OO.org Writer does not allow using alternative measurement units in dialog
boxes. In previous versions (2.4.0) when I entered e.g. paragraph spacing in an
unit other than the default measurement unit (pt=point instead of
cm=centimeters), OO.org converted it to the default units. In OO.org 2.4
(hungarian build downloaded from http://hu.openoffice.org) no conversion
happens.

Steps to reproduce:

1)Format menu -- Paragraph
2)Enter in spacing before 6 pt

Result: “6 cm” is in the box.
Expected result: “0,21 cm”

This bug is annoying because if I want to keep half line spacing above a
paragraph I can easily calculate that half line=12pt/2=6 pt. Now I have to
convert it manually into centimeters.

Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) (English interface)

This is surely not a defect. I don't think that this fits to our build process.

I've read all the comments.

- Indeed, I sometime miss what Kohei writes: save a changed view in a
spreadsheet.
- However, since the only thing needed to do to be able to save, is hit
backspace, I can't find thàt trouble is important enough to change a long time
known, by many appreciated and distinguish behaviour of OOo.
You may expect that users wanting to save the spreadsheets with a different
view, will be users smart enough to do this.

(About competitive analyses: being slightly different as the competition, giving
people some things to learn and then a chance to appreciate their new knowledge
of smart features in the new office suite, also is marketing.)

so a clear -1 for me

System:
Intel Dual Core 2.8 GHz

nVidia GeForce 8600 GT with 256 MB onboard RAM
Dual 160 GB SATA hard drives
Dual DVD +- RW

OS:
– Debian-Testing – fully updated as of Sun 13 Apr 2008

Version of OpenOffice:
Upgraded to OpenOffice.org-core 1:2.4.0-3+b1 this morning from OO 2.3

Problem:
Format Paragraph Indents and Spacing are expressed as % and line
respectively.
I can't change them to any other unit.
– typing in 0.3 cm for example it is changed back to 0.81%. Using other
units (inches, millimetres, ...) has no effect. And what is it a % of?
– Tools Options OO Writer General Measurement Units has cm as the
default unit. Changing this to another unit has no effect in the paragraph
style.
– Similarly the Spacing is in lines and won't change to any other unit, such
as cm.

This happens with every one of my old documents that I've tried and those of my
wife. It also happens with new documents, such as this one.

If I go to Format Styles and Formatting Default Paragraph Modify, The
Indents and Spacing tab is in points and I can't change that!

Regards,
Ted VANDERNOOT

P.S. I prepared a sample document, but I couldn't find where/how to attach it to
this bug report. If you want it, please contact me.

In Microsoft Excel, Data Analysis and Data Analysis can be installed as a
plugin tool.
It can do things like summarising a data entry into mean, median, mode,
skewness, kurtosis, total, minimum, maximum, standard deviation, sample
variance, range and so on.
It is called decriptice statistics, in Data Analysis.

Can Open Calc do that? Enable installation?

I regularly install OO on windows machines. Often enough, in fact, for the
change in OO 2.4 to be very welcome - the pre-selection of xls and ppt file
associations in the windows installer dialog box.

I would welcome a post-install file associations manager, but suspect that for
many users they just wont 'get it'. The idea and concept of file association is
just too technical for them. Yes really! That is how brittle I observe many
user's understanding of computers is!

I feel that in the windows installer. all checkboxes for MSO file types should
be checked by default, UNLESS the installer detects MSO installed, where they
should by default be unchecked. Furthermore, docx, xlsx (and when operational,
pptx) file types should be associated with OO unless a version of MSO 2007 or
later is already installed.

It is a pain when installing Openoffice to have to manually navigate to
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop
then copy the shortcut from start-Openofficex.x/writer
to the desktop folder.

It would be nice if the installer automatically made it easy for people to
launch Openoffice by adding a desktop icon, just like most other windows
programs do, such as:
Firefox, Thunderbird, Adobe Acrobat, Audacity, Gimp, Free-AV and around 90% of
all others.

