No, you can run 1 NetWare server without a license. For recovery or
whatever purposes. And, what you're terminating is probably your
enterprise agreement, if you bought the licenses for the servers
(doubtful with anything past NW 4) you can still run the servers for
archival purposes, you just won't have any support with Novell if you
have a problem.

Stupid question time for which I am pretty sure I know the answer but
must
ask..

We are terminating our Netware license for Netware servers. So,
effective
July 1, we can not legally have any running/functioning Netware servers.

From everything I understand (please correct me if I am wrong), you CAN
NOT restore Netware backups to anything other than a Netware server.

So, as far as I am concerned (and have told my last remaining Netware
server admins), any Netware backups after June 30, are mostly useless.
Besides, the contents have been migrated to other Windoz servers.

Yet we still have folks wanting to perform, last final backups of long
dismounted volumes (thus flushed out of TSM, long ago).

Am I correct on this? Am I missing anything?

I agree that the additional complexity which comes from running two
operating systems in one HA cluster environment is challenging. That is
why I ask for help on this list.
But then I do consider the backup of cluster volumes to be a basic
feature of any enterprise level backup environment. Tivoli supports
this, and we have been using this feature for many years with good
success on Netware clusters. It is virtually impossible to provide a
cluster volume with a different nodename on each host. In a worst case
scenario this would multiply backup time and number of tapes needed by
the number of hosts. Restoring from backup will be very complicated and
demanding in a setup where one has to remember on which host a volume
was running at a given time in the past.

One query you should do on the TSM server is Query FIlespace TEST
Format=Detailed to survey the filespace characteristics, seeing if
there is some mixture of Unicode (as in UTF-8) and non-Unicode - and
particularly if any filespaces are both, where TSM will default to
trying to use the non-Unicode instance.

Thank you very much indeed for this advice. With our main TSM server
admin enjoying his summer vacation I will have to wait until I have
access to the server logs again. But I will come back with this information.
On the client side, Netware clients show two or three filespaces
depending on whether NTW:UTF-8 being enabled or not, e.g.

tsm query filespace -detail
# Last Incr Date Type fsID Unicode File Space Name
--- -- - ---
1 06/22/2010 11:14:10 NSS 9No /media/ndss/TEST
2 06/29/2010 17:26:19 NTW:UTF-8 11YesTESTCLUSTER/TEST:
3 06/28/2010 11:36:30 NTW:LONG10No TESTCLUSTER/TEST_OLD:
tsm

On this node the filespace of type NSS was created prior to moving
NTW:LONG to TESTCLUSTER/TEST_OLD and using NTW:UTF-8 on Netware. Access
from the Linux client is denied since 29th of June.

What you're doing is on the fringes of product utilization. You may
have to contact TSM Support to get further. Check your dsmerror.log for
further indications of underlying problems, as well as the TSM server
Activity Log for problem indications at session initiation attempts. A
client trace (see TSM Problem Determination Guide) would reveal more.

Now that's intersting and instructive. I was not aware of the dsmtrace
utility. Below is what might be the relevant bit of the session. I will
still have to inspect the server log.

Server Version 5, Release 5, Level 1.0

Netware Client Version 5, Release 5, Level 1.0

I want to set up Tivoli clients for clustered NSS volumes on a set of
hosts which are running Netware (6.5 5.70.08) or SUSE Linux (OES2 SP2).

The problem I want to address with this message is error ANS1357S
Session rejected when trying to access the Tivoli server with the Linux
client using a cluster nodename. For the nodename set up to backup the
system partitions of the Linux host everything works just fine.

This seems to be related to character encoding: For volumes which use a
filespace of type NTW:Long under Netware access is possible. However,
for those who are set up with NTW:UTF-8 access is denied. NTW:Long is
not an option for us as we have lots of file names with non-ASCII
characters.

Any comments or hints on this? Below is the error message and the
current locale settings. I tried various settings (en_US, en_US.UTF-8,
de_DE etc) with no effect.

you've been doing, but the sense I get is that you've been using the same

I'm sorry if I did not manage to describe the problem in sufficient
detail. It is about NSS cluster volumes in a high availability setup.
These volumes do have their their own IP, host as well as nodename and
move between cluster servers depending on server load and availability.
Backup of cluster volumes is covered by Jason Baseler et al. in 'Using
the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client in Cluster
Environments on UNIX and Linux'.

