TSM 6.2 library replacement

2014-03-20 Thread D'Antonio III, Vincent E (N-Aerotek)
Good Morning,

We replaced a library and I went through and deleted the libr, paths and drives
then defined them all again. This went fine, but when I ran checkin libv it is
ending to fast and successful but didn't add anything. I even tried to audit
the library and still not seeing any tapes. I see my volume when I do q vol,
but nothing when I do q libv.

I am still a newbie when it comes to TSM so help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Vince

Re: TSM 6.2 library replacement

2014-03-20 Thread Nick Laflamme
Check the path to your library device; it sounds like that's the wrong
device, or it's not working correctly.

When you look at the new library directly, are the tapes there and in
storage slots, not input slots?

Nick

Base release(s) of TSM 6.2

2012-08-22 Thread Ehresman,David E.
What is/are the base release(s) of AIX TSM Server 6.2, i.e. which install media

Re: Base release(s) of TSM 6.2

2012-08-22 Thread Erwann Simon
Hi David,

The base release of TSM 6.2 is TSM 6.2.1. Part number for AIX is CZG6SML.

Note that you can install directly to the target version, 6.2.4.0 for instance
(without any base version previously installed), and then install license only
from the base package above.

TSM 6.2 6.3 upgrade problem

2012-05-14 Thread TSM User
Folks,

I'm trying to upgrade a TSM 6.2 server to 6.3 on AIX 6.1. The process
completes, but gives an error that DB2 failed to install. When I check the
db2_inst.log as directed, I'm getting the message:

DBI1149E To execute this program, you must be the owner of the
installation copy.

Explanation:

The current DB2 copy was not installed by the user who is running the
program.

User response:

Log in as the user who installed the current copy of DB2 and rerun the
command.

Thing is, I'm doing this while logged in as root, which is how the 6.2
software was installed as well. I'm not finding any additional errors as
of yet, and Google doesn't have much to help me.** Launching TSM in
console mode just confirms that DB2 didn't upgrade, as it fails reporting
that DB2 version 9.7.0.4 is required, while 9.7.0.2 is installed. The
messages themselves are pretty clear; I just can't tell what needs to be
changed in order for it to work.

Thanks!

Thanks for the link Neil.

I'm using Firefox 3.6.24.

I'm not seeing the issues you have re Nodes and Tabs on Client Nodes and Backup
Sets.
Also don't have your Error 500 Manage Servers.

The only problem I've seen on Admin 6.3 Manage Servers is moving to a second
server from the same Manage Servers tab. Example:
- Open Manage Servers, see all servers in list.
- Pick one (Server Properties).
- Work on it for awhile, Activity Log, whatever.
- Click OK or Cancel to close that server.
- the Tab returns to the original list of servers.
- Pick another server.
- Searching within the activity log creates a PortletException error.
- Any other work (Sessions, database/log, admin schedules) seems to work fine.

Closing the Manage Servers tab and restarting it always lets me pick a server
and search Activity Log seems to be only when I'm searching the log on the
second server to be chosen that the error occurs.

Re: TSM 6.2 server restarts

2012-03-15 Thread Huebner,Andy,FORT WORTH,IT
I certainly hope TSM 6.2 does not need to be restarted. I am just getting it
installed.

If you are seeing a performance drop after it runs a long time ('long time' is
variable, here 'a while' is 6 months) you should open a PMR to get the problem
documented and fixed.

I do not subscribe to the 'restart just because' theory. I have run systems
for years without a restart, including Windows. My only Windows TSM server has
only been up a little while, it was installed in December. The AIX ones have
been up a while or longer.

Are you seeing a performance problem?

Re: TSM 6.2 server restarts

2012-03-15 Thread Clark, Margaret
While we were running 6.2.2.0, we had one unpleasant occasion when the tape
drives started dropping offline one by one, and then I was unable to connect to
the server to log in.
The Linux admins said the error message indicated that the AIX box had run
itself out of memory, and recommended that I hunt through the APARs fixed in
the latest server releases to see if any memory leaks had been fixed. We had
to reboot to get TSM running again. I really couldn't say whether periodic
server restarts (as opposed to reboots) would have prevented the incident.

We have fairly recently started running a TSM 6.2.2.0 server under zSeries
Linux. Some of my co-workers have brought up the idea of scheduling periodic
restarts of the server code for performance reasons. Are other TSM 6.2 sites
seeing any sign of performance problems resulting from long periods of
continuous operation?

