Re: [AFMUG] MTU settings on CFIP Lumina FODU - v2.71.07

2019-09-09 Thread Matt Corcoran
Careful! While the Lumina does support Jumbo and baby Jumbo frames, it only
supports them when the interface is running in 1000BaseT. If your Ethernet or
fiber switches to 100BaseT for any reason the MTU limit is around 1514.So
if you use Jumbo frames, you have to lock the interface to 1000baseT
negotiation or else a minor cable problem can cause a major MTU mismatch issue.

Re: [AFMUG] MTU settings on CFIP Lumina FODU - v2.71.07

2019-09-09 Thread George Skorup
Nope, bigger.

Up to 4094 concurrent VLAN traffic allows building many port-to-port
networks paths for specific client services;
Jumbo frame size supports up to 9728 bytes, which allows using longer
header info (VLAN, MPLS) and transmitting more useful content and less
headers, thus gaining on total throughput;

So ports that are in the same bridge group and you do not want traffic

Check out the Cummins Onan 5.5HGJAE-2144. Since it is designed for RV type

I haven't had a chance to use one of these in production, but several
customers I've talked to at packetflux have reported using a RV generator
with good success. You'll need to arrange for sufficient ventilation
through louvers, etc.. The exhaust can be through an extended tailpipe.

Most of the larger sites with very large gensets, including all of
Verizon's and AT"s LATA switching sites have generators indoors. It
sounds like you better put the exhaust and intake pretty high on the
building. I think most with transfer switches, exercise and such are 7kw to
10kw.

I would think that Ecogen would work here too and they likely have an
indoor adapter kit.

Pretty big question. Are you talking about the OLT SFP, or what you plug it
into?

There is a pretty big range here. I'm most familiar with Calix. Kind of like
a switch that deploys, manages, and configures the WAN of each connected ONT.
It also manages firmware for the connected devices. Besides that it is a well
featured switching platform. I'm sure there are switching platforms with
similar features and I'd guess they are similarly priced.

[AFMUG] generator suggestions

Hello fellow borg members,

We will be building an off grid (solar) tower site at 10,000 feet MSL that
receives over 500 inches of snow and has a typical settled snow depth of 10
feet. (I know, we are crazy, but people need internet lol ;)

Because of the deep snow it will be necessary to put the generator inside
the telecom shelter that we are building, otherwise it would get buried.
It also needs to be propane because at that altitude and temp diesel fuel
will gel up and refuse to start. At other sites we have typically used a
Generac Ecogen 15kW propane generator. Everyone I talk to says "you can't
put a generator indoors" but in this case I have to, and this isn't living
space this is a telecom shelter on the top of a mountain. The Ecogen seems
un-good for this application because it doesn't seem to have one small
exhaust port, it's the whole side of the unit.

So i'm looking for a propane generator that is:
1. 5kW or bigger
2. has 2 wire start (it needs to be smart enough to handle the choke and
throttle etc. to start when i close a relay)
3. can be installed inside the shelter
4. is super reliable because i don't want to visit this site in the winter

any ideas??

My wife is busy (for months) planning some travel for this fall. She told me I
am not taking my laptop. Too big, too heavy etc etc. (I actually left it on a
train at Heathrow once, had enough time to go catch that same train and found
it.)But I digress.

She says I can have an iPad. I acquiesce due to the fact that she micro
manages these trips and I don’t have to do a thing. She likes it that way and
I like it that way. I just go where I am told to go and I pay. She makes sure
I have clean clothes and the proper tickets needed for travel as well as hotel
rooms. It is actually pretty wonderful. She teams up with my UK son-in-law as
he is like this too.

But again, I digress.

I know almost zero about iPads. I need a human size keyboard. Hopefully one
with keys that physically move. I would like to be able to plug in an HDMI
monitor too. Mouse?

Dear Borg, what are my options?

