Hi Steve, Assuming the user running the DP/SQL client has local administrator authority, the customer can disable UAC prompts only for administrators as described here: http://tweaks.com/windows/39115/disable-user-account-control-uac-only-for-administrators/ Alternatively, it is possible to disable UAC only for specific programs as described here: http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/run-programs-elevated-without-getting-the-uac-prompt/ and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WcWJlm_O_k Del "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager"wrote on 06/01/2017 07:59:52 PM: > From: "Harris, Steven" > To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU > Date: 06/01/2017 08:01 PM > Subject: TDP for SQL and UAC > Sent by: "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" > > Hi All > > I've got a bit of a show-stopper here that I could use some help with. > > Previously, SQL backups have been mostly handled by dump to disk > and backup with BA Client. Re: TDP for SQL server error
Remco, It's more than a mistake in an icon. Re: TDP for SQL server error
Hi Eric, I agree. There is a fix for it and it is being tested now. It is targeted for the 7.1.0.1 interim and will be available once the testing has completed. If you decide you need an immediate fix, you can always open a PMR and ask for a patch. In earlier versions of the TDP for SQL, at least, the SQL Server had to restore the backup metadata objects to query backups because it didn't keep local or centralized copies of that data the way Oracle does (with control files or a RMAN catalog database). So best practice is to keep all TDP SQL metadata backups on fast-access storage pools (DISK, FILE or VTL) so there is no appreciable delay (from tape mounts or seeks) in restoring the metadata objects. The TDP for SQL documentation describes this and gives examples of how to configure include statements to direct the metadata backups to a suitable storage pool (which you have to set up first). Hope this is useful. If you're already configured this way, please provide us more detail about your environment for us to offer further advice. =Dave -- Hello World.David Bronder - Systems Architect Segmentation Fault ITS-EI, Univ. of Iowa Core dumped, disk trashed, quota filled, soda warm. david-bron...@uiowa.edu

It's exactly like that. You need to keep the metadata on disk. In the TDP for SQL 6.4 book, search for the topic Metadata Considerations. With the old GUI I put a link in the Public Desktop-folder for each MSSQL instance. Easy for the MSSQL-people just to double click on a named icon on their desktop which pointed to the correct configfile. Now they are copying cfg-files all around in the tdpsql directory. On one occation a configfile for an instance was emptied in this process. The backup schedule had no problem with that since it just backed up the default instance instead. So not only an inconvenience but also an added risk with the new GUI. I vote for a speedy resolve of this future improvement. Hans Chr. Re: TDP for SQL Server
Hi Del! Our SQL guys did some testing with the new SQL client. When you install 6.4.0 and 6.4.1 afterwards the wizards starts fine. In fact the following thing changed: In the early days we installed the TDP client and copied the license file afterwards. This always worked, but not anymore. When you copy the license file BEFORE installing the TDP client, the wizard starts fine. So one first has to copy the license file to C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\TDPSql and then you can immediately install the 6.4.1 client, which starts the wizard. This is an acceptable work-around for the SQL guys, the only thing to keep in mind is that part of the 6.4.1 client is the installation of the .NET 4.5 framework which requires a reboot! Not very desirable in a production environment, so this has to be carefully planned. Anyway, thank you very much for your help! Here's what I did: I downloaded 6.4.1 from the FTP site, downloaded 6.4.0 from Passport Advantage I extracted the sqlclient.lic from the 6.4.0 package I extracted the 6.4.1 package to C:\tsm_images (again, a different installer: 7z. Why?!?) I executed SetupFCM.exe from C:\tsm_images\6.4.1.0-TIV-TSMSQL-Win. It installed the framework, the server had to be rebooted and the FCM installation continued afterwards. You stated that I had to copy the license file to c:\Program Files\TSM\TDPsql afterwards, but that directory does not exist yet! I then installed the TDP client manually from C:\tsm_images\6.4.1.0-TIV-TSMSQL-Win\fcm\x64\sql\6410\enu by running the setup.exe. The directory to c:\Program Files\TSM\TDPsql then was created and I could copy the license file to it. After clicking the TDP for SQL link the setup wizard started and we could successfully configure the TDP client. Now it works. Hi Eric, This may have been an issue with the 6.3.1 version. Did you get the latest 6.4.1 package? http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24035560 After installing it, make sure the sqlclient.lic is in the C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\TDPSql directory. On the left hand side of the MMC GUI you should see a treeview that looks something like this: IBM Tivoli Data Protection - IBM Tivoli Storage Manager - Dashboard - SERVER1 - Manage + Configuration + Diagnostics + Learning If you are not seeing this, open a PMR, maybe something else is wrong with the configuration seeing the license file. Re: TDP for SQL Server
