In a recent discussion on the user forums there was a wide consensus that the graphing module badly lets down the suite. Ther eare big problems with graphical editing too because too many "modes" of selection with different functions are available. After all, by the 21st Century there is no shortage of past products to act as "prototypes" for an improved experience. I do not know that I would have used such colourful language. It is never good to alienate ones friends. But I do think that there is an issue of culture here, and perhaps it is a model for the general decline of Sun in the hardware and customer base as well. If I were in corporate control I think that I would want to re-establish the focus on users rather than developers. But the malaise is also in the marketing and specification. Between 1.0 and 2.0 we have seen the rise of the "me too" style of marketing, trying ever harder to emulate a competing product. There is no attempt to go beyond what the market already has and create a new impetus to switch because of innovation. So, SUn, here is a metaphor for your whole operation. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=53533 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Sep 4 21:04:11 -0700 2005 --- We managed to replicate the issue on a PC using Windows XP Pro SP2, OpenOffice Build 1.9.125 language English, and MAC OS 10.3, OpenOffice build 1.1.2 and Neo Office /j 1.1 We managed to replicate your issue. Test Instructions 1) Open a new OpenOffice spreadsheet (Calc) 2) Input “Test” into A1 3) Input values 1-14 into A2:A15 4) Select A1:A15 5) From top menu select Data->Filter->AutoFilter 6) Click on the arrow on the right side of A1 and selected top 10 7) Rows 2-5 become hidden (this is expected behavior), the arrow on the right side of A1 changes color to blue (implying the filter is active) 8) Click on the arrow on the right side of A1 9) The arrow changes to the color black 10) Press ESC 11) The filter is still active 12) The arrow stays black (which to our understanding means that the filter is not active), when it should have changed back to blue (or never changed to black in step 8) Additional testing: 13) Save the document (with the arrow as black but with filter active) 14) Close Calc 15) Open saved file 16) Now the arrow is colored blue (distinguishing the filter as active) Our additional testing showed a workaround for the problem. Save and load the spreadsheet and the actively filtered columns will be correctly colored. This issue may create some confusion to the user, on whether or not the filter is active but for all intensive purposes this issue is not critical, but should be fixed to clarify the user interface. Here are two issues for you to consider: 1. DO NOT. EVER. Destroy the data in cells. Change the DISPLAY to say "#REF!", but leave the content as "=Fubar * Bizbaz". I have sheets where HUNDREDS of cells are tied to names! A corporate environment may find accounting quite pissed if this ever has an affect on them. . . 2. Fixing (2) will suppress (1) unless someone deletes a name, of course; in such an event (1) becomes critical again. (1) is probably an easier fix than (2) and will deaden the severity of (2) and (3) as well as cover problems that can't be helped (deleting a name) and SHOULD BE DONE ASAP. I would have submitted 3 separate issues, but this stuff makes sense grouped. I'll submit a separate issue for (1), (2), and (3) and note that this bug explains in better detail why they're needed. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=53253 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Sep 4 20:08:01 -0700 2005 --- We managed to replicate the issue on a PC using Windows XP Pro SP2, OpenOffice Build 1.9.125 language English, and MAC OS 10.3, OpenOffice build 1.1.2 and Neo Office /j 1.1 Thank you for the clear set of steps used to reproduce the issue. There is a slightly simpler way of replicating the issue: 1) Select an empty cell 2) Input “Foo bar” 3) Select “ bar” and change any font property (bold, underline, italicize, change size) 4) Save 5) Open the saved file and the cell now contains “Foobar” Expected Result: Cell contains “Foo bar” Actual Results: Cell contains “Foobar” In a follow up test we tried: 1) Selecting an empty cell 2) Inputting “Foo bar test” 3) Select “ bar “ and change the font property (ex. Bold) 4) Select “ test” and change the font property (ex. Underline) 5) Save 6) Open the saved file and the cell now contains “Foobar Test”, the space between Foobar and Test is bolded and underlines. We also tried changing “ bar “font property(replaced step 3-4). The space before bar disappeared, but the space after is stayed. The most natural course for me is: LastName FirstName Initials Title Profession Street City State Zip Country Phone Fax Cell Email Homepage Look at some job or credit card applications, or forms online. E-bay