Downloaded IBM's Lotus Symphony Beta, and this does indeed break down CJK vs
Western counts, and produces the same results as MS Word for the sample text
included at the top of my upload from 16 Sep 2005. I had read somewhere that
Lotus Symphony was supposed to be based somehow on OOo, but briefly looking over
the app makes it look like it's built on Eclipse; perhaps it just borrows code
from OOo for .odt support, and thence the confusing media articles? As I am
wholly ignorant of the internals, this may be a foolish question, but is there
any possibility of using Symphony's more accurate word-count breakdown code in
OOo?

Confirmed that mixed CJK + Western documents still have useless word / character
counts, as of version 2.3. Target still vaguely set to "OOo Later" -- does this
have any hope of resolution in 3.0?

Do we really have to wait for OOo 3.0 for this patch to land? I was hoping it
would be part of OOo 2.3. It's a pain to fire up VMware everytime we need to
work with a document containing OTFs.

I confirm the problem. Also, if you start a line off in italics then leave
italic mode, you get the corresponding problem.

Every time I update OO, my desktop and shortcut bar shortcuts break. This has
been the case since OO version 1.0. Can this be fixed in future releases?

It's a minor annoyance to delete them and copy the new ones from the Program
Group on the Start bar, but is it really necessary? I can't think of another
piece of software (out of more than 200 apps I have installed) that
(mis-)behaves that way.

This is a repeat of issue 58428 which was closed, due to being fixed, in May of
last year.

Today I downloaded and installed 2.3 on two different Linux machines.
Configured JMF to make sure sounds were playing and tried to export a
Presentation to html/Flash or PowerPoint format.

In all cases the slides were present but there was no sound. The original sound
files were wav files.

I tried to open the ppt files in Impress again but there was no sound. To
ensure that there was a sound issue, I then tried the presentation on two
different Windows XP computers. In neither case was there any sound.

I originally tried in Office 2.2 from both Fedora and OOo's own site with no
success either. I am waiting for responses on the OOo users mail list to see if
anyone is successful with exporting sound files.

I am adding the sound with "Insert > Movie and Sound" and have the sound
configured to play when the slide opens. There is no sound icon in the PPT
file. There are no references to sound in the html files.

The presentation had to be completed in, the shame of it, PowerPoint as it was
required today.

Hi bm,

This is the new patch for the issue.
I did not use the "m_bWarningWasShown" to make the warning box come up only
once per error according to your suggestion in IRC meeting, I found it was not
a good design.:-)
So I added several funtions to do that.
Please let me know if you have any suggestion.
Thanks a lot.

thomasroswall: True, I think my work-around and your GUI approach do
essentially the same thing, except that mine applies only to OOo whereas your
approach presumably applies to any program. I do not know how much of a
security risk this particular feature addresses, but somebody thought it enough
of a risk to address in SELinux!

pescetti: The first place I looked was in the release notes, and didn't find
anything helpful. Now that I know the problem is a security issue blocked by
SELinux, I still can't find it mentioned in the release notes by following the
Release Notes link from the download page
(http://download.openoffice.org/2.3.0/index.html). Okay, I just discovered
another set of release notes on the wiki where it is mentioned with the
unacceptable work-around of disabling security completely. The end user is
never going to see those release notes anyway since they aren't referenced from
the download page.

I can confirm the problem on Oo 2.3 with both italics and bold on Windows XP
Home
SP2. It is not document related. It happens on a blank new document.

Quote from the Oo Writer forums:

arjwf said:

Hmmm, a possibly-related problem: sometimes OOO 2.3 won't let you even start
using
bold/italics/underline if that attribute was used at the beginning of the line.
For me, this
reproduces the problem every time:

(1) Start OOO Writer.
(2) Press Control-B (or click the Bold icon) and type "foo", then press
Control-B again.
(3) Type " bar " (a space, then 'bar', then another space)
(4) Press Control-B (or click the Bold icon) and type 'baz'.