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/edu/tz-dw-tz-tsmbackcluster.html

Cluster environments are an exception to the rule that a TSM nodename
should correspond to a single machine. Regular backups of cluster
volumes demands that the nodename is used on different hosts. This works
well as long as all hosts run the same OS and TSM client version.

My problem is related to the migration from Netware to Linux. For some
limited time we will run a mixed cluster where cluster volumes are
backed up on Netware or Linux.

What I have been doing so far: I installed the TSM client on the Linux
hosts and configured them for the backup of cluster volumes as described
in the above document. This works fine as long as the node has not been
set up to NTW:UTF-8 on Netware. With a filespace NTW:UTF-8 I get the
error message I documented in my previous mail.

I've no personal, first-hand experience with this, but I investigated
DST a while ago and decided that it is unlikely to be helpful for TSM-based
backups.

Basically, DST means that you've got two physical volumes that are
presented to your client PCs as a single logical volume. In the
background, a rule set moves files from one physical volume to the
other (usually one volume is expensive/fast, the other cheap/slow).
It also allows conventional backup software (the kind that needs to
do full backups periodically) to backup the cheap/slow volume less
frequently, saving both time and tapes.

As far as I know, the unified view is strictly limited to NCP clients,
which means that for TSM, there really are two separate volumes to
backup (can anyone confirm this?). Since TSM uses the incremental
forever approach, it's actually counter-productive to move a file from
one volume to the other, because TSM will see it as a new file and
will have to back it up for a second time.

Netware to Linux client migration

2010-01-06 Thread David Longo
I have TSM server 5.5.2 and some older Netware clients. Netware 6.5
and most are TSM client 5.2.2.0. These are our Network file shares.

The current volumes are NSS (TSM server filespace type NTW:LONG.)
The team is about to migrate all Netware over to Linux, SLES 10 and
the TSM filespace type will be NSS. They have done a small one as a test
and this is how it comes out.

Several questions.

1. I know that disimilar filesystem types can't be backed up/restored.
So, with the old Netware filespaces, I need to keep them around to
restore old data to one spare Netware server and then they copy data
to new system if a restore is needed after migrating.

I thought I would ask though if there is anyway that this can be migrated
as this is probably a popular move and maybe there is a way to do it,
even if a third party something. Ha ha! I know is a dumb question,
but I see Andy Raibeck's standard line about that frequently!

2. With the new Linux servers, they will also implement Novell's
Dynamic Storage Technology. This will enable the infrequent accessed
files to be dumped off to a shadow space on SATA drives.

Does anybody know if this speeds up the TSM backup? In other
words, does the file scan done when backups run also have to scan
this also each day? Any experienced do's/don'ts about this from
TSM point of view?

Thanks,
David Longo

Hi Ron, All

My level of Novell is not very high, However I should be able to install
the Novell client. We are going to try to use Novell Remote Manager. Is
there a way to get the Novell Client to the target machine for install?

The other Netware utilities seem to require The novell client to be
installed on my machine I get messages like Netware Client Libraries
not loaded netwin32 not loaded

I am going to try to find VNC for NetWare, could not find that the before.

Thanks

Neilly, Ron wrote:

1. Novell Remote Manager (aka NoRM).
This is a web based management interface with a lot of capabilities, one

8008/8009 by default. It is provided/loaded by the loading of httpd.nlm
and portal.nlm in the autoexec.ncf file when the server boots. (BTW
sorry if I am being pedantic, but I have no idea of your level of
knowledge of NetWare.)

So open your browser (firefox 3.0.x or ie 6/7 work best - opera also
works well) to https://server.domain:8009 Login with your eDir
credentials.

2. RconIP. This is a nice little app that requires that the server load
rconag6.nlm. You can get rconip here: http://rconip.sourceforge.net/

3. SSH. NetWare has an sshd.nlm that allows terminal based access from
linux/unix clients, among other things.

4. Rconj.exe. This is a java based client that talks to rconag6.nlm on
the server, much like rconip. But this client supports ssl whereas
rconip does not.

