Well, we are probably not one of their traditional channels. I would think
they would appoint someone as the WISP sales manager.

Chuck,

Maybe you get special consideration! But my experience has been different.

I had requested a quote at WISPAPALOOSA, never heard back from them, Finally I
wanted to make decision so I filled out a online form on 1/20, I got 1 email
about they will be in touch, I left a message on the phone next day, nothing
after that.

Just before I posted here I did send them email stating them how nobody was
getting back to me, immediately after that email I did get a call and someone
from Calix who is on this list also got back to me. I finally have a quote from
them.

Anyway all is good now, hope I will have better experience/communication going
forward.

Thanks,

Tushar

I remember talking to a Mike Carpinelli at a WISPAmerica, I’d have to dig out
his card, but I think you’re right he lived in Naperville or something. But I
also remember various “team” members named Liz, Brian, Scott. I don’t remember
who did what. I think Liz, maybe last name Christie, was Great Lakes region
manager? But they should be easy enough to contact and find out who to deal

We also committed to purchasing 1500 Calix routers and got a deal we're
happy with. We spread the shipments out 150 at a time every couple months
and it worked well.

If you're having trouble with sales guys returning calls, reach out to this
contact and ask him to help. Be respectful but he should be able to light a
fire for you.

2020-01-28 Thread Cassidy B. Larson
Just like all other vendors, your price is based on the QTY you order. You
have more leverage to get better pricing if you order more QTY.

We ordered 1000 Calix units last year and got a GREAT deal. Then they allowed
us to spread out shipment delivery to 100 a month.

We do the same thing with our radio vendors too. It gives them months to know
what kind of stock they need to keep on hand to fulfill our orders.

My experience with Calix sales people is horrendous!!

They don’t return calls or email weeks at a time!!

Can’t even get a quote out of this guys!!

I hope that is not how their supports works too.

How can you do business with a company who can’t even give a quote and what I
have heard is everyone gets different price too!!

I remember talking to a Mike Carpinelli at a WISPAmerica, I’d have to dig out
his card, but I think you’re right he lived in Naperville or something. But I
also remember various “team” members named Liz, Brian, Scott. I don’t remember
who did what. I think Liz, maybe last name Christie, was Great Lakes region
manager? But they should be easy enough to contact and find out who to deal
with. First step: NDA.

Google wifi is bad because there's no way to manually set the 5ghz channel away
from our radio. We have one customer we told this and that their service will
stink until they switch to our router or get a different mesh system like orbi
where you can still set the channel manually.

We also do not support any speedtest except speedtest.net and selecting one
server we like. Also they have to be hardwired to the POE or we won't respond
to their tests. This eliminates much of the back and forth wifi speedtests.

Gotcha, thanks.

So you are buying your hardware direct from Calix? Do you have a contact
there?

[AFMUG] Calix (was RE: Google/Nest WiFi speedtest)

2020-01-24 Thread Ken Hohhof
Calix CPE is probably an easier decision for a FISP, or for a new WISP just
starting deployment, or for a big provider that deploys a pallet load of
routers every day.

For an established small WISP with maybe a couple thousand existing customers
and a modest number of new customers monthly, converting to Calix and meeting
their minimums for cloud features can be troublesome. It’s also easier for a
big carrier to just put a team of people from their CPE department on getting
it done. For a small WISP, it’s one more project for the head techie.

What does Calix get you for on the management? I've been looking into some
options for managed routers, and I like the 844E, but Calix is pretty proud of
their management platform and it just doesn't make a lot of sense for the
number of managed routers we would be deploying right now.

I'm wondering if anyone out there has any experience with Ubiquiti's Dream
Machine (unfortunate name, since Sony has been using it for a couple of
decades). At least Ubiquiti has a management platform that I don't need to
sacrifice my firstborn for.

Makes a huge difference.

Google wifi is bad because there's no way to manually set the 5ghz channel away
from our radio. We have one customer we told this and that their service will
stink until they switch to our router or get a different mesh system like orbi
where you can still set the channel manually.

We also do not support any speedtest except speedtest.net
<http://speedtest.net> and selecting one server we like. Also they have to be
hardwired to the POE or we won't respond to their tests. This eliminates much
of the back and forth wifi speedtests.

I really just want to tell folks "WiFi is not supported on our service,
use at your own risk"... but of course, I can't do that.
