Re: Exchange 2000 TDP-follow-up

2000-10-04 Thread Cris Robinson

I couldn't resist commenting on this subject, again! So here it goes

A few months ago we were getting abit annoyed with TSM and called in some
vendors to looks at their backup products. One was Veritas, who we all know,
another was CommVault which was spun off from Lucent.

CommVault apparently is in bed with Microsoft, and living in sin I suppose.
Their strategy is windows 2000 centric and they make some bold claims about
restoring individual Exchange mailboxes.

I strongly suspect that they have some inside advantage with Microsoft and
Tivoli is being kept at bay. Check out their claims at:
http://galaxy.commvault.com/products_sub.asp?id=63

Now, with that said I must say that I did not like the CommVault database
schema and their DR solution and Tivoli wised up and fixed the TSM issues we
had.

I strongly suspect that Microsoft has more than a "partnership" with
CommVault. But I hate Microsoft anyway so judge for yourself.

Good Luck -

Mehdi,

The procedure for restoring a mailbox within Exchange 2000 will be
to restore the database within the Storage Group that contains the
mailbox.

If you are asking about brick-level backup and restore. Then no.
In fact, a Microsoft Exchange project manager was asked about
when the Microsoft APIs would allow this in the future...
...and his answer was there were no plans to add this to the
backup and restore API.

Thanks,

Re: Exchange 2000 TDP-follow-up

2000-10-04 Thread Del Hoobler

Cris, et. al,

Microsoft DOES NOT have mailbox/item level
backup and restore APIs for any version of Exchange
including the new Exchange 2000 coming out this month.
They repeated this to many customers at the latest
Microsoft Backup BAM in Redmond last week.

There are vendors who have coded solutions using
APIs (like MAPI) that are not intended for backup
and restore. These solutions tend to take large
amounts of time for backups and full restores...
(Try restoring a 50Gig IS or storage group from
an item level backup and restore.)

Microsoft themselves claims that they have tried to
come up with a way to provide some type of
item level restore support via the backup and restore APIs
but have not succeeded because of the architecture of
the JET database (the database that is the heart of Exchange.)
Microsoft contends that customers should take advantage of
deleted item level recovery and the new deleted mailbox level
recovery of Exchange 2000 to solve these problems.

Not that I need to say this...but before making any decisions...
...customers should install and evaluate the complete solution
before committing to any particular product.

Thanks,

Del

2000-10-04 Thread Robinson, Cris

I hope we are not making Del's job a living hell ;-)

Most of us are as tired of these claims as Del is and I must say that I have
no ill will towards Tivoli and their approach to the backup/restore of
Exchange. In all fairness I am always suspicious of other vendors claims
that they have mailbox level restore capabilities.

I just hope that Microsoft is using a level playing field.

Anyway,

Thanks Del!

2000-10-03 Thread Palmadesso Jack

Here is something from the archives I've dug up.

Jack
--

This question was also asked at Microsoft Exchange Conference '99
and Microsoft addressed it by saying that they hold their
position to NOT introduce it into the "backup and restore" API
because of performance issues and having to break their architecture.

They have chosen to take the following steps when it comes to
restoring individual items to alleviate the problem:

- Exchange 5.5 SP3 - Deleted item retention

- Exchange 2000 - Deleted mailbox retention

- Exchange 2000 - Introduction of storage groups that
split the IS into up to 90 databases.
It allows you to manage those db's
  separately...including restoring
  individual databases without
  affecting other databases.