Hi Del! I removed the 6.3 client and installed 6.4.1. This installer is also not working according to the manual. So, the SetupFCM does not start the TDPsql installation afterwards which seems to be a bug to me since the manual does not specify that you have to do this manually afterwards. Thanks for your help! Hi Eric, What happens if you install 6.4.0 first, then follow it with an upgrade to 6.4.1? The book is written to follow that method since it is the best practice method to get the paid (base) license installed first, then follow it with the PTF (fix) package. Re: TDP for SQL Server
Eric, It's a documentation issue. They repackaged the SQL client inside the Flashcopy manager GUI, and the install package does you no favors; it's a 2-step install now. After you run the setup.exe, all you have installed is the Flashcopy Manager shell, you don't even have a tdpsql directory . Look in the directory where the package expanded, and run setupfcm. Then go through it's setup wizard. That's when the tdpsql directory gets created. Re: TDP for SQL gui takes 20 min to display inactive
Hi, Steve. If restoring a file takes multiple small volumes in one pool, but only one large volume in another pool, TSM will choose the pool with the fewest volumes/mounts required, even if the smaller volumes are significantly faster. This causes some problems with restores choosing real tape over small file or VTL volumes. Well, I say that as if it's fact, but while I haven't seen that documented anywhere, that's what I've observed. I've also received hearsay confirmation from various IBM sources that it is this way. YMMV :-) I think this might have been addressed with the libtype=vtl, and I'd like to see confirmation on that, but that wouldn't help you much with file class volumes. I recommend you check your actlog for the sessions in question to see if they've been getting tape mounts during restores. Re: TDP for SQL-MAIL with flash copy manager Schedules
Hi Murat, You cannot set different policies for backups of the same object name using the same NODENAME. That is a fundamental behavior of backup objects in a TSM/FCM environment. There are ways to to solve your requirement. For SQL, if you want different policies for the same object name, you will need to have different NODENAMEs. All backups under different NODENAMEs will get managed separately. The same is true for Exchange, except with Exchange, you have another possibility. You can create a COPY type backup and bind it to another management class that has different policy settings. In this case, you do not need a different NODENAME. This will only give you two different policy possibilities. In order to solve your daily, weekly, yearly requirement, you will need to have a different NODENAME. Please take a look at the User's Guides for Data Protection for SQL and Exchange. Search for the word policy. If you are still not able to get this working, open a PMR with IBM support and they can assist you. Re: TDP for SQL vs SQL dumps
The TDP provides a few things: - versioning - easy restore - shortest path between the live database and the final destination of the backup, thus the lowest number of things that can go wrong Everybody always prefers to do things the way they've always been done. Nobody likes changes. Dumping a db to disk, and then moving/copying that data to TSM means that you spend a bit of money on the diskspace that you need for the dumps. With big databases, that might be quite a bit of money. Also, because the dumps have to be complete before you can copy the data to TSM, there is an additional window for data-loss. It makes no sense implementing a TDP for a single 2kb database, but neither does it to dedicate an additional few TB of disk to keep your dumps and then copy them to TSM. There is no single truth, it all depends. I like TDP, I like to have all backup related logging at the TSM server, even if the backups aren't scheduled by TSM. I like to be able to tell my customers 'if it's in TSM, it can be restored'. Now how do you guarantee the quality of a two-step process? What if the intermediate disk is full, or broken, or? Who will check the consistency of the dumps? Re: TDP for SQL vs SQL dumps
We have done that in the past and it worked just fine. We built the SQL Dump on our backup server (not TSM at the time) and that allowed the backup server to dump the data straight to tape. We also had a batch process to move the files to the bit bucket after they got old. The TDP is much simpler, but as long as the DBAs are happy and aware I am not worried. Re: TDP for SQL Database backups - Specify order
Michele, If you truly want one of your databases to get backed up first, I recommend that you change your backup script to have separate invocations of the backups, with the second invocation skipping the one you backed up in the first invocation... ...i.e. something like this: . tdpsqlc backup bigdb full tdpsqlc backup * full /excludedb=bigdb . Re: TDP for SQL don't truncate the logs
