Re: [AFMUG] RJ45 crimpers

The ones we use have a flat blade to replace dykes and then there's a round
bit so you can get the jacket off. Works perfectly on Shireen cable.

Re: [AFMUG] RJ45 crimpers

2021-03-17 Thread Jan-GAMs
Getting the wires into the plugs is not easy, it was a complete PITA.
They (wires) would keep catching on something inside the plug.  Other
issue is getting them to go through and stay in the correct order.  The
only feature I liked about it was the jacket pushes into the connector
further allowing its capture once crimped to be better.  My normal time
to make a connector with ground wire is under 5 minutes and I'm old with
arthritis.  This pull-thru gizmo took many tries and over half an hour.
I put the Ubiquiti connector on the other end, simply because it's not
such a PITA!

really it's just a matter of getting used to a new process.

It's a superior termination and it's faster, everyone should use them.

Those crimpers arrived along with a box of pull-through plugs with
cable support brackets.  I found getting the wires past the
cable-support bracket to be such a pain I bent the bracket out of
the way.  Then I found getting the once aligned wires (not EZ)
into the crimper with the plug another time consuming task as I
had to cut the wires shorter just past the plug end.  The razor
missed part of the two outer wires, so this function too is not
very good.  Then I found using the round crimp slot to crimp the
bracket/cable support was not a good idea as it has a razor in the
middle.  Then in addition to all the above, there's no good place
to fasten a ground wire onto the new plugs.  I reverted back to
using the old non-pull-through plugs and the new crimpers just for
crimping.

So then I found that since the round hole has a razor in the
middle it must be for cutting the jacket off, it cuts into the
wires too.  So all those razor blades aren't useful at all.  Just
the racheting crimp part of the tool, it assures a correct amount
of crimp and it doesn't wobble.  At least my old crimper was
useful in scoring the jacket for removal.  Only works for some lan
cables, not all.

I still will have to carry: Crimpers, flush-cutting dykes,
rotating jacket-cutter, needle-nose plyers for crimping the ground
wire.  I guess it was too much to hope for in getting all of that
in one tool.

Re: [AFMUG] VPN issues

2021-03-17 Thread Steve Jones
I will pull full, extended pcaps at our edge router for the customer IP and
at the nearest network router for the customer and send them to them to
relay to their techs. At that point I require them to show where THEIR VPN
is failing, as they control both end points. This is after due diligence on
our network. Its almost always an end user issue, or junk IT staff that
misconfigured something somewhere. It is not the IT staff place to wash
their hands of their responsibility to the staff. I courteously relay that
to the customer. I let the customer know that until the IT does their due
diligence and identifies the VPN component failure, we cannot do anything.
I have them take their device off our network and bring up the VPN to see
if it is, in fact only happening on our network. At that point until the IT
staff does their job and provides detailed VPN server/client logs and
details of the VPN, there is nothing further we can do. Getting the staff
member (who is now non productive) directing their concern in the right
direction, at the IT staff, to their supervisors is pretty successful for
me.

It used to always be ALG in the old dlinks, Microsoft is running scared
right now that they are perceived to be not secure, god only knows what
theyre up to if its a software client VPN, Or its an IT douche who
"secures" the VPN by IP without bothering to ensure the client is on a
static IP, I love that one.

We also use slack but if Microsoft includes much of the functionality of slack

We love Google too much and have very few pain points so there is nothing

requirement driven movement. While we don’t have data points for these kinds of
movements, we are not seeing much push to move towards Google. This same
movement is pushing down to smaller and smaller organizations all the time. We
recently had a client with 3 employees move from Google to Microsoft’s Office
365 as they struggled with some of the gaps in the Google offering.

The Teams client has been problematic as I understand it, however, for a year,
our consultants feel it surpasses Zoom and Webex. We don’t see enough of Google
Meet for that to even be a comparison. A big benefit to Teams is that includes
the functionality of Slack (for the most part), Zoom, and shared file
systems/repositories. Additionally it is integrated into Outlook very well.

All this being said, there are always reasons for organizations to pick another
option. My wife’s firm has been using Google for 6-7 years, but they are
actively looking to move towards Microsoft, just hard to pull the trigger like
that in a year like 2020. There are several reasons, not the least of which
are:

1. You get an Office apps license for users that you pay extra for. It is
lots easier then managing separate Office and Google app licenses.
2. You get 1 TB of drive storage for each user allowing them to back up
their computer hard drives without having to purchase another license for
something to do that.
3. No need to have Slack and Teams, can do it all in Teams (they had this
before Hangout was mature enough)
4. No need to have Zoom and Teams can do it all in Teams (they had this
before Meet was mature enough)

Honestly, we really don’t see any 40 person organizations move to Google from
Office365. It is always the other way around. But obviously that is just our
experience so take that for what it’s worth. (not much 😊 )

Such useful information. Thanks. I've been breaking down the apples to apples
and and the only thing making me lean toward MS is the Azure AD angle. This way
I can manage all the Windows machines and they all have one login for pretty
much everything. That being said going Google its just one browser login for
everything.

Just my experience with Microsoft has been a clown show. I don't trust Google
an inch, but a lot of what they built was on the backs of open source and
interoperability so I respect that.

We work with a number of mid to enterprise sized corporate clients as part of
our consulting practice. Within those communities, Google’s toolset holds a
very small piece of the market, if even countable. Microsoft’s toolset, (Office
365 with Exchange, Teams, Sharepoint, Outlook, etc) seems to be very stable and
very secure. These organizations spend a lot of time looking at these kinds of
things.

Additionally, these same organizations are moving their applications
environments to AWS and Azure in large volume. We are seeing healthcare
organizations handling HIPAA and HITRUST requirements as well as strong PCI
requirement driven movement. While we don’t have data points for these kinds of
movements, we are not seeing much push to move towards Google. This same
movement is pushing down to smaller and smaller organizations all the time. We

I would suggest the Cisco 93180,  I am sure its too many ports for your needs

Bill,

Well that is the issue.  Could be anything.  Been working fine since June.  I have many many more people using VPN's with no issues.

But there is an issue on her link.  This is a fiber link BTW.  Her Internet works fine.

Her IT guys have washed their hands of it, pushing it all on me.  Not sure how I'm going to figure it out being I don't know what appliance she is using yet.  Even when I get that info, I'll have no access to it.  Doubt they are going to give me admin privileges on their equipment.  Also, I don't get the opportunity to see what errors are showing up on server logs.

I have no experience with Juniper, can you suggest the model jumber please,

Have you used fs.com switches? How long have you used them and

NAT stuff is harder to pin down, but for example we had someone who's VPN wouldn't work consistently through NAT on a UFiber Nano ONT, but when we bridged the ONT and moved NAT to a Mikrotik behind it magically everything worked.

I don’t need so many sfp+ ports oh well

How much would I expect to pay for Juniper for such configuration?
