I've had this problem with ALL the versions that I have used since March 2005.
Here is the sequence:
1) Place the pointer in a paragraph that has the required format. Left-click.
2) Move the pointer up to the format painter. Left-click (or double-click,
depending on what I want).
3) Move the cursor down in the direction of the paragraph to be painted.
As soon as the pointer re-enters the editing pane, and the cursor changes to the
paintpot, the page jumps randomly such that the source paragraph is no longer
visible. I must scroll up or down to find the target paragraph.
The workaround is to bring the pointer round the outside of the pane (for
example, down the scroll bar) until I am level with the target paragraph. I can
now enter horizontally to the target paragraph without causing the page to
jump.
Another forum user ("TheGurkha") found the same problem:
"Yes, I see this too with 2.4 on XP.
It's as if there is a second 'cursor', an invisible one for the style painter.
When you enter the text pane it moves to where it was last.
It reminds me of the effect you get when editing text. If you scroll through
your document without moving the cursor and the start typing it hops back to
where the text cursor is."

I'm disappointed and I feel brushed off, as though I wasted my time trying to be of any assistance. Since this issue can't/won't be fices or even more closely evaluated, you've left me with no option but to stick with MS Offiece and that's bad IMO. The comment that these same problems occur in Word is also incorrect because m Word documents are stable: ALL work was originated in Word, the images were stable, and simply creating a .odt document via Save OR creating a PDF showed the problems rather spectacularly. I had to force quit the application after several minutes. I did restart immediately afterwards and was again confronted with the same wizard, i.e. previous settings or any memory of previous first startup were lost. Unlike the first time, the application came up without a hitch almost immediately. In summary, this installation worked, but there seems to be some corner case that creates a bad impression; an infinite hang is not a good sign. I am adding 1) for completeness only, because it was the one oddity that occurred. I highly doubt that 1) had anything to do with 2), though, I believe the error was related to me trying to move a window and was simply a finder error message (unable to move the Ooo folder out of the dmg while it was in use; i.e. not related to 2) at all).
