SANErgy AIX question

2011-01-03 Thread Robert Venyige

Hello,

Does anyone have expirence with Tivoli SANErgy filesharing?
I would like to use it for TSM FILE deviceclasses.

The SANErgy MDC would be an AIX 6.1 (the TSM server), another AIX 6.1
would be the client. I set up the NFS server on MDC, the LUN (on which
the NFS-exported filesystem resides) can be seen on the client too, the
owner is set on the MDC and can be seen on the client correctly.

NFS mount is OK from the client, the problem is, when I fuse the volume,
it is succesful, but the files can't be read or written. The file entry
creates succesfully (0 byte long).
I think, fs/NFS permissions are OK, because these operations work
without SANErgy fusing.

mount on the client:
(...)

# /usr/SANergy/SANergyconfig fuse /sanfs

# /usr/SANergy/SANergyconfig fuse

# echo --- /sanfs/aaa
There is an input or output error.
ksh: /sanfs/aaa: 0403-005 Cannot create the specified file.
# ls -l /sanfs/aaa
-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody system 0 Jan 03 21:20 /sanfs/aaa
# cat /sanfs/test
cat: 0652-050 Cannot open /sanfs/test.

The same issue with SANErgy perf tool.

The documentations are a bit old (A Practical Guide to Tivoli SANErgy
was written in 2001, the Admin Guide (for v3.2) in 2002...), some
commands do not exist in the documented format...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!
Robert

I believe GPFS is recommended over SANergy from IBM for this type of thing
nowadays. At least that's what they were pushing at the last symposium

AIX question

2009-07-09 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi Everyone,
This is more a AIX question then a TSM question.
But I wonder if their is any command such
cat /proc/scsi/scsi in AIX
or cat /var/log/messages |grep -i LTO

The reason why I'm asking is beause one of my tape drives it totally gone from
the AIX environment.
I run cfgmgr -v to auto-detect it and then when I run lsdev -Cc tape I did see
all drives but one of the RMT was in Defind mode or something similar.
So I try to remove the RMTx Device node and run cfgmgr -v again but now can't I
find it anymore.

I have try to remove all my Device Nodes for Tape and Library and reintall the
drivers but still. I don't see my drive anymore.
If I run q san I don't see it in TSM either.

Any suggestions what's going on?
I'm going to see if I can get access to the SAN Switch and the library (TS3500)
via IP. But so far I don't have any access so everything that can help me in
AIX to be 100% sure it is a Switch or Library problem should help.

I look in errpt also and I see a Adapter Problem but I can't see what it is.
Any good switches to get a better explanation of a error in errpt?

Re: AIX question

2009-07-09 Thread Richard van Denzel
Hi Christian,

On AIX you can indeed use lsdev -Cctape to see your tape devices.
My best guess to what you describe is that the path from the drive to
the host is failing. So have a look a the library and all SAN components
to see if you can see the drive there.

Also is your TSM server a standalone machine (e.g. Full SMP or separate
box) or is it an LPAR. If it's an LPAR does it use a VIO Server?
What version of AIX and (Atape) drivers are on the TSM Server?

Met vriendelijke groet, with kind regards,
Richard van Denzel

Re: AIX question

2009-07-09 Thread Steven Langdale
Sounds like AIX has lost the drive, so duff drive, zoning etc...

You could do a cfgmgr -vl (name of fcs port the tape is down) to do a
quicker cfgmgr.

errpt -a will give you more info.

Have we got multiple drives down the same HBA? i.e. is the hba cable
good?

Off topic AIX question

2005-12-22 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.
Sorry for the off topic question but since a lot of folks use AIX I have a
question. I was wondering if someone knows what log type files might be
growing on /usr that I can delete or prune to free up some space. Since this

there other files elsewhere that would also need attention?

Start at /usr executing the command 'du -s * | sort -n'. Go into each
directory that seems larger than it should and execute the command again
until you find the files.

 Hi all,

This may be a little off topic as it relates to TSM specifically but I do
have a reason for asking. I'd like to see how the TSM server is running
during different periods of processing. With that said..