A checkbox, selected by default, in the windows installer Add icon to Desktop
would be great.

I accept and appreciate the principle of a tidy, uncluttered desktop, but most
programs in windows do tend to create a desktop icon unless told otherwise, and
desktop icons give an immediate view of the most important programs installed.
Openoffice is the most important program I install on Windows. I therefore
always need a desktop icon for the windows user to be reminded it is there.
Openoffice Writer is probably the most used program in the suite, so is the most
suitable launcher for the desktop.

A clear -1 for me, too!

I especially like the greyed out Save button. A lot of other programs do the
same, like my favourite editor Notepad++.

A permanently active Save button will force me to save the document again and
again, because I will never be sure if it is saved or not.

OTOH, the user should never worry about saving the document and concentrate on
his work. OOo should allow this. In an ideal world, you wouldn't bother with
save at all.

CALLING THE MANUAL SPELLCHECKING FROM THE SPELLCHECKING CONTEXT MENU
The following problem has been found in the build “edgy-jdk-2474-notes2”.

There seems to be a related problem with the spellchecking dialog: Unknown words
are underlined and can be right-clicked to open the usual spellchecking dialog.
This dialog offers “Spellchecking...” which does nothing at the moment.
Normally, the manual spellchecking will be run.

WRONG STATE OF SPELLCHECKING TOOLBAR SYMBOL IF FOCUS IN NOTE WINDOW
The following problem has been found in the build “edgy-jdk-2474-notes2”.

The toolbar symbol which toggles the automatic spellchecking does not work as
expected when a Note Windows has the focus (focus: cursor is located in a Note
Window).

Steps to reproduce:
1.Create a document and enable automatic spellchecking (button of automatic
spellchecking is pressed)
2.Create a Note and enter some text (maybe with spelling mistakes)
3.Change the focus from the Note Window to the document text and back to the
Note Window

Expected behavior: The button for automatic spellchecking keeps activated,
because the spellchecking marks can be seen in both the document and the Note
Windows.

Current behavior: The button for automatic spellchecking changes it's state
(document text = on; Note Window = off).