5. VNC for NetWare. The project is hosted here
http://forge.novell.com/modules/xfmod/project/?vncnw and there is some
documentation at the cool solutions website here :
http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/431.html

In terms of setup and defaults - ie what is likely to exist at your
remote systems and won't require you loading and configuring something
at the server first (catch-22) - your best bet is NoRM. For future
functionality and security though your probably best off with ssh. But
the best one isn't available for free anymore. Well actually you can
probably find it for download from somewhere, but then it will not be
registerable and thus will subject you to a 30 minute session limit. But
I'll list just for the sake of completeness and choice:

6. AdRem Free Remote Console 2006. They discontinued this in July 2008
and replaced it with LiteCon 2008 for $500 per site. I've been using
this for years and so have a registered version and no time limits. It
totally rocks. Sad to see it pulled.

Re: Netware Client Backup Ver 551

2009-08-14 Thread Andrew Raibeck
If you want files from DATA1: included in the scheduled incremental backup,
then you need to remove the -DATA1: from the DOMAIN statement. Otherwise
the DATA1: volume will be completely ignored during the incremental backup
operation.

Next:

Re-run the query inclexcl command, except add the -detail option:

   query inclexcl -detail

Check the following:

- To the right of the INCLUDE pattern you should see the source of the
INCLUDE statement, such as dsm.opt, server, and so on. Verify it shows
dsm.opt.

- Make sure a client option set is not specifying an INCLUDE statement that
supersedes your dsm.opt INCLUDE statement. So be sure to review the entire
query inclexcl output.

Also:

- Make sure the node is in the same policy domain that has the E4LCLASS
management class.

- Make sure the E4LCLASS management class actually exists (and verify the
spelling) and that it has a backup copy group; though I would expect
dsmerror.log to show some kind of error or warning message if the
management class or backup copy group did not exist.

- Make sure that the policy set to which E4LCLASS belongs has been
activated.

Hello, I have been trying to backup a directory using a specific
Management class, I have other server that works just fine in the

reason the INCLUDE statements on the dsm.opt don't get read? I can
do a manual backup no problem, also, the DOMAIN ALL-LOCAL DATA:
works!! Exclude works fine too! Here is the dsm.opt:

2009-08-14 Thread Andrew Raibeck
I don't see any INCLUDE statements for DATA1:, though that volume will be
automatically excluded from incremental backup processing. I do see INCLUDE
statements binding files on the RSEARCH[1-3]: volumes to management calss
FOM2CLASS. If those are working, then your configuration is fine (I cannot
argue with success!).

In your DOMAIN statement for this other system, I see excludes for volumes
RESEARCH[1-3]: vs. the includes for RSEARCH[1-3]:. I only mention this on
the off-chance that the DOMAIN and INCLUDE statements are supposed to be
referring to the same volumes, e.g., did you really mean to use DOMAIN
-RESEARCH1: or is it supposed to be DOMAIN -RSEARCH1: ?

No problem :) every time I change the dsm.opt I restart the scheduler. I also
tried domain all-local data: and it backs up the whole volume excluding the
directories from the exclude.dir statements, the problem is that it doesn't use
the management class that I want(to tape vs disk). So it appears that the
Include statements don't work, weird!

I had thought that something excluded in the domain would preempt any
other include/exclude processing.
You could try removing the Domain Statement exclude for -DATA1:.
I apologize for asking the basic stuff, but have you restarted your
scheduler since you changed the opt file?

Hello, I have been trying to backup a directory using a specific
Management class, I have other server that works just fine in the same
Domain policy using other Management class. For some unknown reason the
INCLUDE statements on the dsm.opt don't get read? I can do a manual
backup no problem, also, the DOMAIN ALL-LOCAL DATA: works!! Exclude
works fine too! Here is the dsm.opt:

I had thought that something excluded in the domain would preempt any
other include/exclude processing.
You could try removing the Domain Statement exclude for -DATA1:.
I apologize for asking the basic stuff, but have you restarted your
scheduler since you changed the opt file?

