[Ai] Art in Braille: How This 27-Year Old Is Making Beauty Accessible to Those With Disabilities

2017-10-04 Thread Prashant Naik via Ai
Read story :
https://www.thebetterindia.com/116961/art-in-braille-this-27-year-old-is-making-beauty-accessible-disabilities/

At DAG Modern in Mumbai’s Kala Godha, if you’re lucky enough, occasionally
you can hear discussions on art that are unique.

Often, the voices you hear are not of students of art or its connoisseurs,
but of children from a blind school who regularly visit the gallery under a
programme called ‘Abhas’, a tactile art walk.

Since the museum has tactile reproductions of the paintings, these children
get to experience art not through the conventional sense of sight, but
through touch.

As a Heritage Architect and Access Consultant, this is what 27-year-old
Siddhant Shah does. Since 2015, he has been working with museums like DAG
Modern to help create a world where anyone can have access to our museums,
art galleries and heritage, irrespective of the kind of disability.

So, what made Siddhant take up the cause?

Siddhant Shah’s organisation ‘Access for All’, is bridging the gap between
art and culture and people who want to access it.

As an Architecture student, Siddhant and his team participated in a
competition hosted by Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to make
Indian heritage sites disable-friendly.

He credits this competition as his first introduction to “how architecture,
heritage and disability needs come together.”

More than his team winning the competition, which it did, he realised how
to adapt theories of tactile models into real-life scenarios.

Eventually, when he was studying MA Heritage Management in University of
Kent’s Athens Campus, Greece as a Starvos Niarchos Scholar, he was struck
by the inclusive, disabled-friendly cultural institutions.

In India, let alone the facilities, even the conversation around disability
issues can be challenging.

Since his mother is partially-sighted as well, he considered her needs as
the benchmark for all the designs he did while working as a consultant for
various museums, after his return from Greece. However, not many museums
were keen on giving him a chance to explore this avenue.

“As I was approaching different organisations and museum and writing to
them, none were interested. They said they were not looking into this
because they didn’t have any visually impaired people coming to the museum.
But, the reason they don’t come in because they don’t have the facility!
Luckily, the City Palace Jaipur said Yes!”

All these experiences with cultural institutions of India prompted him to
set up his own organisation that would try to bring the accessibility
issues in the mainstream.

Through his 2-year-old organisation ‘Access for All’ he has already worked
with National Museum in Delhi (where he was instrumental in setting up
Anubhav Tactile Gallery), City Palace and Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur,
Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa among many others to produce tactile
reproductions, braille books and organise Abhas tactile walks.
Additionally, he also designed the first museum braille book in Pakistan,
for State Bank Museum in Karachi!

These accessibility initiatives can be life-changing for many, who are kept
outside the enriching world of art and culture, thanks to their disability.

In fact, once when the children in the Abhas tactile walks were asked by
Siddhant what do they remember from their previous visit, they could
comfortably talk about Jeram Patel, whose iconic profiles they ‘touched’ in
their previous visit, and thoroughly remembered all thanks to the braille
brochures he designed.

“When we visit museums, we can take home brochures. But for these
[visually-impaired] children, there is nothing which they can take back.
That’s why we started making these braille brochures so that they can take
with them.”

Braille Books designed by Siddhant for Jaipur’s City Palace Musuem.

For Siddhant the experience of coming face to face with the impact he has
created can be often surreal.

In one instance, he remembers a boy who was able to successfully identify
an SH Raza painting after encountering it for the first time at an
industrialist’s house in Mumbai, where his father works as a driver:

“It was a beautiful painting with bright colours and geometric shapes.
Hence, it had a lasting impression on his mind. Imagine, if these kids
could be given basic access and information early on, they can observe and
learn so much! It was one of the most touching moments of my life.”

Siddhant’s idea of accessibility is not a narrow one. He wants to include
people who might otherwise be deemed as conventionally ‘normal’, but may
lack the financial and social resources to access art and culture.

“In a museum, an architect’s job is not only about providing ramps, wheels
and toilets as many seem to believe. One should also make sure that even
the knowledge stored in these walls need to be communicated. That is why I
introduced the idea of ‘intellectual accessibility

I have shared in distribution lists at my work too. So more people would
sign. This would be a good idea for people working at different companies
to share among their internal distribution lists. By doing so, we are
automatically raising more awareness in community.

