[framework-issues] [Issue 94354] No write access to webdav folders

--- Additional comments from m...@openoffice.org Mon Jan 12 07:41:27 +
2009 ---
The bug was reported for a special proprietary webdav client and it was tested
as such. But we did tests with direct webdav access also as well as with mounted
folders.

If a problem arises or not very much depends on the configuration of the webdav
server and it doesn't matter how the storage is accessed. The main problem is
that some servers don't accept "." at the beginning or "~" inside file names.
Both are parts of the lock files we try to create. In this case a lock file
can't be created and OOo 3.0 does not grant write access (no matter how you
access the storage: with a proprietary client, a windows mount or with http).

This issue should be resolved with the fix for issue 95809 that does not require
the creation of a lock file to allow for write access.

Thanks for your reply! I could not find this behavior documented anywhere, hence
this issue. A similar problem still exists however for documents that contain
both JPEGs and PNGs: "Lossless compression" leaves both unchanged, and "JPEG
compression" recompresses the JPEGs. I cannot find a way to make them both
JPEG-compressed, but leave already JPEG-compressed images unchanged. But this is
a minor issue, because now I can just compress everything to JPEG before
inserting pictures into OOO. It would also be nice if the compression behavior
was better documented.

@ptoye - Actually the query, "Test wrong", in the bug doc is not giving
erroneous results. A column used in an ORDER BY clause does not have to be part
of the result set. Meaning that if an alias is created to match an existing
column name in a query, and if these two identifiers can be found in multiple
tables in that query, then the SQL should include the table alias in the ORDER
BY clause in order to remove ambiguity. If this is not done then the parser
(HSQLdb parser here) will select a suitable candidate and in this particular
case that selection is not the one you wanted.

OK - look at the query again:

SELECT
"MainTable"."Id",
"Rooms"."Collation" AS "LCollation",
"Rooms_1"."Collation" AS "Collation"
FROM
"MainTable" AS "MainTable",
"Rooms" AS "Rooms",
"Rooms" AS "Rooms_1"
WHERE
"MainTable"."List location" = "Rooms"."ID"
AND
"MainTable"."Location" = "Rooms_1"."ID"
ORDER BY
"Collation" ASC

>From the perspective of the query parser there are two candidates for this
>ORDER
BY clause, Room.Collation and Room_1.Collation. The proper way to clear that up
then would be to tell it which to use:

ORDER BY
"Room_1"."Collation" ASC

The real problem here, IMO, is the fact that the Query Designer does not include
the table name(alias) in the ORDER By clause -

Checked this with both OO.o 3.0.1 RC1 and DEV300_m37.

Changing the summary line
from: Query gives wrong result when alias names clash with field names
to: Query designer does not include table alias in ORDER BY clause

Got this error today from OpenOffice 3.0.0 on a Mac (Intel, OS X 10.5.6), using
OO Draw.

OOo had been open for a couple of weeks in the background. Trying to Save or
Save As... the document as an .odg or .sxd gave me the error. Saving as xhtml or
StarDraw 5.0 .sda worked ok. Even after saving as an .sda document, saving to
OpenOffice formats gave this error until I restarted OpenOffice.

[Steps]
1. Create a Writer doc
2. "View" -> "Toolbars" -> "Media Playback"
3. left-click the black arrow on the right of the "Media Playback" toolbar, and
select "Visible Buttons" from the drop-menu.

[Result]
1. In DEV300m37 on windows XP, there're 2 lines in "Visible Buttons" submenu.
But the second line is blank. It controls the playback buttons' display/hide on
the "Media Playback" toolbar.

2. In DEV300m38 on Linux, after step 2, the whole toolbar is blank.

[Expectation]
The toolbar and item can display normally.

The first letter of a sentence is not capitalized when the last word of a
previous sentence is a number or special symbol.