Netware, TSM and open files

2009-04-09 Thread Sean English
Have a question about how TSM can backup open files on Netware boxes. We
did some searching around and the only thing we can find is using the
DYNAMIC setting on the copy group to get a fuzzy backup. Does anyone know
of any other way or perhaps an add on product that works with TSM to
backup open files for Netware? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello Ramiro,
That reminds me of similar performance degradation issues we had when our
netware servers were upgraded to 6.5 and their TSM clients to 5.4.1.
I think we added :

Then, I just found :

Did some searches of the archives, but must not have the right keywords..

Subject: [ADSM-L] TSM client reported Netware versions

Anyone have a table or way to equate the TSM client reported version of
a
Netware client to the actually Netware release? When I look at the nodes
for
one of our clients I see 5.60, 5.70, 5.70.4, 5.70.7.

Did some searches of the archives, but must not have the right
keywords..

Netware TSM 551 client

2008-12-16 Thread Ramiro Ruiz
Sorry for the question. I am backing up about 6 TB of data, divided into 3
Netware volumes. We are forced to stop the backup because of Hydro issues in
the building, the backup is on the last volume. What would it happen if I stop
the backup, and re-run it later? would go to the last backed it up file or
directory? what is the best way to stop the backup?

Thanks in advance for your help

Re: Netware TSM 551 client

2008-12-16 Thread Steven Harris

Ramiro,

It will start a new backup from the beginning. Now that will mean that
any changed files will be backed up, but there should not be many as you
just ran the first backup. What will take time is going through the
filesystems and comparing them to the database.

I hope that makes sense to you

Regards

Steve

Netware volume types

2008-12-15 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU
I was asked this question by one of our Netware admins. I could not find a
simple answer. Can one of your Netware wizards help? The client is V5.5.1

We have talked about the somtech.ns1.vcu.edu node taking so long to
backup. I just notice that the filespace type for most of the volumes are
NTW:LONG. There are 4 volumes (PSYC, PSYCADMIN, RADBIO, RAI) that has the
filespace NTW:UTF-8. Do you have any rhyme or reason why 4 of the volumes
would be different? I'm wondering if that's making a difference.

Hello, anybody out there using LAN-free with Netware? There is no TSM for SAN

Hello Ramiro,

Troubleshooting netware client can be tricky and in that case the command line
is your friend.
On netware server prompt, type in dsmc (ensure no error message when you
start that command line client)
Then issue 'query tsa' just to check that connection to TSM server AND netware
server are fine ; issue 'q tsa nds' if you also backup the nds.
Please check that the netware account that you use with TSM has proper full
rights over the destination volume.

Then, try this :
tsm restore VOLUME:\tsm551\* DATA:\TEMP\ -su=yes -preservepath=complete
(VOLUME: being the source volume where folder was backed up ; no need to create
destination folder before restoring)

If files are properly backed up (did you check dsmsched.log and dsmerror.log
?), they should be properly restored on same netware server.

Can you confirm you launch the client with a ncf file that should look like
TSMSTART.NCF hereafter (assuming your nw server is 6.5) :
LOAD SMSUT.NLM
LOAD TSANDS.NLM
LOAD SMDR.NLM
LOAD TSAFS.NLM /nocachingmode /NoConvertUnMappableChars
SEARCH ADD SYS:\TIVOLI\TSM\CLIENT\BA
LOAD DSMCAD

(/nocachingmode /NoConvertUnMappableChars switches are optional)

If you're successfull in command line mode, then give a try to web client.

That's all I have in mind currently.

Let me know if that helps.
Best regards.

Netware client TSAFS - Any ideas

2008-11-27 Thread KingNathan
Hello Ramiro,
When you try the restore through the GUI are you selecting the location to
restore to / restoring to the original location or typing in the path?
I have seen this error before when the restore location was typed in and the
volume name had been entered incorrectly.

Failing that, are you able to map a drive to the Netware volume using the same
account TSM uses for it's backups and try to create a file in the directory?
Perhaps the TSM account has insufficient rights to create files on the volume?

Hope this helps?!

Cheers

Hello Ramiro,
Are you still in trouble with your netware client ?
what's the netware server level ? what's the TSM client level ?
can you please give details about dsm.opt file : did you add 'schedmode

can you give extract from activity log about schedule not starting : does it
fail to find ip address ? in which state is schedule reported : pending ?
failed ? missed ?