In contrast, the option in “Tools – Options – Language Settings – Writing Aids:
Check spelling as you type” works as expected.

~~~
Furthermore, the state of the spellchecking toolbar symbol can not be changed
when clicking on it.
Steps to reproduce (use the document created in the steps above)
4.Set the cursor in the Note Window, the Note Window has now the focus.
5.Click on the symbol automatic spellchecking
Expected behavior: Spellchecking can be turned off/on.
Current behavior: The button for automatic spellchecking can not be activated
(pressed) and spellchecking will remain activated.
SETTING THE LANGUAGE DOES NOT WORK AT ALL (SELECTED TEXT / PARAGRAPH / ALL TEXT)
The following problem has been found in the build “edgy-jdk-2474-notes2”.
Writer provides several ways to change the language of a portion of text or the
complete document:
the menu “Tools – Options – Language Settings – Languages: Default languages for
documents”
the application menu “Tools – Language – For Selection OR For Paragraph OR For
all Text”
the status bar by using the context menu.
No one of these options do work in the Notes.
Steps to reproduce (languages are just examples):
1.Create a document and enter some German words (make sure that the document
language is still English)
2.Create a Note and enter some German words
3.Change the document language by: “Tools - Language – For all Text: German
(Germany)”
Expected result: The automatic spellcheck marks do disappear because the correct
language is now set properly.
Current result: Nothing happens and the spellchecking marks will remain in BOTH
Notes Windows and document text.
4.Move the focus to the document text
5.Change the document language by: “Tools - Language – For all Text: German
(Germany)”
Expected result: The automatic spellcheck marks do disappear because the correct
language is now set properly for all elements.
Current result: The automatic spellcheck marks dissappear in the document text,
BUT nothing happens in the Notes Windows. There, the language is not changed.
PLEASE NOTE: It has NOT yet decided by the iTeam how to handle language settings
which refer to the whole document.
The following behavior are just rough ideas:
1.If the user wants to change the language setting for the whole document, then
the Notes should respect this setting like the document text does (change of
language setting: e.g. “Default languages for documents” or “For all Text”).
[Open Questions: Does this interfere with the specification to adapt the
formatting of time and date of the Note Property Data according to the system
language? Can we make sure that the user really wants to use the same language
in the text?]
2.If the user changes the setting for the document or the whole text, then only
the setting for the normal document text changes. The language setting for the
Note Windows is inherited from the OpenOffice.org language setting. In general,
the user will be able to change the language in the Notes Windows; but only for
one Note Window, paragraphs or selections.
Please contact the iTeam which behavior should be implemented.
@ nickhill: Your last comments have nothing to do with this issue: Allow for
MSOffice file associations post-install. The desktop icon will be introduced
with OOo 3.0. Defaulting OOo to the MS file types unless MSO is installed is a
bad habit we don't want to adopt.
[Issue data has been moved from issue #85870 to cover the more general aspects
of the visibility of the Notes Side Pane.]
The following problem has been found in the build “edgy-jdk-2474-notes2”.
Current behavior: If there are no Notes in the document, then changing the
setting “View – Notes” will not show the Note Side Pane nor any Notes. This does
not correspond to a fundamental law of interaction design: providing feedback on
actions. So this may lead to usability issues with that functionality.
Proposed behavior (Please note that this issue does NOT fully describe the
desired behavior. It is intended to give you some ideas how this could be
implemented. Please refer to the specifications in the Notes2 wiki for more
information or contact me directly.):
If a document is opened which contains Notes, then both Notes Side Pane and
Notes are shown (Notes – View is activated)
If a document is opened which does not contain Note(s), then the Notes Side Pane
is not shown (Notes – View is deactivated)
If no Note(s) are contained in the document, the Notes Side Pane is not shown
and the user activates Notes – View, then the Notes Side Pane will be shown.
If a Note is inserted and the Note Side Pane is not shown, then both Note
Windows and Note Side Pane will be shown (Notes – View is activated).
If the Note Side Pane is shown and all Notes are deleted (deleted: no Note
present in the document), then the Note Side Pane will stay open. (Notes – View
will remain active) (Currently, the Note Side Pane is closed automatically if no
Note is present in the document.)
The proposed behavior tries to first address the needs of the user (e.g. when
opening the document) and will then try not to be too 'smart'.
Please note: It may be very useful, if the visibility of the Notes and the Note
