Re: [AFMUG] Stopping tower rust

Apparently regular steel and stainless steel both “rust”. But stainless forms
a thin stable protective layer of chromium oxide, while regular steel turns to
unstable iron oxide which just grows and grows.

I would assume this wasn't a slip of the tongue. Just surprised that anyone

I assume Robert will respond with the correct info but he did specifically say
it was attached to the house in the original post. I read it to say that there
was a window with an opening of 3x3'. I assume this means that there aren't
any doors directly between the solarium and the house which could be left open
to assist with the heat transfer.

You can put in two vents; one as high as you can, and a second as low as
you can. Hot solarium air will rise and move into the colder space on
the other side, while at the same time drawing air in from the bottom
vent. This is as passive as you can get. If you want to augment it, you
could put a solar powered exhaust fan at the top vent to force the
issue.

My parents had a "Wilkening Fireplace" that worked on this principle,

Cool, ( or heat ) That has me thinking the right way, could even build
something using one of the R refrigerants that boil much lower temps?

I have solar there but don't want to waste power on that if I can do
some kind of passive pump.

We eventually will have about 7K watts more solar there but this is just
to take advantage of the situation this winter to keep the house side
from freezing up so hard.

This place has basically been abandoned for 10 years...

I had to Google what you all meant by "whirlybirds".  That's a turbine
vent.  There are no birds involved, guys.

I wonder if putting the intake lower in the solarium and the

With any solution where you're moving air, consider how to return cold
air from the house back into the solarium.  You don't want negative
pressure in there pulling in the outside air.  Maybe use two of the
solar fans so you have an in+out.

If you're willing to do wiring, a solar panel, charge controller and
battery kit will give you reliable power (as long as specced out for the
load) and a 12/24V thermostat and fan will get that air moving.

[AFMUG] Moving heat without power.

2020-11-04 Thread Robert Andrews

Hi folks,
I have a solarium attached to an unheated house and there is a bathroom
window about 3x3' between them open. Does anyone have any magic tricks
up their sleeves to move the warm solarium heat into the house without
using power? The temp difference the other day was 106 in the solarium
and 55 in the house.

Best,
Robert

Yes.
Approved Optics and a few others I could look up if needed. - Not actually
approved but the optics are good. I just got a quote from a new vendor at
half the AO price.

Ubnt GPON SFP for the OLT is around $100, but other vendors are 6-7x that
amount. I doubt that means they contain 6-7x the magic pixie dust. Are there
third parties that can sell vendor-specific keyed GPON SFP’s like FS does for
Cisco/Juniper/whatever for standard SFP’s?

Re: [AFMUG] Stopping tower rust

2020-11-04 Thread Bill Prince
There are different grades of stainless steel. Some of the lower grades
can develop some light rust. Also, if the joints were welded, you don't
know what material was used for the weld.

I would at least cover the rusting parts with zinc chromate.

We have a stainless steel tower that’s probably about 30 years old. Good shape.
But I noticed some minor rust developing on the surface of some cross members
and a few climbing pegs.

What’s the best way to stop this and protect the tower?

Good to see that statehood won but we're going to be short a few Senators
to make that happen over here on the mainland, at least it is looking that
way. GA is going to have some of the most expensive Senate runoff races

So, our industry is coming off the free mad cash (((those guys))) push with
four years of (((these guys))) free for all. Either way this goes theres a
reckoning coming over the next 4 years.

And ol elon is out there terrifying WISPS (BTW, boss is seriously in the market
if anybody wants to cash out) that the skynet is going to take over.

No matter how this next couple weeks go, the landscape is going to change for
businesses.

I anticipate either way another massive influx of COVID cash for internets in
the next 6 months to make sure we are ready for a remote nation upon the next
disaster. I also think the "broadband" definition is going to scale back now
that so much of the nation had to operate the critical components of society
without unlimited bandwidth.

A multitude of operators are going to go bankrupt because of the covid related
hardships, real or imagined, so some smaller players are going to get bigger,
some bigger players are going to absorb, and some new players will hit the
market.

also, does PR even want to be a state? I never knew for sure. I think they
should be if they want, but why would you want to gain the responsibility of
statehood when you already have the benefit