Step (4) will NOT turn on bold mode, as it should, and the 'baz' will not
appear in bold.
Oddly, italics and underline work just fine.

Similarly, if you start the line with underline instead of bold, then 'baz'
won't appear in
underline (but bold or italics work fine.)

Open attached sheet. File - Export as PDF. Choose All/Pages(1). Export. PDF
renders fine. PDF is correct.

Open attached sheet. Select Left chart. File - Export as PDF. Choose Selection.
Export. PDF crashes renderers. PDF is incorrect.

Evidently there is a bug in the renderer. But the exported PDF is broken and
thus not useful.

There is no way in a context menu or while editing an embedded chart to save or
export just that chart. I want to export a chart, preferably as SVG, so I can
put it on my web page.

Scenario:
Create a spreadsheet of some numbers. Add a chart. Try save/export just that
chart, as either ODF or SVG or PDF etc, while in sheet mode. Edit the chart to
switch to that mode then try save/export just that chart.

Exporting to PDF does the sheet include numbers and other values. Exporting PDF
and selecting selection generates an unrenderable PDF. Exporting xhtml doesn't
export the charts.

Due to this unexpected change I stumbled over being unable to install
dictionaries. In terms of Windows conformity a link is clickable to activate
(not ctrl-clickable in this sense)

I am displeased with this change and suggest to revert back at least in the
Windows arena which clearly defines a link is clickable!

I proposed this issue as a show-stopper but it was not even discussed.
I proposed it as a must-fix for 2.3.1 following the appropriate procedure
http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=releases&msgNo=10969
but nobody answered (apart from marketing, who decided to include this in the
release notes).

If I use a connection to the printer as \\\ I get the long
delay till the document has opened. If I map the printer to lpt via "net use
lpt2: \\\" and use this indirect connection as default
printer, then the document opens fast. But the question remains, why the printer
influences the opening of a document containing formulas.

I think this does the same as the setting in the GUI I mentioned. Your
suggestion is much easier because it is independant af languages.
We will put that as a remark on the danish release page, thanks.

I agree that 2.4 should not be the target. 2.x.1 releases is for fixing bugs,
right? Target should be 2.3.1

The MediaWiki export currently does ignore background colors (e.g.) in tables.
This enhancement has been requested originally by Jan van der Meulen by personal
mail.

The transformations from http://xsltml.sourceforge.net/ produce quite good
results on MathML produced by OOo. Unfortunately, there is a difficulty
integrating this transformation, because formulas are not stored in the main
contents.xml of a document. Therefore, the formula markup is not at all
presented to the XSLT filter during export. I'm not sure, if one can use the
XSLT function document(object, node-set?) from within a filter to access other
parts of the exported document. Maybe somebody from the core OOo team can
clarify this?

For such a fabulous product with such promise it is disappointing that we cant
get something as useful as dual page editing. Given the explosion of cheap
wide-screen monitors you would think that after 6 years this issue would have
been solved. I would LOVE to stop using MS all together but I edit and write
large documents almost every day and so depend on the side-by-side comparison
and editing of Words dual page view. I was so disappointed that after upgrading
to 2.3 this is still not supported. And I really hate having to run Word. All I
can do is hope I guess.

Scrolling becomes better for me, if I first do tools > Update > Page formatting.
But editing formulas is nearly impossible. If I doubleclick a formula, I have to
wait 55 seconds till the math command window opens. The attached document has no
problems in OOo2.2.1

The csv import is broken. The dialog window doesn't contains text from file, but
some binary garbage.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Start OOo Calc
2) Open some csv file
3) Dialog window doesn't show the file content correctly

This is a show stopper, folks--this should never have been released with such a
major flaw. Sure, us geeks can get around it, but don't we want non-geeks to
use OOo as well? And suggesting users disable security (other than for
debugging) is a non-starter!