Steps:

1.Run Open Office application
2.Create a new test document.
3.Chose Tools -> Auto Correct from the main menu. Check “Capitalize first
letter of every sentence” in both check boxes if unchecked.
4.Enter a sentence ending with a dot (or exclamation or question mark).
5.Enter space.
6.Enter the next sentence which last word is a number or special symbol (for
example: “I have 5.” or "It is $."). - The first letter of sentence is
capitalized. (Enter space)
7.Enter the next sentence – the first letter is not capitalised.

To me, the issue seems to be best described as turning off date/time
recognition, at least for dates and/or times that are not properly formatted.
Maybe the best way to do this is add a more detailed date/time recognition
format, where all permissable formats are enumerated in detail. (Something like
for normal number formats, but separately.)
And adding the option of permissive date format, and maybe permissive time
format, where alternate separators could be accepted.

e.g. for date one could have :
yy/mm/dd mm/dd yy-mm-dd /mm/dd would only accept as dates strings such as
09/02/22 (as 2009/02/22) or 09/21 (as 2009/09/21) or 08-11-23 (as 2008/11/23) or
2007/05/25, but not 2007-05-25 unless the permissive flag is set (wrong
separator)
(These examples all being in order year-month-day. Other orders could be used.)

Similarly for time.

An option to use system defaults would be useful, with the same option for
permissive separators.

Thus for those who wish to avoid auto-format of dates, one could select system
defaults in non-permissive mode, or even no formats (no system defaults and
empty list of formats)

(My personal option would be probably be the last.)

Personally I'd like dynamic row and column sizes, perhaps defaulting to 256
columns and 32k rows, if that would save any space.

In the transition from the old Openoffice 1 format to Openoffice 2 format, I
noticed that smaller spreadsheets generally doubled in size.
If this was due to doubling the number of rows, it would be advantageous to keep
the default at 32k rows for the generally more common smaller files.
(Often I use very small spreadsheets instead of text files for organizing
information.)

At the same time, unlimited dynamic sizes would accomodate the very large
spreadsheets that I and many others sometimes need.

In all previous crashes the crash recovery tool failed to run. This reported
crash was the one where I induced the rainbow pinwheel mouse icon (is that the
new bomb?).

This time the crash recover tool ran, and we submitted the bug report with "Bug
associated with issue 97956" inside the descriptive text.

I just noticed that bug 99654 did have a comment box, which I didn't see. The
bug tool I use at work has "comment on this issue" in the left menu and at the
bottom of the page. I looked in both those places, didn't see anything, and
decided the issue had turned to stone, the way they do for closed issues in my
issue tracker at work.

I think being able to insert into a block of merged cells is an excellent idea.
(It removes a major inconvenience associated with merged cells)

The idea of deletion across merged cells is potentially hazardous.
If that is allowed, there must be controls (confirmation, etc) to ensure no
unwanted loss of data.
Maybe allow deletion across merged cells if the data in the region being deleted
has already been deleted. (Making deletion a two-step process -- still much
faster, and easier to maintain the merged areas than unmerging/remerging.

My girlfriend's OpenOffice has been freezing up on a regular basis since
sometime in December.

Jan 11 16:28:48 x [0x0-0x35b35b].org.openoffice.script[17581]:
2009-01-11 16:28:48.137 soffice.bin[17582:10b]
*** -[NSStatusBarWindow containsMouse]: unrecognized selector sent to instance
0x18895a80

The error message is similar to bug 96654 which was closed "worksforme" due to
insufficient information, forcing me to open a new issue from scratch.

The log message time stamp is consistent with the last freeze this afternoon.
There are many such messages in the log file, which most likely correspond with
many previous freezes.

The freeze is not sufficiently predictable to reproduce exactly, but the general
scenario is consistent.

My girlfriend has two OpenOffice documents open side by side on the same screen
(might be partially overlapping). She wants to cut and paste many selections
from the source document to the target document. Sometimes the source or target
originated as MS Word docs and were later converted to ODT. At first we
suspected bad conversion, but lately we're not so sure.