Re: TSM 6.2 Administration Center

2012-03-14 Thread Neil Schofield
I personally would not advocate moving to Administration Center 6.3 - I've
had a nightmare with it starting with the installation. On Windows, the
depth of the directory structure on the unpacked install media is so long
that placing it more than one directory down causes the install to fail
due to the length of the longest path to the files. It then installs some
extraneous services that must then be disabled. (The latter problem is
fixed in 6.3.1.)

Once installed the performance under IE8 / IE9 is so slow as to make it
unusable. Performance is better under the latest versions of Chrome and
Firefox but there are links and functionality that work in IE which simply
give errors in these other browsers.

I've had a PMR open for a month now to do with performance under IE but it
seems to be going nowhere. Meanwhile I've got a bunch of users who are
openly revolting against it and want to go back to v5.5 of the TSM ISC
(which to me tells you everything you need to know about 6.3!)

Re: TSM 6.2 Administration Center

2012-03-14 Thread Vandeventer, Harold [BS]
I didn't have any issues with the 6.3 install path; I used
D:\TSMImages\AdminCenter\install.exe and installed to D:\IBM\Tivoli.

This was on Windows 2008 R2.

Only install problem was the itmuser DB2 Credential test failed. Ended up
putting that account name in the local Administrators Group; then install ran
just fine.

What are the extraneous services?

I've not had any problems with Firefox 3.6.24; not allowed to use IE 8 or IE 9.
Not sure about Chrome; haven't tried to install it.

My major problem in Admin Center 6.x is the loss of all the scripted email
reports from the 5.x Operations system.  Creating those in BIRT was a disaster;
trying to do anything in BIRT was a disaster.

I'm trying to wrap my hands around the 6.3 Cognos reporting tool; but can't get
it to send a scheduled email report. Have a PMR open on that, with the
guidance being a tech note that I already knew about.

Also found that 6.3 Monitoring cannot collect data from TSM 5.5.2 Servers. I
thought 5.5.x was on the compatibility list, but that PMR resulted in a 'there
are differences' response and 6.3 isn't compatible.

One thing we have seen help with IE* in regards to performance, and
specifically if multiple users access the AC simultaneously, is to
increase the Java heap size of the underlying application. If the
environment where the AC is installed allows it, of course. You can use
the support utility to change the Java heap max value.

I can't make heads or tails of the documentation for either product and
neither is working properly.

After, I installed the Reporting piece, it then asks me to create a DB2

created automatically? What good is this so called-reporting program if you
have to build everything from scratch anyway?

Admin Center is even worse. It won't install at all. It just gives me a
message that says Deployment Engine Failed to Initialize. Please check
with the log files for a more complete description of the failure.. The
only problem is, there are no log files.

I am running the installation on a VM running windows 2k3 server. Ram and

FYI... don't install the latest Firefox 8 if you're using FF to access TSM
6.2 Admin Center.

I did the dumb thing and installed the latest Firefox 8 this morning when
prompted.

I got logged into the 6.2 Admin Center, but couldn't open any servers for
management. Got a 500 error on the screens.

An uninstall and reload of V 3.6.13 was the solution.

That's actually not as ridiculous as you think, well, actually it's not
at all. Some apps used a version of HTML/java/whatever, that just
would not work with newer versions of IE, Netscape, or Firefox.

IBM's Shark Storage was one, we had to keep an older version of netscape
around along with an older version of java, just to be able to manage it
until we migrated off. There have been other apps that had the same
problem.

Re: Firefox users with TSM 6.2 Admin Center

2011-11-11 Thread Prather, Wanda
IMHO, if IBM is going to require specific features of a specific browser to run
their product (and AFAIK, FF 3.6 is the ONLY browser that works properly with
the Admin Center), then IBM should package it with the product and support it.

The current situation is wholly unacceptable, because customers standardize on
particular browser versions for security patches, because the desktops are
supported by a different group than the storage admins, for sanity sake, etc.

Hi,

the db2 catalog is part of the startserver script, you may safely skip that
step.

I'd be interested to hear about your fs layout and experiences. TSM 6.2 in
HACMP is not very common and many people I talk to have problems with TSM v6 in
fail-over clusters.

