Upgrade IBM 3584 LTO-1 to LTO-3 drives

2006-08-27 Thread Zosimo Noriega
Hi Sir,

Please help me regarding my inquiries.
Is it possible to upgrade IBM 3584 with existing 6 LTO-1 tape drives
into 6 LTO-3 tape drives?
What consideration may required?

We have AIX 5.1 (p610 server) with TSM 5.1 server. Tape Library: IBM
3584 UltraScalable Tape Library with 6 FC drives 254 slots.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Zosimo

A very important question you need to answer is:

Are you are running Data Protection for SQL
backups using multiple stripes?

If you are, then you need to keep the data on separate tapes.
That is because during restore, you will also be using
striping and therefore those tapes will be mounted at
the same time and data will be read from those tapes
simultaneously.

The Data Protection for SQL User's Guide discusses
this under sections called Data Striping Values
and Using Collocation.

Thanks,

Del

Is it actually in the library?

Somebody may have removed it (by opening the library and taking it out) -
they didnt use the TSM commands to check it out, nor perform an AUDIT

Subject: Re: Device Class

Possible reasons can include:

1. Using a different (maybe offsite?) library for your offsite volumes
2. EstCapacity - if you're using generictape, the capacity of the volume
grows as it puts more data on it. If you send a volume offsite, it could
only have 3GB and it wouldn't come back until it hits your reclamation %.
You'd be wasting 37GB of that volume. If that matters to you. So, if you
have a reason for a low estcapacity onsite and a high estcapacity offsite,
then that could do it.
3. If you want to shape mountlimit for onsite vs. offsite volumes in your
library.
4. Sometimes you may want a longer mount retention for your onsite volumes
and a lower mount retention for offsite volumes because copypool volumes
only get mounted during reclamation and backup stg whereas primary onsite
stgpool volumes are used much more often.

But personally, I use the same devclass for both onsite primary and offsite
copy stgpools.

Subject: Re: TDP 4 MSSQL restore

 Vladimir,

 Yes. I know what the problem is.

 There is a known situation that you must handle
 when restoring very large SQL databases.

 Basically, this is what happens:

 1. The database is started to be restored.
A small amount of data is restored from the TSM Server.

 2. The SQL server looks at that data and sets up the database
according to the information that it finds in first part
of the backup data. The SQL Server preformats the files.
If the database is large... the preformatting and initialization
of the files could take a long time. The SQL Server is spending
most of the time preformatting the files.

 3. After the SQL Server is done preformatting the files,
it continues restoring the rest of the data.

 The SQL Server is still working to preformat the files
 when the COMMTIMEOUT on the server times out and cancels
 the operation.

 The way to get around this issue is to increase the
 COMMTIMEOUT value to something very large.
 It needs to be large enough to allow the SQL Server
 to finish preformatting the files.

 Increase the COMMTIMEOUT to something very large
 (like 5 hours which is 18000 seconds)

 then... retry the restore.

 This is known issue and there is a requirement opened
 against the TSM Server to allow COMMTIMEOUT
 to be set on a NODENAME basis... since you don't
 normally want to set COMMTIMEOUT that large
 for all nodes.

 By the way, it is also documented in the IBM Support Solutions
 Database under reference # 1079494.

 Thanks,

 Del

hi daniel,

currently we're using ADSM 3.1 and IBM 3494 TL, we're planning to upgrade or
change the backup tape library solution, so, we're still evaluating the
solution. we selected 3 backup solutions from the list (TSM, LEGATO,
VERITAS)with there own proposed tape library. Since, we have that disk
spaces available (3.7TB) with 80% utilised, we want to calculate the
required TL capacity. If we selected TSM what is the required capacity for
TL if we implemented 4 versions of archive 3 versions of incremental
backups.

Hi

It sounds like you're going to use a full backup software such as Legato.
However, I will do my estimates based on TSM, which uses incremental
backups, and version management to be able to do point-in-time restores of
files(older version of a file than the latest) and applications.

I'd probably propose a IBM 3584 Anaconda with at least 3 drives, preferable
fibre attached.

I guess that you are going to use TSM with this library. Therefore, you
will probably not use full backups, but incremental. And, on fileservers, I
recommend using more than 3 versions(which is standard within TSM). This
will grow your total storage by the number of versions you want to use.

It' very hard to calculate total storage requirements, when you don't tell
us what kind of data that is going to be kept in the library(SQL databases,
fileservers and so on).

However, you can count with about 10% change every night on a fileserver,
and, if not to large, use full backups of databases.

I'd say you'll be storing about 10TB total, and preferable, have media
protection using copypools, which means another 10TB.

If non-support from the vendor, lack of system object and unicode

subfile differencing and journaling are not issues of importance for
you, I have seen no problem (using client v3.1.0.8 or 4.2.1.18) on a
V3.1 server. I do however wish for a summary table and a serviceable
server.

