[Ai] Times of India Front Page today: 90% blind IAS officer gives 100% to his job

2017-12-27 Thread avinash shahi
HIGHLIGHTS
list of 2 items
• Aman Gupta, a 2013 batch IAS officer of the AGMUT (Arunachal
Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territories) cadre, works with the
assistance of a stand-mounted
American video magnifier that helps the visually impaired read.
• Gupta has juvenile macular degeneration, a medical condition that
has no known cure. His vision is now so poor that he finds it
difficult to distinguish
people by their features.
Alok K N Mishra reports
The person who finalised recruitment rules pending for about 30 years
in a civic body, made it possible for hundreds of employees to be
promoted and leads
work on improving the ranking of South Delhi Municipal Corporation in
Swachh Survekshan 2018 is an IIM graduate. He is also 90% blind..
Aman Gupta,
a 2013 batch IAS officer of the AGMUT (
Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territories)
cadre, works with the assistance of a stand-mounted American video
magnifier that helps the visually impaired read.
Recommended By Colombia..Gupta has juvenile macular degeneration, a
medical condition that has no known cure. His vision is now so poor
that he finds it
difficult to distinguish people by their features. The broad smile on
his face hides the pain he has felt since his vision began to
degenerate. Gupta used
to ride a bike when he was in Class 12. First, his eyes stopped seeing
the cursor on the computer; then he couldn't see a cricket ball arcing
through the
air; and soon after he found it difficult to read the text on the
classroom blackboard. In 2002, he learnt at
AIIMS
that he had developed juvenile macular degeneration which, over the
years, has left him with just about 10% of normal sight...In Delhi,
where two bureaucrats
committed suicide this year over stress and illness and students have
killed themselves on getting low marks, Gupta challenging life, rather
than the other
way round, is exemplary. "I failed to clear UPSC in 2012 for which I
prepared with audio books. I devoted more time and got a 57th
all-India rank in the
general category," Gupta, a BTech, said. He currently holds three
important positions — director (personnel), additional director
(education) and secretary
to the
SDMC
commissioner. Earlier, he was deputy commissioner (west zone), and
before that he was with the Delhi government as the SDM for
Chanakyapuri.
..A few officials have found it doesn't pay to be too clever where
Gupta is concerned. When he headed the west zone as deputy
commissioner, some would
sometimes stealthily leave the meeting hall while he thought they were
seated. When told, he immediately issued showcause notices to the
erring officials.
When Gupta was new to the SDMC, an officer felt offended when he did
not respond to his offer of a handshake. "I could not see that he
wanted a handshake.
I later told him that I was 90% blind," Gupta said...Reading with the
assistance of a video magnifier takes around 200% more time. But it
isn't often you'll
find his desk groaning under unfinished files. Visuals of Gupta, his
face often buried in his video magnifier, and sometimes of his hands
feeling around
the desk in search of a bell to press for a glass of water, or seeking
a pen or a mobile phone, testify to his immense willpower and
patience. He is one
of the top officials in SDMC's education department, responsible for
managing 600 schools and 2.5 lakh students. SDMC commissioner
Puneet Kumar Goel
 said Gupta was very meticulous..

[Ai] My Op-ed in The Hindu: For those, who missed it last year.

2017-12-27 Thread avinash shahi
Its been exactly an Year since I wrote an Op-Ed for The Hindu
highlighting discriminatory practices faced by disabled people from
the hands of financial institutions. The situation in majority of
villages and smaller cities remains the same despite RBI issuing
advisory to the Banks to follow the rules and ensure inclusion of
disabled people. After the demonetization and then issuance of new
notes, The problem of inaccessible currency is making tough for the
blind people in particular to identify the notes. There have been
petitions filed against the government for not making currency
accessible. Not only this, there are many instances where
post-employment many disabled employees are not provided with
screen-reading softwares and computers to perform the tasks
efficiently. The fight will go on and we'll not give in! read it and
share it widely cause problems are not gonna resolve so soon lets
continue putting constant pressure. in the times of constitutional
governance, the state is accountable and it can not continue to
discriminate with impunity.

Boosting self-confidence of visually challenged.
Devnar School for the Blind in Begumpet in Hyderabad has been a beacon
of hope for the visually challenged for almost two and a half decades.
Started by ophthalmologist Saibaba Goud, the school has been offering
free education for the visually challenged, giving them the
much-needed confidence to become productive and face the outside
world. The school, which offers classes from lower kindergarten to
12th standard in English medium, is unique as admissions are open
throughout the year.
Goud recalled his journey of starting the school nearly 25 years ago.
As an eye doctor he would tell parents that blindness is incurable and
sight cannot be restored. This would leave parents devastated. A dark
future would stare at parents of the child. This went on for a few
years. Then he realised that he needed to do something to provide
security for visually challenged children. Source:

Re: [Ai] Radio Udaan’s Frivolous attempt to tarnish some of the blind examinees may have huge ramification

2017-12-27 Thread Dinesh Kaushal
I agree with Ajay,

If we want social acceptance, we should ensure that no one can take advantage
in the name of blindness. People in the general population also take advantage
of the system, but each one of us are so visible that one mistake can cause
problems for hundreds of us.

When a blind person has cleared exams with wrong means, his or her colleagues
would soon understand it and would label all the blind persons in a bad light.

I think the problem is widespread in our population be it blind or not, but
blindness makes it more visible the way good deeds done by a blind person make
it more prominent than deeds done by people in the general population.

If we provide fool proof solution, then we would benefit because sooner or
later, exam authorities would do something about it and then we may not like
the solution.

We should applaud Radio Udaan and Ms. Shalini for highlighting the issue rather
than labeling it as a Frivolous attempt.

Subject: Re: [Ai] Radio Udaan’s Frivolous attempt to tarnish some of the blind

Hi,

I don't need any friend's support as I think I am capable enough to fight my
battles. When it comes to the examinations, I happily accept that I couldn't
make it to the next rounds of couple of selection processes as I wasn't
prepared enough. So the Capable system has already given its judgement in my
case.

The cut-offs are getting manipulated largely because few candidates go ahead
with unfair means. If 8 out of 10 candidates solve the papers on their own,
we'll have much more capable persons joining the services.

Though I am not in any way related with the radio station yet I feel that the
only objective to include this statement in the interview was to bring focus
towards the plight of deserving candidates who are disadvantaged because of
lack of proper controls.

Cheers,
Ajay
