Re: TSM tapes out of Sink with Library manager

2001-07-24 Thread Nicholas Cassimatis

Remember - you can't checkin a tape as scratch if TSM has records of data
on it. IE, if the volume is in a storage pool, has an database backup on
it, or other situation where TSM knows the tape is in use. You can,
however, check it in a Private, then check it back out and have the library
eject it. This makes sure that TSM knows where the tape is.

With a vault (and an outside company maintaining it, and maybe another
group handling tape management - I/O work, I recomend auditing your vault
every 2 months, or more frequently, if possible.

Re: TSM tapes out of Sink with Library manager

2001-07-23 Thread David Longo

I have a 3575 but have had similar problem occaisionally.

Do your operators actually check that the tapes on the "offsite"
list all came out of library? That was our problem here, they didn't
do a thorough check and every now and then a tape wouldn't come
out for various reasons yet they did not let me know.

With the large Bulk station on the 3494 you may not have same problem
but with 3575 I nailed it down to two specific problems.

1. Tape has not completed dismounting when MOVE DRM
command is run and thereby can't check this tape out.

2. The operators sometimes reply too slow or fast to the REPLY
messages (not sure which) when MOVE DRM is processing tapes
out our I/O slot. When I look at actlog I see that is says "remove tape
from slot xxx" instead of the I/O slot and they reply to this. This
makes DRM think tape is processed normally AND removes it from
Q LIBVOL, *SM thinks it is gone, but it is still in library.

Basically a good check of actlog will show what happened and
checking operations procedures and checks will reduce or
eliminate problem.

James,

I have run into a similar situation with my 3494 in that TSM says a tape is
in the vault, offsite, and it's actually still in the library. The command
that others have given you, mtlib -l /dev/lmcp0 -qI, shows the tape as FF00.
But if I try to check it in it says it's not in the library. Yet I can go to
the library and query for that tape and sure enough it's there. If I try and
remove it with TSM it also says it's not there.

Does anyone know how to remove a tape from the library by using the console
that's attached? I haven't seen anything but that doesn't mean it can't be
done.

I wish I knew why this keeps happening..All I need is a disaster in the
computer room with some offsite tapes still in the library.

The way to know the tapes that are physically in the library is: mtlib
-l/dev/lmcp0 -qI
The last letter is an uppercase i. If you want to put it to a file just:
mtlib -l/dev/lmcp0 -qI>/tmp/yourfilename

I was wondering if anyone has encountered this situation.

Environment: two TSM servers running on RS6000 v 3.7.4
Sharing the Same 3494 library

It appears that the library manager database is out of sync.
I run a checkin scratch of a range of vol sers and TSM says it can't check
in about ten because they are not scratches.
When I attempt to use the mtlib command to eject the tapes library manager
says they are not in the library?
Does anyone have a way to get the inventory from the library and put it to
a file so I can compare it with what TSM thinks it has in the library?

The more recent Library Manager software has a Manage Import/Export Volumes
menu, wherein Manage Insert Volumes claims ejectability.