An audio related file is misssing, which required with the jaws
installation. Try to install lower version of jaws, means jaws 17. once the
problem is resolved, uninstall the jaws and install jaws 18. I think, the
problem will be resolved. If you don't get positive result, no need to

Dear All,
JAWS 18 is causing major headaches for me on my Windows 10 machine. It
becomes slow and unstable on webpages after every five or ten minutes
of use. I wrote to VFO technical support who recommended a clean
reinstallation after deleting all traces of the programme on the
computer including registry entries and Microsoft Visual C++
executables 2005, 2010, 2013 and 2015. They also asked me to
temporarily disable my antivirus and log in as administrator before
reinstalling JAWS. I followed their instructions but am now facing a
much bigger problem. JAWS refuses to start and I get the following
message:
---
JAWS
---
A file required by the driver VCSPEECH.JLS for Remote Access Speech
could not be loaded.

One or more shared components are missing.
Please reinstall this product in an effort to resolve the problem.
---
OK

I have made several reinstallation attempts and even tried the repair
option. Nothing seems to be working.
This is causing me a lot of distress. Can someone please advise?
Thanks,
Moiz.

Hi
Do you have by any chance an earlier version say J17 or so. If you do, can you
run and let us know its result?

Alternatively, you can do a system restore of a date prior to the problem. This
should fix it.

Gene therapy may help reverse blindness

Researchers have shown that gene therapy might help reverse blindness

Researchers have shown that gene therapy might help reverse blindness
by reprogramming cells at the back of the eye to become light
sensitive. Retinitis pigmentosa — the most common cause of blindness
in young people — occurs mostly due to loss of millions of light
sensitive photoreceptor cells that line the retina. The remaining
retinal nerve cells, which are not light sensitive, however, remain in
the eye which can be treated using gene therapy, the researchers said.
“There are many blind patients in our clinics and the ability to give
them some sight back with a relatively simple genetic procedure is
very exciting,” said lead author Samantha de Silva, specialist
registrar, Ophthalmology and Clinical research training fellow at the
University of Oxford.

“Our next step will be to start a clinical trial to assess this in
patients.” In the study, detailed in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences, the team used a viral vector to express a light
sensitive protein, melanopsin, in the residual retinal cells in mice
which were blind from retinitis pigmentosa. Post treatment, the mice
were monitored for over a year and they maintained vision during this
time as they were able to recognise objects in their environment which
indicated a high level of visual perception. The cells expressing
melanopsin were able to respond to light and send visual signals to
the brain, the researchers said. Read here Fish eyes may help find

2017-10-04 Thread P L VERMA via Ai

Hi Payal,,
This may seem a little simple but when fire fox updated automatically to
version 55, I too, experienced problems in downloading stuff.
I removed the offending version and installed version 38. The problem

Dear All,
JAWS 18 is causing major headaches for me on my Windows 10 machine. It
becomes slow and unstable on webpages after every five or ten minutes
JAWS refuses to start and I get the following
message:

A file required by the driver VCSPEECH.JLS for Remote Access Speech
could not be loaded.

One or more shared components are missing.
Please reinstall this product in an effort to resolve the problem.

I have made several reinstallation attempts and even tried the repair
option. Nothing seems to be working.
This is causing me a lot of distress. Can someone please advise?

[Ai] Congratulations! 2000 signatures on accessible Indian Currency petition! and a worrying development

2017-10-04 Thread Blind Graduates' Forum of India (BGFI) via Ai
Hi all,

Congratulations! We have crossed 2000 signatures through our
Accessible Indian Currency petition in less than 100 hours! This level
of support definitely has contribution of many of you and much needed
from each one of us. It is indeed an important milestone of achieving
10% of our targeted 20,000 signatures. In fact you can track the
number of signatures real time by clicking the below link. Worth
saving it in your favorites / bookmark to keep following the score! If
you haven’t still signed, why not right now by clicking the below
link. All you need to do is read the page, enter your name, email id,
and submit. You will receive an email from change.org and click on the
link provided in the mail. Do remember to make it public while sharing
on Facebook (in case you use Facebook).
http://tinyurl.com/AccessibleCurrencyPetition

There is a worrying development. A recent Economic Times article says
that RBI is going to come up with new 100-rupee notes shortly. If they
go as per their original plan, the size difference between 50 and 100
and 200 will be just 2mm each. Factor 0.5mm error margin that they
have defined and additional 1mm due to shrinkage of note as people
keep folding the notes. Therefore, the size of these notes are going
to be so similar that it will be practically impossible for a blind
person to identify independently.
It becomes more important for us to intensify our campaign now and
spend lot more effort. It is time to involve your family members,
colleagues, online groups, social work groups, etc. We will be sharing
ready-made mails targeting different segments that you can keep
forwarding to your network. Just forwarding is not effective. Reach
out to your close ones in person and ask them to sign the petition,
share on Facebook and further spread the word.