I was wondering if anyone has a favorite GUI tool that can be run locally
or
remotely, on an AIX computer running 5.1 or 5.2, that can show the health
or
usage of the computer resources. Tools like topas are nice but I would
like
to see a graphical interpretation of these types of things if possible.

It would be nice if it was a free tool, but it does not have to be.

From http://bb4.com/ select 'support' (http://bb4.com/support.html) and then
'Enhancements and Plugins' (http://www.deadcat.net/) then search on 'larrd'.
Here's the short-form writeup:

Create graphs of the information that BB collects so that you can see the
trend of disk space usage or CPU utilisation etc etc. NB: this package
requires Tobi Oetiker RRDTOOL
http://ee-staff.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/rrdtool/, perl and the rrd perl
module. Check larrd.packetpushers.com or BB Community Doco for more
information. This is an update to larrd-0.42 (backwards compatible).
OS: UNIX Other

I think it took me about three days to get everything tied together once I
got started. I get 4 graphs (last 48 hours, last 12 days, last 48 days, and
last 576 days) for cpu load, tcp/ip connection times, cpu utilization
(system, user, wait, and idle states) and system call activity. The 576 day
chart shows my SAP DB server has gone from roughly 10% system state to 17%
system state over the last 18 months as workload has picked up; the 48-hour
chart shows me that my TSM backup (gotta get back on topic somehow :-) runs
for 2.5 hours at 50% system, 25% user and 15% wait (on a 4-way 660-6M1 -
ouch!).

Subject: AIX question (off topic possibly)

Hi all,

This may be a little off topic as it relates to TSM specifically but I do
have a reason for asking. I'd like to see how the TSM server is running
during different periods of processing. With that said..

I was wondering if anyone has a favorite GUI tool that can be run locally or
remotely, on an AIX computer running 5.1 or 5.2, that can show the health or
usage of the computer resources. Tools like topas are nice but I would like
to see a graphical interpretation of these types of things if possible.

It would be nice if it was a free tool, but it does not have to be.

Thanks,

Re: AIX Question

2003-09-10 Thread Crawford, Lindy
Hi TSMers,

Miles, the answer to your question is the same reason, that Rene has given,
it more for splitting traffic but in our case we have put the application
traffic on the normal 10/100mb card and the backup traffic on the gigabit
card.

Thanks again guys for all your answers, it has definately come in handy.

One last question, when I backup data on the gigabit card it backups up 1gb
per minute and my restores are 1gb per 5 minutes... do any of you guys have
an idea as to how I can improve the restore ratePlease note that we do
not have a san and this is why we have opted to go for the two lans..

Thanks again in advance for all your help.

Regards.

Lindy

in fact this what we do here, except we have more than one gbit adapter on

Hi there,

I have a related question: what is the benefit to using two interfaces? Why
not just use the gigabit card, for all TSM traffic? Is it better to keep the
high-speed backups on the giga bit interface and keep the scheduler traffic
on its own? It seems like a lot of extra work and confusion.

Consequently, I have a very similar setup, and I'm always interested in ways
to make the backups run faster.

Thanks Miles

Hi there,

I guess you already got the right answer from Rene. Just add another entry
to dsm.sys with tcpserveraddress pointing to the ip address of the GB card.
The scheduler will be started with the default entry and handle connections
through the 10/100MBit network while you will need to start your backup
client either with the option -se=gbit_address or with using an
alternative dsm.opt file employing the -optfile=dsm_gbit_address.opt
option. Also, do not forget to define or modify your schedules
appropriately by setting the option field for the relevant schedules to one
of the above.

2003-09-08 Thread PINNI, BALANAND (SBCSI)
Lindy,

This is what exactly I have done in my case at my work place. You need to
tune network settings too!
Yes we can specify second host name address for second Giga Card. What I
have seen is while using smitty for N/W configuration it somehow does not
allow to have same Hostname for two NIC Cards.
At the same time /etc/hosts gets updated with same host name for two ips.

