Someday I am going to build some of my ideas for this.

If you put a GPS antenna away from the tower and one on the tower, the long
baseline will let you know the bearing between the two with great accuracy.
They could talk and let the tower unit know what the azimuth of the line
between them is.

Then you could aim a scope with an angular encoder at the ground unit, or it
could have a strobe light with a omni lens camera on the tower to let it know
where it is. I even considered dopplar UHF antennas on the tower to get the
position of the ground unit.

Then it is a simple thing to know which direction you are aiming. Properly
done it could be a $300 item instead of a $3000-$5000 item. Just not sure
which method to use to get the relative direction of the ground unit...

A small rifle scope on an encoder would work really well.

Mimosa backhaul radios do something like this; they both have GPS, and if
they're talking at all, they figure out bearing to each other and give you
compass bearing.

Wow, you got the boss to spring for a $5,999 tool? Did you use Jedi mind

On their web page they have a photo of it being used on what looks like an
omni. How do you aim an omni? Or is that actually multiple sectors in a can

2020-04-08 Thread Steve Jones
Yep, that and the optic.
I thought about using it on an omni we are putting up just for super
accurate gps and roll and to take a wtf pic

GME does a fair price on it.

We decided to do our own bracket for dish alignments. We figure getting the
first side 99 percent dialed in then going to the other side, we may not
have to return to the first for fine alignment.

We demoed it, the site we went to every ap was a mess. The reports are
awesome.

I think it would be really awesome if cambium would team up with them for a
promo on one of these bad boys and cnheat.

This actually was a hard sell on me. I reviewed and asked around. Got
enough info, and the boss signed off. But til I had one in my hands I
couldn't pull the trigger. Had it been my money, I'd have grabbed it in a
heart beat, but spending that much boss coin has serious consequenses if
it's a bad choice.
But like I said, 10 second in and the deal was closed.
The reports alone are worth having one

If you can find one someone will let you borrow, you will see. The guy that
let me borrow his let me have it for two weeks. But that was at the
beginning of the end of the world, he picked it up last week. We actually
only used it at one site. Ease of use was important. I had the two techs
watch the videos, no other training. I got back a perfect data set. No more
wondering if that odd subscriber number is an off azimuth or roll.

this does the triangulation for height if there is an obstuction below your
mount point, you just need to shoot to a spot thats horizontal to thebase
ground level. We ordered a new one because it has bluetooth for the
reporting instead of the datacable. Ive had my own for a year or two, the
scope is amazing, i use it for LOS siting all the time.

I also bought this for myself because ive held my phone to my rangefinder
to get pictures, they look good but its a pita with only 2 hands

With CBRS accuracy requirements (POP side, not customer) its almost silly
not to use something like this to make sure your numbers are accurate. We
are doing th enetwork in CNHeat, so it really matters that we get the best
output data we can. same with tower coverage, LinkPlanner, Radiomobile, etc

Re: [AFMUG] Smart Antenna Alignment review?

2020-04-10 Thread Steve Jones
After the boss gave the funding OK the two things I really looked for after
reading and asking for reviews was speed of the result while hands free and
likelihood of sending it with a tech and it coming back in one piece.

The guy that lent me his brought it over, we set and ap up on our tower
leg to test. Easy to set up on the ground. Like any adjunct tool, it may be
a little more tricky hanging on a tower, but by design it's small steps,
attach mount, then attach tool, so not bulky steps.
It does take some seconds to get a solution, but that's expected if you're
looking for accuracy.
The app is really slick, you will want a magnet mount for your phone if you
use it. The display on the unit is analog LCD so you dont have to deal with
silly glare nonsense of a full display.
Output is super responsive, no turn and wait.

I made the guy let me fill out a damage replacement contract to let me
borrow it since I fully intended to hand it to a tower monkey and see if
they broke it.

When the techs went to the site to test it out (aligned one new AP and
verified my other 4 were way off on az/el) they fell in love with it. No
more digital levels and printed GE maps with lines and eyeballing things.

Tech already had his templates loaded in the app and sent me the reports
right from there.

Setup/tear down of the unit were problem free, and other than some grain
dust, it came back without a scratch.

You definitely need to find someone who will let you put your hands on one.
The one we borrowed was 3 years old and the battery was still problem free.
Enclosed battery was a concern for me, but I'm betting a quality battery is
part of that hefty pricetag.

As long as you are ok with a couple of those stickers covering screw heads
getting a bit messed up...

After the boss gave the funding OK the two things I really looked for after
reading and asking for reviews was speed of the result while hands free and
likelihood of sending it with a tech and it coming back in one piece.

The guy that lent me his brought it over, we set and ap up on our tower leg
to test. Easy to set up on the ground. Like any adjunct tool, it may be a
little more tricky hanging on a tower, but by design it's small steps, attach
mount, then attach tool, so not bulky steps.

I made the guy let me fill out a damage replacement contract to let me borrow
it since I fully intended to hand it to a tower monkey and see if they broke it.

When the techs went to the site to test it out (aligned one new AP and
verified my other 4 were way off on az/el) they fell in love with it. No more
digital levels and printed GE maps with lines and eyeballing things.

Time has come for us to get a little more accuracy on our sector antennas.

Any input on the following product?
