It is standard practice in the camping world to take a water jug
(of whatever type), and pour a cap-full of bleach into it. You
then swish it around to coat the sides of the jug & then dump
out any remainder. Then fill with water. The residual bleach will
kill the nasties for a week or two (at least).

Re: [AFMUG] OT rechargable

2020-06-07 Thread Mathew Howard
ha... that would be something to see! I think my car has somewhere around
7000 of them in it...

But yeah, as far as I know, the whole lithium battery burning down
buildings thing mainly comes from lithium polymer batteries... and
generally people either using the wrong kind of charger, or charging
damaged batteries. I don't think too many people worry about charging their
cell phones unattended, and I don't think there's any realistic risk from
something like a cordless drill battery.

Re: [AFMUG] OT: we were snookered

2020-06-07 Thread chuck
My nephew, who is 4 years younger than I and was essentially by brother, was
dragged to a sink by a cranky nun and told to wash his mouth with soap. He
started taking bites out of the bar of soap and chewing. She freaked out and
started smacking him on the top of his head telling him to spit it out.

That incident was actually written up in a book by a comic named John Callahan.
However he said it happened to him. My nephew was in the same class as his
brother.

From Wikipedia:

  Chemistry, performance, cost and safety
characteristics vary across LIB types. Handheld electronics
mostly use lithium polymer batteries (with
a polymer gel as electrolyte) with lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO
  2) as
cathode material, which offers high energy density, but
presents safety risks,[16] especially when
damaged. Lithium
  iron phosphate (LiFePO
4), lithium ion manganese oxide battery (LiMn
2O
4, Li
2MnO
3, or LMO), and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (LiNiMnCoO
2 or
NMC) offer lower energy density but longer lives and less
likelihood of fire or explosion. Such batteries are
widely used for electric tools, medical equipment, and other
roles. NMC and its derivatives are widely used in electric
vehicles.

volt battery that is probably just 2 c cells welded with heat shrink.

Our new locators and sondes use a voltage a bit higher than most 3.3 volt
lithium. They like 3.6 volts I believe. So the smaller batteries are adapted
to fit the sonde, but the charger for them requires the adapter.

They really should make the charger such that the larger batts cannot be
put in it.

Just glad we didn’t have a fire. It did blow the corner of a piece of
shelving.