If you mean V3.1 client, then I'd be less positive (that was
positive?). The V4.2.1.18 client scheduler seems more reliable (the
V3.1 scheduler was prone to permanent sleep when the network blipped or
backup server was restarted) and many find the restore functions easier
to use than with the older client.

(We're not a big Windows client user, but have a few servers and a few
dozen workstations, mostly NT and 2000). Hope this helps, wayne

Re: Open file for TSM

We can install SQL server but the problem is the configuration can be
different from the original. we looking forward if the base backup/archive

we can able to restore completely, then, restore using TDP of SQL the latest
backup of database/transaction logs.

is it possible? thanks

Zosimo,

TDP for SQL protects the database files and their transaction logs only.
It does not protect the SQL Server application files.
The base backup/archive client can be used to protect those files.
In the event of a disaster, where the SQL Server application is
corrupted, you can re-install SQL Server, and then restore your
databases via TDP for SQL.

Subject: Re: Open file for TSM

There are two variants on open file issues that are pertinent to TSM:

1) The file is open by an application, but is available for read access
by other applications (such as TSM). Regardless of the TSM copy group
serialization setting, TSM can back up these files. The serialization
setting affects how TSM handles cases where the file has changed in the
middle of backing up the file. STATIC and SHRSTATIC will not store a
backup copy on the TSM server if the file changed in the middle of the
backup. DYNAMIC and SHRDYNAMIC will allow a backup copy of the file to be
stored on the TSM server even if the file has changed in the middle of the
backup.

When the file has changed in the middle of the backup, then the backup
copy is often called a fuzzy backup. Thus DYNAMIC and SHRDYNAMIC will
permit fuzzy backups to be stored on the TSM server.

Consider: A fuzzy backup means that the file was in one state when the
backup started, but in another state by the time the backup finished. As a
result, the backup copy may represent an inconsistent state for the file.
For certain files, such as message logs that gets appended with new
messages on a regular basis, a fuzzy backup may not be a problem. For
other files, such as databases, a fuzzy backup could be useless since a
restore of this backup would yield an inconsistent database.

Therefore, DYNAMIC or SHRDYNAMIC should be used with caution, and only for
those cases where you KNOW that restore of a fuzzy backup will result in a
usable file. For any file that you are unsure of, consult the owner of the
file or the vendor whose application uses that file to determine the
backup requirements.

St. Bernard's Open File Manager can eliminate fuzzy backup issues
because it not only permits access to locked files (see #2 below), but
it also presents a consistent image of the file to TSM. That is, even if
the file changes during the backup, Open File Manager presents TSM with
the unchanged version of the file, so a consistent backup is always taken.

2) The file is open by an application for exclusive use, and is therefore
unavailable for read access by any other application (i.e. the file is
locked). TSM can not back up files that are locked by another
application unless a product to manage open files (such as St. Bernard
Software's Open File Manager) is used. If someone told you otherwise,
then they are wrong: TSM can not open locked files without Open File
Manager (or similar product) regardless of the serialization setting.

Whether you require Open File Manager depends on your situation. In some
cases, you can use the TSM PRESCHEDULECMD option to shut down applications
that locks certain files before the backup starts. After the backup is
complete, you can use the TSM POSTSCHEDULECMD option to restart the
applications that lock the files.

In other cases, you may not care if TSM can back up the file. One trivial
example is the Windows pagefile.sys file. With a product like Open File
Manager, you could back up pagefile.sys. However, there is no point in
doing so since there is never any need to restore pagefile.sys.

As to whether you need a product like Open File Manager... well, there is
no simple yes or no answer. Most customers run TSM successfully
without Open File Manager. You should evaluate your particular situation,
i.e. use SHRSTATIC serialization, then see which files can not be backed
up because they changed during backup, or were locked. Review these
exceptions and evaluate your options for handling them. For some files,
you may not care whether they get backed up. For files that changed during
backup, determine whether DYNAMIC or SHRDYNAMIC would be appropriate, or
whether you can shut down the application that uses the files before
running the backup. For files that are locked but need backup, determine
whether you can shut down the application that uses the files before
running the backup. In the case of mission critical files for which none
of these options is viable, you may need to consider using Open File
Manager.

like

dsmc selective /documentum/ /oracle7/

However, I realise when I do it, it doesn't quite seem to back up the
directories below that of these 2 directories? I have read through the
selective help under dsmc, and it says when you put a slash after the
directory, it would back up the file system for that directory. When I run
the script manually, this is what I get.

From what I understand, directories below the /documentum and
/oracle7 are not backed up? How is it possible for me to backup the entire
directory then, i.e to do a recursive directory backup of these 2
directories?

Many Thanks in Advance.

SQL server recovery.

2001-05-20 Thread Zosimo Noriega (ADNOC IST)

I have node with SQL server installed. The AdsmConnect agent is installed
to backup the database and Adsm b/a client is installed to backup the
related files. Since Adsm b/a client could not backup the files such as the
online datafiles of SQL database. The recovery procedures of this node is
very long process in case of disaster, we need to install SQL engine and
configure then recover from database backup done be the agent.