for example: FirstName LastName Street City State Zip Country Phone Phone2 DateOfBirth Email Yes they have the name reversed from what I put. In microcomputer applications II, we did a lot of data entry into MS Access; last name always came first, due to sort order. It makes more sense for what you're sorting by to be first, typically last name. At any rate, I'm not a UI design expert, so find out for yourself. Look at other programs, like MS Office or AbiWord. At any rate, a lot of things like applications, registration forms, and the like order this kind of information in a standard way. It's not always on the same lines; but top to bottom, left to right, following the tab stops, it comes out to be the same ordered list (plus or minus a few elements, but typically no order changes are made). Sometimes it's good to get in file like everyone else. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. The argument doesn't have to be a direct value I think I did get your point and thought I had explained that in the statement below to be interpreted as (The argument DOES have to be a direct value) "Though it would be easier to just restrict that argument to only the values 0,1,True,False and anything else would result in a formula error and if it was not that would be in error." I can understand that you might want to or have to generalize from this specific case because the next complaint would be that a formula result could not be used. I can also understand that there may be no existing code in the current formula handling to force an argument to be only a direct value. Since it seems all of the above is not a realistic option, would you be willing to agree a reasonable option would be to make the setting applicable to each sheet in a workbook, rather than to the entire workbook? This would allow an import from Excel using wildcards and then adding a new sheet to the workbook that uses regular expressions within the same workbook. The user could reference cells on those sheets within the same workbook that are results of regular expressions. Thankyou for being patient in explaining your objections and the reasons for those objections in detail. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Test case 1: 1) Open a new or save calc spreadsheet 2) On the top menu select Tools->AutoCorrect 3) Click on Exceptions tab (if it’s already active then click on the “Abbreviations…” text field) 4) Click Help Button (bottom right) 5) Close the help using the ‘x’ on the top right of the help window 6) Close the AutoCorrect window using the ‘Ok’ button 7) Calc crashes Test case 2: 1) Open Calc 2) Close Calc (don’t close QuickStarter) 3) Open a new or save calc spreadsheet 4) On the top menu select Tools->AutoCorrect 5) Click on Exceptions tab (if it’s already active then click on the “Abbreviations…” text field) 6) Click Help Button (bottom right) 7) Close the help using the ‘x’ on the top right of the help window 8) Close the AutoCorrect window using the ‘Ok’ button 9) Calc crashes Test case 3: 1) Open Writer 2) Close Writer (don’t close QuickStarter) 3) Open a new or save calc spreadsheet 4) On the top menu select Tools->AutoCorrect 5) Click on Exceptions tab (if it’s already active then click on the “Abbreviations…” text field) 6) Click Help Button (bottom right) 7) Close the help using the ‘x’ on the top right of the help window 8) Close the AutoCorrect window using the ‘Ok’ button 9) Calc doesn’t crash Test case 4: 1) Open Writer 2) Close Writer 3) Close QuickStarter 4) Open a new or save calc spreadsheet 5) On the top menu select Tools->AutoCorrect 6) Click on Exceptions tab (if it’s already active then click on the “Abbreviations…” text field) 7) Click Help Button (bottom right) 8) Close the help using the ‘x’ on the top right of the help window 9) Close the AutoCorrect window using the ‘Ok’ button 10) Calc crashes The crash occurred on every platform every time we tried it. We tried 3 times on each platform. In step “Click on Exceptions tab” we started off with clicking each tab one from left to right. Follow up tests showed the clicking Exceptions Tab is enough. After Calc crashed and we chose not recover the documents a Writer windows popped up. After we failed to replicate the bug (without closing writer and Quickstarter) that lead us to believe that opening Writer could prevent the crash. Hence after the next set of tests we managed to come up with test cases 3 and 4. Due to the nature of the crash we think that this bug is critical since this issue has the ability to crash the entire OpenOffice application. The bug also re-occurs on multiple platforms which may lead to other significant problems. In any case we feel that any bug that can stop the program from functioning might be an issue of higher priority. Funny thing is, the person who initially reported the problem has problems with m125 too. She has