Side Pane could be controlled in a more direct manner. This may include a
control element in the horizontal ruler bar (please refer to the specification
in the Notes2 wiki), an entry for the Note Side Pane context menu or a context
menu entry for the Writer background “Wiese”. Please contact me when you start
to work on that proposals.
There is a sign that indicates the status of modification.
It is located in the center of the status bar at the bottom of window.
When a user modifies a document, an asterisk mark appears.
When a user makes undo or saves the document, the asterisk mark disappears.
This is the feature implemented before StarOffice 5.2 and even works today.
How about use of the feature or similar one?
Duplicating and locating it next to the Save icon button, etc...
Very often after upgrading Office our users get JRE is defective and no Java-
dependant function will work. JRE selection in settings would not get saved
either.
The only known way out of this is to delete javasettings_Windows_x86.xml (or
complete user profile).
The root cause is that Office can't overwrite javasettings_Windows_x86.xml.
I am attaching sample javasettings_Windows_x86.xml that exhibits the problem.
Repro:
1. Close Office inclusing quickstarter.
2. Save attached file to x:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application
Data\OpenOffice.org2\user\config\ (making backup of original).
3. Start Office, select JRE in Options, click OK.
4. Close and open Office - JRE is not selected.
a) I assume that your desktop environment is KDE or something ?
b) How about trying the above alternative patch along mmeeks suggestion (as used
in other similar shell components), does that resolve your problem ?
If it does (or even if it doesn't actually) then I suggest we open another
issues for the specific issue of non-gtk using environments and attach the patch
rather than following the alternative approach of rolling back the changes done
for this originally issue which of course would return to the previous state of
not working with = gnome 2.10
Have done further investigation and found a similar if not same problem
mentioned on issue 53811 which seems to be in the 'not solved' state.
Forum reports that can be associated to this problem:
- http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=26408
- http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=26059
My first install was 2.2.0 Italian and have installed the updates till 2.3.0
Italian. I have skipper 2.3.1 Italian and went for 2.4.0 Italian directly.
All have 1 thing in common and that the problem occurs on Windows XP with
multiple accounts including non administrator/power users accounts.
During the installation I chose 'Every account of this computer' and noticed
that the 'Only for this account ()' was missing the name of the actual account.
Shadow for the Note Window, if the anchor is hovered (mouse pointer, text
cursor). This solution requires new functionality of the OOo framework.
I have opened an ODT document and when I go to TOOLS-OPTIONS, then
OPENOFFICE.ORG WRITER submenu, when I click on each item there, one by one, when
I click on COMPATIBILITY, a floating check box appears just a few cm above
COMPATIBILITY, right next to VIEW and FORMATTING AIDS (to the left of them).
If I compress/expand the OPENOFFICE.ORG WRITER submenu, it goes away, but I can
make it come back again by following the same process.
I thought it would be very cool if OOO would allow users to change the
appearance of the program by allowing for a background image to be displayed
instead of just being able to select a color (which is by far better than
nothing!).  Compare with MS Office2007 applications, which have a cool blue
gloss-like wallpaper behind each document.  I don't think a feature such as this
would be too difficult to implement, and what a change it'd make!
Thanks!
I am using few other window managers (fluxbox, dwm, etc.). It should not matter
what desktop environment I am in, since this is all X11.
However, I _do_ have gtk library installed (also qt* for that matter).
X11 has really no idea of the desktop environment and I think this is not so
bad. It does not really matter (as long as it's X11 and not Windows/Aqua of
course).
The problem with this approach is that GTK is not getting initialized
*anywhere*. This patch attempts to dynamically use GTK features without
initializing it. It may work if something *else* by chance registers GTK types.
Do you know how this happens? (Mozilla integration or something else?)
Besides, why should the gtk recent file list updated _only_ when we are running
GNOME environment? There are possibly other applications that can use this list
and GNOME is not required for that?
My proposal is to have a separate GTK integration component, that will (1) check
if gtk is there, (2) what features it supports (i.e. is this gtk new enough to
support recent manager and system tray (3) initialize GTK properly.
I like g_object_get_class()-like much better because it does not imply to much
about my environment - it checks the *right thing* straight away.
Then you can use window-manager-based guesses to determine whether user wishes