In addition, we have just sent a comprehensive representation to RBI
and Finance Ministry highlighting all our issues with accessing notes,
coins, websites, mobile apps and ATMs. In addition, proposed specific
solutions based upon the comprehensive national and international
study that was done, including inputs from a few of you. The
representation will have lot more value if the same is endorsed by
many NGOs working for blind. That is when it will be seen as a problem
faced by not just one group, but the whole country. So if you are an
NGO and willing to take a lead, please share your email id and name of
the organization on this mail or drop a mail to contact.b...@gmail.com
We will share the representation with you within 3 days. All you would
need to do is sign and send. Of course, feel free to improvise. Also
do spread the word among persons with visual impairment connected with
your NGO.

Remember, it is our campaign and each one of us will have to lead it
to hope for a solution.

Thanks and regards,
Vishal

Thanks and regards,
Vishal

its just the workaround.
1st make internet explorer as your default browser.
to do this on windows 10, do the following.
1. press windows key, you will see a search feeld.
2. type default app settings and press enter.
3. press tab untill jaws says "web brouser, firefox button.
4. press enter.
5. from the choose an app list, select internet explorer by pressing tab key.
6. once jaws says internet explorer, press enter.
7. now, your default browser will be internet explorer.

open any mail from outlook and try opening the hyperlink.

if you able to view the external links then you can skip the below steps.

to restore the internet explore settings, do the following.
1. open the tools from the internet explorer.
2. go to options.
3. press ctrl tab untill the jaws says "advance page."
4. press tab untill jaws says reset... button.
5. press enter.
6. if you saved any personal information, then, do not check the check
box which says delete personal information.
7. tab to reset button and press enter.
8. restart the brouser and try opening the hyperlinks from the outlook.

[Ai] Paper of Interest: "People with visual impairment ‘watching’ television? Leisure pursuits of people with visual impairment in Ghana  "

2017-10-04 Thread avinash shahi via Ai
Abstract
Leisure pursuits of people with visual impairment is one of the
under-researched concepts in disability discourse. Employing focus
group discussions, this study explored the leisure pursuits of people
with visual impairment. Their leisure pursuits include chatting,
sleeping, listening to radio, meditation and watching television. The
watching of television is traditionally considered unconventional for
people with visual impairment; however, this was pursued for multiple
reasons including as a form of resistance to traditional stereotypes
on visual impairment as well as its educational and informative
values. Reasons underlying their leisure pursuits include availability
and accessibility, desire to obtain information and relaxation.

Pl desist from sharing 3rd party contact details. Just yesterday, I got a
request from one of our member to drop his post from the list as it carried his
contact details which was pointed by his office folks.

Once a mail is posted on the list, there is no way it can be retracted later on.

Therefore, please be mindful on what is posted. Contact details may be shared
directly and not on the list.

[Ai] United Kingdom: Rebecca Ratcliffe reports: 'I don’t think employers see what disabled people can do'

2017-10-04 Thread avinash shahi via Ai
In the UK, only 46.5% of working-age disabled people are employed –
with the figure for adults with learning difficulties just 6%. In the
first of a two-part
series, jobseekers with disabilities describe the hassles and
heartache of finding work
For the past three years, Neal Patel has worked part-time in
supermarkets. He loves his job, which involves talking to members of
the public and dealing
with stock. “All the people and staff are nice to me. I like helping
customers,” he says.
https://www.theguardian.com/inequality/2017/oct/03/i-dont-think-employers-see-what-disabled-people-can-do
But although Patel, who has learning difficulties, is in his second
supermarket job, he has never been paid for his work. His current role
at Waitrose,
where he works two shifts a week, has been a voluntary position for
the past year.

His disability, he says, doesn’t affect his ability to do the job. “I
normally do things by myself ... I don’t think about [my disability] –
I don’t really
know the difference. Sometimes I need help with big words when I’m
reading or writing, or help understanding something, but not often.”
Patel, who graduated from college this summer, knows how hard it is to
find paid work if you are disabled – and the statistics confirm this:
in January
2016, the UK employment rate among working-age disabled people
was 46.5%,
compared to 84% for non-disabled people.

For adults with learning difficulties, the numbers are even worse:
just 6% of people with a learning disability known to social services
are in paid employment,
despite more than 60% wanting to and being able to be in work,
according to the charity Mencap.