Re: Sql query problem in tsm 6.2

2011-09-07 Thread Fiske, Daniel
For some reason 6.2 does not like linking tables in the old way. You need to
use aliases.

Try this select statement:

select ev.node_name, ev.status, nd.email_address from events ev, nodes nd where
ev.node_name = nd.node_name and ev.status != 'Completed' and
ev.scheduled_start '2011-09-06 08:00:00' and ev.scheduled_start '2011-09-07
07:00:00'

TSM 6.2 / Amazon S3

2011-08-17 Thread Eric Thompson
I understand that it does not exist natively. Is there a way to do it
via a storage gateway? Other solution?

Thanks again. Eric

No, this doesn't exist natively. If you were interested in doing this
with TSM, take a look at Riverbed Whitewater. Using it as a primary
storage pool doesn't seem to be a best practice, however.

Well, there are a variety of Make a filesystem based on S3 projects,
for any platform you care to name. You could put FILE devclasses on
any of those.

The notion makes me shudder, though.

TSM 6.2 / Amazon S3

2011-08-16 Thread Eric Thompson
Is anyone using Amazon AWS / S3 as a primary storage pool for their TSM
Server?

Is this possible? Is there any documentation / information out there on
it?

For example, CommVault has a built-in option to utilize S3 as a
storage target for data, etc.

Thanks Eric.

performance issue with commonstore for sap and tsm 6.2.x

hello,

with new tsm server 6 (now the newest version 6.2.3 on windows 2008) we
see performance issues on archiving sap data with commonstore (cssap)

here is a part of the cssap log

interesting, that after archiving 2 files, there is a pause of 13 to 16

or more.

environment

we also see performance issues on importing other data from another tsm

reorg of the tsm database is working.
we do not see any performance issues on migrate, copy or something else

any ideas?

Ang: [ADSM-L] performance issue with commonstore for sap and tsm 6.2.x

2011-08-11 Thread Daniel Sparrman
The Commonstore log doesnt really say much since there can be a number of
reasons why Commonstore is pausing every 2nd document which is not related to
TSM.

In what way are you seeing the performance decrease when importing data from
another server? How big is the difference in time or MB/s? Have you tried
importing exactly the same data earlier? Or are you comparing two different
imports?

Are the backups also affected, or have you only noticed the performance issue
when it comes to Commonstore and importing from other TSM server?

You didnt mention the version of the TSM API on your Commonstore machine.

As a sidenote, data archiving from Commonstore directly to TSM works great
since you're only storing large BLOB's from SAP which are never checked or
accessed from SAP unless SAP needs to bring back that old archived table data.
However, when using Commonstore for document management of SAP (that is,
storing individual documents) I'd recommend having a content system inbetween
such as IBM CM OnDemand or IBM CM. SAP regularly checks the archive for
availability of documents, and storing them directly in TSM might be a
potential performance issue.

Best Regards

Daniel

I solved 24 hours in arrears by adjusting the collection and warehouse
intervals to more frequent occurrence. Collecting at 15 minutes and
warehousing at 1 hour.

Your suggestion to go directly to the TSM db2 is good, ALL of the data is there
and timely. We sometimes use the node contact name, which doesn't seem to
appear in the WAREHOUS schema.

I found a couple of errors in the BIRT rtp library as delivered on the TSM 6
package. It wasn't correctly identifying failed schedules on the summary chart
and node listing. Solved the chart by editing the SchedulesSummary Data Set.
Similar edit on the SchedulesMissed data set returns totally incorrect result.

Also haven't figured out how to get a July 11, 2011 6:00 PM string out of the
111071118000 string value. It appears the leading 1 and trailing 000 are
extraneous.

I'll be skinning my knees a few times learning to ride this new bicycle.

Hi Harold,
I have been working a little bit with BIRT. One thing you need to remember
about the Warehouse database is that it is 24 hours behind the real world.
You need to open the TSM DB2 database to be accessible direct from TCR and then
write reports direct to the TSM Server to be able to get 20 hours backup status.

I will first admit that I'm a TSM admin, not a report writer but we have
to come up with a replacement for the reporting component on the TSM 5.x

Finally got BIRT Report Designer configured to query the TCR WAREHOUS schema.

When previewing a report in BIRT Report Design the schedule start displays as
'1110714180036000'. That is somehow to be July 14th, 2011 at 6:00 PM.

