Re: [AFMUG] OT NEC wire sizes

Well, then I suggest using a few 3” sections of 24ga wire somewhere along the
way in a metal box. If the smoke comes out and the motor stops you know what
happened.

Strongly recommend the Packetflux Site Monitor. It just freaking works.

Mikrotik would be a distant second for this purpose, but in a pinch it
would work.

[AFMUG] 800-GIGE-SS-HV vs 800-CAT6-SS for customer installs.

2021-01-15 Thread Carl Peterson
We primarily install Cambium 450SMs but now also have one LTU POP which has
moved from Beta to production - using LTU PRO CPE. Trying to standardize
on one surge suppressor for client installs. What are the pros and cons of
each? Primary concern is integrity of the connection (CRCs, errors, etc).

2021-01-15 Thread Carl Peterson
I think the LTU pro is 24V 2 pair but I'd have to double check that.
LTU rocket is 24 or 48V 4 pair but works on 48v two pair just fine as long
as it is really short - We power 4 off a netonix 6 mini on 48V (two pair)
with 10' pre-made AXIS outdoor patch cables. (Have a few hundred from a
camera job we did once).

Perhaps an update of the chart is warranted?

Tech spec page for the 800-GIGE-SS-HV shows "

But the chart does not show that or perhaps GIGE-SS-HV on the chart isn't
the same as 800-GIGE-SS-HV?
800-CAT6-SS does not seem to be on the chart at all

one uses tvs diodes which is faster response but higher chance of crc

2021-01-15 Thread Chuck McCown via AF
That chart is ancient. And yes, at one time Motorola’s own surge suppressor
was causing errors. I worked out what was causing the problem and did the
GIGE-SS. It was a full 8 wire surge suppressor where the older 444 had 4 wires
for POE and 4 wires for data. It worked better than the Motorola product but
when Cambium made a design change it still was the source of errors. So the
CAT-6 was borne out of that experience.

Perhaps an update of the chart is warranted?

Tech spec page for the 800-GIGE-SS-HV shows "
a.. Ethernet CRC error correction circuit"
But the chart does not show that or perhaps GIGE-SS-HV on the chart isn't the
same as 800-GIGE-SS-HV?
800-CAT6-SS does not seem to be on the chart at all

  Chuck,

What is the 800-GIGE-SS-HV recommended for then? I thought that was the SS
that specifically worked with Cambium and helped minimize CRC errors.

Lazy this morning. Clicked on my hulu app on my desk top. Started watching

[AFMUG] Isolate dc battery

2021-01-15 Thread TJ Trout
I want to add a 'b' a/c power using a inverter with transfer switch, this
inverter will pass utility power unless it fails then it will change to 48v
input.

I want to add a second battery bank to power this inverter but the inverter
does not charge, can I 'charge' the new battery from the existing dc plant
while keeping it isolated? Would a diode or a dcdc converter work best?

Trying to avoid the second bank feeding back because they are different
chemistry and internal resistance.

Yeah, big ass diodes on heat sinks. My exeltech inverter (one of them) came
with the diodes built in. You lose a volt but it is worth it.

[AFMUG] Easy and Cheap DC Distribution

I have a bunch of devices in a rack which all take a 12v 1.5A input on a

transformer blocks.  Is there an easy and cheap way to do DC
Distribution for all these devices.  I really don't want a bunch of
screw terminals and jumper wires that I'd have to build.  Does something
exist like a PDU panel but for little connectors.  I'm thinking maybe
back in the day they used to have them at Store kiosks where they had a
bunch of Demo cameras etc.  Maybe the Xmas villages where you have a

[AFMUG] router programming

2021-01-15 Thread Chuck McCown via AF
It is looking like I may be starting yea another new ISP. DIA on fiber.
Upstream provider announcing my IPs and doing BGP for me.

Router(s) feeding Calix E7-20
DHCP
DNS
What else do I need?
Router based NAT or server based NAT?
Server based router?

Like to keep it simple but fully redundant.

(All the infrastructure, DC, building, Generator, hvac etc etc is easy, not
asking about any of that).

A pair of routers for redundancy. I was just going to call Dennis and say “fix
me up” but I am a bit gun shy about MT anymore. Thinking Juniper but nobody
here has much experience with programing edge/core routing irrespective of the
brand of router.

