This a more of an Excel problem than a OOo-Base issue.
But I would like to see this feature first come OOo than a MS-Product.

At work I do a lot of data processing.
User generally sent me data in an MS-Excel or CSV format.
They have MS-Access on their PC, but still they use MS-Excel format.
As Excel never insist to define or use consistent data type on a column, there
are a lot of crap data, which causes lot of problems while processing data.

I wish Office App vendors make layout and navigation of their database module
much similar to a spreadsheet layout.

My Suggestion:-
When user start database module we may present a in memory database with few
tables having blank record as mentioned in Issue 104873

(see attachment below)
Then the opening screen can have an Accordion/Tree control showing like
* Tables
  - Table1
  - Table2
  - Table3
* Queries
  - Query1
  - Query2
* Forms
  - Form1
  - Form2
  - Form3
* Reports
  - Report1

User can double click any object (Table1, Table2 ... or Query) it will open as a
tab on right side.

There should also be a new Object button if user want to create a new database
object. New table object always comes with 10 case-insensitive text fields with
10 to 20 blank rows.

Later user should have an option to rename the table by right clicking on tab
and choosing rename in context menu. Table structure can be modified by
selecting Design from the context menu.

For fields, user should have an option to rename it by right clicking the fields
column header and choosing rename in context menu. Other field properties can be
modified by selecting Design from the context menu.

This Design screen is same as Table Design screen with the chosen field as
currently selected field.
Also both Design screens should NOT be popups.
Instead it will be shown in the same Tab of corresponding
table/view/form/report.
There should be also a button on design screen to switch back to data view.
This functionality (switch back to data view) is same as current OOo Base Query
view.

Once user finished working with a table, query, form or report there showed be
an x button to close the opened tab.

Automatic font substitution for missing unicode glyph

In firefox we can go to http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buridan%27s_ass
and copy the Malayalam text and paste to
http://www.mozilla.org/editor/midasdemo/
Firefox will display Malayalam letters properly.

But if paste the same in OpenfOffice, it wont be displayed properly

Steps:-
1. Ensure you have Malayalam Unicode font
   (get Anjali from https://sites.google.com/site/cibu/ )

2. In firefox goto
   http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buridan%27s_ass

3. Copy Malayalam text

4. Open new document in OpenfOffice

5. Paste contents to new OOo document

Result:-
Text seen as a string of boxes

Expected:-
  Malayalam text properly displayed

PS: Firefox has done this, they faced many issues while implementing this
so it will better, if OOo team can discuss with Firefox team
and avoid those issues, you can see some of those issues listed at
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=361783

I wish vendors make a much more user friendly database module in their Office
Applications.

So here is my suggestion to make Base more user friendly.

* When user start OOo Base dont prompt for a file name.
Just like the way we do in Writer and Calc, open up a blank in memory database
with name Untitled.

* this in-memory db should contain 3 tables named table1, table2, table3
(there should be a preference setting to say how many tables need to be created
automatically)

* each new table should by default have 10 string fields named field1,
field2...field10

* each new table should by default have 10 blank records

* when exiting OOo Base or saving database, base module should promt for
database name.

Web search on openoffice products context menu.

While editing or view a OOo doc/calc/presentation, it may be nice to have a
facility to search for more information on word or phrase at Wikipedia or at
Merriam-Webster.

Is it possible to add something like the one on mockup screenshot at.
http://osbash.blogspot.com/2008/08/web-search-on-openoffice.html

Dont do it free, make partnership with search portals.
We will happy to use it, at provide income for OOo.

PS: Similar one for Thunderbird

MS Word has this feature in it, but OpenOffice does not.

The way MS Word implemented this is many times irritating.
When user move cursor up and down some times the lowercase letters turn to
uppercase.

I many times get documents from co-workers with tables where some cell start
with lowercase letter and other with uppercase letter, often the culprit is the
automatic case change.

So when implementing this feature be careful when you change case automatically.

Ideally I feel case change should occur soon after the first letter is
pressed, not when first word is written per current implementation.

Also after case change user should get a chance to press Ctrl-Z to undo
automatic case change.

PS: at office I have that feature turned off in MS-Word, to avoid corrupting
data accidentally.

Now auto cell name insertion in formula by navigating using arrow keys many
times corrupts formula entered.

Enhancement should be made in the auto cell name insertion logic not insert if
cursor is in the middle of something.
ie, if character before or after the cursor point is in the range of
/[A-Za-z0-9]/

Steps:-
1. insert formula in cell B2 as =AVERAGE(number)
2. bring mouse over word AVERAGE on formula
3. and click between E and R
4. now move the mouse over cell B5
5. click on cell B5

result:
* user see formula got corrupts as =AVEB5RAGE(number)
  see attachment ooo_formula_entry.png

expected:
* formula should stay as =AVERAGE(number)

At present in OOo Calc if you try to edit a cell which is a part of an array.
user get a message You cannot change only part of an array
A better feedback would have been giving an option to select the entire array.