Patel, however –who is supported by the charity
Action for Kids
 – has just had some good news. During the writing of this article,
Waitrose decided to offer him a job with a salary.

“My family were pleased and proud when I found out,” he says. “I’ll be
working in the household cleaning section. I will go to the stockroom
in the morning
and then go to the shelves and fill them. It feels better to be paid.
I will work hard. I always work hard.”

Odds stacked against you

Despite the UK government’s pledge to get
one million disabled people into work
 by 2027,
analysis by the charity Scope
shows more disabled people are currently leaving employment than
moving into jobs. If you’re disabled and trying to succeed at work,
the odds are stacked
against you in a host of ways, from a lack of careers support to
inaccessible transport and ignorance among employers.

And when a disabled person does get a job, they’re
likely to be paid less
than non-disabled people. Research by the Equality and Human Rights
Commission found that, during the period 1997-2014, the disability pay
gap was 13%
for men and 7% for women.
Even the first task in a job application can exclude disabled
candidates. Amelia Forde, who is severely visually impaired, just
graduated from the University
of Derby, and hopes to work in sales in the drinks industry. But a
major barrier, she says, is getting past companies’ computerised
recruitment tests,
which often involve time-sensitive tasks.

“Normally there are 20 questions in 20 minutes, which is quite
difficult for me. You have to write to their HR department and say,
‘Would it be possible
to do something about this?’ I always worry that makes you look weak,
and that’s not something a company wants.”

Forde, 27, is now working part-time in a supermarket while she
searches for a graduate job. From her past experience in shops and
bars, she knows employers
lack an understanding of disability. Companies can abruptly change
their IT systems, making them inaccessible, and colleagues can make
offensive comments
without repercussions.
According to Forde, there’s very little quality training to help
managers understand the challenges disabled people face. “If I tell
somebody I have a
sight problem, they say, ‘Oh, but you have a job and you can get
yourself to and from work.’ But I can only read my phone if it’s three
to four inches
from my face, and if I want to pick a particular item from a shelf I
have to pick every item up first. I may have a job, but it’s taken me
a very long
time to feel comfortable there.”

Given how little disability awareness there is among employers, it’s
perhaps not surprising that companies can be reluctant to make even
the smallest of
adaptations. In Forde’s case, she would need an office computer with
accessible software – for example, a zoom magnifier and text-to-speech
programme.
But she worries that employers will consider this too time-consuming
to sort out.
In a damning report last month, the United Nations found the UK is
failing to uphold disabled people’s rights
across a range of areas, including education and work.

The government’s
Disability Confident
scheme – which offers training to employers on how to attract and
retain disabled people – promises to help businesses think more
positively about disability.
But campaigners say it’s unclear how t

Re: [Ai] Epub Files

2017-10-04 Thread Geetha Shamanna via Ai
Hi,

I recently came across a program called Codex, which I use for converting
Kindle books into more accessible formats. This program can also convert
ePub books. It was developed by a blind programmer and is fully accessible.
Here is what the Website says:

eBooks are a great resource for everyone. Unfortunately, if you're blind or
visually impaired (or even if you're not), accessing them using the software
or devices of your choice can be a challenge. That is the challenge Codex
aims to overcome.

With Codex, you can take the books you've legally purchased from sites like
Amazon, Smashwords, popular eBook stores using Adobe Digital Editions or
Barnes & Noble via NookStudy and convert them to a format of your choice, be
it ePub for reading on the latest devices, plain text to read in good old
Notepad or any of the other supported output formats. This involves
automatic removal of software protection imposed on such files, and a
separate conversion process. However, the two steps can be performed with
one convenient menu command, right from Windows Explorer. Alternatively, if
no conversion is required, you can choose to remove the protection and leave
the original format intact.

Even if your files aren't DRM-protected and can already be read, Codex
serves as an easy, efficient, accessible general purpose eBook converter and
organiser, so why not give it a go!

Download the program from here:

Friends,
Now a blind person can read almost all indian languages using a scanner. Real
improvement should be in that direction and not the other way. tesseract engine
with the support of lios can gives access to any library to the visually

Re: [Ai] request Accessibility of Ola app.

2017-10-04 Thread gatak singh via Ai
I'm also a regular user of ola and uber apps on android. I'm not
facing any problems in both. ola is quite inaccessible, but it can be
managed. in accessibility, uber is best but compared to the fare, ola
is the best these days. sometimes the difference is upto 50 rs. I use
tabzo to compare the fare of both the cabs. tabzo is a nice app,
moreover it's accessible.
