Hi Steve, We don't want to change existing behavior or any customer using this could break. We won't get into designing it on the ADSM-L. :-) Thanks for the RFE! Del, I opened an RFE for this, #99603. Thanks, -steve Although now I'm wondering if the 2 couldn't just be merged into one parm? If the percentage was identifying the estimated percentage of data sent after data reduction, 25 would tell TSM to take 25% of the actual data size to use for its calculation, but 125 would basically tell TSM to calculate based on an increase in the actual size by 25%. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU] On Behalf Of Del Hoobler Sent: Thursday, January 12, 2017 9:30 AM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] ANS1311E (RC11) Server out of data storage space - container pool Hi Steve, Yes... something along the lines of what was done for growth during backups (i.e. the reverse problem): /ADJUSTKBtsmestimate=numkb /ADJUSTPERcenttsmestimate=numpercent Reference: http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSER7G_8.1.0/db.sql/dps_ref_opt_backupoptional.html If you get a chance, please open an RFE for this: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/?BRAND_ID=352 I recommend making it a generic request (for any type of backup) and cite SQL as the example use case. Thanks, Del. An interim solution might be a cfg parm that allows us to specify a percentage of data reduction that TDP would use. So we could tell TDP to assume a 75% total data reduction to factor into its calculation. -steve -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU] On Behalf Of Del Hoobler Sent: Thursday, January 12, 2017 7:47 AM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] ANS1311E (RC11) Server out of data storage space - container pool Hi Steve, It's a great question. ANS1311E (RC11) Server out of data storage space - container pool
BA client 7.1.3 TDP client 7.1.4 TSM server 7.1.7 Doing some testing of SQL TDP with container pools. Getting ~ 95% data reduction (client level compression & dedupe). Seeing this ANS1311E error on a 3TB database. It should barely fit the free space in the container pool if dedupe/compression is ignored, and easily fit once dedupe/compression are factored in. My question is whether there is a client/server version combination that is smart enough to know that based on the compress/dedupe a backup is getting, to go ahead and attempt the backup? Is there a TDP 8.1 coming out anytime soon? Hi all, A client is set to backup to disk storage pool with enough free space. Furthermore the next storage pool is a sequential tape pool with more than enough max scratch volumes. dsmsched.log shows that client schedule starts and connects successfully to server. It continues examining client domains for incremental backup. I would verify that the management class/copy group you are using indeed points to the disk storage pool you are intending to use (check for typo's in the name, etc) Otherwise, check the q inclexcl list and make sure those files aren't being diverted to an alternate management class. ANS5092S Server out of data storage space
Hi, Anyone has experience this kind of error ? I do backup data file and it resulted ANS5092S Server out of data storage space. I've checked the Read Write volume utilization and it below 25 %. But weirdly, I can do backup system state and archive using the correct volume. I did check the Backup Copy destionation, it's already allocated to the right storage pool. BR, Martin

You likely have a shortage of actually usable volumes. See that message in http://people.bu.edu/rbs/ADSM.QuickFacts for our combined experience with it. Richard Sims
Re: ANS5092S Server out of data storage space
Hello Martin, It is possible you are running backups to default management class (for example, to backuppool), which has no volumes defined. I think, you need to check type of backup data and Include/Exclude list carefully. Regards, Grigori G. Where does your directory management class go? It could be the case that the storage location used as the destination of your directory management class is full. That would explain being able to successfully run commands that aren't tied to the DIRMC. The dirmc option specifies the management class of directories you back up and does not effect archived directories. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ads...@vm.marist.edu] On Behalf Of Sabar Martin Hasiholan Panggabean Sent: Monday, May 25, 2009 4:56 AM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: [ADSM-L] ANS5092S Server out of data storage space Hi, Anyone has experience this kind of error ? Re: ANS5092S Server out of data storage space
Hi, I've discovered the problem. But, I don't know yet if this is something bug or what ? I go to Backup Archive GUI - Edit - Preferences - Under General tab, I unticked the Backup or Restore NTFS Security Information option. I retry the backup and it works just fine. What I'm not sure what activity or changes from the OS that causing this problem since previously it just runs well using this option ticked. I'm afraid when I go on using this preferences I might not able to restore the security information of data file that I've backup using this option. Is there any solution for this problem ? Re: ANS5092S Server out of data storage space
Thank You everyone (especial to Richard for the reference link) for such a good explanation and reference regarding this problem. As a result, now I am using only 1 management class for one domain policy. For rotating which storage pool to allocate for my daily/weekly/monthly I just need to update the copy destination and re-activate the police set. Server out of data storage space
We have TSM 5.3.5 for Windows and suddenly we start getting the error “ANS1329S Server out of data storage space”. The clients giving this error are assigned to a Disk storage pool and afterward the data are moving to a tape. We checked all possible parameters and find nothing wrong. The storage pool is having plenty of space. Can anybody help? Thanks Pambos Kyriakides Storage and Database Administration Systems Support Group, I.T.Division Bank of Cypus Pcl. ANS1329S (RC29) Server out of data storage space..... But not really!