This is what you can do .You can create DNS entry any how for the server
.And edit /etc/hosts accordingly. Use ifconfig to change hostname on second
card. Still if you problem e mail me directly.

Thanks

Hi,

I have NFS on Netapp Filer that is Local (network or private) NFS on Cisco
SWITCH .I had on EMC previously, But to bring down the cost this was a
better solution .You can share binaries too.

Hope it helps to explain.

But if you have GB as network both for storage and Applications that's fine
but what is your Back bone that is running network on it also should be 1GB
else you will not see the benefit.

Re: AIX Question

2003-09-08 Thread Lars Bebensee
Hi,

this is actually a good and valid question. Since I am a strong believer of
KISS I actually do not see any obvious reason for separating the traffic
even though TSM makes it possible to do so. The only reason I would figure
is that the traffic should flow via two separate subnets with different
requirements but thats network infrastructure so Lindy will have to answer
this question.

AIX question ( du and df )

2003-07-09 Thread rachida Ouaraini
Hi all and thanks in advance for your answers.

My filesystem /var grow up rapidly and anormally and when I execute the command :
du -sk /var the result
is : 29653 ( ~ 29 M )

But when I execute the command df -kP , I find the result bellow :

Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/hd9var 262144138940 12320454%/var

It means thant about 138 M are used from /var but du -sk
gives only ~29 M, I don't know where is the difference (138.94 M - 29 M = 109.94 M) !!

Thank you

Hey, this is ADSM-L, not AIX-L! ;-)
Certainly a big difference between df and du is that df is looking at
the file system as a whole whereas du is running through directories
accumulating file statistics. Files come and go as du is running.
It is also the case that files can be open and have no directory entry,
thus using a lot of invisible space. Get ahold of the freebee 'lsof'
command to report open files: it's an invaluable aid.

Re: AIX question

2003-01-07 Thread Todd Lundstedt
Becky (and Justin from another post),
Both of you suggest that I first delete the offending disks... yet that is
my exact problem. I can't delete them. When I try to rmdev them, I get
an error indicating that there is not enough information to uniquely
identify the device (rmdev -l 'hdisk2' -d ... but there are two hdisk2
devices). I was looking for a way to delete them other than rmdev.

The AIX guru in our shop finally came up with something he remembered from
his classes... odmget and odmdelete commands. They appear to allow one to
more uniquely identify a single object, more so than rmdev. Are there
any gotchas to consider while using odmget and odmdelete?

Delete the two hdisk again. Run cfgmgr again. Check it and if you see the
same type of pattern of 1 vpath showing 4 and the other 2 showing only one
then the shark guy needs to recheck his configuration. If you see a
different pattern try running cfgmgr again. There was a problem awhile
back
that you need to run cfgmgr x's with x being the number of paths so that
you
would get all of the paths. Sometimes we have had to delete and run cfgmgr
again because it doesn't seem to work right the first time. After delete
and rerunning cfgmgr it seems to work better. Something you might want to
get your hands on is the Shark Gotcha's document. I think it is still on
the storage page but if not email me off list and I will send it to you.
Another issue you might run into is that the devices may not be fully
formatted. There was a version of the shark code that said that everything
was formatted yet it wasn't. The only way you could tell was to go into
the
shark under where you configure paths and refresh the screen.

good luck and let me know if I can be of further assistance

First, let me say..
Dear Lord, the IBM web pages are a pain to dig through and find what you
are looking for. Couldn't find any knowledge bases or anything to help me
resolve the issue I have... so.. here goes.

My TSM server is a pSeries with two Fibre Channel Adapters installed,

We have been trying to add some additional Shark storage to the TSM server.
After the Shark guy did his thing, I ran cfgmgr, and thinks didn't look
quite right. The two old vpath devices each showed four disks (hdsikX),
two on each of the two fibre cards (fscsi1, fscsi0), just like they always
have. One of the three new vpath devices showed four hdisks on two
different fscsi devices, but the other two vpath devices only showed
two hdisks, one on each fscsi.

lscfg showed a bunch of new disks, mostly available, but four were
defined. I decided to delete the three new vpath devices, and all of
the associated hdisk devices, including the defined ones. As I got to
looking, I saw something odd...