Backing up Groupwise on Netware Server

2008-02-05 Thread Jim Young
Hi,

Does anyone have any information on backing up a Groupwise mailserver on
Netware(6.5 SP6) using a TSM server (AIX). IBM have stated that the best I
can hope for is a fuzzy backup. Not really a good selling point when I'm
trying to provide a single backup solution to the company. I keep finding
references to St Bernards Open File Manager but need more info on how this
would work.

Any advice, opt file examples, configurations or tech papers gratefully
received.

Cheers

Jim

GWBACKUP will allow you to dump the data to flat files.
You can then use the TSM Backup-Archive client to send and
store those files on the TSM Server.

Re: Backing up Groupwise on Netware Server

2008-02-05 Thread Howard Coles
I admined GW For about 9 years, and the best overall for TSM is St.
Bernard's OFM. The GWBackup utility creates an exact copy of your Post
Office to another location, but that adds Admin overhead. The GWTSA
would work great if IBM would get off their butt and support it. Then
GW Becomes just another file system, only messages, sort of like the
tsands did for NDS.

Set your opt file just like you would any other TSM NetWare client, and
install St. Bernard to handle the open files. I've done restores after
this kind of backup, and if the backup was complete, the restore always
worked.
Make sure you exclude the wpsin and wpsout type folders, as TSM will
complain. I don't have a copy of all the excludes handy. The main
folders to make *sure* you get are the ofuser, ofmsg, offile, and the
post office db files.

NetWare Client full backups running when incremental is selected

2008-01-17 Thread Kevin P. Kinder
Server: TSM running on z/OS 1.7

 Just upgraded to 5.5

My NetWare clients are now running full backups instead of the
incrementals which are specified. It looks as if every Netware server
that I have is doing this. Obviously, this is killing my disk and tape
storage space. This is happening on client versions from 5.2-5.4

I upgraded one client to 5.5 and tried it again - still doing the full
backup.

I found APAR IC36892 detailing the NWIGNORECOMPRESS bit, and tried that
in the DSM.OPT of the 5.5 client. Again, it still did not help.

Anyone run into this (doubtful, as I appear to be the last person
running TSM on z/OS) or have any pointers in the right direction?

Are your NetWare boxes running in a clustered environment? If so, you
may have a situation where NetWare changes a file attribute on every
file on every cluster disk that gets moved from one node to another.
When the attribute gets changed, TSM sees it as a changed file and backs
it up again.

I ran across this issue a year or so ago at a customer site. I don't
know the details (the NetWare admin was fiercely protective of his
environment and wasn't forthcoming with help). If this is the case, the
issue lay with NetWare, not TSM.

Deleting inactive copies in Netware

We recently decommissioned a Netware server and would like to delete all
inactive backups and keep the last active for 90 days. The server has been
removed from the network, and I read in client version 5.3.4 there is an option
to Delete Inactive files. When I try to setup a virtualnode connection to
delete the inactive copies through a session in Internet Explorer, when it
comes time to display the contents of a share or volume , all I get is a

Netware restore requirement question

The current 4.11 filespaces are all NTW:LONG. Can we
restore (using either FROMNODE or VIRTUALNODENAME) from the old 4.11 node's

Re: Netware backup include/exclude/domain issues

2007-06-08 Thread Prather, Wanda
It can be done, but it may actually take longer than backing up again:

1) export the filespace you want to move
2) while backups aren't running,
in TSM, use RENAME NODE to rename the source client to BLAH
rename the target client to SOURCE
3) import the filespace
4) rename SOURCE back to TARGET
5) rename BLAH back to SOURCE
6) now check the filespace names that belong to TARGET.
If it's windows, you'll need to rename the one you imported so that the UNC
name of the filespace is \\TARGET\whatever

That makes sense since the first part of the restore process is to get the

We saw this with our old mail server (cyrus). With over 15M objects, a
regular (not no-query) restore would often take hours to get the list of
what to pick from to restore. We usually did very specific backups, not
 GUI.