Christian, This is normal and correct behavior. In the SQL Server Full Recovery model, in order to truncate log, you must run a log backup. You will see that in the Microsoft docs and the DP/SQL User's Guide. Here is an excerpt from the Microsoft documentation: --- Transaction Log Truncation If log records were never deleted from the transaction log, it would eventually fill all the disk space that is available to the physical log files. Log truncation automatically frees disk space for reuse by the transaction log. Except when delayed for some reason, log truncation occurs automatically as follows: * Under the simple recovery model, after a checkpoint. * Under the full recovery model or bulk-logged recovery model, after a log backup, if a checkpoint has occurred since the previous backup. --- Thanks, Del ADSM: Dist Stor Manager ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU wrote on 02/19/2009 08:15:36 AM: [image removed] TDP for SQL don't truncate the logs Christian Svensson to: ADSM-L 02/19/2009 08:16 AM Sent by: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Please respond to ADSM: Dist Stor Manager Hi *SMers, I had a lot of fun with you all at Pulse09 in Vegas. What I do see in the GUI is that the Truncate Checkbox i gray out in the GUI and when we choose LOG backup it is visible again but we can not backup all LOGs of some reason and TDP tell us that does logs are truncated by SQL it self's. The backups works fine and we can do restore of the databases but not truncate the logs without running a LOG backup after the full. I just wonder if anyone have any idea why this is happening and if the customer I working with has enable anything in SQL that don't let TSM to truncate the logs as normal? Del, do you have any idea? Paul, If you need to restore from the new node name, you would launch the CLI or GUI specifying the alternate options file name. For example, in the example below: GUI: TDPSQL /TSMOPTFILE=DSMARCH.OPT CLI: TDPSQLC RESTORE dbname full /TSMOPTFILE=DSMARCH.OPT This will tell Data Protection for SQL to connect to the TSM Server using the alternate options file, thus the alternate NODENAME. 1. Are you able to perform a backup using the the internal backup tool within the SQL Server Management Studio? 2. Do you have other SQL Servers in your environment? Re: TDP for SQL advice
Hi Paul, Data Protection for SQL can certainly run LOG backups. You could modify your automated scheduled batch file to call the a SQL Server job to shrink the files. For example, something like this: tdpsqlc backup * full tdpsqlc backup * log osql -E -i shinkjob.sql where shinkjob.sql is a TSQL command file to shrink the log for you. What else is involved in setting this up? On the client do I have to create another dsm.opt file with the new node name to match what I set up on the TSM server? In the context of the BA client, you can create multiple server stanzas in dsm.sys to point at different TSM instances and/or node names - eg, we do this with one particular system so that we can hold an image backup for ten days normally, but once a week, put one aside for eight weeks. The dsm.sys for this node looks like: servername (instance)_8WR commmethod tcpip tcpport(port) tcpserveraddress (server) passwordaccess generate [...] nodename (client)_8wr servername (instance) commmethod tcpip tcpport(port) tcpserveraddress (server) passwordaccess generate [...] nodename (client) All that is in dsm.opt is a line servername (instance), so that backups by default go to the client's standard node; for the 8 week retention, we add a -se=(instance)_8WR, and TSM does the right thing. (The '[...]' signals where I've cut out a number of TCP/IP options, along with other client-side options.) How to do this for a TDP client is left as an exercise for the reader. :-) Hopefully, it should give you some ideas. Good luck.
Re: TDP for SQL advice
I think so (not being an SQL guru I'm now sure what shrink means exactly.) Look at the TDP for SQL book, there are some parms you can add after the backup * full that determines whether the log is reset or not. We currently perform SQL database backups using TDP (using the tdpsqlc backup * full command) We then use Enterprise Manager to run a log backup (using the BACKUP LOG command) followed by a log shrink job (using the DBCC SHRINKFILE command) Is there a way to do all of these within TDP for SQL? Re: TDP for SQL restore question
Thanks for that clear and concise explanation. It appears that is exactly what is happening. After 40 - 45 minutes the actual restore part of it started and it has now restored 3 Gb of the database. For this size you need bigger timeout, I have COMMTIMEOUT on TSM server set to 15,000 seconds (250 minutes) What is happening is that SQL (not TSM) is building the DB for the data to be restored to. If it was only say 5GB, you would barely notice. When DB is built, then the restore starts flying! David Longo Paul Dudley [EMAIL PROTECTED] 6/27/2007 9:41 PM I am currently trying to restore a database from our production server onto the E drive of a test server. I have previously been able to restore a database from our production server onto the D drive of the test server. The database is 40 Gb in size. When I have tried this previously the session has timed out after 5 minutes. I have increased the idle time out to 120 minutes. It is currently trying to restore and the output from the q sess command shows that 3.2 Mb of bytes have been sent. This amount of bytes was sent in the first minute of the restore session after the tape was mounted. Since then it has stayed at 3.2 Mb for the past 35 minutes. The session state according to q sess is SendW. The load on the client server is quite low - between 1% and 5%. There is more than enough disk space to restore the database. I have checked Enterprise Manager and there is not much activity on the server. There are no other processes running on the TSM server. If this session times out and the restore fails after 120 minutes how can I work out why this has happened? Is there anything I can do to make it work? As stated above I have been able to restore the same sized database onto the D drive of the same client server. Thanks Paul Paul Dudley ANL IT Operations Dept. Re: TDP for SQL - archive normal backup?