Eventually a cut and paste effort locks up the UI (from a practical perspective,
more on that later). A mouse selection is made in one window, then a copy
action (usually via the right click menu), then a focus change to the alternate
window, which fails to display a cursor, and won't respond to a paste event. In
fact, at this point, no open Writer window will respond to interior mouse
clicks. OpenOffice must be killed and restarted.

I've been a software developer for 20 years, though I have only basic skills
under OSX. I sat down to examine the nature of the freeze, which is one of the
strangest I've seen.

The document windows will respond to window drags and focus changes, keeping the
window contents updated. The document interior and scroll bars are
unresponsive. No cursor is displayed. Most selected menu items go blink/blink
on mouse release and then do nothing. There are some exceptions. The
"preferences" menu item brings up a working preferences dialog. I think "about"
also worked. Nothing interior to the document works.

I was unable to find any toolbar icon which worked. The window min/max controls
work. I was able (once) to close a toolbox (moments later, Writer had a major
fault and all I had was a white window with a rainbow pinwheel.)

Controls on the bottom right corner of the frame continue to respond, but don't
do anything. I was able to interact with the page layout and zoom controls.

Here's where it gets interesting. The lower right window resize drag continues
to work. The surprise is it often manages to update the contents of the window
with respect to operations that hadn't appeared to do much. Double page layout,
zoom, and increment clicks on the vertical scroll wheel now suddenly take effect
in the redrawn content, but *only* during resize drag.

Sometimes the resize-drag is extremely laggy and sometimes when you stop to let
it catch up, it doesn't fully catch up (e.g. the lickable vertical scroll
antifreeze blob never appears on the scroll bar). It catches up again at the
next movement.

The yellow tool tip on the mouse wheel is also interesting. Vertical mouse
scroll becomes clearly evident when the next resize-drag is performed. Also,
during mouse scroll, the yellow tool tip *does* correctly update according to
the section you are scrolling over, *but* the window contents don't reflect this
until the next resize-drag.

I tried to make changes to the document contents with the tool bar and then
reveal those changes with a subsequent resize-drag, but never achieved this.

This Mac is a fully updated 10.5.6 with a 99% stock configuration. I once
applied one nasty under-the-hood patch to NeoOffice which I've since forgotten.
I have no idea why this Mac is afflicted when so many other identical
configurations out there don't seem to be.

This freeze has happened dozens of times. There was one case where a certain
paragraph when selected was freezing every time. Strangely, when I suggested
trying a drag-and-drop interaction, this worked fine. We no longer have the
document with t

As n...@openoffice.org said in issue #97882 that this is a limitation of current
implementation. So way forward, is it targeted for fix in ver. 3.1?
So far, I don't see that and this bug is more than 2 years.

changing property values via API does not reflect in the user interface,
example:

REM * BASIC *

Sub Main
  ThisComponent.Layermanager.Layout.IsVisible = False

End Sub

After the execution of this macro, the layer is still set as visible.
In addition, changing the property from the UI does not reflects at API level

This problem affects also the remaining boolean properties of this service:
IsLocked
IsPrintable

Your suggestion of using a customised template spreadsheet loaded by default
ALMOST works, with a few problems :

1) On charging a new document DIRECTLY (instead of from inside an existing
spreadsheet) one gets the original (non-customised) template spreadsheet.
(From an existing spreadsheet already loaded, the customised template is loaded
as expected.)

-- This should be easy to fix. (Hopefully soon)

2) As you have confirmed, one cannot change the default column width.
This and other unchangeable default formats should be explicitly changeable.

Thanks for your suggested links.
I really want to improve my favorite spreadsheet :)

You write "Currently all images are recompressed (if JPEG
compression is selected in the export options)".

Yes, if "JPEG compression" is chosen, the JPEGs, will be compressed.
If "Lossless compression" is chose, the the JPEGS won't be compressed.

Som what do you mean exactly?