to have GNOME, KDE or whatever File-Open dialog. Since I personally dislike
GNOME improved file dialogs I wish I am not stuck with it just because the gtk
is available on my system.
We *may* work it around the same way as external/libegg/source/eggtrayicon.c is
doing, but I don't think it's worth it in the long run.
In the last weeks we got at least few persons suddenly complaining cannot save
ODT files, OOO crashes, etc. etc. on the FreeBSD lists and I don't think this
feature is worth it. It just makes too many environmental assumptions.
That's why I think it is important to backout this feature for now out of the
main tree and continue working on this and other aspects of GTK integration.
I will be more than happy to work on this as well. I will also have a look at
your patch as soon as I get my DEV300_m5 working again.
The issue: When Underlining, making Italic, or making Bold words at (or near)
the end of a line in a multiline paragraph, sometimes the text modified will be
improperly moved to the following line, leaving a large unused space at the end
of the original line.
Pictures are better than words:
Before underlining: http://www.vorklift.com/temp/ooo/Normal.png
After underlining: http://www.vorklift.com/temp/ooo/Underlined.png
This particular paragraph will reproduce this error in a new document (retyped
from scratch, not copied).
See: http://www.vorklift.com/temp/ooo/Broken.odt - underline the word gone in
the first paragraph to reproduce.
This issue is intermittent and does not occur regularly. I have been unable to
find any other paragraphs that reproduce this error. Version is the Alpha
snapshot of the OSX Aqua build. I have not tested on other platforms.
Currently, the presenter screen is a feature in development [1]. I looked
through the specification documents and got some questions concerning the
visibility of the feature to the end user. At the moment only seems to
consider usage scenarios of power users who a) know that this feature exists and
b) have access to external monitors in advance.
Example: This feature is important for people who rarely present their work,
e.g. people who present their diploma thesis. It would help those people if
things like notes or the next slide could simply be provided. In fact, it
would greatly enhance their experience with OpenOffice.org  if this feature
would just work.
---
Q: How to enable the feature?
In [2] there is no direct reference how to activate the Presenter Screen. It
seems that the Presenter Screen is activated, if the user selects a
multi-monitor setup in the Slide Show -- Slide Show Settings... dialog.
User do generally think in features (or better in: results) instead of
configuration, therefore many users may not be able to access this feature
because they just don't know about it. Currently the feature is activated
implicitly.
---
Q: How to enable the use of other screens?
The descriptions in [3] state, that other screens can be selected if they are
present on the system. This seems to neglect the usual usage scenarios for
giving presentations. Very often, people do not have the chance to test and set
the configuration in advance, e.g. setup the computer during conference
presentations, people which do not own a second screen, waiting audience in the
business environment.
It would be great if the configuration would provide something like make
automatic use of the presenter screen if more than one screen is present on the
system instead of you can only select a second screen if there is already one
connected to the system.
---
I'm sorry if any of the given information is incorrect. I did not have the
chance to test this feature in the real word because of the lack of a second
monitor.
Idea collection:
* State the feature Presenter Screen more prominently in the UI.
* Make it possible to let the user select the use of the Presenter Screen in
advance (although there may be only one monitor present on the system).
* Try to automatically detect the monitors suitable for the Presenter Screen
and the Presentation View and use them.
* If the user does not want to use that configuration, make it possible to
disable it or re-configure the screens in the Presenter Screen.
Thank you!
Currently, if you select a tool (the tool to draw rectangles), as soon as you
use it, the cursor goes back to the default state. Thus, if you want to draw 2
rectangles, you need to:
- select the rectangle tool
- draw the first rectangle
- select again the rectangle tool
- draw the second rectangle
that's annoying.
What is used in many graphical applications (inkscape, illustrator...) is that
you keep the tool selected as long as you don't select another tool or press the
escape key. I think this behaviour would be better.
I use Mepis Linux 7 (Debian Etch derivative), with KDE 3.5.8. Since installing
DEV300m6, I get a KDE crash report whenever I exit an OOo application. Simply
opening an OOo app and closing it gives a SIG 6, opening, editing, saving, and
then closing gives a SIG 11. This did NOT occur with m5.
Data integrity does not seem to be effected.
I suspect that KDE is logging this somewhere, and could take a look if pointed
to the right file.