I would highly recommend dividing into multiple TSM nodes.

We are doing that with our big-honking Netware server. There are over
20-departments. Each will have their own volume with their own TSM node.
This is for both security/administration but also load.

Well see now you guys got me thinking...

Here's my issue. I have two large FP servers that pretty much contain all
of our department files. We have multiple department drives I would like
 to
somehow segregate. The reason is that our file restores have gotten
REALLLY slow, meaning the GUI navigation. If I need to do a file
 restore
and search using the GUI, clicking on another folder and waiting for the
results for Active Inactive files takes sometimes up to 20mins to
 respond.
 It's getting ridiculous.

Have you come across this issue? I can only presume it's because we have
 way
too many files getting backed up on a single node name. Advice?

I was thinking of trying to get each Dept drive backed up separately,
 which
would require new node names etc. That's fine but my issue is getting this
setup without have to re-backup the directories (recreating the
 filespaces),
or losing retention on the directories. I was trying to find out how to
 move
filespace nodedata. Like moving the D:\ filespace from NodeA to NodeB. I
don't see instructions anywhere for this. I only see instructions for
 moving
 from one storagepool to another.

 Thanks in advance!!

Here's my .opt file with excludes/includes. I think you can get what you
want from this by breaking out the include statements and putting them into
whatever .opt file you're running etc. Notice the syntax that I had to use

single backup which means all directories are getting scanned still but I

I have something similar with a NetWare cluster here. Any given server
has an instance of the TSM client loaded for the local SYS volume and
server specific information. Then, each clustered resource (which has
 its
own volume) loaded on that server has another instance of the TSM
 client.
The dsm.opt file for the server contains the line:

 DOMAIN SYS: SERVERSPECIFICINFO

This causes that instance of the TSM client to only backup sys and
serverspecificinfo, but skips the other volumes that are present on the
 server

The dsm.opt file on the other volumes have the line:

 DOMAIN VOLNAME:

and only backup the volume that is explicitly stated in the domain line.
There shouldn't be a need to negate volumes using DOMAIN. Just
 explicitly
define the volume you want to backup.

Here's my .opt file with excludes/includes. I think you can get what you
want from this by breaking out the include statements and putting them
into
whatever .opt file you're running etc. Notice the syntax that I had to use
for selecting directories, I had to play with that a bit. I only run a
single backup which means all directories are getting scanned still but I
think you guys were more or less looking for the select statements? Sorry

Well see now you guys got me thinking...

Here's my issue. I have two large FP servers that pretty much contain all
of our department files. We have multiple department drives I would like to
somehow segregate. The reason is that our file restores have gotten
REALLLY slow, meaning the GUI navigation. If I need to do a file restore
and search using the GUI, clicking on another folder and waiting for the
results for Active Inactive files takes sometimes up to 20mins to respond.
It's getting ridiculous.

Have you come across this issue? I can only presume it's because we have way
too many files getting backed up on a single node name. Advice?

I was thinking of trying to get each Dept drive backed up separately, which
would require new node names etc. That's fine but my issue is getting this
setup without have to re-backup the directories (recreating the filespaces),
or losing retention on the directories. I was trying to find out how to move
filespace nodedata. Like moving the D:\ filespace from NodeA to NodeB. I
don't see instructions anywhere for this. I only see instructions for moving
from one storagepool to another.

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Netware backup include/exclude/domain issues

That makes sense since the first part of the restore process is to get the
filelist from the TSM server. So, if you are pulling down 500K entries or
1M entries, a lot of time will be spent in the first phase.

Netware backup include/exclude/domain issues

2007-06-06 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU
We have this big-honkin Netware server we are creating, to consolidate
multiple smaller servers.

Each department will have their own volume. Therefore, we need to create
multiple opt files and nodes to keep each volumes backup separate from the
others. We created separate Netware id's that have specific rights to
their volumes, only.

Try as I might, I can't seem to get an incremental backup from scanning
all the volumes and generating errors.

