And semi related so I don't need to figure out any of that other stuff,
does anyone have a DLX MST they would be willing to sell? something with
6+ ports and a 500' tail on it?

Kind of related. I'm trying to figure out some MST stuff and order parts
off of ebay because lead times are insane.

DLX - Small newer connector we would normally order from commscope

Hardened Full Size
Opti-Tip = Corning version Same form factor as Hardened full size.

Are the above two both APC? If so, what is SCAOPT?

Not sure why UPCs are used at all since APC seems to be technologically
superior.

   Slight cost differential. APC used to have a slightly higher insertion loss.
Preference to have same connectors everywhere.

Yup, and on the LAN you don't have to care about a db here or there
because you have 2km optics running 200 feet.

If you've already got hardened connectors in the field then maybe this
opinion is irrelevant, but look at Commscope OFDC drop closures in the
future.

They use standard connectors, so you can put an SOC on a tight buffered
drop fiber like Corning ROC-drop or similar.  And there never seems to
be a shortage of non-hardened connectors.

"angled polish connector"

polish is a rare word because the meaning changes when you capitalize it.

Green always equals angled. APC Angled polished connector. Makes the
reflected photons not make it back into the core. Like a directional couple
for RF.
APC=Angled Polished Connector or perhaps it is “Angle”. That sounds more
correct.
APC=Green

I have heard SC is Subscriber Connection So SC-APC To me SC= big
LC= Small There are also LC-APC Small green. Not sure who uses those.

LC = Longhaul Connector (just things people say, no idea if it is rooted in
fact.  Good mnemonic though).

UPC= Universal Polished Connector
UPC = Blue

The end of the connector is straight and flat. Like two cleaved fibers before
you hit the splice button. Like what you find in a mechanical connector. Not
sure why UPCs are used at all since APC seems to be technologically superior.

You can have 4 versions
LC-UPC
LC-APC
SC-UPC
SC-APC

Again, SC=big, LC=small
UPC=blue
APC=green

What I normally see is blue small (LC-UPC) on everything not related to
subscribers.

I'm not sure I would want any of your customers. They all seem dumber and
cheaper than mine.

BTW: I directed someone from near Serena towards you this morning. You're kinda
there. I know someone else that's kinda there (MediaNet WiFi). I'm not sure who
else would be there. NewarkNet seems too far away.

Re: [AFMUG] Can anybody make these ?

2020-12-03 Thread Carl Peterson
We standardized on SC/APC (SCA) for everything we can. Mostly because it
is the defacto standard for GPON so it is really easy to get. The only
caveat is for optics which are mostly UPC so we have SCA - SCU 4.8mm
outdoor drop cables built for us for running from our fiber plant to
rooftop radios where we use BiDi SCU SFPs

Josh, Got a source / link for that DLX field install kit? Just starting to
add DLX to the mix doing our own mini MSTs to group smaller buildings
together. Would be nice to have some in stock for flexability.

Re: [AFMUG] Can anybody make these ?

2020-12-03 Thread Colin Stanners
APC is better for return loss, but from what I see no commonly used fiber
systems care that much about return loss (only old analog-over-fiber
systems?)

I had standardized our company on SC/UPC since the connector worked
everywhere - patch panels (not too tight like the tiny LC), SFPs (we use
BiDi so only need one connector, can fit an SC), NIDs.

Unfortunately, many 10Gbit BiDi SFPs are only available easily in LC/UPC.
And some GPON ONU CPEs are SC/APC. We have adapters for those cases but
it's annoying to move away from the standard.

Ken, with many WISPs getting into fiber, are you looking to do that in your

They screwed us on our optitap premade as well. See if you can find a DLX
field install kit for ~$10. We got field install optitap for $10 and will
splice SC/APC on the other end (in which case you'd splice LC-UPC).

For the record drop cables with LC is pretty weird and UPC is really really
weird.

Don't expect Commscope to get any better on lead times or accurate ship dates.

Ken, with many WISPs getting into fiber, are you looking to do that in your
area, or does that not match the area / your corporate goals?

2020-12-03 Thread Colin Stanners
Why would you say that UPC is really really weird? We use it quite
exclusively as a fiber standard, except some GPON units are APC so we use
adapters there.

Re: [AFMUG] Can anybody make these ?

2020-12-03 Thread Ken Hohhof
The FS blog post seems to say PC was first and UPC was an improved version.
Sounds like PC-UPC-APC is good-better-best, at least for return loss.

Are you saying to use APC instead of UPC?

Don't know what PC is. LC is the teeny thing that goes in an SFP.

UPC is uniform blue

APC is angled green