The ODM is your last resort. I agree. I would try taking the definitions
out of all of the classes of the ODM for those disks and then run cfgmgr
again or reboot even, to see what happens.

# rmdev -dl hdisk#

if that doesn't work then make sure the fibre channel adapter that only has
those two disks on it and remove that with the -R option:

# rmdev -R fibre_channel_adapter

This will remove all child devices attached to the specified fibre card
adapter.

2002-07-12 Thread Lars Bebensee

Hi,

look at your if condition. You should test for something there like if [
-x /bin/mksysb ]; then
The same applies to the savevg script. What tape drive do you use? I would
check that one before disabling software compression.

That's a shell issue, not necessarily an AIX issue. The problem is that
the shell is responsible for expanding the commandline parameters. Thus
typing *, the shell expands that to ALL the file that match (i.e. all of
them).

For instances like this, there are probably more ways than I have
fingers, but genrally one that will always work is using find. e.g.

find dir -name '*' -exec rm {} \;

Re: AIX Question!

2002-07-10 Thread Kai Hintze

Just be aware that find will also go down subdirectories, so if you have
files with similar names in lower levels that you want to keep you have to
find another way. If there are no subdirs, or if the subdirs don't have
similar names then find works great.

Someone mentioned xargs. xargs works great and was faster in a test I saw
(but we are only talking fractions of a second per 1000 files :).

Another way is to ls filespec delthem. Then edit delthem and put rm in
front of every line. (Hint: in vi use :%s/^/rm /). This gives you very fine
control, but is slowest.

There are perl scripts (and I'm sure REXX, python, etc) that wrap around rm
and read the directory to handle large directories.

I could go on, but

Have fun!
Kai.

More of an AIX question

2002-04-24 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.

I'm doing a little cleanup of some things and I need to move 2 physical
disks, hdisk4 and hdisk20, from one volume group to another. Hdisk20 has
nothing on it any longer, hdisk4 has 1 PP assigned as a loglv02 jfslog. I
need to re-assign them in a different volumegroup and can't seem to find how
to do that.

They are not mounted, except it seems the jfslog. Any help on getting these
moved from one vg to another would be appreciated. I need to use them to add
database space and mirror it.

2002-04-24 Thread David Longo

I won't cover all the fine details here, email me directly if need help
with AIX SMIT but here's quick details. You don't reassign, you delete
from one VG then add to another.

First do an lspv command at AIX prompt and see if these two disks
are part of a Volume Group - hdisk4 most likely is. If not a part of
a VG then assign to one. For hdisk4, you need to make sure the jfslog
is mirrored to another disk before you remove - unless this is the
only disk in this VG -in that case delete VG. After mirroring jfslog
then delete the lvcopy on this disk, then remove disk from
Volume Group. (fastpath = smit vgsc).

I would see if I have any file system with 1pp size free what ever is the
size.I will copy all data there under that
directory since u have very small data .Make sure copy -p with -r option
.Check all is copied well.
Now reducevg and remodisks from vg .Now create the vg u need to create and
create lv and filesystem and do what u want.

U can reduce vg by removing disk that does not have anything on it after
umount the filesystems AND deleting them.
Using one disk create vg lv and file system .Copy from one file system to
another.

TSM on AIX question.

2001-09-19 Thread Brian L. Nick

Good morning everyone.

I have been asked to look into possibly moving our TSM 4.1.3 server on
OS/390 to an AIX box. I would appreciate any information that you can
provide. Here is our existing OS/390 TSM server set up.

