When we help a company to migrate to OOo, we have to teach them how to live with both OOo and MSO on the same machine. So using Open With... is a required skill. But it's stupid to have to teach them to select (scary) scalc.exe instead of OpenOffice.org Calc which is more obvious. We may not have to teach everyone about the OOo program name if they're displayed in the obvious way. So please fix this issue to ease OOo migration. It's too important to WONTFIX. In a table in writer, I would like the ability to test for blank spaces and suppress the zero which appears in a summary column. In an invoice form, I have the number of items, description, cost each and a column in which the number of items multiplied by cost is displayed. Most often, there are only one of two items, leaving several rows empty. As currently configured, writer will put a series of zeros in the last column, which is not visually appealing, especially if there are 12+ rows. I have tried to specify an IF function for the last column (IF(a12*a14=0; , a12*a14), but it does not work. Wordperfect provides an isblank function which does work with the if function in the word processor which accomplishes this. This is a roadblock to my giving up Wordperfect and cutting over to OpenOffice altogether. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. These columns needed to be sequentially color-coded, primarily, to signfy the data's logical categorizations. For such circumstances, it would be terribly wonderful if cells could be assigned dynamic color gradients. For example, one could assign a starting gradient RGB for Column A RGB, and an ending gradient RGB for Column B (or whatever columns you'd like). For rows, just the same: Row start RGB through Row end RGB. Calc would then dynamically ensure that the columns or rows in between the gradients were colored as specified. through Column B, or Row 1 RGB through Row 2 RGB). From a performance perspective, it would be economical for such a formatting to be a simple one-time process, rather than *maintaining* this dynamic gradient. So, e.g., if you add or remove a column or row after you already effected this gradient, the formatting (including color) inheritence would behave as normal, etc. Graphically, it certainly appears to me that the Format Cells Background tab certainly has a little extra realestate to develop. [sc-issues] [Issue 104430] Modularize Calc's express ion evaluator to support alternate arithmetics
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=104430 Issue #|104430 Summary|Modularize Calc's expression evaluator to support alte |rnate arithmetics Component|Spreadsheet Version|OOO310m15 Platform|All URL|http://speleotrove.com/decimal/ OS/Version|All Status|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard| Keywords| Resolution| Issue type|ENHANCEMENT Priority|P3 Subcomponent|programming Assigned to|spreadsheet Reported by|jeffrey_s --- Additional comments from jeffre...@openoffice.org Sat Aug 22 16:35:13 + 2009 --- Please consider modularizing Calc's expression evaluator and documenting the resulting interface. It would be desirable to move away from binary floating point arithmetic for spreadsheet calculations for the reasons mentioned in http://speleotrove.com/decimal/. (It would also be nice to be able to adjust the precision with which calculations are done, and implement alternate semantics such as interval arithmetic, but I digress.) This is, of course, practicably impossible, given the conflicting goals of maintaining approximate compatibility with older spreadsheet versions, various macro programming APIs, plug-ins, and an infamous spreadsheet from a Redmond, Washington company. However, if we modularize things, we can replace the expression evaluator to enable new semantics later on. Right now, all of the spreadsheet values are passed back and forth internally as IEEE 754 double precision binary floats. Cosmetic rounding to suppress binary floating point artifacts is performed after addition and subtraction (maybe others) by flushing answers close to zero to zero. This is not documented anywhere that I have found. (It's probably a better policy than the one cooked up in Redmond. Refer to some of William Kahan's papers on the topic.) However, it still creates a chasm between zero and the nearest nonzero numbers. (For reasons why this is bad, refer to the discussions surrounding the denormalized values in IEEE 754, especially with the new revision. Flush-to-zero is wonderful if you're just doing graphics for a game, but deadly if the numbers actually mean something. This isn't quite the same issue, but it has the same effect.) There is a check-box in Options to have the string value of the spreadsheet cell reparsed for use as an input to calculations that refer to it instead of using a cached binary floating point value, which sort of addresses this issue, but (1) it will always suffer from double rounding, which makes it break some corner cases when doing modular arithmetic and (2) it can't do any better than double precision binary floating point, and (3) it gets in the way of formatting a spreadsheet to carry all the decimal places when you're trying to simulate that kind of thing. If the expression evaluator could be moved to a .DLL/.so, and the API generalized to pass a string or general-purpose data structure (instead of just a binary double-precision float) (and documented thus), then it could be replaced in a separate project with a tool that would provide expression evaluation using decimal semantics, rational semantics, or otherwise modified semantics. In order to actually make this doable in polynomial time, I suggest replacing the internal representation of the double-precision cell contents value with a string that will initially just hex-encode (or maybe octal would be faster) the IEEE 754 double bitfields (and treat them as opaque outside the expression evaluator). Make all the conversions to and from and all calculations the responsibility of the expression evaluator .DLL/.so, so that everything else outside the expression evaluator .DLL/.so treats the encoded float as opaque. All of the standard spreadsheet formulas would be the responsibility of the expression evaluator (as they depend on the format of the floating point numbers used). With the expression evaluation mechanism parameterized out of the rest of the spreadsheet module, it would be possible to create alternate expression evaluators that did not depend of having everything reduced to a common binary floating point representation, which would in turn permit representations that carry more precision or follow different rounding semantics. Ultimately, we're going to have to move spreadsheets away from binary floating point, and this will be true of all spreadsheets, not just OpenOffice. People expect their calculators to follow the rules that they learned in school, and that's why calculator universally use decimal representation internally. They also expect spreadsheets to follow the rules, but for performance reasons about 20 years ago, we needed to use binary floating