This should be targeted for 2.3.1, and SHOULD have been fixed in 2.3.0. (How
can I recommend anybody try OpenOffice.org when it won't run as installed?)

With a little help from http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?p=246394 I
discovered that executing the following command (as root) in directory
/opt/openoffice.org2.3/program is a work-around:

chcon -t texrel_shlib_t *.so

Ok, I can reproduce the issue. Although there is a NBSP character in the filter
output, this is either lost during cutting&pasting into the Wiki edit field or
it is swallowed by the MediaWiki software.

I'll fix this in the filter by quoting exactly this character as   as
Norbert suggested.

Ctrl+Up Arrow and Ctrl+Down Arrow are very handy for moving paragraph(s) up or
down, but they won't move the indicated paragraphs past a table. If would be
nice if these actions could move paragraphs past a table.

Likewise, it would be nice if you could select a whole table, then use Ctrl+Up
Arrow and Ctrl+Down Arrow to move a table up or down through a document.

I found out, that the problem is caused by the arrow.
Please remove all objects, except the arrow from the document.

Then select, copy and paste it as bitmap: Now you can see that the white area is
bigger than the minimum box around the arrow!

I found out more:

In draw, objects can be selected by "pulling" rectangles with the mouse. Objects
that are COMPLETELY within that rectangle are selected after releasing the left
mouse button.

If you try to select the arrow with that method by pulling a rectangle that has
exactly the size of the arrow or minimal bigger, the arrow is NOT selected!

The selection-rectangle has to be a bit bigger as the minimum box around the
arrow. It looks like this "more size" that is needed to select the arrow is
exactly the border that is copied/exported.

I hope you understand what I mean. Please let me know if you need a better
description.

This particular problem is not just an enhancement request; it's a fundamental
design flaw that has plagued OO.o from day one. Sad, but a large number of the
issues tracked here are either a direct result of this design flaw or an
indirect result of the hacks necessary to work around it. You can't select a
paragraph, copy and paste it somewhere else and preserve its formatting sanely.
Lots of operations that are simple x/c/v actions in other programs turn into
arcane sequences of adding a sacrificial blank paragraph, doing the obvious
thing, then removing the temporary paragraphs. The same selection under cut,
copy, and paste, may behave differently depending on how the selection was made,
all because the formatting of the paragraph is not stored in the paragraph mark
(figuratively speaking of course).

The whole "delete a P-mark and the leading para's format wins/backspace a P-mark
and the trailing para's format wins" thing is... cute, but it's seriously
flawed. Removing a P-mark should have one consistent consequence. Then a whole
lot of other weird emergent problems simply evaporate, and a lot of special-case
code can evaporate with it.

Hi,

- please open the attached odt

- press ctrl+a to select all

- press ctrl+c to copy it into clipboard

- paste as Bitmap or GDI metafile:

Note that the pasted image has a border. In case of Bitmap you can see the
problem better because of its white background on the gray page background.
But the GDI metafile has the same problem: You can see it on the green points
after you have selected it.

Exporting the selection into a file is affacted by the bug too. (attached png)

[lingucomponent-issues] [Issue 13376] no iso code for different German orthographies

My issue was just redirected here (81788 -> 67386).
The situation is that the new user (not me) prefers the old german orthography
and stumbled upon the non-functionality of the "use old german orthography"
checkbox.
Therefore, if it is non-functional, it should be removed/hidden independent on
this discussion (therefore my vote).
Next, one workaround could be that the old german orthography could be
downloaded from somewhere to substitute the OOo files. This way, the spell check
would be according to the OOo installation (or user? if user-file). Admittedly,
only a work around.

My example is even better. This is the background I used in my lectures during
2006/2007 academic year. OO 2.1 exported it all right. Both OO 2.2 and 2.3
destroy the background in identical way - making it unusable as I expect light
and dark blue background in wrong places.

The example comes from Windows version of OO 2.3.