Anyone want to consult on this and do our router setup?--

traffic levels?

RB4011 x 2 with the 3rd party HA script will give you active-backup
redundancy with ~30 sec fail over, (fast/easy to deploy, not 'best' option
tho, that would be ibgp etc) I would avoid CCR hardware currently.

Probably can't be faulted for going Juniper tho..

Re: [AFMUG] router programming

2021-01-15 Thread TJ Trout
Buy two rb4011 + one 10g switch like crs type

Connect rb4011 #1 to rb4011 #2 via ether8 (example)

load this script
https://github.com/svlsResearch/ha-mikrotik

Configure router 1 with dhcp, nat etc

Router 1 will automagically clone to router2 (config).

When one router can't reach the other it will take over the active role.

For distribution, I like the screw-terminal blue sea systems fuse blocks. I
use the 5025 and 5026 in a LOT of applications.

For power supply and distro, Jamie's suggestion may be the best option.

think you will find rb4011 or the baltic vengeance to be a good balance

Hi Chuck;

Sure.  I know of someone.  You can reach out to him.  Really good.
ecbethel at yahoo.com.  He can set you on the right path to a very
simple, reliable and cost effective solution.  In NC right now.

What else do I need?
Router based NAT or server based NAT?
Server based router?
Like to keep it simple but fully redundant.

A pair of routers for redundancy.  I was just going to call Dennis and

Juniper but nobody here has much experience with programing edge/core
routing irrespective of the brand of router.

Anyone want to consult on this and do our router setup?

Hi Chuck;

Take a look at IMSI's TurboProject.  It's not free, but very
inexpensive, perpetual license and is really good.  Microsoft Visio can
also do some types of GANTT chart using the wizards. What about
Lucidchart.  There is a free version.

Re: [AFMUG] vmware/veeam alternatives

2021-01-15 Thread Lincs Chel (AF Mug)

Hi;

Confused at your initial request and now these comments / observations
as to what you want and/or will miss.  Proxmox is a very cable solution
for what you may want to use it for.  However, it may not be that
forgiving if you have not planned your virtualization farm properly in
the beginning.

A critical thing to consider if you're looking to do live migrations and
the like is the storage options available.  Each has its advantages and
can do a wealth of stuff.  However, the more you wish to do live
migrations and stuff like that, the more you're going to need to use
either one of the OpenSource storage clustering types e.g. the GlusterFS
and Ceph storage types.  Or, use the ZFS file system.  In other words,
you will need to pick a storage type that supports the shared attribute
which will then give you the flexibility and capability of doing live
migrations.

If you are going to do a cluster farm for their PVE (Proxmox Virtual
Environment), then you will need to think about quorums (odd amount of
servers in the farm) and have a separate network. And if you have the
storage cluster, then it's recommended that this too also have their own
network.  A caveat is that you can't (or rather you should not) start to
build your PVE cluster with already provisioned PVE servers.  Hence have
a plan before diving in.

For backups, you can now use their Proxmox Backup server.  It's a
separate Proxmox server that is tightly integrated into the PVE. Or, you
can use a commercial product such StorWare VProtect.  They give you a 10
server user license for free. Bacula can also work. But the licensing
cost is expensive.  BareOS may offer a better pricing (if you need
support etc.)

Proper planning will lead to great results for which Proxmox can most
likely deliver the alternative you are seeking.

If you're going beyond 32 physical host servers (or PVE servers) and
wish to manage all using a single pane of glass concept, then this may
be an issue and/or limitation.

Proxmox has both of these featues.   Plus with a ceph backend storage
migration should become less of an issue as you effectively mirror
drives across cluster nodes.

If i had it to do over again with my incompetence and lack of motivation, i
probably would have learned something more robust than mt. I learned what
little i know around mt because i was too lazy to do the legwork in talking
the boss into dropping coin and mt was too user friendly with "everything
routing". Now my brain is less keen on soaking up new knowledge and we are
nearing a point that the random oddities of mt are getting to be too
problematic to let slide. Not to mention a product change this far into the

One of the biggest issues ive come across in mikrotik is its versatility.
When seeking out a consultant, everybody has a different idea on how best