I use the .debs from Pavel Janik's builds at
http://ftp.linux.cz/pub/localization/OpenOffice.org/devel/DEV300/
The UnoAPI-Tests sometimes crashes the office. Currently I can reproduce the
crash on Linux.
To reproduce this behavior just start your office with parameter
-accept=socket,host=0,port=8100;urp;
and call inside a solar shell:
checkapi -o sc.AccessibleEditableTextPara_HeaderFooter
Note: you have to run the test several times.
Problem SOLVED.
The solution consisted in restoring the standard permissions on the
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT node of the registry.
On one forum someone mentioned that after installing Acrobat Reader 8.1, which
I have indeed installed after OOo 2.3.0, the root node of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT had
the permissions scrambled (see here: http://forum.soft32.com/win3/Restore-
default-registry-permissions-ftopict57863.html).
As turned out, on HKCR I had only 'Everyone' with 'Full control'.
I have restored them to what appears to be the standard, following indications
found on another site, that is:
Administrators: 'Full control' on 'Selected key and all sub-keys'
CREATOR OWNER: 'Full control' on 'Sub-keys only'
Everyone: 'Read control' on 'Selected key and all sub-keys'
SYSTEM: 'Full control' on 'Selected key and all sub-keys'
I use XP HOME. Owners of XP Professional should verify/set the 'Power Users'
group as well.
I tried to import a file as csv and used the standard and when the file was
imported, the file contained several fields as date, other as text... so i tried
to enforce the text import for all column, but still i saw several entries as
date.
i tried to reduce the file to a text case that i will submit next. if i remove
one more line from the top, OOo 2.4.0 opens the file correctly. In the test case
the last line few lines show the problem, where several values are text and one
of then is set as date.
even worst, there isnt any easy fix for the wrong conversion, trying to convert
to text or number gives a totally different result, forcing the user to hand
correct the value
if i set that all column are text, OOo shouldn't try to do ANY detection of
format, so this is a bug
i'm using linux 64bits (slamd64 - slackware in 64bits), but OOo is 32bits, the
binary packaged downloaded from the OOo site. i dont have windows, so i cant
test in another OS
[framework-issues] [Issue 4414] Allow for MSOffice file ass ociations post-install
Helo Of,
I think you misunderstood, or maybe I wasn't clear enough; My suggestion was not
that at install time Openoffice should default to saving in MSO file formats. (I
do believe that users should easily be able to switch to a default behaviour of
saving in MSO file formats through a simple check box in the save dialogue, but
provided a notice in the save dialogue warns users against it).
My suggestion is simply that for any MSO file extension that OO can handle, but
is not already handled by an installed copy of MSO, the installer should, *by
default* - without the user having to make any settings changes, associate that
file type with OO.
By extension of this, if the installed version of OO is old enough to not
support xlsx and docx, the OO installer should, by default, associate these
with OO.
To put it another way, if a user has Microsoft Office installed on their system,
the user should need to click some check boxes at install time to tell the
installer they want Openoffice to become the default handler for the MSO file
types. If the user doesn't have Microsoft Office installed on their system, the
user should need to click some check boxes to tell the installer they *don't*
want OO to become the default handler for the file types. That way, I believe
the installer will guess what the user wants 90% of the time, and still give the
user complete control at install time.
AW: Indeed, happens when using insetr/horizontal ruler. It's just a DL refresh
error (CTRL+ALT+R fixes it), si i set it to P4.
AW-OD: What type of objects are these rulers? Normal DrawObjects? Where are
they inserted? There must be done something strange on object insert since after
inserting, the Overlay seems corrupted and the text cursor is blinking again at
the start of the ruler. Is this intended? Shouldn't the ruler be selected and
the mouse pointer in DrawingLayer mode?
Agree, the trailing cells/rows should be trimmed, or there should be a way of
doing it easily after the fact. I tried it manually,,, would take hours
manually. Even selecting all doesn't work, or selecting as long a range as
possible.
Please read the documentation before setting the priority and provide
information where the build is broken:
http://www.openoffice.org/scdocs/ddIssues_EnterModify.html#priority
Otherwise it is just an ungrounded misuse of the P1 target. Please follow the
rules, it is not so hard.
As for the localization, please provide the information how the localization
tools are affected. The localization process I know does not have to do anything
with the directories structure.
Additionally, if any tool is affected, please document it as a part of
requirement on the openoffice wiki page.
Till now you P1 setting is completely ungrounded.
