The toolbar buttons will only merge new items with an existing list under certain circumstances, and this is not one of them. The newly-numbered item goes into its own list, giving the unexpected numbering. Select your two numbered items and apply the "Numbering 1" style from the Styles and Formatting window. Now apply the same style to the text paragraph above them. In this case, all paragraphs that have the same numbering style will belong to the same list, and the new item will merge with the list items underneath, giving the result you expected. The program crashed when I was editing the spreadsheet, and the file has evidently become corrupted after being recovered. Now, when I've tried to open it with either OOo 3.1.0 or 3.1.1, and navigate to a particular sheet within the file, the program hangs with a spinning cursor. Further attempts to open the file result in the usual recovery dialog, followed by a hang if/when I try to navigate to that same sheet. Also, attempts to import that particular sheet into another spreadsheet file result in a hang. The other sheets in that recovered spreadsheet file can be viewed or imported just fine. I would be happy to provide you with a copy of the spreadsheet file, but this bug reporter doesn't seem to have an "attach" facility. Oops! Ok, I'm an idiot. I just realized: If these are _operators_ then "A1~B1"
is an _expression_ and INDIRECT doesn't accept expressions.
So, instead of
=SUM(INDIRECT("A1~B1")), I need to write
=SUM(INDIRECT("A1")~INDIRECT("B1")), which does work.
I don't know what Excel does with these, and the ODFF draft says that INDIRECT
only accepts text references, but if ":" and "~" are operators, then "A1:B1"
looks as much like an expression as "A1~B1". It seems like a natural extension
or enhancement for INDIRECT to be able to accept reference expressions, in
addition to 'plain' references, since it is possible to return a reference for
both cases.
Anyway, never mind; closing as INVALID.

When I open a MS Office 2000 and the field reports err:502
The field in question is:

If I change the TRUE() to TRUE it works fine. I've tried this in a few
documents and same result. MS Office 2000 and 2003 both save the boolean as
TRUE() and open office can't read it.

