Patches required for TSM 5.5 on Solaris 9

2009-06-05 Thread Minns, Farren - Chichester
Hi all

I know I asked this question before but I still have not found a clear answer.

Is there a list of the required OS patches to run TSM 5.5 on Solaris 9?

I have found all the other information I need, but not that bit.

The Tivoli main site is a good jumping-off point:

http://www-306.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/IBMTivoliStorageManager.html

Then you can click on Product Documentation.

From there, narrowing down the search to include Solaris, I got to:

Re TSM 5.1 - 5.2 and Solaris 9

2005-06-10 Thread Farren Minns
Hi all TSMers

I am hoping to be getting a new Sun Fire V240 to replace our current E250
TSM backup server. At present our E250 still have Solaris 2.7 as the OS and
I need to move top at least 2.8 in order to upgrade to TSM 5.2.

What I am hoping to do providing the new server is fourth coming (and that
is not yet guaranteed), is install Solaris 2.9 and then recreate the same
TSM environment as on the existing E250 ( so initially running TSM 5.1.6.2
under Solaris 2.9). I will then proceed with the upgrade of TSM 5.1 to 5.2.
So my question is this. Does anyone have any experience on running TSM 5.1
on Solaris 2.9 and is it a supported mix?

Many thanks in advance

Hi Fellow TSM'ers
Problem as follows:
Server 5.2.2.0
Client 5.2.0.0 also tested 5.2.2.0
Solaris 5.9

If I use the domain statement in the dsm.sys file to exclude any one of
the file systems, it excludes all the file systems for example.

I have the following FS's on the client server

/
/var
/oradata1
/oradata2
/backup1
/backup2
/app

I want to exclude /oradata 1 2 from being backed up, so I put this in
the dsm.sys file:
Domain -/oradata1 -/oradata2
I then run an incremental from the command line or a schedule and
nothing is backed up.

I have tested this scenario on a Solaris 5.8 and an AIX 5.1 machine and
it works as expected. I.e. all FS's are backed up except the ones
excluded by the domain statement.

Has anyone else experienced this type of thing.

Problem with 3582 on Solaris 9

2004-07-23 Thread Steve Hartland
Hi all
I am having a bit of an arm wrestle getting TSM to write to LTO2 drives in a
3582 library. Config as follows:

TSM 5.2.2.0 (also tried 5.2.0.0)
Solaris 5.9
Direct fibre attached to 2 drives.
Drive firmware 38D0 (latest on web)
IBMtape (latest on web dated 19 May)

Problem description:
When trying to label tape, library mounts tape in drive, rewinds tape, and unloads it
without appearing to write to it. TSM reports I/O error with KEY, ASC and ASCQ all
zero. TSM then reports that the volume has been labeled and even checks it in. q libv
shows volser present as scratch. Backup attempt fails exactly the same as label libv
attempt.
Drive entries in output of dmesg command seem to be correct. Have tried all 8 /dev/rmt
options eg. 0st,0stc, etc. All fail
Have also tried with and without the TSM Device Driver.
Even tried configuring drive as manual and manually load tape. Still fails.

The strange thing is that write and read back using TAR command works fine on both
drives.

Hair being depleted.

Any ideas

Re: Problem with 3582 on Solaris 9

2004-07-23 Thread Prather, Wanda
Just ideas...

If tar works and TSM doesn't, that could indicate your ELEMENT addresses are
wrong.
That is, TSM thinks /dev/rmtx is drive 1, so it mounts the tape in drive 1,
but AIX is looking for the tape on drive 0.
Do a Q DRIVE * F=D, make sure the element addresses are correct.

The other thing I have seen cause weird I/O errors is the driver for the
HBA.
I am clueless about Solaris hardware, but I know that on Windows, the HBA
drivers are separate code and are not provided with IBMTAPE. Check to make
sure you have the latest level of driver for the HBA, AND that it is set up
for point-to-point or switched fabric, not artitrated loop.

Good luck!

Another symptom of an element mismatch is if TSM will mount a tape but
be unable to use it and/or dismount it.

About a year ago I was involved in moving a 40GB TSM database from AIX 4.3 to Solaris
8. The first thing that we did was upgrade the TSM on the AIX box to the, then,
current TSM version which was 5.1. A server-to-server export would have taken, quite
literally, months. So the previous the database backup was restored with the dsmserv
commands. I am at home and won't have all the details till I go to work on Tuesday. I
can give you some good advice on this subject. Something that I certainly do remember
is the necessity put database, recovery log, and stgpool volumes on raw disks.

I believe we should do the migrate from TSM server AIX to Sun Solaris first, then go

We currently have TSM Server 4.2.2.10 (32 bit) on AIX 4.3.
I believe we should do the migrate from TSM server AIX to Sun Solaris first, then go
from TSM Server 4.2.2.10 to TSM 5.2, but I'm not sure.
Please give me some advice or best ways to do that.

Any hints and tips are very welcome and appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Juan R.

Re: TSM Server 4.2.2.10 from AIX 4.3 to TSM Server 5.2 on SUN Solaris 9

2004-02-13 Thread Douglas Currell
About a year ago I was involved in moving a 40GB TSM database from AIX 4.3 to Solaris
8. The first thing that we did was upgrade the TSM on the AIX box to the, then,
current TSM version which was 5.1. A server-to-server export would have taken, quite
literally, months. So the previous the database backup was restored with the dsmserv
commands. I am at home and won't have all the details till I go to work on Tuesday. I
can give you some good advice on this subject. Something that I certainly do remember
is the necessity put database, recovery log, and stgpool volumes on raw disks.

Actually it is 5.1.5 which is a maintenance release that can include new
functionality. The projected release date is early October. Rumor October
8th, and rumor, if you enter the beta you can have 5.1.5 right now. There
is a lot of stuff in 5.1.5 including automated rudimentary support for
mailbox level restore using EXMERGE. So, we will see.

From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of

Some of our users are asking about a Solaris 9 TSM client? It is not yet
listed at the support system page.

Anyone have an idea about when support for this will be available? Any
experience with the current TSM Solaris client on 9?

From http://www.tivoli.com/support/storage_mgr/adclsuns.htm:

No currently available version of the TSM client for Solaris supports
Solaris version 9. That's not to say that you couldn't get it to work, but
Tivoli does not officially support it, and will tell you so when you seek
help for it. You probably already know this. Why not try it yourself, and
tell us all how it came out?

IBM/Tivoli employees who are participants in this list will not be able to
make any official announcements or pronouncements about Solaris 9, so all
the responses you'll most likely get here will be about worth the electrons
it took to send the message to you. Relax, and it'll be here when it's here.

Which is a bit a problem, Solaris 9 has been publicly available for a
few months now and the beta's are publicly avaialable for well over half
a year now. So why is there still no support from Tivoli for the most
recent release of one of the most used server platforms worldwide? This
is actually a problem in our company as well, we're posponing long
overdue upgrades due to lack of a TSM client. Hacking the client install
script is IMHO not the way to go. Tivoli should just do a better job in
providing this client

Do you mean the install failed? The Solaris install package, as built
by IBM/Tivoli, will reject a Solaris 9 system. It is possible to hack
the package to allow it to install (details available on request).

Or do you mean you were able to install it but it didn't work?

Please provide more specifics.

We did not hack the install package, and the install failed. I would
be happy to have the details, and I would be happier if IBM/Tivoli would
provide a statement of direction for support on Solaris 9.

Thanks for you assistance!
