I did a quick test with a line chart with 2.4.1 Multilingual version German UI
WIN XP: [680m17(Build9310)] and can confirm that hiding columns has no effect
to the shown lines in the chart, but I doubt that it should have. No Idea what
reporter is talking about here.

@sarotti:
please read our guidelines on
http://qa.openoffice.org/issue_handling/pre_submission.html and
http://www.openoffice.org/bugs/bug_writing_guidelines.html, then
contribute a clear step by step instruction containing all observations (error
messages ...), _every_key_press_and_every_mouse_click_ how to reproduce the
problem, and explain why you believe that your results are unexpected.
That means (for example):
do not write something like „I am not able to ...“, but
„6. left mouse click on …
 expected: …, color of … changes, …
actual: no …., color remains white, no …

The purpose of the check box use user data is that *no* user data at all is
stored, so also no author. This is an important privacy support feature. Using
it in the way as you suggested will make the code more complicated and - in the
long run - error prone. As a bug in this function can have very unfortunate
consequences for the users I really don't want to change it.

But we can add a listbox to the dialog allowing to select between several
profiles (identified by the author property). This will come very close to
your suggestion.

I have encountered a problem when printing a odp file from impress. I believe
this is a bug.
The print option grayscale do not works as it should be.

1. open the attachments
2. choose menu file --print--option and make sure grayscale is checked.
Then press OK button to quit the dialog.
3. Press OK again to print.

I have tested the procedure using pdf-factory and pdf-Redirect (pdf printer).

When I open a big file in OpenOffice.org 3.1 Impress, it hangs/crashes.
The file I'm using has got a size of 257 MB and 202 slides. Each slide contains
an imported image of approximately 1.5 MB.
The issue occures on Linux as well as on Windows. That is my hardware:
* AMD Athlon 64 LE-1640 2.6 GHz
* 2 GB RAM
* 256 MB shared memory graphic

step-by-step:
1. I opened the file by a double-click
2. OpenOffice started loading the file after the progress bar on the bottom
finished
3. After a while I couldn't move the cursor anymore and I had to reboot the
computer

In versions less than 3.1 everything works well.

There is an annoyance in writer that I would like to address. To illustrate what
I mean I created a video that you can download here:

http://www.informatik.uni-freiburg.de/~schmidma/openoffice-bug.avi

The issue is (and this happens both on Ubuntu 8.10 and Windows Vista, Openoffice
3.1) the following:
When I had my focus on a frame, then want to move to a different part of the
document using mouse wheel, the view jumps back to the frame after one page
scrolling. Then its fine and I can navigate however I want. If I wait for a
second, it does not jump back.

I noticed that the tool boxes have to change (from frame editing to normal
editing) and this seems to create the delay. And when the toolbox change
finished it just grabs control and goes back.

I want to add here that there are variations of this, leading to confusion and
feeling that openoffice is very sloppy. I feel this is a major annoyance.

You took the words right out of my mouth!

I *did* create a new issue, ( issue 101973 ), and it was quickly marked as a
duplicate and closed! :) THIS issue (59506) was probably re-opened when it
was realized that just changing the default created more problems than it
supposedly fixed.

Should I create yet another? Should Issue 101973 be re-opened?

When giving a presentation it is sometimes necessary to go quickly to a specific
slide to answer a question for instance.
Currently Impress allows only to go to a specific slide by page number
(right-click). It is usually not convenient since we don't know the slide
number.
A very nice feature is present in the presentation program Impressive
http://impressive.sourceforge.net/ and is called Overview screen.
The idea is to hit the Tab key and have a presentation of all the slides on 1
screen (as in the OOo sorter view). You can thus quickly select a specific slide
by clicking it.
I think that such a feature could greatly enhance Impress.

Thanks a lot for your work on this nice program.

(note, locale is it_IT)

according to the guide, this formula should work:

 =CELLA(contents;INDIRIZZO(1;2*(RIF.RIGA()-1);1;1;Foglio1))

ie in EN

 =CELL(contents;ADDRESS(1;2*(RIF.ROW()-1);1;1;Sheet1))

as it does work in INDIRETTO() (EN: INDIRECT() ):

 =INDIRETTO(INDIRIZZO(1;2*(RIF.RIGA()-1);1;1;Foglio1))

as both function expect a cell ref as text; eg if the above ADDRESS() returns
Sheet1.$B$3 then INDIRECT(ADDRESS(...)) will work like manually writing in
the cell ref, ie INDIRECT(Sheet1.$B$3), whereas CELL(..., ADDRESS(...)) yields
an error #REF! and CELL(..., Sheet1.$B$1) does work.

Looking at the docs and function tips I don't see any error in function
usage, thus it looks like a bug in CELL().

I was using 2.4 in Linux, thought it's a bug fixed in 3.x then checked latest
3.1 in XP but with same results.

thx

[sw-issues] [Issue 102376] OpenOffice crashes on Doc ument Save

I thought I was fairly clear that the document is crashing when I save it (I
did not say 'damaged
document causes problems') but here you go:

Step by step instructions.
1. Make any change inside the document
Expected: the change to happen
Result: the change happens
2. Either hit Cmd-S to save or left click the Save icon in the toolbar or left
click on File and go to Save
Expected: the document to save
Result: OpenOffice crashes sometimes, prompting me to recover my documents.

Why do I believe the result is unexpected? Should I *expect* OpenOffice to
crash when saving a file?
I'm starting to wonder these days.

More information concerning the document? It's a 64 page workbook document
utilizing many pictures
in png, tiff, and jpeg format that makes heavy use of paragraph and heading
styles. I'm clicking save
from a standard toolbar and standard File menu and the standard command of
Cmd+S. The file is on a
Macintosh, and I'm saving the file to a network drive running Windows Server.
The problem also exists
when saving from OpenOffice on Vista.

the help page for CELLA() [CELL()] says that usage of EN terms is mandatory - eg
you have to say contents not contenuto - yet the table of string values
lists
terms in *IT*, therefore one needs to 'guess' the right original EN terms to
use.
Such help table should list the EN terms, consistently with the above statement.

I saved some of my documents into doc format today to share them with others.
When trying to open them with OpenOffice again, to check if everything ok, all
content was missing. After several tests I realized, that only tables in the
document (and their content) are lost, and after some other time, that saving
back into odt-format brings back the content. So I created a minimal document
and discovered the problem:
all tables with negative left positioning values (context menu -- Table... --
spacing left) are invisible in doc-format.

This problem exists at minimum since OOO310m11 and also exists in OOo 3.1. Also
it is the same problem on Windows and on Linux.

O.K. ..I try to explain it once again (and I sent before a pdf file to show you
what I mean)

- the data in a spreadsheet of calc: columns A to F
- create a line chart with this data column A:F
- In the chart you´ll see 6 lines (A to F) based on the columns
- hide column E and F
- normally the result was two lines are also hidden in the chart
- in version 3.1 (I used before2.0) there is no effect on the chart - the lines
of the hidden column E and F are still shown in the chart

...hope you can reproduce now my problem

Which version exactly do not show the hidden columns? In OOo2.4.2 and DEV300m48
they are shown.

But I think, that there is no need for doing anything here, because the behavior
will be made configurable, see issue 91578. So I like to set the issue as
duplicate of issue 91758. Objections?

In Writer, after Help-OpenOffice.org Help, under the index term non-breaking
dashes, it says you insert a non-breaking dash by typing shift+ctrl+minus sign.
It should say shift+command+minus sign (at least on the Mac).

[sw-issues] [Issue 39381] auto correction has unprac tical defaults for the german language

I would also like to vote for the suggested change:

Please make the default setting of the autocorrect checkbox Start every
sentence with a capital letter OFF in the german language program version.

I always turn it off anyway, as do most other Germans I know.

It is far more nasty to have 20% of cases where OO definitly introduces a
spelling error where you didn't make one (e.g. with abbreviations like z.B.)
compared to the rare chance that OO really corrects an unintentionally typed
lower case letter at the beginning of a sentence (even assuming the full stop
period signs are in the majority with 80%)!

Open attached file.
Send both pictures to back. Notice the callouts.
Save the document and close it.
Open the document. Notice that the first picture is in front again.

I have tested it with DEV300m48 on WinXP. I find no reason for that behavior.

@kenpardue: It is impolite to provide a 36MB document. You should have reduced
it to those pictures, which show the error.

This is how to reproduce the behavior:

- Create a new document in OO Writer (observed in Version 3.1)
- type some text, e.g. this is meaningless
- change the backgground color of this text using the Format -Character
dialog
- Close OO Writer without saving the new document
- Open OO Writer again, creating a second new document
- type some text, e.g. this is french
- mark the whole text with your mouse
- go to the menu Extras - Language - Selection - More...
- now the wrong tab of the Format Character dialog box pops up: Background
Color, instead of the intended Font tab with the language setting on it !

This behavior also happens with the menu entry Extras - Language - Paragraph
- More

It is necessary to use this specific menu item, since not all installed
dictionary languages are displayed in the Extras - Language - Selection -
list.

This behavior nearly drove me crazy, because I could not find the intended
language setting option on the initially displayd dialog tab.

When I understood the priority definitions right, this bug is P2 because it
involves a misbehavior of a frequently used menu item. (I don't know any other
way to change the language of some words.) Furthermore it can probably be easily
fixed, just call the correct dialog box tab whith this menu entry.

If I use SUMIF function who refers to cells of others files, I get an Err:504
error. If I use 3.0.1 everything is OK.

Example:
File a.ods has names in A1:A10 and values in B1:B10
In file b.ods I type a name in A1 and then in B1 (using left-click for links)
=SUMIF('file:///C:/a.ods'#$Sheet1.A1:A10;A1;'file:///C:/a.ods'#$Sheet1.B1:B10)

I get Err:504
It works fine with previous release

As has been generally requested I've tried this filter with several WordPro
document, some short and simple other long and complex. It's loaded the text,
headers, footers correctly. The bullets and fonts are sometine different but
OK. No formulas or images are included although their approx placement is shown.

The first time I used it - it crashed but this hasn't proved repeatable.

You know, that the second parameter of CELL must be a reference, but ADDRESS
 returns a text?

indeed - ack.
Well, terms used in function wizard and help are the same (Riferimento =
Reference), rather confusiong IMHO.
Re-checking, eventually maybe I got it right: (in a cell)
  =INDIRECT(ADDRESS(...))
is equivalent to
  =CELL(contents; INDIRECT(ADDRESS(...)))
the point is, that help/wizard say that INDIRECT() returns the *contents* of
the cell, whereas it actually returns the *reference* to the cell.

So the bug seems to be poor/bad wording in docs - to my understanding, of
course.
I suggest to make it clearer in the f.wizard, with labels like
  Reference:
and
  Reference (as text):
in due cases.

thx
(test .odf seems unneeded at this point, though I'm attaching it anyway)

IMHO it was wrong to mark issue 101973 as duplicate. Issue 59506 explicitly asks
for making Collate the default and that is implemented. Issue 101973 is
clearly recognizable a follow-up issue. I don't want to look bureaucratic, but
IMHO we should close this issue and reopen 101973. Just to make it easier to see
what needs to be done. Reading this issue here will be more confusing than
helpful.

done as directed (subject, reassign).

BTW, arg1 list in OOo2.4 (IT) was right, ie it reported EN terms. They're
localized in 3.x.

Got the same kind of problem:
If a word document with checkboxes is open, changed and saved as in word
format using OOo Writer 2.4.2, the new word document can be read correctly via
writer (whathever the version).
But when I use OOo 3.0 or 3.1 and do the same (open, change and save as in
word format), the checked boxes are back to neutral when I read the new word
document with OOo writer.

For frenchunderstanding people, here's a report of this problem on

@camillem - Tried to reproduce the problem under XP / OO.o 3.1.
Yes the report included in the odb file does render with the chart to the left.
However, if you move the text control above and to the right of it just a
little
bit left and or up then the chart stays put.

Not sure there is a bug here.

Used the following query for testing:
SELECT * FROM ville_total_vendeur AS ville_total_vendeur WHERE total
BETWEEN :Low AND :high

Using Xp/ (Novell 3.0.1 [just what was on my machine at the moment] - no
prompt, no error display, NO DATA...)

However using XP/ (Sun OO.o 3.1) and (Sun Dev3.2_m49) - works as expected.
Just to be sure also tried
SELECT Table1.*, Table1.d1 FROM Table1 AS Table1 WHERE d1 BETWEEN
:beg_date AND :end_date
Where d1 is a date field again using 3.1 and Dev3.2 works as expected.

Adding updated info from followup on issue 59506 here...

Some people will want collate on as the default... just for convenience. Many
people have asked for it, and unfortunately it was given to them in OO 3.0
without any real regard to the consequences. Many people will have severe
problems with the default being on, and our business is one of them (as I
explained in a previous comment, above).

There might be some type of different options under other OS's (MSWin/MacOS),
but under Linux it is very problematic using the collate function on.

The suggestion about storing the collate setting per printer is probably not
practical, since there is no user interface in OO that addresses saved options
on a per-printer basis (unless they want to resurrect the spadmin tool, which is
now pretty much dead). Storing such a setting in a document doesn't really make
any sense.

So the only best remaining way to handle the problem is to make an option in
tools-printing that can hold a user's preference for collation:

1) Remember previously used state (begin with setting off)
2) Always default to off
3) Always default to on
4) Always remain off (and don't show option in print dialog)

With the default setting for new installations set to #1 (since that is most
logical).

The above change would solve the problem for most people once and for all.
Although there should also be a way that a system administrator can set the
default for new users, to make the problem absolutely solvable on systems where
printers do their own collation all the time (which is most modern laser
printers and copiers).

Perhaps it will be left open and people monitoring THIS issue should go over
there. At this point, I just don't care where it is, as long as people know
there is a problem that needs to be solved.

@er:

Please check again. The edit format _does_ follow the
locale setting, it just does not follow a modified LC_TIME
or Windows' Regional Setting's date mask, for example.

This sounds like a bug in and of itself -- for aren't LC_TIME and date mask
settings part of the locale settings?

Also, there are ways to override the locale:

But the locale settings presented in either of the two OOo dialogs mentioned do
not have any ISO listing, nor is there any way of finding the ideal combination
of number, currency, and date formats aside from extensive trial and error.
This is both tedious and onerously inefficient.

And no, one does not always want to edit the date in the
same format it is displayed, the ISO 8601 format is an
exceptional case where that indeed is wanted.

Yet, setting up the default editing behaviour to use a separate unexplained
format from the display format is both poor usability and an invitation to
error. I would argue that the expected behaviour at least 90% of the time is
for the editing and display format to match. Allowing an *option* for editing
and display formats to be separate would be welcome. The current configuration
is confusing and completely unacceptable.

There is a reason other spreadsheet programs do not work this way.
