Re: [AFMUG] OT metal detectors

2020-09-30 Thread Louis Arsenault
Our water guys can barely find the valves on top of the ground and to find
anything under the ground they use a poking stick until it hits something
then draw a blue line.
This is why we use a GPR to find the water lines but it will pick up almost
all the utilities.

We use one of these.

Re: [AFMUG] My solution

2020-09-10 Thread Louis Arsenault
FWIW I think you have an issue with the fiber mounting.

The "Ground Lug" is supposed to hold the Fiberglass strength members from
the drop cable. This helps keep the cable from getting pistoned in or
pulling out.
The copper line on the drop cable is a tracer and should not be connected
to anything at either end.
At least that is how I was taught.

Re: [AFMUG] good inexpensive OTDR

2021-03-11 Thread Louis Arsenault
I used a cheap Chinese one for many years. Other than the battery didn't
last it was fine for PTP and cable verification.

I have taken a new job are willing to spend the money on a better one. I
didn't really know what I was missing until I started looking.

Positives:

Remote access: Leave the OTDR in the Hut and remotely connect to it from my
phone. Great for one man troubleshooting. I am testing Teamviewer. Also
means I can have a monkey tech connect it to his phone hotspot and I can
remote into from my desk.
Live OTDR: being able to shoot with filtered 1625 even when the line is
currently in use.
Split Distribution splitter profiles: The network is using GPON with split
distribution taps. This is where most of the light keeps going but you get
a couple drop ports with like -20 output if you spec the splitter
correctly. The EXFO one I am looking at can set customer splitter/tap
profiles.
IOLM: Before I really understood how smart IOLM,I didn't want to pay for
it. It is very interesting how it works. It also still saves a sor file to
look at later and do trace compares.
Modular: This doesn't go for all of them but the ones I am looking at I can
rent a specific card for a month if I have a need that it can't currently
fill. Like RFC 6815 testing.
PDF Reports: not really my thing but someone might find it important.

Disadvantage:
Cost, nickel and dime you for _every_ feature.

Since I have to support a Dist Split network I really have no choice but to
spend the money on a better one I get several of the features
automatically but since I am already choosing to spend the money on the
better one might as well spend the money to get all the features I really
want.

[AFMUG] Windstream Porting / PIN

2021-05-04 Thread Louis Arsenault
Hey guys,

Windstream is fighting us every step of the way with moving numbers from
them.

I currently have 2 Customers that Windstream is rejecting the port due to
incorrect PIN.
When the Customers call windstream and try to get the pin.. Windstream
states there is no PIN for their acct.

I am not able to find anything on their landline phone bill that resembles
a PIN.

Anyone had any experience with figuring out the magic passphrase the
customers can tell Windstream to get the PIN or know of another way to get
the number to port.

Thanks,

Create a folder for each region.
Put all your pins for that region in the folder.
Right click on the folder and select properties.
Select Style, Color tab.
Under Icon select the the Color you want and it will change all pins to

Re: [AFMUG] Scammer pop ups

First thing that comes to mind is maybe the router on your service is
compromised and proxying or injecting data into your web browsing.
I would try to compare the HTML/Javascript for differences. Using something
like Google Chrome Dev Tools will give more info. To get to these press F12
when in chrome.

My favorite ad blocker is UBlock Origin.

Re: [AFMUG] Bench Testing PON

2019-06-27 Thread Louis Arsenault
I had to attenuate the signal. You can either do an inline attenuator or I
just grabbed an extra gpon splitter. IIRC I needed about 5db to get it to
work.

Re: [AFMUG] Mikrotik Firewall question

2019-09-07 Thread Louis Arsenault
I believe what you are looking for is split horizon.
https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:MPLSVPLS#Split_horizon_bridging
Essentially "The basic idea of split horizon bridging is to make traffic
arriving over some port never be sent out some set of ports"
So ports that are in the same bridge group and you do not want traffic
forwarded between them then set the horizon value all the same.

It would mitigate looped SM's. I use to prevent broadcast like rogue DHCP
server and Mikrotik Discovery.