(As it is not the first time you report issues: please try to sum up your
descriptions. Not big blocks of text, but bullet point descriptions and short
sentences will help us getting faster what the problem is. Thank you!)

1)
That's the problem of the defaults: 45% of the users want it "like this", 45%
users want it "like that" and well-minded 10% think about an option to choose
the default or better, a wizard to define all the defaults and appearing at
first OOo start...

This "Compatibility" option has been set by default, not only to respect an
*import* compatibility but also an interoperability (what MS users know as usual
from their word processor) reason. OOo simply behaves the same as MS Word.

So, yes, we've done it in purpose.

2)
Besides the pure compatibility argument, one could argue about the both
behaviors in both ways:
- "It doesn't make sense to have a space above the first paragraph". -> your
point of view and I agree
- "I have set a spacing in the paragraph style so expect it to be displayed
everywhere". -> Another point of view which is also meaningful...

Considering this I will close this issue because of 1).
Maybe you could discuss this on the User Experience (UX) mailing list.

Most applications have this feature and it would seem to take less guesswork out
of ‘recovering’ a file. You would be able to remove the AutoRecovery dialog box
out of the program. The only thing that would be done is to simply open the file
from the time it was last saved, which is all that AutoRecovery is supposed to
do anyway. You wouldn’t need an external file unless you wanted to include an
optional backup file like the Boxer Text Editor does.

I was undecided whether this was a feature or enhancement. I went with
enhancement. I also was unsure which component this came under.

It wasn’t on two different tables. It was on two different spreadsheets. It put
the name to the cell in spreadsheet #2 corresponding to where it was on
spreadsheet #1.

I did copy the table over from one spreadsheet to another, but once in a
different spreadsheet, the name should have been allowed to be assigned to a
cell in the spreadsheet that the table was moved to instead of naming the
corresponding cell. Even so, I should have been able to un-name the cell and
give the name to the cell of choice in the second spreadsheet. Failing the name
change, I should have been able to delete the name from the drop-down box like
it was designed to. I right-clicked on the name, it gave ‘delete’ as an option.
It seemed to go away, but returned as soon as I moved focus to another cell.

Thank you for pointing out where the Name organizer is. Looking up ‘name cell’
calls up a lot of the naming functions in help, but does not make reference
anywhere to single cells. I suppose this is my error for not interpreting
‘selected areas’ to include just one cell. To me, this made it look as if Insert
> Names only applied to ranges, not individual cells. In fact, the Names >
Create box does not take into account the naming of a single cell. Now that I
know different it makes sense.

grabbing. fixed in cloph12 by restructuring the makefile targets/cleaning up
readlicense_oo

Additional changes:
* removed duplication of license sources (were available twice for unx and wnt)
* removed the conv.pl that was used to convert lineends and bypassed the
makefile (replaced by one-liner in makefile)
* removed obsolete cinema-image (which still showed the crossed-out 1.1 version
number)

now running "build" again after the module has already been made will not redo
everything
building for multiple languages will only run sed once on the xsl instead of
running it for every locale, MKDIRHIER only called once as well
unnecessary step of building the readmes and then copy the readmes to the
destination has been removed (now files are created in the target location
directly)

Whenever cells are highlighted and you try to highlight others beyond the edge.
If you go to the left there isn’t much problem since you are usually near the
front of the spreadsheet anyway. When you pull back from going left the
spreadsheet highlighting-scrolling effect reverses direction, but goes too fast
to stop it in time, so you have to try to reverse direction again. The problem
is that when it is going right and has picked up enough speed it won’t stop. The
program then hangs until it does, which usually happens at AutoRecovery. Since
AutoRecovery takes precedence over anything else, this breaks the runaway
scrolling. I realize some people like the scrolling to go fast, but it would be
nice if you could stop it by hitting the Escape key.

I have set this issue to new. But the solution, that is will be added to the
heap of enhancement request might perhaps not satisfy you. Therefore I encourage
you to have a look at the User Experience project http://ux.openoffice.org/, and

Format Paintbrush fail copying style of a chunk of string (version 000300m9).