There is a OLT on a SFP+ device that’s AFAIK vaporware… I wish it existed! So
many uses

Pretty big question. Are you talking about the OLT SFP, or what you plug it
into?
There is a pretty big range here. I'm most familiar with Calix. Kind of like
a switch that deploys, manages, and configures the WAN of each connected ONT.
It also manages firmware for the connected devices. Besides that it is a well
featured switching platform. I'm sure there are switching platforms with
similar features and I'd guess they are similarly priced.

GPON uses a TDMA system.
The OLT handles the timing and scheduling. That's why you can't use a standard
switch. The PON module is dumb and takes orders from the OLT.

Re: [AFMUG] OT iPad question

2019-09-09 Thread Daniel White
iPadOS is going to bridge that gap a lot more and should be out of beta
in the next 30 days.

Apple doesn't have a touchscreen laptop, so in many ways I can
appreciate them taking their time on this.  Windows with touchscreens
sucked until they made the Surface.

Which is fine.  I used to say an iPad isn’t a small computer, it’s a

the average person is no longer interested in having a computer, they
want a smartphone, and/or a handheld Netflix viewing device.  But for
actual computer work, phones and tablets are pretty lame.  Not sure
where a Chromebook fits.

All the ports you need

With two high-definition video ports, a gigabit Ethernet port, four
USB 3.0 ports, and an audio output, you have all the connections you
need. Transform your Surface into a desktop PC by plugging in your
Dock with the Surface Connect cable.

fall.  She told me I am not taking my laptop.  Too big, too
heavy etc etc.  (I actually left it on a train at Heathrow
once, had enough time to go catch that same train and found
it.)But I digress.

She says I can have an iPad.  I acquiesce due to the fact that
she micro manages these trips and I don’t have to do a thing.
She likes it that way and I like it that way.  I just go where
I am told to go and I pay.  She makes sure I have clean
clothes and the proper tickets needed for travel as well as
hotel rooms.  It is actually pretty wonderful.  She teams up
with my UK son-in-law as he is like this too.

But again, I digress.

I know almost zero about iPads.  I need a human size

would like to be able to plug in an HDMI monitor too.  Mouse?

Dear Borg, what are my options?

Dock to a nice large monitor, a normal sized keyboard and mouse.
Be nice to drop it into a slot when I am at the office.

Would this be beneficial to put, say, all APs on a tower to the same
horizon value to help mitigate looped SMs?

Essentially "The basic idea of split horizon bridging is to make
traffic arriving over some port never be sent out some set of ports"
So ports that are in the same bridge group and you do not want traffic
forwarded between them then set the horizon value all the same.

I have a bridge at a tower that has a bunch of VLANs on it (going

an AP acting up and want to separate communication between the
VLAN's on that bridge

I could enable IP Firewall on that bridge, but I don't know what
the Firewall rules would be for it to isolate the interfaces
(VLANs) on the bridge

Re: [AFMUG] OT iPad question

2019-09-09 Thread Daniel White
As others have said, and with your known aversion to Apple products, the
Surface Pro is exactly what you are looking for.

If you go the iPad route... you will need/want the Pro version.  Apple
makes a keyboard that is a cover that I actually really like.  I'd
spring for the pencil as well - for things like SolidWorks you will
probably really enjoy it.

On the 11" vs 12.9" I go with the smaller one personally... but to each
their own.  Go to the Apple Store in SLC and give them a try.

BTW, there is an Apple event tomorrow which may announce new hardware
but it is unlikely on the iPad line.  They will probably be talking
about and giving the launch date for iPadOS which lots of people have
been waiting for (including me).

You just described a laptop.

Also, does it have to literally be an iPad, i.e. an Apple product?  Or
just a tablet?  My son has some sort of Android tablet.  You could get
something like a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6.

Or if size is the only issue, get a compact laptop. Dell XPS 13 is
nice.  By the time you add a cover and a physical keyboard and mouse
to a tablet, it walks and quacks like a laptop.  You wouldn’t want to
leave it on the train though.