Paul, No. If you want to create backups that are kept for longer term than your normal Data Protection for SQL backups, you could create a separate nodename, for example, SQLSRV10_ARCH, and back up using that node once a week or once a month, (or whatever your needs are) and make sure to bind those backups to a management class that has the long term settings that meet your requirements. Re: TDP for SQL - archive normal backup?
From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Paul Dudley If I have run a normal TDP for SQL database backup onto my TSM tape library, is there any way to grab that backup and archive it? Nope. The TDP agents do not (at this time) support archives. Nor can you put it on a backupset tape, since backupsets do not support API-centric data, which is what TDP agents produce. Your only chance to is to run an export, and you will have to export at least the entire filespace the backed-up file belongs to. -- Mark Stapleton ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Senior TSM consultant

Dan, Yes, it can have a space. Use quotes around the database name when specifying Data Protection for SQL commands. I see that you mention 3 opt files. I think that the key to this is that you must use 3 different nodenames; sql_daily, sql_monthly, sql_yearly. The reason is that if you use the same nodename, the TDP rebinds all previous backups to the MC you specify with the current full. Therefore you won't achieve what you are looking for. Also with the separate nodename approach, I find it easier to manage the schedules, the occupancy and the tapes. If you are looking to see if the backups are in the correct management classes, select * from backups where node_name='sqlservername' and class_name='monthly' If you want to get detail on specific dbs, you can use the hl_name select * from backups where node_name='sqlservername' and class_name='monthly' and hl_name='\master\' Leigh -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Adrian Compton Sent: 03 October 2006 09:09 To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: [SPAM: 4.000] [ADSM-L] TDP for SQL Management Classes Hi, I am having problems trying to setup the following and wonder if anyone can shed some light on this or have done so themselves. I am backing up a number of SQL Databases. I am not worried about the sizes, or whuich databases, but only require to do a full backup including any logs. I have a daily schedule running and keep the versions for a week. I want to also have a full backup/archive at month end (keep for 1 year) and also a yearly(keep for 7 years) backups I have setup 3 different sql.cmd files i.e Daily, monthly and yearly, and at the end of each of the include statement in the 3 opt files(also daily, monthly and yearly), put the relevant management classes. Will this provide me with what I am looking to achieve. I am trying to find out where to look to see that the backups have gone to the correct management classes. Any assistance would be most appreciated. Kind regards Adrian Compton
Re: TDP for SQL Large DB Restoration
Pranav, The SQL Server is performing the preformat of your SQL database files. The amount of time it will take depends on the types of disks, speed of disks, and database file layout. Data Protection for SQL is blocked until the SQL Server finishes the database preformat. I would boost COMMTIMEOUT to a very high number to find out what you will need to set the value at. For example, start with: SETOPT COMMTIMEOUT 9 and then examine the operations to find out how long it actually takes. We are also experiencing this same issue with the TDP SQL client. We just restored a 41 GB database in about an hour and a half. We previously had cancelled the restore several times because the session was in a SendW, and we thought it was hung. Then it failed because it timed out after an hour. I finally tried maxing out the commtimeout, and we just let it go. The session remained in a SendW the entire time. Yet when it completed, all of the data had been transferred. Re: TDP for SQL Large DB Restoration
This is expected behavior. This is documented in the DP/SQL User's Guide: Note: When restoring large SQL databases, specifying a value of at least 1 in the commtimeout option will help prevent a restore operation from ending prematurely. If the restore operation is performed in a LAN free environment, this value must be specified for the Storage Agent. And it is also documented in the following IBM Technote: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21114216 SQL Server backups are a stream of bytes. At restore time, the SQL Server will ask for a very small amount of that stream first. The SQL Server looks at the stream of bytes to be able to know exactly how to rebuild that database. The SQL Server then goes off and preformats the files and whatever else it needs to do in order to restore the remainder of the bytes. During this preformat time, the TSM Server remains in SendW state. I hope this helps. Re: TDP for SQL - restoring to different server
Paul, You will need the SQL Server on the alternate machine. SQL Server backups are simply a stream of bytes. They are not files, like Exchange, for example. At restore time, Data Protection for SQL gives the stream of bytes back to the SQL Server. The SQL Server knows exactly how to put the databases back together. As for restoring an older backup with the command-line client, yes... you will want to use the /OBJect= parameter. Check the User's Guide for exact syntax. Also check these IBM articles: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21105967 http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21168550 Thanks, Del Del Hoobler Tivoli Storage Manager Development IBM Corporation ADSM: Dist Stor Manager ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU wrote on 07/19/2006 01:30:20 AM: We have just started using TDP for SQL (version 5.2.1) I need to restore an SQL database backup from 7 days ago to another Windows server.