If you copy only a style of one word, when you apply style all word in the same
line are reset to Times New Roman.

Example:

1. Write a string: Hello World (Font Calibri: All, Font Calibri and Bold:
World).
2. Write a string: Hello World 2 (Font Thaoma: All)
3. Select word "World" from first string with tool Format Paintbrush
3. Paste Style on word "World 2" on second string. The result is that Font
Calibri and Bold is applied on World but the other words of string are reset to
Times New Roman.

There are two problems. One is the conversion between binary and decimal, the
other is subtracting nearby numbers. If the application works with the same
accuracy of floating point numbers for input and output, then there is no way to
solve it.

If you need guaranteed accuracy to a specific amount of decimal places, you
should not use a spreadsheet.

It is the normal way spreadsheet applications handle decimal values. If you cut
the decimal places with INT, you cannot expect to get a accurate result. If you
want to have a result which is accurate to 2 decimal places, you have to use
=ROUND(B2-A2;2).

Thanks for your response, Regina.
My request was for a general method for changing program defaults for the
spreadsheet.
I now realise that templates do adresse much of the problem (thanks to your
information), but as you mention, not all.

So effectively this gives a third option for solution :
3) Make all default options not currently settable in templates settable in
templates.
(To provide a solution with a default template.)

My given suggestions and examples are just that.
The problem of a general method for changing program defaults remains.

True, it MAY require a lot of work, but I suspect a lot less than it might seem
at first.

After all, these defaults must be initialised either
1) when a new document is created
or
2) when an existing document is loaded

Certain defaults, such as the default column width, are currently always
initialised the same.

This all can be rationalised -- and I suspect without a great degree of
difficulty (for a programmer familiar with the internals of Openoffice, of
course).

So I respectfully resubmit this issue for reconsideration.

Note : I'm changing the title from "unable to change program defaults" to "need
general method to change all program defaults" in order to clarify the issue.

Apply a paragraph style which places spacing above the paragraph (like the
“Heading 1″ style for example) to the first line of text on the page. Even
though it is the first line of text on the page, OO.org Writer still applies the
spacing above the paragraph. This adds unnecessary space to the already existing
page margings, which will look strange. It will also look inconsistent because
the spacing won’t present on the next page if a paragraph continues there on the
first line, for example. Your only option is to remove the spacing above the
paragraph from the style, but that means you will have to use the Enter key
which is supposed to start a new paragraph to create spacing manually. This is
not good, so I searched for an explanation as to why it’s not OO.org’s default
behaviour to ignore the spacing above the paragraph if the style using it is
applied to the first line of the page.

Apparently this illogical behavior of OO.org can be disabled by disabling the
option “Add paragraph and table spacing at tops of pages (in current document)”.
You can navigate to this option through the menu options “Tools” → “Options…” →
“OpenOffice.org Writer” → “Compatibility”. According to this page –
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOoAuthors_User_Manual/Writer_Guide/Choosing_options_for_Writer#Compatibility_options_for_Writer
– on the OpenOffice.org Wiki this option is enabled (by default I assume, at
least it was in my case) specifically to ensure compatibility with Microsoft
Word.

While it is a good thing that OO.org tries to be compatible, it's not good if
I’m only using OO.org without importing Word documents. In that case this option
is quite obviously working against me. On top of that, it was very difficult to
figure out how to disable this behavior. The question is, can’t the option be
disabled by default, and temporarily enabled on-the-fly when a MS Word document
is opened?

The problem manifests like this:

I have Gentoo on AMD 64, so it is virtually rediculous not to build everything
to take advantage of 64 bit (Gentoo does have a binary version, but binary
versions are very unreliable in general -- they just never match the local
system). This makes a BIG difference in performance and reliability my
platform. Anyway, OpenOffice 3.0, during building, reveals quite a bug in
OpenOffice's source building process:

transogl-pixmap-to-texture.diff: testing...( patch -l -p0 -d

File to patch:

Comparing my build process log to logs of others whose build processes succeeded
allowed me to refine my bug manifestation.

