I tried some Linksys Velops over the weekend. Jury is out. Has some cosmetic
issues with the LED’s that is supposed to be fixed in upcoming firmware release
but worked pretty well.

I have UniFi deployed in places, but Amplifi in my home. It is sweet. My
only complaint is that it is too user friendly, and doesn't have the
in-depth menus that I am used to with, say Netgear. You have to use the
app, and there is no web browser. Some of the options, while trying to be
simplified for the average consumer, seem convoluted for a techie.

I probably will eventually, but this is simpler and works well and is probably
less expensive for what I am getting out of it.

I’m waiting for the 10Gbps router from UBNT to hook up at my office and test
out with their unifi system.

Re: [AFMUG] Amplifi?

2017-07-16 Thread Sterling Jacobson
It’s good. I’m using the three ‘box’ Amplifi package.

The one box, two wireless mesh units worked ok, but I had wired connections to
my remote areas, so I switched to using the three wired boxes.

Super simple to set up and configure with the app.

I have one of the boxes configured as main router, and when I plugged in the
two other boxes they went directly into wireless mesh mode and were online.
Then I went to the app and told it to use the 1Gbps Ethernet connection as
backbone instead and saved and they came up wired to the main unit.

Now I can do about 400Mbps wireless to my Note 5 phone in the same room as my
router.

And wireless in a nearby room is usually better than 100Mbps, without the mesh
delays.

They still do have disconnects and mesh roaming oddness like any other system
for this price.

I use it and recommend it for residential systems.

I don’t know if you can buy additional box units on a part basis, but if so,
this system would be great for even larger homes that needed more than three
wireless AP nodes.

Management interface is awesome.

I think they do have a bug or need a couple more features, in the client list.

And if it’s not currently connected, it isn’t manageable which is annoying.

The best thing I can say is that when they release a unifi product, there's
normally an edgemax version. Historically speaking.

We're talking about the eero.

As much as you mindlessly like to bash on things, I've been really
impressed with the speed of development on certain unnamed alpha software
projects from UBNT as of late. I'm hopeful they can get this level of
output in some of their other teams... They're on the right track.

Such as? I mean, all we care about it for is the ability to take it during
the install, drop in off around a medium to large sized home, and to
simply have it work with little to no configuration. And then, remote
management... Needs a controller that is, my little birds say, rumored
to be worked on.

Bald yes. Rotund? Not quite. Eunuch... no.

I am fond of Daenerys Targaryen, the First of Her Name, Queen of
Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lord
of the Seven Kingdoms, Protector of the Realm, Khaleesi of the Great
Grass Sea, called Daenerys Stormborn, the Unburnt, Mother of Dragons
though.

PS - Titles have really slimmed down over the years, haven't they? Now
we just have 3 or 4 letter ones most of the time!

Like your “connected car”.

I’ll bet the Bosch engineers who came up with the CAN bus are rolling over in
their graves at the thought of a poorly secured gizmo connecting to the CAN bus
and also the public Internet. Of course the Progressive Snapshot got hacked.
And now Verizon will sell you a “Hum”, to “turn your beater into a connected
car”.