These columns needed to be sequentially color-coded, primarily, to signfy the data's logical categorizations. Since I didn't want to be bothered with the added consideration (and readability enhindrances) of varying font color by darkness, our spreadsheet is using numerous ranges of softer colors that allow for easy reading with a default black-colored font. For such a quantity of soft-colored, categorized columns, the rather scant default swatch must be ammended (in Options OpenOffice.Org Colors) with at least several dozen new colors, and they must be sequential in some way, rather than a hodge-podge of random colors butting next to each other. The much-appreciated left-hand 8x8 gradient was used to help manually select these colors by ascending brightness. Here are my suggested enhancements: (1) Problem: The current 8x8 gradient that is provided in the Color window becomes very bothersome in the fact that it wants to constantly choose a default color gradient every time its window is opened (via Edit... button). Therefore, the color gradient, in order to ensure consistency in my spreadsheet's coloring scheme, had to be manually re-defined every time. Solution: Can't we have this gradient simply remember its previous settings? (2) As it currently is, the UI methodology for altering this color table is unintuitive, at best. (a) The user should not be able to alter color information (i.e. Name, RGB) directly, but would have a separate window that does the jobs of both editing and creating new colors. See (b) for this. Instead, this table, therefore, will allow the user to re-arrange (move) colors, select individual colors (for editing), or select multiple colors (for deletion or moving) using SHIFT and/or CTRL for selection. Drag and drop for this table would be nice too. (b) The color selection window that opens from the Edit... button should be expanded to include an input field for the color's Name, as well as the Old Color box and the New Color box (or Current and Pending?). (c) The current OK button in the expanded window from (b) should be replaced with two buttons: Apply Changes, which saves changes (made to a pre-existing color only), and Add Color (d) The current Modify button should be removed completely. Its functionality (as an 'apply change now' button) would be replaced with the expanded window's Apply Changes button from (b). Modify and Edit are synonyms in English, and should not appear in the same window. (e) The Old Color or box should be moved from the Options window into the expanded Color window proposed in (b). It should also be labelled to reduce ambiguity. (f) An Add Color... button would take the user to the same expanded Edit... window as in (b), but with no color Name or color information pre-populated. As described in (b), the user would then enter information and select the Add Color button when finished. (g) The humbly-named, expanded Color window from (b) should be retitled Add/Edit Color for less ambiguous reference in the future. (h) Possibly, the left-hand (and currently 8x8) gradient could have two small fields (both with default 8) that control from how many units this gradient is composed. Someone, somewhere might want this, and it seems simple enough. (3) Perhaps an import from file button should be added. X11 users, e.g., might want to import their standard list of colors. Let's not get really granular about the import file format -- the user might have to do some reformatting to their text file, but it would be far easier than entering a hundred colors manually. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=90759 --- Additional comments from drk...@openoffice.org Sat Aug 22 21:27:20 + 2009 --- Hi Regina I think you mean 'z-score' rather than 'z-core'. For your short form version, we really should make clear that this is a sample, not the entire population. There's a real problem understanding the function, because Excel has described it incorrectly, and it also doesn't work as you might expect. So my inclination is to use more words, rather than try to be succinct. I do find the diagrams helpful for this, to highlight the difference between one-sided and one/two-tailed. I'd suggest that it's helpful to be very clear that this is not a one- or two-sided test - although I'd also be happy if we simutaneously avoided the 'one-sided' label. So it's not a general error, not justifying a P1. This sounds more like a misconfiguration, an error in the installation. I'd advice you to look for support on the us...@openoffice.org mailing list. Try to: - delete your user profile - uninstall/re-install OOo - try to see if this only happens with 1 particular document or with all documents in Writer. If this only happens with 1 document and the re-installation didn't cure the problem, feel free to reopen this issue and attach the document to it. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [framework-issues] [Issue 104405] terribly slow on loading .ods file when shared network printer is off

I also noticed this on Linux. I have no printers, but OOo looked for them on the network. I had a very restrictive firewall on my machine, which dropped these probing packets. OOo was waiting for ages because it had no responses. Finally it timed out and opened the requested files. Changing the firewall rules from DROP to REJECT for these specific ports fixed this. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sc-issues] [Issue 90759] ZTEST not same as Excel
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=90759 --- Additional comments from reg...@openoffice.org Sat Aug 22 22:33:36 + 2009 --- I think you mean 'z-score' rather than 'z-core'. Yes. I do find the diagrams helpful for this, to highlight the difference between one-sided and one/two-tailed. The diagrams in the Wiki are indeed very useful, but the function description cannot contain pictures. And the proposed 'one sided' is not exact enough, because it does not say whether P(Zz) or P(Zz) is returned. This issue is about wrong calculation. That is fixed and therefore the issue is closed. But the current help Returns the two-tailed P value of a z test with standard distribution. is wrong. We need a description, that is right in content and short enough to be shown in the function wizard. Can you make a suggestion in a new issue? It should not exceed two lines (see IPMT for a description which is too long). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
