Re: [AFMUG] Cisco IOS

2015-06-16 Thread Ken Hohhof
Official way is to buy a SmartNet contract for the device, which is a bundle of
support, hardware replacement and software upgrades for the duration, usually 1
year. To my knowledge, Cisco will not sell you just the software contract.
Figure on the whole process taking a few days to over a week, depending on
where you buy the SmartNet entitlement. If you need it solely to fix a
security issue, sometimes you can get Cisco to send you the patched version.

I do not feel guilty about buying a SmartNet contract for one device and then
updating all my devices of that same or similar model. Not when I buy a brand
new router and a new module, and immediately have to buy a maintenance contract
to update the firmware for that module to even be recognized. Or when there is
a major bug and again I have to buy a maintenance contract to fix the bug.

If all else fails you can usually find the exact IOS filename and md5 on
the Cisco website and then grab that file off of Google.

I think some partners and maybe CCIE’s may have access to everything. It

The company you are consulting for should have a SMARTnet contract with
 Cisco.

If they don't then place a call to Cisco and they will sell you a contract
 via a reseller.

If the firmware has a security issue then Cisco will usually allow you to
download a patched IOS file version.

In my former life I had a very small and cheap Cisco device on SMARTnet.
As long as I had a log in I could download all the firmware I wanted for
 any Cisco device.

But for what product? The image is different for each platform, so the 2900
image will work on a 2911 or 2921, but does you no good for a 7400 or ASR.

Also there might be some caveats upgrading from 12 to 15, there was a major
change in how they handled IP Base vs IP Services vs etc., IOS 15 is a
universal image and the box determines what features it is licensed to access,
whereas previously they had different images.