If I negate the volumes via the DOMAIN statement, this works. But, as we
add volumes, we would have to go around and update dozens of opt

I tried the approach of EXCLUDE *\*:* and then an INCLUDE

It also keeps erroring on trying to backup System specific information

We installed TSM to each volume, set up an opt for the specific volume
with the domain statement pointing only to that volume. Even renamed
the dsmc.nlm to a more volume specific name such as dsmcshare.nlm. This
allowed us to load/unload as needed without effecting the other volumes.
We also renamed dsmcad.nlm in the same fashion.

If I negate the volumes via the DOMAIN statement, this works. But, as

I have something similar with a NetWare cluster here. Any given server has an
instance of the TSM client loaded for the local SYS volume and server specific
information. Then, each clustered resource (which has its own volume) loaded
on that server has another instance of the TSM client. The dsm.opt file for
the server contains the line:

DOMAIN SYS: SERVERSPECIFICINFO

This causes that instance of the TSM client to only backup sys and
serverspecificinfo, but skips the other volumes that are present on the server

The dsm.opt file on the other volumes have the line:

DOMAIN VOLNAME:

and only backup the volume that is explicitly stated in the domain line. There
shouldn't be a need to negate volumes using DOMAIN. Just explicitly define the
volume you want to backup.

Not sure why you would need to install TSM multiple times. We do have

there is a collision issue then we will look at doing your way.

Can you send me one of your dsm.opt files ?

Tivoli Netware Client 5.3.2

2007-05-21 Thread William Kyndt
Hi,

We have recently upgraded our Tivoli Netware Clients to version 5.3.2 to match
our backend version. We run a 4 node cluster and it has become apparent that
since the update when failing resources across nodes the Tivoli client does not
unload automatically and now waits for user input (press anykey) before
continuing the unload process.

Does any body know how to get around this problem?

Many thanks.

Kind regards,

William

You don't say if you configured the MANAGEDServices option, per the
manual.
In any case, check the contents of the dsmwebcl.log.
Also assure that the Web browser is modern, with the required Java in
place,

Novell/Netware TSM backup hangs

2006-12-04 Thread Fawad Baig

Hi All,

Im looking for known issues, pertaining to TSM client 5.2.3 and
Novell/Netware environments, where the TSM incremental backups may
hang for not so obvious reasons. We have already eliminated network
problems as being the cause. Are there any technotes, incidents that
anyone is aware of that might hint of cause/solutions for this
scenario. Im looking for anything and everything at this point as we
are experiencing very very slow backups for some of our Novell
clients. The data has also increasing but the window which the backups
take, have increased on much larger span, so it is hard for us to
point that as the root cause. Novell Client is at 5.6

2006-12-04 Thread Dave Canan

Fawad, have you run a sample backup and gathered an instrumentation trace?
This would be a good place to start to try and determine where a bottleneck
might exist. To gather this, place the statement testflag
instrument:detail in the dsm.opt file and run the backup. Perhaps if you
do this and post the output of the file (named dsminstr.report for Novell)
to the listserv, members of the listserv (and I) could look at the result.
We also would need to know much more about your environment that you have.
I would also suggest opening up a PMR with IBM Software support. They will
send you a performance questionnaire and gather the appropriate traces that
they would need to look at the performance problem you're having.

TSM client on a Netware Cluster

can offer any advice, Tips or dsm.opt file (s) examples of this is
implemented?
Or If there anyone knows where I can get some good documentation
on how to configure the backup-arhive client in a Novell cluster

would be appreciated, From what I understand it would be on 6 cluster

Thanks for any help or advice in advance!

Re: TSM client on a Netware Cluster

2006-11-30 Thread Andrew Ferris
Hi Timothy,

Here's how we do it on two clusters with 4 and 16 cluster volumes:

TSM on a Netware Cluster

Assumptions:
TSM Clients on NetWare servers already running
Client nodes and schedules for cluster backups defined in TSM
SYS:/ETC/SMS/TSA.CFG has “Disable Cluster” value set to “yes”
Up to date on TSAFS and SMS patches

Create a /Tivoli folder in the root of all clustered volumes. This is where the
clustered clients will live.
Copy over every file and folder from SYS:/TIVOLI/TSM/CLIENT/BA (or wherever the
server TSM clients are) to the /Tivoli folder except these:

TSM.PWD
*.log
dsm.opt

Rename the “DSMCAD.NLM” file to something like “DSMCAD-CV01.NLM”.
In other words make each cluster node’s DSMCAD unique.

