know anything about
OS/390 or don't run TSM servers on OS/390 this might be
very boring and maybe a bit cryptic - ignore or just
 read for the fun.
Now for the people that still run OS/390 TSM servers:

I have always had my doubts about the scalability of
OS/390 when it comes to a TSM server.
Some of you might have seen me posting last year and early
this year about the size of your TSM environment and if
you are happy with the performance of TSM on OS/390 - only
one guy answered giving me specs on the environment they
run(Thanks to William Colwell), but other than that
most people said they moved off OS/390 and are now
running AIX or Sun or even Win2K servers.
William described their environment as an 80 Mips
processor box and a 166Gig db 88% used - and on top
of all that he has good performance from this.

Our environment is a 38 Gig db 80% used and we have
crappy performance. Now in Adsm V3 a new parameter
was introduced called MPTHREADING YES or NO. What
this does is tell TSM that it can start multiple
TCB's on multiple CP's - if you have multiple CP's
 on your box.
Now we enabled this and noticed that TSM gets its
knickers in a knot when there are too many things
happening and the system is CPU constrained. In
WLM it is guarenteed to get CPU and in WDM you can
see that about 30% of the time it is delayed for
CPU. What we have done now in Omegamon is to check
how many work each of the TCB's does and then try
and figure out why TSM would perform crappy even though
it is getting about 50% of the total box.
Now - here comes the part where development might
be able to shed some light:

The TCB called dsmserv (the server task), has a
lmod caled IEANUC01 that has a CSECT of IGVGPVT
that uses about 90-95% of all the CPU cycles - remember
that this is one TCB assigned to one CP.
On further investigation our IBM'er came back and said
this IGVGPVT part controls getmain/freemain's for TSM.
 Now here comes the question:
How can TSM be using 90% of a CP by just doing getmain/freemain
and all the other TCB's that has a CP allocated just sit
and wait for getmain/freemain's. This looks like a
serious scalability issue with TSM on a multiple
CP environment. According to our performance and MVS
guys the only way we are going to squeeze more juice
out of our OS/390 system with TSM is to split the
workload of TSM and run two TSM servers on one LPAR
or upgrade each CP to a more powerfull CP.
Is this in line with development, and the way it should work?

 Thanks
 Christo Heuer

Hi,

In the end the switches to our HOST (OS/390) were to slow for the traffic.
Since we use the OSA-channel to store to our TSM-Servers in OS/390, the aggregate

Here is my recent sched.log file showing almost 8 hours to process 279,057
 objects.

I'm thinking that someone has some insight on how to Optimize a Windows
client for more efficient nightly backups. Also, there is an error message
about TCP/IP connection failure; which I believe is related to our dsm.opt
configuration due to a time-out condition.

The FS4500 Client is using Windows 2000 Server OS and TSM 3.7.1 Client,
but we will soon upgrade to TSM version 4.2.1 to see if this helps.

Linux backup loops

2002-02-26 Thread Stumpf, Joachim

Hi,

we have a problem with one of our Linux Nodes.

the errorlog looks like:
13.02.2002 11:34:36 fioScanDirEntry(): Object '/home/t04520a/nsmail/.Entwürfe.summary'
contains unrecognized symbols for current locale, skipping...
13.02.2002 11:34:59 fioScanDirEntry(): Object

13.02.2002 11:37:07 Trying port number 56582
13.02.2002 11:37:07 Obtained new port number on which to listen.

And then the client restarts with backup on new port.
But then it crashes at the same file/directory and tries the next port.
This loops until the max sessions parm is reached and continues when a session is
canceled from the server during timeout parms.

The session on the server is still alive and in the end there are many (dead) sessions
from this node:
13.02.2002 11:38:23 fioScanDirEntry(): Object '/home/t04520a/nsmail/.Entwürfe.summary'

We tried to exclude the directory that seems to cause the problem.

the inclexcl-list looks like:
exclude /.../*
exclude.dir /sbin
exclude.dir /home
exclude.dir /opt
include /etc/.../*

But it doesnt work.