TSM 4.1.3 on OS/390 2.10 backing up the following clients AIX, NT, Novell,
Win95, Win98, OS/2 (no not a misprint), OS/390 USS and SunSolaris. We are
moving about 280GB over night and we then execute the storage pool copies,
expiration and reclamation during the day. Some of our Domino clients (no
we are not using TDP) take about 20 - 23 hours to backup. The TSM data base
is currently 37.5GB and running at 78% utilization. Our primary storage
pools are 70GB, 13GB, 5GB and 1GB. We have 8 STK 9840 cartridge drives in a
Powderhorn Silo and are using RMM to manage tapes and are running
migrations at night along with the backups. I know that it would be faster
to stage everything to DASD and then migrate to tape but I do not have the
DASD capacity to accomplish this..

My question is how large would my AIX box need to be to accomplish these
same backups more efficiently?

 Any input is appreciated.

 Thanks,

Re: TSM on AIX question.

2001-09-19 Thread Miles Purdy

I'll take a 'best guess'...

The area where you should concentrate more resources is on the I/O capacity of the
server. It looks like you have six (database, log and four disk storage pools)
'chunks' of disk to configure, not to mention the adapters to connect to the STK and
the ethernet adapters. First count the number of adapters that you have/need. I would
think you have at least two of each. Do you prefer SCSI or SSA disks? RAID levels make
a big difference in performance.

Next find a AIX server with at least as many PCI slots as adapters you need, watch out
for the number of 64 bit slots (if you have 64-bit adapters) and look at the number of
buses with the box.

I currently use a Silver Node (in an SP) for my TSM server (this is the same as an H50
or F50). It has 4 CPU's and 2 GB of memory, it works well, but our environment is a
little smaller. It has 3 SCSI, 1 SSA, 3 ethernet, 1 Switch adapters.

I would like to upgrade it, when I do I plan to go to a 6H1. For you I wouldn't go
with anything smaller. The M80 is good choice and if you really want performance a 680
is at the top of the scale. I know of one shop that uses a S70 for ONLY their TSM
server. But like I said focus on the I/O.

One thing you need to be aware of is that if you are going to be sharing the STK

Re: TSM on AIX question.

2001-09-19 Thread Bandu Vibhute (GWB)

Brian,

If you considering just migration from OS/390 to AIX box, then you need same
resources but if you want new platform to cut backup and restore times then
you need more communication channels from server to library and faster DASD
storage. If you design 4 channels(FC/SCSI) from server to library for 8
drives you backups will be more faster. For future growth TSM database(50
Gig mirrored) and disk pool( 300 Gig RAID-5) should be of more capacity. I
think 2 processor(500MHz), 2 Gig RAM, Gigabit network for backup is good
point to start. You need to put additional network adapter in heavily used
server and design backup network.

Re: TSM on AIX question.

2001-09-19 Thread Prather, Wanda

I think Miles gave a great answer, that is just the approach I would take.

We are currently running 500 clients on a dedicated F50, 2 processors, 1 GB
memory, 4 STK 9840 tape drives in an STK 9710 robot. TSM is at 4.1.3
2 network adapters, one GB ethernet, one 100MB ethermet.

Clients are primarly Win2K WinNT; some Win95, Win98, AIX, OS/2, MAC.
We back up about 140 GB a day; 10 GB is from one data base, the rest is all
small stuff.
The small stuff actually has more impact on your server than big chunks of
data from data bases.
Total storage is 5 TB on site, 5 TB offsite.

The DB is 30 GB, 82% full. Currently have 2 buses for the 9840's.
When the load was smaller I had the DB on RAID; had to give that up to get
more speed and go to physical mirrors.
Disk is some SCSI-RAID in an external RAID cabinet (slow, used only for
storage pool), SSA disk, internal Ultra SCSI disk - essentially anything I
can get my hands on, spread across 4 adapters. Total of 130 GB in the disk
storage pool.

The good news - as a former mainframe storage and performance person, I can
tell you that you will be very pleased with the performance you get out of
AIX - I don't think you will have any problem at all, the I/O just screams.
TSM isn't actually very CPU-intensive when it comes to backups. Our F50 is
just cruising along most of the time. We're getting a bit tight on time
schedules, but the problem is reclaims, and expiration, not backups
themselves. Again this is because we do 130 GB of small files every day.
If I had a bigger robot, and could reclaim less often, there would be no
issue at all.

