Re: [AFMUG] Underwater fiber

2017-04-27 Thread Trey Scarborough
This is a yes and no. It sounds easy, but the truth is you would have to
bury it under the bottom. I have done river crossings before and
Permitting is a nightmare, and then construction if usually difficult as
well. It normally would require boring underneath it many feet depending
on the size it could be 20'. I have seen this done in LA before and it
is impressive they custom built a boat that will cut a trench place the
cable in.

But obtaining permits and permission from the Lake Commission, and Utah Army

I am working on getting a link over a lake that is 12 miles wide. The lake is
only 8 feet deep (Utah Lake in Utah County Utah). I don't really have the
means to run Fiber at the bottom of this lake, but it made me curious how
someone would go about it? What kind of cable would be required, how would it
be permitted, is this a common practice, etc? I just wanted to get people's
thoughts on it.

Thank you,

I've got some PMP450 files that I've used in the past that should work
fine. Some of it is stuff I put together, some is stuff I found.
Available at: http://www.north-hill.net/files/cacti-450.zip

Adds everything into cacti, complete with a PMP450 host template that
includes everything in it.

Does Army Corp of Engineers have jurisdiction on any body of water or
just that one? I was recently talking to someone about HD Boring under
a river. He ended going through an existing conduit on a bridge
instead, but he seemed to think going under the river wouldn't be a big
  deal.

.that was obviously not 12 miles wide. More like 1200'.

Army corp of engineers has jurisdiction. You will probably have to bury it
4 feet deep. They use jet plows for these underwater jobs.

You need armored cable. Normal FO cable will float.

I am working on getting a link over a lake that is 12 miles wide. The lake
is only 8 feet deep (Utah Lake in Utah County Utah). I don't really have the
means to run Fiber at the bottom of this lake, but it made me curious how
someone would go about it? What kind of cable would be required, how would it
be permitted, is this a common practice, etc? I just wanted to get people's

All Navigable waters of the US.

Big deal about repealing a former administrations work that made this rule

Dropping armored fiber cable in a lake isn't hard.

But obtaining permits and permission from the Lake Commission, and Utah Army

Re: [AFMUG] New competition in town

2017-04-27 Thread Paul Stewart
LOL ….

A number of years back we had some contracted tower crews working in very harsh
conditions …. it was almost -40C, winds steady at about 25MPH and visibility at
less then 50ft …. 4 guys went up the tower at daylight and were up on the tower
until nightfall… three days in a row.

The first day they recommended that nobody go to the east of the tower where
there was a treeline and of course anyone on the ground to ensure they had
their hard hats on at all times etc… lots of tools, parts etc going up and down
the tower and accidents happen. I didn’t quite understand the reference to not
heading to the east of the tower (which was of course the direction of the
wind)…. after early afternoon came around, some of us were sitting around the
base of the tower when suddenly it “clicked”… “umm, the guys are not coming
down at all - what happens after they have had some drinks to stay hydrated and
… well…. they gotta go?” - answer was pretty simple … “don’t be to the east of
the tower”…. I laughed… the day went on, nightfall came around and the guys
returned to the bottom exhausted….

The second day, I noticed that a bucket of tools were being sent up in the
morning as expected along with other parts/tools etc … but then I noticed the
same thing as the day before… an empty bucket except for two things in it ….
toilet paper wrapped in plastic and the daily newspaper …. at that point I sure
as shit didn’t ask (yes pun intended) ….. ;)
