If we set the warn about transparency on by default any time that the user selects PDF/A we could solve the problem you talk about. The user will receive the warning if he didn't force the warning supression and automated processes will work. About your second coment... I don't think this to be a good idea. IMHO applying your idea as a general rule, would force integrators to make an additional effort developing things outside OO which are already developed inside OO and which would require additional future maintenance. This goes against those which are making OpenOffice a way to make bussines which is, at the end, one of the elements which makes a product to be successful. Have in mind that, when integrators use OO for automation, OO runs usually in a headless machine and is the administrator who changes the OO options in order to change the automation behavior. Let me explain: The case is that, using OO as a server, no user interface dialogs must be shown, as this would stop the server with no remote client notification. But I don't know what's better. Managing this kind of warnings dialog by dialog (as Im proposing here with the checkbox), or managing this at some higher level which could forbide or simply obbey user dialogs when OO is working on headless mode or, could be, considering a user dialog launching as an error when in headless mode... Of course, this looks that, for that case, the simplest way would be to implement the check box as the other options looks to be much more complex to implement, but... What do you think? While not productive to add the comment here, I cannot resist: - a warning (on opening a document) that substitution is taking place. No, that will not get my support. The user usually doesn't care /that/ much to be annoyed with a dialog she has to click away. - an option to turn off all substitution and live with black boxes or boxes with the Unicode codepoint number in them. Make it an environment variable if that's easier That again is a very, very unlikely szenario for a user. I doubt anyone would like to have an unreadable document. This is the wrong cure to the real problem. You probably think of this as a way to spot the places where fallback did occur, but IMHO this is a very bad way to deal with it. - an indication in the font dropdown box that substitution is taking place (at the cursor position / in the selection). A symbol, different color, anything. The dropdown probably is the wrong place, as the user (when creating a document) will not see non-installed fonts there, so cannot chose a non-installed font other than by typing in the fonts name. In that case, the user already knows the font is not available, and is actually explicitly requesting fallback in that case. - a way to search for substituted glyphs / fonts Yes, that's closed to a workable solution. I'd think of a notification in the statusbar. green no substitution in place, orange glyph fallback, red font-fallback (just states, not real design proposal :-)) click on it and get a list similar to Font notavailable is replaced by font installedfont. For the glyph fallback this is harder, as you cannot simply put the character in the UI, since very likely the ui font will not contain that symbol either, so either use unicode codepoints or a highlight all font replacements and highlight all glyph fallbacks function. IMHO the glyph fallback one is more important, as single alien characters within text stand out more, than whole paragraphs/document in the same (replacement) font. Nah, I know what the problem is here.
Take a .odt with notes in it and that has compatibility options on to use
printer metrics. Load it up. file-print, change the printer. Doomage looms
after this on the next time that a note has to be redrawn to screen.

because the document is using printer metrics this getReferenceDevice returns
the original printer OutputDevice from SwDoc::getPrinter. When we change the
printer from the print dialog that calls SwDoc::setPrinter and deletes that old
OutputDevice so the postit outliner is now left using a deleted OutputDevice.
Presumably when we're not using printer metrics and using the virtual device the
possibility of a SwDoc::setVirtualDevice being called that deletes the old
virtual device is sufficiently rare that, with this being the default for new
documents, its rare or impossible to delete the outputdevice from out under the
postit outliner in that mode.
So the question is, why do we bother setting a Reference device for the notes
outliner ? The default one from the svx pool would presumably be fine and should
always exist and not get destroyed before the outliner does. We're only drawing
to the margin window on screen so we don't need to follow any specific printer
metrics to achieve that, right ? and makes things safer and easier.

This one is definitely too complex to have it for 3.2.1 release. About 1400 lines of code had to be touched for this fix and the QA has already found a lot of regressions (the CWS went three times back from QA to DEV) and we cannot be sure that this is finally over now looking at the complexity of changes for this issue. So it would be a much better idea to have this in a 3.3 build so that we have enough time and resources to test such a complex fix in a meaningful way.