Miles is right I think, in that for a system your size you should be
concerned about I/O more than anything. More good news - you will be able
to afford a lot more disk on an AIX box. Our last buy was for 3 - 18 GB
drives, less than $5K.

Remember that, just like on OS/390, bigger drives aren't necessarily always
better- make sure you buy enough disks (not just enough space) to
physically mirror your DB (preferably across different adapters). Make sure
the RS6000 you buy is expandable so you can add adapters, as well as disk,
if you need to spread your I/O some more.

Good luck!

I'll take a 'best guess'...

The area where you should concentrate more resources is on the I/O capacity
of the server. It looks like you have six (database, log and four disk
storage pools) 'chunks' of disk to configure, not to mention the adapters to
connect to the STK and the ethernet adapters. First count the number of
adapters that you have/need. I would think you have at least two of each. Do
you prefer SCSI or SSA disks? RAID levels make a big difference in
performance.

Next find a AIX server with at least as many PCI slots as adapters you need,
watch out for the number of 64 bit slots (if you have 64-bit adapters) and
look at the number of buses with the box.

I currently use a Silver Node (in an SP) for my TSM server (this is the same
as an H50 or F50). It has 4 CPU's and 2 GB of memory, it works well, but our
environment is a little smaller. It has 3 SCSI, 1 SSA, 3 ethernet, 1 Switch
adapters.

I would like to upgrade it, when I do I plan to go to a 6H1. For you I
wouldn't go with anything smaller. The M80 is good choice and if you really
want performance a 680 is at the top of the scale. I know of one shop that
uses a S70 for ONLY their TSM server. But like I said focus on the I/O.

I have been asked to look into possibly moving our TSM 4.1.3 server on
OS/390 to an AIX box. I would appreciate any information that you can

One thing you need to be aware of is that if you are going to be sharing
the

(Library

Ordinarily, I'd say man telinit. Except, of course, AIX has
been continually making the online documentation more and more

You're looking for telinit q. This tells the init command to

Re: AIX Question

2001-04-26 Thread David Nash

Richard,

You can only have one default gateway, also know
as route of last resort. To accomplish what you want,
you must set up a static network route for each subnet,
not a default route. You also may need to set a route
to any subnets that attach to the subnets attached to
the NICs in the H70. The interface for these routes
will be the NIC attached to the proper subnet.

Here's and example:

en0: 192.168.0.1
en1: 192.168.1.1

Route Tree:
route destinationinterface
---
default192.168.0.2en0
192.168.0 192.168.0.2en0
192.168.1 192.168.1.2en1

In this example, the default route goes to a device
on the 192.168.0 network. This would be because that
network connects to the rest of the world (eg. the internet).

I'm new to the AIX world so forgive me if the question seems stupid. I
installed two nic cards in my H70 running AIX 4.3.3. Both are on different
ip subnets. Everytime I set the default gateway for the second nic card it
changes the default gateway on the first card to be the same as the second.
Am I doing something wrong. It won't let me set two different default
gateways for each card.

Thanks

According to the release material I've read, AIX5L will allow
multiple default gateways. You might check if this is
back-ported to some patch level for AIX 433.

AIX question: how to display pwd at root prompt??

This is an AIX question:

How does one set-up the root # prompt to display "pwd" (print working

Someone out there must know this.

Ken,

I have the folowing in my /etc/profile to handle this:

if [[ "$LOGNAME" = "root" ]]

   then

   PS1='# '"$(hostname)"':${PWD}=='

 fi

This puts the hostname followed by a : followed by the current
directory.

Hey, this is an ADSM forum, not AIX. ;-)

It depends upon the shell you use. Tcsh is popular because of its
usability features. There, I use:
   set prompt = "%U%n@%m:%~%u ";
in my .tcshrc to give me a prompt of the form
  Username@Systemname:Currentdir

This is what I use:

PS1=$(uname -a):${LOGNAME}':${PWD#$HOME/}:! '
export PS1

This looks like the following:

node_name:root:/tmp:300

The 300 on the end is the number in .sh_history that the next command will
get.

