Replication target server down causing client schedules to miss on replication source?
Hi all, Quick question. Has anybody ever witnessed client schedules to go into a missed state because the replication target is down? I have seen this happen last weekend on a very recent SP 8.1 version running on Linux, no other changes where made and missed schedules are very rare in this fairly static environment. Nothing on the server or client logs other than the source noticing the target is no longer available and then finding it again. No running processes on the replication source or target when the target went down gracefully to be moved. Since I have nothing in logs I can't really create a call at IBM but I figured I ask here since it was a strange thing to witness. It could just be a coincidence. Regards, Stefan
Re: Server Down [Summary]
I could not get a good handle on it, so I spent all day doing a DR restore (really got started about noon, DB was restored by 5PM, clients could connect by 6) but most of the clients needed the TSM client Scheduler service (windows) to be restarted on each client. It does seem that my 13G log space was full, and not able to extend further. I am on TSM 4.2 on Windows 2K At least it is working again. Thanks to Andy Raibeck, Richard Simms, and Curtis Stewart for chiming in. When you feel under the gun, compatriots like this help a lot. Now to talk to the boss about the upgrade again... :) ... There has been no prior posting indicating what that ANRD message actually means, but I would guess that it reflects a Recovery Log problem, maybe even that the log (over)filled, as perhaps for lack of scratches when the Dbbackuptrigger level was reached. (Letting spaces fill to their maximum is dangerous in that such boundary conditions typically see little or not testing in most program development, and odd symptoms may result. This is an old TSM level, so may exhibit odd behavior when limits are reached.) Unfortunately, the administrator of that system disregarded best practices and maximized the size of the Recovery Log to 13 GB, which all but eliminates "wiggle room" in being able to add a small increment to get by restart. You might attempt to add a few megabytes to the Recovery Log to see if that allows you to get by the condition. I would set "NOMIGRRECL" and "DISABLESCheds Yes" in the server options file for the restart attempt, to try to eliminate extraneous ingredients. You could also try applying a higher level 4.2 patch level, but I'd be disinclined to. You may have to perform a DB restoral to get past this. Richard Sims

Jack, Have you tried running dsmserv in the foreground? Just open a command prompt and navigate the the directory with the dsmserv executable, then just run it. As part of implementing any major system, it is absolutely essential that we become familiar with it, which means having read the manuals and having become familiar with both the elements of the system and where to look up information, particularly problem handling information. 2. That the system be administered, a vital element of which is monitoring, particularly for resource shortages. 3. That we investigate early indications of problems, which allows timely remediation and prevents them from growing into calamities. It pains us to see postings like this, where a major system upon which a company is depending is needlessly falling apart. IBM, and the customers participating in this mutual-aid mailing list, make great efforts to try to assure that TSM systems do what they need to. It's disappointing to us when a customer ignores all the information and ends up in hot water. As for remediation: - Boosting the size of the Recovery Log is covered in the Admin Guide manual, under "Increasing the Size of the Database or Recovery Log" - The dsmadmc command is a client, which interacts with a server once it is up. If the server does not come up, then dsmadmc is obviously useless, and you need to deal with the server initialization command itself, which is 'dsmserv', which is covered in the Admin Guide manual under "Starting the server". The doc indicates that if you run dsmserv with the "quiet" option, then the server starts as a detached daemon - and therefore if you invoke it without that option, you are in interactive mode, where you will see all messages and thus problem indications. You can start the server ( dsmserv process ) directly from your console, then you can see the messages and what is happening on your server. Try it. Many thanks in advance - I never thought I could have two >simultaneous disk failures in a RAID 5 array as well as our DR script >disabled at the same time... A classic DR procedures failure. Without the files which definitively record volume usage, you will have to grope in the dark. (More on that below.) In that two disks "failed", might this actually be not a disk failure but something simpler like a power supply issue which, if itself resolved, could restore access to intact drives? Check into just what really is broken there. As for working in the dark... If you know the approximate time period of when your dbbackup was taken, you can narrow it down to a few tape volumes and then try each in a db restore: only one tape in a given time period can be a dbbackup, and the others ordinary data, which db restore should spit out. Go to your 3494 operator panel. Activate Service Mode. In the Utilities menu, choose View Logs. Go into the candidate TRN (transactions) log. Look for MOUNT_COMPLETE, DEMOUNT_COMPLETE entries in your time period. The volser is in angle brackets, like <001646001646>, wherein the volser is 001646. Richard Sims, BU
Re: Server Down - Urgent Request
