Yes,  that is indeed the problem when half your brain is on the ground behind
you.
But id like to see a boxing robot end up just as dangerous as one with a gun,
then even not even arming them they still present a problem to the young
developing scientist.

I ran into this interesting video of what another AI developer has made.
Everyone in this business needs to think about being on the receiving end
of THIS technology.

BTW, for $600 you can buy one.

Re: [agi] International AI Issues

2019-10-10 Thread Matt Mahoney
Backchannel uses TOR so it requires an internet connection. Steve had an
idea a few years ago for direct P2P intrrner between phones over WiFi,
which the protocol supports but is not widely used because of a bug (now
fixed) that caused the protocol to drastically slow down. The bug was a 32
bit clock overflow, but it took a long time to find and prompted the
development of Bluetooth as a replacement to do the same thing.

At the time we didn't see a big need for it, but now repressive
governments, having learned from the Arab Spring, routinely turn off the
internet to quell dissent. Kashmir has been without internet or phone
service for months to preemptively suppress opposition to India revoking
their autonomous status. Syria and many African countries do this.
https://amp.businessinsider.com/countries-internet-shutdown-statistics-2019-6

The big technical problems are the short range of WiFi and battery drain.

There is a product that does similar to this that came out a few years ago...
trying to remember... I think it was a communications app that worked when not
connected to the internet. Some sort of pause and relay later methodology.

Re: [agi] International AI Issues

2019-10-09 Thread Steve Richfield
John,

I petitioned EyeBuyDirect to produce glasses that would mislead facial
recognition devices. I even volunteered to do the optical engineering
needed to assure success. They responded that they sell to the market, and
so far, I was the ONLY one requesting such glasses. I suspect that with
enough money to purchase a carload of such glasses and sell them into
China, someone could throw a BIG monkey wrench into facial recognition.
Their "cover story" would be that they hide ugly eyes, and provide for
cat-eyes and other artistic eyes.

Of course facial recognition isn't the only such issue. It appears to be
possible to build a device that emulates a cell tower, but only to certain
cell phones, which would provide for SECURE communications. Also, such a
device could connect to cell towers to relay calls, thereby obscuring the
locations of the phones.

There are relatively simply ways to subvert these early AI systems.
Countermeasures should be deployed quickly, before enough money is
concentrated to literally throw billions of dollars at overcoming
countermeasures.

Do you happen to know anyone with a million dollars or so, who might like
to invest it into developing such products? This really wouldn't take a
fortune to get going. This could easily start out as a garage-sized
business.

Thoughts?

Steve

Full employment can be had with the stoke of a pen. Simply institute a six
hour workday. That will easily create enough new jobs to bring back full
employment.

Re: [agi] International AI Issues

2019-10-09 Thread Steve Richfield
John,

More than interesting - more like prophetic, maybe the beginnings of an
antitechnology movement that I have been expecting.

I suspect the Unibomber was right, but a bit premature. Civilization has
come to an inflection point, where the detriments of new technology are
starting to exceed its benefits.

More and more new technology will be seen as bad, e.g. they even took the
dating sites off of Craigslist.

Probably the single worst influence is some of the people right here on
this forum, who think that any damage that AI does must be good, so they
promote it despite the dangers to society and even to themselves.

This will get MUCH worse.

Steve