Do you have any idea how to recover this node without installing the SQL
engine just restore the SQL datafiles and from the backup of the database?

How do you do in your site?

Any help from you is really appreciated.

Re: How to assign management class to an archive backup

Yap, it can specify this option from the archive schedule, select Operations
and add it to the overriding client options.

Actually I don't think that is a valid option in the options file. Could be
wrong. I believe you can only specify it when you perform
the archive.

What is size of ADSM database and log?

2001-04-09 Thread Zosimo Noriega (ADNOC IST)

Hi All,

What is the size of the ADSM database and log to be required if you have 100
clients (75 NT and 25 Unix) with estimated disk space 3 TB.
Estimated 70 percent of that size is being backup and 40 percent of that
size is being archive.
For backup: 5 version plus 1 full backup of active files and 1 version of
the deleted files (expiration period 60 days). The estimated changes per
day is 8 percent.
For archive: 4 version of weekly archive with retention period 1 month, 1
monthly archive with retention perion 1 year.
For hsm: one unix machine with 150 GB.

Anybody can provide me an estimate size of the db and log.

Proposed ADSM/TSM configurations

2001-03-24 Thread Zosimo Noriega (ADNOC IST)

Hello All,

Please provide me your suggestions and comments regarding my proposed
configurations.  Please help me.

I am planning to upgrade Adsm server both hardware and software due to
tremedous increase of a heterogeneous clients and the to upgrade ADSM
software into a latest version. The estimated clients are about 90 nodes
for Windows platforms (NT/2000) with estimated capacity 1350GB and 30 nodes
for Unix platforms with estimated disk capacity 2500 GB.

We facing a lot of problems from the existing environment, so, we decided to
upgrade the system. Please help me if my proposed configurations is fit
enough to meet the objectives.

But here first the details of a current configurations:

Hardware:
*   Compact Proliant 5500 (2 CPU, 256 RAM, 80 HD, 4 SCSI controllers)
*   Tape library ibm 3494/L10 with 4 drives (3590/B1A) and 2 drives
(3490/C2A)
Note:
The 4 drives (3590) were currently being used by the system
and the
other 2 drives (3490) is setting idle in the ATLS. The
ATLS with capacity of 2000 tapes

Software:
*   OS - NT4, SP5
*   Adsm server (3.1.0.2.40)

Adsm server configurations:
*   Db size = 15GB
*   Log size = 1GB
*   Backup disk storage = 20GB
*   Archive disk storage= 20GB
* Two primary tape storage pools for backup and archive with 500 tapes
each.
* The tapes size in ATLS is 25GB
Note: We performed archive for selected server only to avoid running
outspace of the database. The offsite copy (copy storage pool) and HSM are
not implemented.

=

My proposed configurations is to provide two servers, one for Windows and
one for UNIX platforms. The ideas are to improve the performance and
productivity, to separate the adsm processes (windows and unix), to
implement the offsite backup, HSM for unix platforms, etc.

Here are the details of proposed configurations:

For Windows Platforms (with 90 clients with estimated disk space 1350GB):

Hardware:
*   Compact Proliant 5500 (2 CPU, 512 RAM, 70HD with Raid Support, 2
SCSI controllers, 30 size DLT tape)
* Utilized the two drives (3490/C2A) that are currently idle in the
ATLS

Software:
*   OS = Windows NT/2000
* *SM (latest version compliant to Windows 2000 platform)

Adsm/TSM Server Configurations:
*   Db size = 20GB
*   Log size = 2GB
*   Backup disk storage pool = 20GB
*   Archive disk storage pool = 20GB
* Two primary storage pools for backup and archive with 200 tapes each
(25GB size each tape)
* Two copy storage pools for offsite backup
* Backup version (7 versions and 1 version for the deleted files) and
we keep 60 days.
* Archive (weekly (1 month retention), monthly (1 year retention) and
yearly with 60% of estimated disk space)

For UNIX Platforms (with 30 clients with estimated disk space 2500GB):

Hardware:
*   Compact Proliant 5500 (2 CPU, 512 RAM, 70HD with Raid Support, 4
SCSI controllers, 30 size DLT tape)
* Utilized the four drives (3590/B1A) in ATLS 3494 that are currently
used by ADSM server.

Software:
*   OS = Windows NT/2000
*   *SM (latest version)

*SM Server Configurations:
*   Db size = 30GB
*   Log size = 4GB
*   Backup disk storage pool = 20GB
*   Archive disk storage pool = 20GB
* HSM (space migration) disk storage pool = 30GB
* Three primary tape storage pools for backup, archive, and space
migration with 200 tapes each (25GB size each tape)
* Three copy storage pools for offsite backup
* Backup version (7 versions and 1 version for the deleted files) and
we keep 60 days.
* Archive (weekly (1 month retention), monthly (1 year retention) and
yearly with 60% of estimated disk space)

Thanks a lot in advance.