This is just one tip for the next time, if it happens again. I hope don't. Any way, you can create more than one device config and volume history in dsmserv.opt. And after a DB backup you can execute the backup of devconfig and volhistory without informing the file. When you don't inform the TSM Server does a backup on those files that are defined on dsmserv.opt. Hi All, Server level: 5.1.5.1 Server OS: Solaris 2.8 Direct attached to a 3494 with SCSI attached 3590 Drives Issue: We unfortunately lost two disks on a RAID 5 array that contained the database, recovery log, and primary diskpools. Compounding the problem the volhist.bak and devconfig.bak files were stored on the same disk array (we had a nightly script in place to copy to an AFS location but it had been disabled due to maintenance previously). So, my question is, how can I determine which tape volume my database backup from yesterday is on? Is there a way using the interface on the 3494? Any other thoughts or suggestions? I'm currently configuring the storage array for use and will need to execute a restore db command fairly soon. Many thanks in advance - I never thought I could have two simultaneous disk failures in a RAID 5 array as well as our DR script disabled at the same time... Re: server down
Hi Christian First of all, this is not related to a full log. This is probably because he as a filelock on the log file. Second of all, a reboot of the server would probably reset the lock, and make it possible to start the server again(as Jeroen pointed out). The question that nobody have asked, have you check your processes to see that there are no dsmserv processes running in the background? This would also cause this kind of error message. The error message that occurs when the log is full is different from the one that Suresh is reporting. I would suggest rebooting the server before trying to format another log file. Re: Urgent: server down , lvmAddVol error on restart
This may help you a bit!!! Problem Desc: What are the maximum Database log LOG Logical Volume Sizes? Solution: The maximum Database log Logical Volume Sizes(*) are as follows: Recovery Log: 5,704,253,440 bytes, 5,440 MB or 5.3125 GB Data Base: 570,425,344,000 bytes, 544,000 MB or 531.25 GB. Symptoms of exceeding: ANRD adsmstart.c(2379): error=35 from LVMADDVOL Refr: /lvm/lvm.h #define LVMRC_MAX_LV_SIZE 35 /* Max Logical Vol size reached.*/ (*) These values are not affected by mirroring as mirrors do not affect the logical volume size or the size of the LPT, Logical Partition Table. It is the amount space reserved for storing the LPT in the check point area that limits the logical volume size. Another method to determine the maximum logical volume size is to use the undocumented "SHow LVMFA" command. This is the preferred method as it is possible that the maximum logical volume size may be changed in some future version. The primary areas of interest are the output titled "DB Logical Partition Table area" and "LOG 1 Logical Partition area". The "LOG 2..." section may be ignored as this area is for a design that was never implemented. adsm> show lvmfa LVM fixed storage area capacities: Disk Table area: 14 pages allocated; 33 entries/page; 470 total entries. Using an average disk name length of 37 characters. Copy Table area: 6 pages allocated; 145 entries/page; 870 total entries. DB Logical Partition Table area: 200 pages allocated; 679 entries/page; 135995 total entries; Maximum possible DB LP Table size: 531.2 Gb. LOG 1 Logical Partition Table area: 2 pages allocated; 677 entries/page; 1355 total entries; Maximum possible LOG 1 LP Table size: 5.3 Gb. Delete you 1024 MB vol and dsmfmt another of about 400 MB and try again. The linmit is somewhere around 5.5GB, don't remember exact number. This should get you out of jam. Try 200MB if 400 fails. Re: Server Down
I don't know if this is available to 3.1 or if it came about in 3.7 but DSMSERV EXTEND LOG (Emergency Log Extension) Use this command to extend the size of the recovery log when you need additional log space to restart the server. After the server is running, you can do the following: v Back up the database, which frees the recovery log space. v Adjust the size of the recovery log, the database backup trigger full percentage, or both to allow for successful future database backups. Note: Use the DSMFMT utility to format a new recovery log volume. Re: Please Help - Server Down
Long, check the availability of your db & log files from your operating system... looks like you probably had a volume group go unavailable... also you might have to add to and extend your log to get back up... DSMSERV EXTEND LOG (Emergency Log Extension) Use this command to extend the size of the recovery log when you need additional log space to restart the server. After the server is running, you can do the following: v Back up the database, which frees the recovery log space. v Adjust the size of the recovery log, the database backup trigger full percentage, or both to allow for successful future database backups. Note: Use the DSMFMT utility to format a new recovery log volume. Syntax DSMSERV EXTEND LOG volume_name megabytes Parameters volume_name(Required) Specifies the name of a new, formatted volume available for use as the recovery log extension. megabytes(Required) Specifies the size, in megabytes, of the new volume. The size must be a multiple of 4MB and 1MB less than the size of the volume specified in the volume_name parameter. For example, if the volume is 5MB, specify a value of 4. > -- > From: Long Nguyen[SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Reply To: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager > Sent: Wednesday, August 09, 2000 8:43 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Please Help - Server Down > > Has anyone encounter this before???