Hope this helps

Re: Another AIX question

2000-10-05 Thread Richard Sims

Ok all you AIX guru's, here's another easy one for you. I need to find out
where there are files I can safely delete on the server. There must be a
bunch filling this up because the last time this happened I just extended
the size with a "chfs -a size=+10 /usr"

Here is what a df -k shows me

# df -k
Filesystem1024-blocks Free %UsedIused %Iused Mounted on
...
/dev/hd2 901120 51528 95%2861913% /usr
...

I need to find out where I can delete files that may not be needed that are
either growing in size or some type of temp file. Now remember I, as before,
I need specifics since I'm in the dard with AIX. I need something I can
use to search the drive if possible for types of files that are safe to
delete, and another command to delete those types of files throught the tree
if possible too.

Geoff - In AIX, /usr is dominated by program product files, which is to say
static stuff rather than transient cruft as in /var. You can use smit
and/or lslpp to list installed products and consider what might be uninstalled
as unneeded. If you commit uncommitted products that you definitely want,
that will dispose of some saved stuff. You can also scan for recent stuff
that might be debris as in the following, which seeks files less than a week
old and stays within /usr when doing so:
find /usr -xdev -mtime -7 -ls

Overall, though, you need an AIX person there to be looking after your AIX
system: working on root volume group file systems as a casual tourist is
dangerous.

Re: Another AIX question

2000-10-05 Thread Prather, Wanda

One place to look for things that are growing in /usr is TSM:

If you have TSM accounting turned on, the accounting data goes to
/usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/dsmaccnt.log by default.
That file will continue to grow. There is some way in TSM 3.7, I think, to
direct the accounting file to another directory. Or what we do is have a
cron script that copies the file off to another place on the 1st of the
month, then clears out the one in the server directory.

Also the client code, if you have it running, may be creating dsmerror.log
and dsmsched.log in the install directory, which is
/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin. You can direct those elsewhere by setting
options in the dsm.sys file.

 Richard,

Everyone take a deep breath before you laughI am the AIX person.

I'm sure you all started with the same knowledge of AIX as me. I know I'm
very much lacking in this area, but I got this server dumped on me without
any notice. I'm just one of the NT guys and could take care of ADSM/TSM
easily if it were on that OS. Unfortunately it's not...or should I say
 fortunately.

Not only do I feel AIX is a better platform for TSM, it has given me a
chance to expand my knowledge. From what I can tell AIX is not as
 widespread
as many of the Unix platforms, and I don't know anything about them
 either,
but it still seems like a stable and robust OS.

The company has given me an IBM education card that allows me to take as
many classes as I want in the next year. I don't know how many I can shove
into this pea brain during that time, with all the work I have to do, but
 I
plan on using the first book at least. Hopefully I can learn enough to get
 comfortable.

I'm not one to go off and start mucking around in an area I have no
knowledge of. That's why I call AIX support and am constantly asking, what
may seem to some, simple little questions. But I'd rather look stupid
 asking
them instead of looking stupid rebuilding something I screwed up because I
 didn't ask.

As always, thanks for all the help. You guys are great.

...Since you were asking about freeing space in a filesystem, /usr, I
think, note that /usr typically runs in the 90% full range, unless you
specifically enlarge is. It is static, except for
upgrade/install time,
during which, smit will enlarge it automatically as needed.

Steven,

Thanks for that answer, I was wondering how I was going to do this upgrade
to 3.7 with that little free space. By the way, if an upgrade was made would
there be any files from the download that might be still around I could
delete? I know you have to delete the executables from NT after you're done.
I have actually done a few installs, with AIX supports help, but we never
went through that after we were done. Where might I look and what type of
extension would they have??? Could these files actually reside on another
mount point and have been installed from there???