Looking at the directory in question at the time of the bug failure, there is no
OGLTrans_TransitionerImpl.cxx.orig, but there certainly is an
OGLTrans_TransitionerImpl.cxx.~1~. From the "patch" manual page, it is apparent
that openoffice is failing to control its own environment.

A genuine fix for this bug would be for openoffice to stop patching its own
patch backup output. However, a workaround for now would be for openoffice to
specify the version control for patch to be using outright. A workaround in
that manner that works for the current assumptions is:

PATCH_VERSION_CONTROL=simple
SIMPLE_BACKUP_PREFIX=.orig
export PATCH_VERSION_CONTROL SIMPLE_BACKUP_PREFIX

A shorthand in my particular situation in my particular build system in Gentoo
ended up being (very implementation dependent, and not general in any way):

VERSION_CONTROL= paludis -i openoffice

Of course, that only works because PATCH_VERSION_CONTROL was not set in my
situation, and VERSION_CONTROL was (and has been since 1995). If it were, then
that shorthand would not have worked; "PATCH_VERSION_CONTROL=simple
SIMPLE_BACKUP_PREFIX=.orig paludis -i openoffice" would have been the shorthand
workaround in that case. Anyway, if you fix this problem one way or the other
(using a genuine fix, or by controlling the assumed behavoir of "patch"
specifically), then those shorthands would be irrelevent.

While comparing numbers with COUNTIF, I found values that didn't match, even
though they should have. Subsequent testing showed rounding errors in the
subtraction. (I have a small spreadsheet demonstrating it, but I don't see a
method of attaching it, so:)

Columns A to E: Format / Cells / Number / Decimal Places 2.

Cell C1 function =B1-A1
Cell D1 function =int((B1-A1)*10)/10
Cell E1 function =int((B1-A1)*100)/100
Cell F1 function =if(C1=E1;"";"Bad")

Copy C1:F1 to C2:F5

Type in the following values for A1:A5 <-- 0 / 60 / 360 / 125 / 126
Type in the following values for B1:B5 <-- 2.2 / 62.2 / 362.2 / 127.2 / 128.2

Note that this is NOT specific to 0.2; (for 360) it happens with any decimal
values other than 0 or 5. (Implication to me is that it's a binary rounding
problem.)

Checking through your issues list, I think this is probably a duplicate of
your Issue 69749, which in turn has had several other issues folded into it.
If so, then this problem has been outstanding since at least 2003 (earliest
one you've folded into 69749). That's 5 years.

In my opinion, this is NOT a Priority 3 problem, it's a Priority 1 problem.
Basic arithmetic is *important* for a spreadsheet.

This is a must have. Check out the OO Community Forum and do a search for file
association - this is a very big issue with the users.

If it worked the way it used to in 2.4.x where it asks if it should make the
file associations during the file installation that would be great.

If it could also have an option to repair those associations if they get poached
by some other app, that would be even better.

Queries seem to give the wrong answer when an alias name clashes with a field
name (which is itself aliased).

In the query

SELECT "MainTable"."Id", "Rooms"."Collation" AS "LCollation",
"Rooms_1"."Collation" AS "Collation" FROM "Rooms" AS "Rooms", "MainTable" AS
"MainTable", "Rooms" AS "Rooms_1" WHERE "Rooms"."ID" = "MainTable"."List
location" AND "MainTable"."Location" = "Rooms_1"."ID" ORDER BY "Collation" ASC

it sorts by "Rooms"."Collation" and not "Rooms_1"."Collation" as required.

Renaming the alias for "Rooms_1"."Collation" to "CollationA" solves the problem.

This is an acceptable workaround, but as I understand it, the original query
should sort as required. Or OO should give a warning at least.

I'm attaching a database to show the problem.

This might be tied up with issue 50175.