Has anyone encountered the subject message? We saw it today in a Oracle RMAN backup... what I think happened is, at the time the backup script started, there was not enough space in the ORACLE_DISK pool, nor in the ORACLE_LTO2 pool which is next in the heirarchy. Other sessions of the same job were still working, and we added scratches and ran a migration while this backup job was still running. The script terminated much later, I think when the other sessions finished... but why couldn't it recover and use the newly available disk space or scratch tapes? There isn't a whole lot of detail in the TDP manual about how server space gets reserved and allocated... but it seems from experience that TDP looks for enough space to hold the entire full backup. Can anyone confirm this? TIA Robin Sharpe Berlex Labs

Did you check the setting of the maxscratch on the tapepool, and then check to see how many tapes are in use? Saw this issue with UDB backup. It justed looked at the size of the disk spool space at the start of backup. Re: ANS1329S (RC29) Server out of data storage space..... But not really!
Yes, I checked all the pertinent things... at the time the message was issued, the disk pool had 85GB available, the tape pool had over 600GB available (on FILLING volumes), and there were 4 scratches up for grabs. The tape pool has maxscratch=999, and there are only 55 volumes currently in the pool. Maximum size threshold for the disk pool is No Limit. The database being backed up is a total of about 89GB, but there are several table spaces, and I doubt that the object being backed up was 85GB. Other objects from the same backup that succeeded earlier were around 18GB. Couple things I don't know: - how to determine the size of the current object (only see that after it is done) - how does RMAN determine the object sizes? - what size does TDP/API reserve? size of entire data base? (makes sense) - why doesn't it move on to the tape pool? (my guess is, once it tries to allocate to disk, it stays on disk, unlike the BA client) Anyone know of any tech resources (presentations, white papers, etc.) that explain the process TDP/API use to request space? (BTW, my TSM server is 5.2.3.2, TDP 5.2, API 5.1.5, BA client 5.1.1) Robin Sharpe Berlex Labs Ben Bullock [EMAIL PROTECTED] .COMTo: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Sent by: ADSM: cc: Dist StorSubject: Manager Re: ANS1329S (RC29) Server out of data storage space. Jack, Do you have client side compression switched on on these clients? We sometimes get this message when compression is on but compressalways is yes (default). What happens is that a file grows during compression and doesn't fit in the space the server has reserved for it. Hi, I get the following error message ANS1311E Server out of data storage space in TSM (Tivoli storage manager) 5.1 in dsmsched.log and the backup fails though I have more than 4GB space in the only drive C: on my windows 2000 machine. I pointed you to detailed diagnostic information in the README file, and offered to have you send me the results so that I can get a better understanding of the problem. Once the ODBC driver is set up correctly, it will work as I have already shown you. 2) While it may work okay, I do not recommend using the wzrdhlpr.exe file that ships with the TSM server, as it is not intended for end-user use. Instead, you should be using the administrative command line interface that ships with the TSM client, dsmadmc.exe. 3) To read the file murali, get rid of the imports for java.io.InputStream and InputStreamReader, and get rid of the is and reader variables (and all lines refering to those variables). Instead, use FileReader. You can also get rid of the declaration for process. Also, uncomment the code at the end of the try block. 4) exec() launches the command in a separate process but does not wait for that process to end. Therefore you should use the process's waitFor() method to make the parent process wait for the child process to finish before processing continues. Note that waitFor() throws InterruptedException. Also, make sure to use the /c option after cmd. import java.io.FileReader; ... try { ... Check the scratch staus of your Tape Library. Add some scratch tapes to the library. This happens when the disk storage is full and there is no place in the Tapepool to migrate the disk pool. Also pump up the # of scratch count in the Tapepool to a high number. Also, uncomment the code at the end of the try block. 4) exec() launches the command in a separate process but does not wait for that process to end. Therefore you should use the process's waitFor() method to make the parent process wait for the child process to finish before processing continues. Note that waitFor() throws InterruptedException. Also, make sure to use the /c option after cmd. import java.io.FileReader; ... try { ... String command = cmd /c dsmadmc -id=raibeck -password=bab5com select * from sessions murali; Runtime.getRuntime().exec(command).waitFor(); br = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(murali)); System.out.println(br = + br); String line; while ((line = br.readLine())!=null) { System.out.println(line:+line); } } catch(InterruptedException intex) { System.out.println(intex.getMessage()); } ... 5) You may find it desirable to add the -commadelimited or -tabdelimited option to dsmadmc, which will help in parsing the resulting output. Murali, If the data from the disk pool is not going to a tape pool but the data is going to another machine. I would check the network connection and also if that machine is up and running. If both checks out fine, then chech to see if there is enough space on the target machine. Are you mapping a drive to another machine? I would unmap and remap the drive. Murali, Sorry, I am reading too much into your e-mail. I just want to be clear on this. We have a TSM client that is backing up to a TSM server. Server out of data storage space