OpenOffice.org Writer becomes too slow with documents with many embedded
formulas. Simple task as scrolling down the doc. may take several minutes.
Opening an embedded formula to edit takes up to 15 seconds.
Besides, the document size gets increased: the doc. was 1.5 MB stored with OOo
2.2.1, 2.23 MB stored with 2.3.

You can do your testing with the French how-to:
http://fr.openoffice.org/Documentation/How-to/Math/how-to_math.odt

or my own how-to:
http://www.arielconstenlahaile.com.ar/ooo/docs/ARIEL_OOoMATH_INTRO.odt

You will see that it is impossible to work in these conditions.

The new behaviour has been implemented because of many new users, who were used
to MS_Word-behaviour. That's okay. But what about all those OOo-users who are
accustomed to and love the "old" behaviour (like me)?!
I definitely want the possibility to have a choice.
Does everything which made OOo different from Word, have to disappear slow by
slow? This is not the right way, in my humble opinion.

Hi,

not a bug from OOo but a missunderstanding in the Users point of view. It's just
a matter of relative / absolute addressing. If you like to have the Sheet
refference fixed, use a '$' sign like $Sheet2.$B$65 .

Gestern Abend ging ich zu Fuß vom Abguss zum Fluss und musste dabei acht geben,

The first line is the old german orthography, the second line in the new. The
(admittedly stupid) phrases where composed based on
"http://www.duden.de/deutsche_sprache/neue_rechtschreibung/beispiele/a.php";.

The spellchecker always marks the first phrase as wrong independant of the

Poking at this again, because it's still a great feature of PowerPoint that is
lacking/buggy/whatever in Impress.

In PowerPoint, a text box contains text. If you have too much text, the text
sizes are tweaked so that your text, well, fits in the text box.

In OOo, your text just runs right over the edge of the text box. What's the
point of a text box then, exactly? Seems like defective text box behavior to me
(hence reassigning as DEFECT, hopefully to get some fresh blood on this
problem).

Bumping to current version as well.

If I have a formula (in Sheet1) that references an external sheet, like
=A41+Sheet2.B65
and then insert a row above it, the formula will change to
=A42+Sheet2.B66

but it should not change the reference to Sheet2, because no rows were inserted
in Sheet2.

rene: Sorry, but I cannot reproduce your breakage. I rewinded your change and
moved my source tree to 'rt/test~dir/rt22/SRC680' - everything works fine. I
changed misc. internal path variables to something containing '~' in a debugger
run - either the script crashed already in parameter checking or ran smoothly.
So, I tend to just undo your change and resolve this issue with 'worksforme'.
Could you please check whether you still need additional quoting? Just remove
the 'quotemeta' directive in line 151 and see whether you run into problems.
Patch for that would be

I cannot see the same problem. Maybe you should delete your OOo config folder
from c:\Documents and setting\[username]\Application data. Could be, that this
has suffered from installig OO 2.3 over 2.2.

Openoffice 2.3. is extremely slow compared to 2.2. Opening documents, editing
and recovering from crashes gives a blank window for a long time before I can
perform the next action. Originally I installed 2.3 over 2.2 but since I got
these problems I removed 2.3 completely and installed it again to no avail. I'm
running on a PC with limited memory on which OO 2.2 ran fine. I will have to
revert back to OO 2.2 because 2.3 is unworkable. Don't know if the other
applications have the same issue in 2.3

Creating an executable could be a problem because OOo works on different
platforms. I see tow solutions:
1- A lightweight Impress player (viewer) on each platform. It should support all
features supported when playing a Presentation from OOo.
2- A kind of self contained Java executable. Maybe an Applet that could be
embedded into a web page. There are still some differences from platforms when
packaging Java executable code, but its still easier that packaging native
executable code.

- start an Impress
- insert a text box with some text
- assign the text animation scroll back and forth
- it doesn't matter if you select start inside or not the animated text starts
always inside the text box.