Setup: OpenOffice started in headless mode and used as a server accessed from a java app (using either a socket or a pipe connection). In our context the java app asks OpenOffice to open a given odt file and perform an update (the equivalent to menu Tools>Update>Update All). Issue: OpenOffice leaks substatial amounts of memory each time an ODT file is processed. Processing the same small 3 page odt (83Kb) including 3 images leaked around 25MB per test. After 100 iterations the resident memory of the soffice process was around 1400MB and OpenOffice finally crashed. Processing a 187 page odt (9.8Mb) including 229 images leaked around 75MB per test. When OpenOffice is started without the -headless option but with a xvfb server as a X11 substitute, the soffice process does not leak any memory using the same odt files. The soffice process generally evens out at around 190MB of resident memory. Using xvfb on a headless OpenOffice server would seem like a acceptable work-around but OpenOffice crashes while updating large ODTs. I have been using MoMa from time to time to evaluate whether the software should run under Mono. My understanding is that in principle it should. I consulted our Linux port team and they said that many open sourced software packages are distributed as ZIP files for Linux. He also said it is common to include a script to create a menu item and a desktop short cut. I haven't done the script yet but have posted a zip file at the web site. (I haven't included a file with instructions on how to download Mono or what folder I recommend for installation.) In short, I have posted the executable but haven't had the chance to do any testing yet. Eventually we will be able to get all the pieces pulled together. So that is now 3 drivers that we have seen the problem with on Solaris (StarSQL, IBM DB2 ODBC driver, & MySQL). I suppose there could be a problem with unixODBC on solaris, but it's curious that it used to work fine with OO 2.2 on Solaris, and the same source code (for unixODBC & StarSQL) has no problem on Linux. Our engineer who looked at some ODBC traces said the following: ODBCTest showed it returning correct values for SQL_DESC_CONCISE_TYPE, so I don't know why OO also asks for another attribute on solaris only... David says: what is the extra attribute that it is asking for? Erik says: SQL_DESC_TYPE Erik says: But then later, I can also see if choosing to get the ID column to an SQL_C_CHAR variable on solaris, and to an SQL_C_SHORT variable on Linux. New incorrect uses of the context classloader comparable to that in JEditorPane() will spring up as fast as they are fixed in other places. There are many 3rd party Java libraries. How could we ever verify them all? I am a very experienced Java developer and I freely admit that I have only a basic understanding of classloaders. And I do think I am very representative of Java developers in this regard. It is irrelevant if developers should care more about classloaders and should take more time to study all of their intricacies. They don't. And this won't change. Classloaders are and will forever remain one of the obscure aspects of Java that developers only care about when things break. It is telling that it is a part of Swing's core code that has brought this issue to life. If even Sun's developers can't get context classloader use right, what do you expect? So I believe that the only safe choice (and IMHO only a safe choice is acceptable in an important application such as OOo) is to keep the current AttachGuard as the general case and only add the optimization where it is known to be safe. I created a document in Writer with two short lines of Times New Roman text. I then selected one line of text and chose Format > Character > Position and I set SCALE WIDTH to 150%. I ticked PAIR KERNING. I then exported the file to a PDF using the PDF icon on the toolbar. Result The scaled text is not scaled and appears to have stayed at 100% - it occupies the correct position, but is squashed to the left instead of spreading out. Other factors 1 This worked OK in my earlier version of OO I was using until this release was brought out. WHen I use this release to export older documents, the Scaled Width text is now corrupted as above 2 When I print the odt file using PrimoPDF (a pdf file creator) the scaled text is correct. I believe this is a bug introduced into this release of Writer. Since OOo 3, Calc supports the range/reference operators:
: (range), ! (intersection), and ~ (list/concatenation/union)
However the INDIRECT function fails if its argument contains a range that uses
any of these, giving #REF! or Err:502.
E.g. the following formulas should all give the same result:
=SUM(A1:B1)
=SUM(A1~B1)
=SUM(INDIRECT("A1:B1"))
=SUM(INDIRECT("A1~B1"))
but the last one fails with Err:502.

problem. For one, those threads that now have a null context class loader are
those attached to the JVM through incoming JNI calls and those in turn spawned
from them; so, if there is a problem with the event dispatch thread having a
null context class loader, this would imply the event dispatch thread was
spawned from such a native thread attached to the JVM, so we would be back to
square one. For another, some scenarios (like
javax.xml.xpath.XPathFactory.newInstance() or new JEditorPane()) need not even
happen in the event dispatch thread.
The only two ways out I see are:
1 Back out the changes to jmvaccess::VirtualMachine::AttachGuard again for now
(i.e., do set a context class loader for attached threads again) and either live
with the performance degradation in Base for now or somehow modify Base so that
it calls the AttachGuard not around individual Java calls, but around larger
quantities of such calls combined (diminishing the negative impact of the
setContextClassLoader call per AttachGuard creation). Later, once every code
using the context class loader anywhere would be fixed properly, the backed-out
changes could be put back into AttachGuard.
2 Back out the changes to jvmaccess::VirtualMachine::AttachGuard again and
offer an additional interface ("jvmaccess::VirtualMachine::FastAttachGuard")
that does not set the context class loader, and change the Base code to call
FastAttachGuard instead of AttachGuard.
I would prefer 1 over 2: In an ideal, correct world, we would only need the
fixed version of AttachGuard (that does not set a context class loader).
Solution 1 could be turned into such a solution once the world is cleaned up, by
just changing the implementation of AttachGuard. Solution 2, on the other hand,
would have to introduce a new FastAttachGuard as a sort of a hack to the stable
URE API, and could not remove it again once it becomes unnecessary.

If you delete 99 sheets with the user interface, no problem. If you delete 99 pages by API there is a memory loss of 300 Mbytes, recovered when you close or reload the document after execution. Deleting more sheets (e.g. 200) may use all memory. On version 2.4.3 the same code consumes "only" 80Mbytes. No memory consumption with good old version 1.1.5, and it runs quicker.