Create a dsm.opt file for the clustered resource. Here’s an example:

**
* TSM Config file for [ClusterVOL01]
*  ---

  COMMMETHODTCPIP
TCPSERVERADDRESS tsm01.mrl.ubc.ca
TCPPORT 1500

  NODENAME [ClusterVOL01]

  HTTPPORT 1611
  ERRORLOGRETENTION 7
  SCHEDLOGRETENTION 7
  MANAGEDSERVICES WEBCLIENT SCHEDULE
  DOMAIN [ClusterVOL01]
  CLUSTERNODE YES
  PASSWORDDIR [ClusterVOL01]:\Tivoli
  PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE
  NWPWFILE YES
  ERRORLOGNAME [ClusterVOL01]:\Tivoli\dsmerror.log
  SCHEDLOGNAME [ClusterVOL01]:\Tivoli\dsmsched.log
  SCHEDMODE POLLING
  NWEXITNLMP NO

***

The dsm.opt file should have a different “HTTPPORT” value for each cluster
resource such as:
[ClusterVOL01] 1611
[ClusterVOL02] 1612
[ClusterVOL03] 1613
[ClusterVOL04] 1614

The “CLUSTERNODE” value should be “YES”.
THE “NWEXITNLMP” value (aka press any key to close) should be “NO”

We have an account with read rights to all clustered objects and servers (i.e
their OU).
Let’s call it “backer.users.ourOU”. Use this account with all TSM clients.

Run “[Path:/to/]dsmc -optfile=[Path:/to/dsm.opt]”
Enter “q tsa” on command line.
If it asks for a NetWare account and password then use the “backer” account.
If it doesn’t ask then the output should look like this:

tsm q tsa
NetWare TSA Information

TSA Name: [Server_Name]
TSA Module Name.: TSAFS.NLM
TSA Version.: 6.57.1
SMDR Version: 6.57.1
User/Password Location..: [ClusterVOL01]:/TIVOLI/TSM.PWD
User/Password Valid.: YES

Modify the cluster resource’s load and unload scripts.
Add these entries to the end of the cluster volume’s load script:

delay 5
load [ClusterVOL01]:\tivoli\dsmcad-CV01.nlm
-optfile=[ClusterVOL01]:\tivoli\dsm.opt

Add the entries to the start of the cluster volume’s unload script:

unload dsmagent
unload dsmcad-CV01
delay 2

The “delay” values may to be tweaked to add more time depending on the nature
of cluster resources.

The above setup means that cluster resource CADs will follow their cluster
object as it loads and unloads. Bad things will most likely happen if you try
and move a clustered resource during a backup so I'd advise against that. But
other than that everything been fine for us.

NetWare Restore Problem

2006-10-31 Thread Kevin Kinder
TSM Server 5.3.3.0 running on z/OS 1.7

Trying to restore to a NetWare server
6.5 Service Pack 5

Netware Client is 5.3.4.0

I have two different nodes backing up data from different directories on this
server.

Nodes are: DOP1 and DOP2

I am trying to restore from the DOP2 node. The options file for this node is
dsmdop2.opt

The command I am issuing is:

dsmc restore data:admdop/* -subdir=yes
-optfile=sys:apps\tivoli\tsm\client\ba\dsmdop2.opt

I get the return error:

TSAFS 6.51.4 291 an invalid path was used
ANS4005E Error processing data:/admdop/blah blah file not found
ANS4005E Error Processing '': file not found

This error message repeats for every file in the directory.

Running the same command with the pick option shows that there are indeed files
available to be restored from this node and directory. I also tried to restore
just one file, with the same result. I tried restoring to a different directory
on the same server, again the same result.

I looked through Richard Sims reference and searched the archives, but I can't
find any fixes for this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Netware client error

My Netware admin reports that if you use the 5.3.4 TSM client for
NetWare to back up a SAN attached volume, it backs up as a NTWFS
filespace type. It should be backing it up as a NTW:LONG filespace
type. The 5.2.3 client backs up these volumes correctly.

Has anyone else seen this problem?