the same as before she upgraded to m125, but not the same problem as me. Her problem is that normal text (not bold italics) is too heavy, almost bold. It sounds like a problem with fonts. OOo does not load or render the correct font weight or attribue, and it results in geometry (strings positions) not matching the display (strings length). I hope I get it now. It seems that the main problem to you is, that OOo doesn't change the format for some cells in a marked range. But OOo works here as designed. You don't like this behaviour, so your issue would be a request for enhancement. But you need no new issue, please look at issue 26225. I think it fits to your wish. Your comment in the attached document is wrong. The entry 222 will not change to a number, when A2 gets the format "number - standard", but it will get an apostroph in front and remains text (German 1.9.125 on WinXP). OOo was designed to work this way, so no bug. Issue 23348 handles the fitting request for enhancement. The third thing is, that OOo doesn't calculates with texts, but that is issue 27241 and 5658, as you already said. Altogether there is no real new issue here and you should close it therefore. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. FYI, doing autoconf is necessary if you checkout config_office from maxosx11, because configure must be regenerated. About my changes : "--without-nas" switch is proposed when configure --help is entered. So take care of this switch is IMHO the most simple. I just still hesitate and I don't know if I keep or not if "$_os" == "Darwin" in the test. If ever I delete this part of the test, I'll enable the use of nas without any change, just when --without-nas is not in configure command line. Of course, this will become true if someone makes nas buildable a day for Mac OS X (else, the break will come back). In counterpart, I force the builder to use --without-nas switch every time. [sc-issues] [Issue 53833] Formatting failure leads to calculation error

In summary; * Issue 5658 deals with importing an XLS file and calculating the results of a text cell. No formatting changes are made. * This issue (issue 53833) deals with an OpenDocument spreadsheet -- created from-scratch and not necessarily saved. Block formatting changes from text to numeric are ignored. Therefor, this issue is not a duplicate of issue 5658. The first note I posted and the follow on notes by Steve and Jacek document the steps required to reproduce this problem. To eliminate any potential confusion, here are the exact steps you can perform to see that this is not the same issue as issue 5658; * Open a new Calc spreadsheet. * Click on cell A2. * Change the formatting of A2 to "text, @". * Click on cell B2. * Verify format of B2 is "numeric, general". * Click on C2. * Enter the formula "=sum(a2:b2)". * Click on A2. * Enter 1 for the value. (NOTE: The value in the Input Line is just 1 not '1 or similar.) * Click on B2. * Enter 2 for the value. * Click on another cell. (This will commit the value of 2 in B2.) * C2 shows a calculated value of 2. * IMPORTANT: Select both A2 and B2 at the same time. * Bring up the format dialog. It shows "numeric, general". * Click OK to issue the change. * C2 shows a calculated value of 2. It should have been 3! * The format of A2 is still "text, @" not "numeric, general" as Calc was instructed to do. Note: Selecting column A and changing the formatting also has no impact on cell A2 being in "text, @" format. In summary: selecting a block and changing the format of the block from text to numeric does not change the cell from text to numeric -- the cell remains text. Please read through the steps required to reproduce this as there are specific conditions required to see this problem and they are easy to miss. This is a high or critical issue by definition; * It is a break in functionality. -- Changing formatting from text to numeric does not work over blocks.(!!!) * The defect can easily be missed by both novice and expert; it is not a cosmetic or medium problem. -- Block formatting is something that should reliable, and in this case it is ignored. On moderately complex sheets, it is not reasonable that a novice or even an expert would notice that the calculation is incorrect. * Data loss or a miscalculation is the result. -- Unlike issue 5658, this is a formatting problem but the results still are that the calculation performed is not what Calc is instructed to perform. As such, a higher priority (top or second from top) is appropriate. (I tend to use 4 severity levels -- ISO, IEEE, and IBM use similar definitions -- instead of the 5 used here, and under those this would be a critical aka 'showstopper' as data loss / miscalculation is involved and the workaround can not be expected to be performed by experts consistently let alone casual users.) - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