Environment:
Server: 4.1.3.0 on OS/390 2.10
Client: 4.2.1.0

Any idea what will help to solve the problem?

Re: How do you pre-config windows dsm.opt file?

2002-02-12 Thread Stumpf, Joachim

the TSM-client connects to your server if you start the ba-client.
So you need a dsm.opt with this values:
NodeName yournode
TCPServeraddress yourserverip/name

I extracted the TSM windows client files tot he TSM_IMAGES directory, and
then placed a dsm.opt file (with JUST a couple parameters like
schedlogretention) in the config directory, which then was successfully
moved over to the baclient directory when the install completed, BUT when
you launch the TSM client for the first time it gives a TCP/IP failure,
until you go through the wizard and complete the rest of the configuration

quiesce the database - possible?

2002-01-25 Thread Stumpf, Joachim

Hi together,

we run TSM-server 4.1.3.0 on OS/390 R2.10.
Now we want to save our TSM-database with dss concurrent copy.
For this its neccesary that on start of the cc-job the
database is not in use (nothing should be changed in the db at this moment)
Usually we have to shut down the running tsm-task and have to wait until the cc-job
has started.
But is there a chance to quiesce the db without stopping the tsm-task?

Is this possible?

Is this some kind of lame attempt at a DOS attack on the list?

Fw: FW: v4.2.1 TSM Clients

2001-10-18 Thread Stumpf, Joachim

I think it's true!

I tested the new client on a W2k machine and I got the same RC you described
below.
If one file fails (e.g. it's in use by another proccess), the schedule
returns with a result code of 4.

I hope Tivoli works on a fix for that.
We have some automatically checking for result code 0 (if there was
a problem while backing up; and I think file in use... isn't a big problem)

 Hi Guys

According to Tivoli Support they have made an alteration to way client
v4.2.1 reports Result code 4 to the server. Earlier version clients would
allow for a certain number of files to fail during the backup and still
report to the server that the Schedule was successful. However version 4.2.1
has been altered so that a result code of failed will be reported to the
server even if 1 file fails during a backup.
ntcmachine had been failing on some WINNT system files which I have added
exceptions for under direction of Tivoli support and now backups of this
 machine seem to be successful.
Bob from Tivoli suggested that if we are worried about seeing failed result
codes on the daily report that there may be a way to generate a report
listing statistics of how many files or how much data had been backed up
from each machine to provide a more accurate picture as to whether the
 backups were successful.

Journal-File-System

2001-09-25 Thread Stumpf, Joachim

Greetings,

Has anybody experience with the TSM-Journal-Filesystem on NT4?
What about the incrthreshold-Parm in the opt-file?

I just read the following in the TSM for Windows Using the Backup-Archive Client
Manual:

When a Windows client deletes a file or directory with a long name,
it sometimes reports this using a compressed name.

Does that mean, the TSM-Journal-DB saves the directories or files
in DOS 8.3 notation?
e.g.: c:\program~1 for c:\programme

Has someone seen any problems with the journal filesystem?

Thanks,

Re: Question on TSM 4.1.3.0 for MVS and OS390

Hi David,

we have one Test-Server running with 4.1.3.0 on OS/390 2.10 and we have no problems.
I think we will upgrade our other servers soon.

But is it right, that unicode enabled filesystem are not realized in 4.1?
I read something in TSM for Windows using the backup-archive client Version 4 Release
2
on page 4 that the server needs to be at 4.2 level.
But the highest OS/390-Server-level is 4.1.3.0?!?!

Does anybody have experience how to store with enabled unicodefiles?

DB-Reorg on OS/390

2001-07-19 Thread Stumpf, Joachim

Hi together,

does anybody have experience in reorganising a TSM Database on OS/390-Server (2.10)?

We have 8 DB-Volumes Model-2 and there is only 47% used by the database.
We would like to reduce the database.
As you can see its only possible to reduce up to 220MB.
Our Level is 3.7.4.0, but an upgrade to 4.1.3.0 is possible.

Do you have any experience how long a reorg inclusive audit runs on OS/390 (2.10)?
Is there something to consider before reorganising?

Output of Q DB command:
