It was not tested using OOo (m49 selected to be able to post issue), but, considering that MS Office allows for collaborative editing for quite some time, and is pretty advanced in this field, I do not expect that OOo fares better than the competition. SETTING Multiple users from different regions editing collaboratively a spreadsheet over the web. PROBLEM While editing collaboratively a spreadsheet over a local network works acceptable, when the users are dispersed over a wider region and use connections over the web/internet to access the spreadsheet, any work becomes a nightmare. It takes long even with MS Office 2007 to open a decent sized spreadsheet, it takes long to save the changes, but most notably, it becomes really frustrating, when you are unable to save the changes, because the spreadsheet is locked by someone else. You can't just run across the office and ask the person to close the spreadsheet for a couple of minutes until you saved the changes. COMMENT Considering the global nature of commercial businesses, this is an area that would give the edge over the competition. SOLUTIONS The whole collaborative spreadsheet editing should be rethought. A couple of issues need to be solved: 1. Aggressive locking and de-locking Once a user opens, or performs a change to the spreadsheet, it should post a lock-request. Once it receives the lock, it should rapidly save the changes. Once the changes are saved, it should immediately release the lock. This way, every user is able to save the changes without substantial waiting times. 2. Implement rsid's Recent posts describe the usefulness of rsid's. [see http://gsoc-tzvetelina.blogspot.com/] This feature would allow much better merging capabilities for collaboratively edited spreadsheets. This spreadsheets are likely not as computing-intensive as standalone spreadsheets, so rsid's could be used in these settings without any performance penalty. 3. Implement merging capabilities One of the most disturbing things is managing a comflict: you either have to discard the other users work, or do it all over again. This should not happen. Implementing advanced merging capabilities and conflict resolutions should be implemented. Rsid's would offer additional benefits in these settings. 4. Temporary data-exchange Instead of saving the whole spreadsheet, implement a temporary data exchange container, something similar to the '.lock' file, e.g. a '.lock.data', where only sequential changes are stored. All users working in the spreadsheet will have their spreadsheet updated based on this data, so they always work on the latest version of the spreadsheet. CONCLUSION Collaboratively editing a spreadsheet poses new challenges in this globalised world. It is not uncommon to have offices spread over different countries and continents. Even two distinct regions will introduce various latencies in the network communication, so that classic collaborative editing becomes highly unresponsive. People from 4 countries over 3 continents are involved in a project I am assigned to. But even smaller projects, involving only 2 European countries showed the limitations of the existing collaborative editing model. The intention of this outline feature in the paragraph format is, to have a certain paragraph as member in the Table of contents (aka TOC) independently from the Headings or list levels in the document. And Writer selects a random style, e.g. when DejaVuSans-Extralight is available it likes to select DejaVu Sans, weight=WEIGHT_LIGHT, width=WIDTH_SEMI_CONDENSED. And this style of DejaVu Sans does not contain all the glyphs of their mainstream counterparts. So the best way to really fix it is for Writer+EditEngine+etc. to fix its handling of font styles. A less expensive solution would be to request the Regular style. A similar but not-as-good solution could be that the InsertSpecial dialog should ignore the styles Writer and the other apps request and just use Regular. I can see some problem reports that a workaround like this would result in: Why are you ignoring the font style! We explicitely requested it! ... The quickest workaround would be to deinstall the dejavu-experimental package on Linux. And there is of course the UI-question what is the best way to handle the situation when the faces of the same font family have a wildly different selection of unicode coverage. In short, people in Japan put given name in first when we talk and write in English (and probably other western languages). For example, in Japan, when someone asks us Who is the prime minister in your country? in English, then we say Taro Aso in the western order. Taro is his given name. Not only daily conversion but most newspapers follow this western convention as long as they write English articles including formal ones. However, when we are asked the same question in Japanese, of course, we always answer Aso Taro in the eastern order and all newspapers in Japanese also do so. That means people in Japan use the eastern order as long as we talk and write in our own language, but, on the other hand, we follow the western order for English conversations and articles. We swap our family names and given names according to the context of languages. Here is a good but very rough analysis about the comparison of diffrent conventions of Chinese and Japanese names in English context, which is the number of hit pages in Google.com (2009/7/9): * hu jintao (Eastern order) 2,240,000 * jintao hu (Western order) 25,200 * aso taro (Eastern order) 35,800 * taro aso (Western order) 805,000 It makes us clear that, while Japanese names often follow the western order in English context, Chinese names usually keep their eastern order even in English sentences. I think this difference caused different interpretations of the terms first name and last name between Japanese and Chinese and made us in discussion. As you said people in China would treat first name literally, but people in Japan usually don't do so. So please keep in mind that you can still choose another solution that you preserve the current solution of OOo 3.0/3.1 and re-translate first name in 姓 and last name in 名 everywhere in 3.2. I'm not sure this is a smart solution for Chinese people, but it's your option and just for your information. When using Calc to save a spreadsheet containing addresses as a DBASE file I got an I/O error. When I did File-New-Database from within Writer, to set up a MailMerge database connection, I got a crash with a warning to contact the software maintainers. Write should filter the certificate list for certificates that have the following criteria: a) digital signature Key usage b) non-repudiation key usage. Currently even encryption only certificates are display for signature (incorrectly). In addition, if the Enhanced Key Usage(EKU) is set to All Usages (OID = 2.5.29.37.0), the certificate is not display at all - or some other EKU, then even digital signature key usage certificates are NOT displayed - which they should be. I don't know if the users of the go-oo.o build prefer new features over product quality, I don't believe our users will do it. We have reported the bug to the go-oo.o guys at the OOoCon in Bejing last year, I hope that some day it will be fixed. I suppose that there may be issues with the patch/work provided by Florian, but at least he provided work (perhaps buggy?) that progressed beyond the standard OOo forms. I'm not a dev, but a user that sincerely wishes to see OOo installed in corporate and government sites, but that is unlikely to happen if this is not resolved (see: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=79720). Not to be confrontational, but have you ever used an OOo form based document on a daily basis in a corporate or government environment, or know of any that do?