Running the similar report in Administration Center (Reporting Common
Reporting) properly displays the Jul 14, 2011 6:00 PM format.

The data is defined as CHAR in Birt, not a date/time as I would expect. I
don't know enough DB2 yet to look at the properties in WAREHOUS.

Anyone out there working, successfully, with BIRT?

At least a few of you are holding out for Cognos in a future release.

Christian Svensson

I will first admit that I'm a TSM admin, not a report writer but we have
to come up with a replacement for the reporting component on the TSM 5.x
servers.

Thanks...

SV: Reporting and BIRT in TSM 6.2

2011-07-08 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi,
With TCR that are included in TSM Monitoring and Reporting are including all
DLL's and Binaries for BIRT.
Don't remember if it was 2.2.1. But to import and create reports in the
Monitoring and Reporting is easy when you finally learn BIRT.

But don't try to upgrade to BIRT in TSM Reporting tool. In TSM 6.3 have IBM
upgrade the BIRT module so you can use all new functions in BIRT.
Also as Wanda say. But sources I have in IBM has they implement Cognos in to
TSM 6.3. Looking forward to see if Cognos is as good as BIRT.

Has anyone found an easy to follow setup doc for integrating BIRT 2.2.1 into
the Admin Center for TSM 6?

The install guide for Monitoring and Reporting , Feb 2011 has a very short
section and a link to
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/tivoli/library/t-tcr/ibm_tiv_tcr_customizing_report_designs.pdf.
That file refers to a zip provided by the product. Anyone know where that
unnamed zip would be found?

Is BIRT the only way to work up custom report? Should I be using something
else, that's supported?

Seems like I'm swimming in the deep end without a jacket.

Thanks...

I've avoided getting into BIRT, because I was told by a Tivoli person that 6.3
will switch the reporting from BIRT to COGNOS. But I haven't heard anything
else, so that is just a rumor. Anybody know if the rumor is true?

While I haven't heard of 6.3, I've been given similar advice from a person in
a position to know such things but not in a position to make commitments. If
there's a 6.3, it wouldn't surprise me if such a change were included.

Is that properly vague? :-)

Thanks Carlo and every one, this issue has now been resolved. Eric from Level2
helped us get the server back online.
What had happened was that when we upgraded TSM, DB2 was still running. Even
though TSM is halted, DB2 still runs in the background. IBM is planning to fix
this issue in future fix pack's. To correct the issue he had us run following
command, which updated db2 and eventually fixed the problem.

/opt/tivoli/tsm/db2/instance/db2iupdt instance name

This was caused by needing to have suid turned on on the tsm code's file system.
Haven't figured out how to do that in redhat enterprise yet?

encountered this. Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.

There's nothing wrong with your workstation. This is a known problem,
and the issue here is with the javescript engine that is in IE. It is
REALLY bad in IE6, a little better in IE7, and even better with IE8. But
I would stick with FF for now.

On a whim, I tried Firefox 3.6.10. The difference: nearly

Is anyone else seeing a similar behavior or is it just my workstation?

 Thanks for any comments; Harold.

I believe there are several defects On IE 8, that's why we do not
officially declared about that.

And AC 6.2 only declared work with Firefox 3.5-

Basically the same here.
IE7 is way too slow and FF 3.6.16 is just right.

Re: TSM 6.2 Admin Center and IE 7.

2011-05-04 Thread Richard Sims
The restrictions cited in the Technote serve as further evidence that Java is a
failure and liability as a software execution environment. Every package we
come upon that employs Java imposes severe restrictions within which it will
function, with specific Java requirements that can make it impossible to
implement multiple Java-based applications in the same computer because of
their conflicting requirements. Past postings in the ADSM-L archives express
customer dissatisfaction in dealing with Java. The fragmentation and
disparities in Java make it an IT liability.

IBM obviously went to Java so as to have a develop-once approach for writing
software for multiple platforms. But while Java is a convenience for
developers, it is perpetually problematic for customers. As a software
developer, I view Java as a fad which has fallen flat, creating more problems
than it solves, getting worse rather than better over time.

Wanda, Wei Ji is correct on her post. IE8 might be working with the
current level of AC, but it is NOT supported. The next release of TSM (V6.3)
and the AC that comes with it WILL support IE8. IE9 will not yet be
supported with V6.3.
