The rotating thing is always going to make a sine wave. But throttle
response and voltage regulators vary.

I have an old Cat 40kW diesel generator that if it's unloaded the
voltage regulator is noisy. I don't use it anymore but the simple
solution was to keep a 1kW resistive base load connected all times.

I have always gone for the Japanese inverter generators (Yamaha, Honda, etc.)
but recently saw an ad for one from Generac that sounded like good features for
the price, may be available at big box stores? Of course they are probably
slapping their name on something they OEM from China. Also the run time might
have been on the low side, i.e. fuel tank might be on the small side.

The other thing is most of these have warranties for residential use and also
are supposed to have the oil changed every 20 hours or something like that.
Honestly I’ve run my Honda a lot longer than that and the oil looked like new
when I drained it. Yamaha I think sells both residential and commercial
models, what do you want to bet it’s the same hardware just with a different
price and warranty?

Some of the non inverter generators may not produce clean enough voltage,
frequency, etc. to satisfy the UPS. I have had APC units go berserk switching
on and off batteries every few seconds because it thought the input power was
bad, that was with a rental generator meant for running tools at a jobsite.

Heh, I just got notified that I need to bring a generator to my tower in that
area. Can't find it, so I have to find one to buy that will run a UPS.

How much juice you running that you need that many generators?

Our most heavily loaded WISP site uses about 650 watts so the little Honda
EU2000 is more than enough.