Hello all, This morning I noticed a node still in session with the server, which just finished after 9 hours. My first thought is that the switch setting has changed because the NIC is still set to 100/Full. I need to have someone check that, but I also found this. A messag in the client log as follows: 10/03/2001 00:34:27 ANS1311E Server out of data storage space. The log on the server has this message: 10/03/01 00:28:06 ANR0534W Transaction failed for session 352 for node CP-ITS-DOMAPP01 (WinNT) - size estimate exceeded and server is unable to obtain additional space in storage pool NOTES_DPOOL. The disk pool is not full, not even close. And let's make things clear up front, NOTHING has changed on the client or server. I do see the client is still at a lower level version of 3.1.0.7. I know this is not a supported client, and I have told them to upgrade, obviously with no luck so far. The server by the way is AIX 4.3.3 TSM 4.1.2. Has anyone any experience with this. The disk pool is set to overflow to tape when files are larger than 4GB. No tape mounts were noted. This has worked fine since the server was brought online a few years ago. Re: Server out of data storage space
This is caused by the client (or agent) not requesting enough pre-allocated space in the diskpool for the data that it actually needs to send. We ran into this on both Tandem clients and SQL agents. On the SQL there is an estimated change percentage parameter that you can use and it will pre-allocate that amount of space in the diskpool. On the Tandem client you set objectsize and it preallocates the space accordingly. If you are using an agent I would look for something like that. If it is a B/A client then you should look to see if compression is turned on. Re: Server out of data storage space
Hello, I have had this error in the past and was told that it was a bug in the api server/ protocol used to communicate with the tsm server. An estimate of how much space is needed to back up a file is sent...but there is a problem with the protocol engine for the transfer...if you send many small files and then a large file..it causes the problem. I was told that there was no fix for it...just to redo backup. Maybe this has changed?? Bonnie -Original Message- From: Gill, Geoffrey L. Re: Server out of data storage space
We had this problem with disk cashing on. When the disk pool was full of old data. Enough was cleaned for the estimated size. Then the client sent a larger file (usually compressing a compressed file) and it would fail for not enough space. We turned disk caching off and the problem never occurred again. -- Phillip Ford Senior Software Specialist Corporate Computer Center Schering-Plough Corp. Re: Server out of data storage space
Years ago there was a problem with communication between the client and server. The client would tell the server the file was a certain size and then proceed to send a larger file. Most often happened with compressed files being compressed again by dsmc (compress yes option). I know this was fixed but I don't know if the fix was on the client or on the server. Did you recently change something on the client? Does the dsmerror.log file have the error message? If so, it should also have an accompanying message indicating which file failed. To answer questions. No, nothing on the client has changed at all. Compression was on so I decided to turn it off to see what happens tonight. I did restart the services to catch these changes. Here is what the error log shows as it relates to that specified file. It is not that big, 3Gb, so it should have went to the disk pool. There was 35gb of other files that did not have problems. 10/03/2001 00:34:26 ANS1228E Sending of object '\\cp-its-domapp01\e$\notes\data\bizopsh4.nsf' failed 10/03/2001 00:34:27 ANS1311E Server out of data storage space Hopefully the compression option will fix this. I have noticed some posts related to compression and was wondering what everyones thoughts were on it. Geoff, I deal primarily with backups directly to tape and have seen this error message when the number of tapes in the volume is equal to the Maximum Scratch Volumes Allowed parameter for that storage group. I increase this value and backups go on. It might be helpful to see the storage pool details. Martha MIME-Version: 1.0 Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2001 07:11:54 -0700 From: Gill, Geoffrey L. In article 005201c14c1e$68f6d020$1902a8c0@lipstr, Kelly J. Lipp [EMAIL PROTECTED] says: Years ago there was a problem with communication between the client and server. Lipp Hello Kelly I do not think that this problem was fixed. I believe that most folks just stopped using the cache option. It would be nice if IBM/TIVOLI would fix this by allowing the server to hold up data flow long enought to release some cached space or move to the next storage pool.Andy, Mike can you tell us if we should request this or is it in the offical request list? In the mean time there appears to be a new option in the latest client level which might help some folks. There is now an option to allow one to define a pattern for files that will not be compressed. So one can exclude the .zip .gz etc files. At least on the windows platform. len