Steps:-
1. in OOo Calc goto cell B3
2. enter formula ={1;2;3}
3. press ctrl+shift+enter to enter array data
4. move to cell B3 again
5. try to edit cell content by
   a) either pressing F2 key,
   b) or by double clicking cell B3

Result:-
* user get message You cannot change only part of an array
* clicking OK goes back to cell B3 after doing nothing

see: ooo_edit_array_cell.png

Expected:-
* user should get message asking

  = Edit array ?
You are trying to edit part of an array.
to edit an array you have to select whole array.

Do you want select whole array?

  [Select] [Cancel]

Calc dont allow to enter formula where first parameter as optional.

Steps:-
1. add following list2array macro to My Macro module
2. put a break point on if ismissing(separator) or line
3. come back to Calc to enter formula
4. enter =LIST2ARRAY(;;2)

Result actual:-
Error message prompt
OpenOffice.org Calc found an error in the formula entered.
Do you want to accept the correction proposed below?
see attachment: ooo_first_optional.png

Result Expected:-
OpenOffice.org Calc should accept the formula as it is and processes.
As it will valid to have the first parameter missing per the macro declaration.

(PS: related issue 88491)

Fix for issue 51662 may fix this.
But 51662 is only talking about the decimals

As issue 50670, issue 39898, issue 38494, issue 31663, issue 45312, issue 1820
are similar and some of them are fixed, but it did not automatically fix issue
51662. Hence I am little skeptical about this getting fixed automatically when
51662 get fixed.

So I am reopening this and adding this as depended to 51662, we should only
close this after testing and find it got fixed.

Sub: Formula bar: ability to set default date format on formula bar.

On my OS date format is -MM-dd
And the worksheet cell format is -MM-DD

Still OOo Calc show content on formula bar in an alien date format.
I also dont see any option in Tools Options to set default date display format
for the whole sheet.
* I believe Lotus 123 use to have workbook date format setting.
* MS-Excel follow system date format.

Steps:-
1. Goto MS-Windows start menu
2. Goto Control Panel Regional and Language Options
3. Select Regional Options tab
4. Select Customize... button (see attachment RegionalOptions.png)
5. Goto Customize Regional Options screen, then Date tab
5. Set Date format to -MM-dd
6. Click OK on Customize Regional Options
7. click Apply on Regional and Language Options screen
8. Start OOo Calc
9. Select a Cell
10. from menu select Format Cells..
11. on Numbers tab
12. enter format code as -MM-DD
13. click OK to come back to the data entry mode
14. enter 2007-11-30
15. Press Enter Key
16. up arrow to select date again
17. on formula bar you see 11/30/2007 (see attachement OOoCalcDate.png)

Expected date format 2007-11-30
as in MS-Excel (see excel.png)

BTW:
Issue 30216 for Writer says there is a way to set default date format (may not
for formula bar) but I dont see it in OOo Calc 2.3.1
I would have expected it in menu under General settings
... Tools
... ... Options ...
... ... ... Openoffice.org
... ... ... ... General here
... ... ... Openoffice.org Calc
... ... ... ... General or here

I can select entire sheet and select Format cells to choose format as
-MM-DD, but it change all numeric cell including percent and dollor cells to
date format. Which is not as I expected.

Sub: Copy while whole column selected should trim trailing cells

When user select whole column and do a copy (I used Ctrl+C) Calc now copy 65537
lines to clipboard, even though all the cells after first few rows are empty.

MS-Excel (tested on Excel 2003) will stop copy after last non-empty row + 1

This difference in behavior is also there when we do whole row select.

Current OOo Calc behavior is dangerous,
if user do Edit Paste Special Unformated text

Can we make Calc behave like the Excel way?

Also I want to mention, when all the cells in current selection are either in
single row or in single column MS-Excel do this trimming. I dont know whether
that is good. As it is different from the way MS-Excel do copy when an area with
cells from multiple column and multiple row is selected. ie, an area selection
in MS-Excel copies all cells including empty cells.

Steps:-
** On MS-Excel
1. Open MS-Excel
2. Fill A1:B10 with some text
3. Select whole column A and B
4. copy using ctrl+c
5. Go to Notepad
6. Do Paste
7. See result with 11 lines
8. Open MS-Word
9. Do Paste
10. See result with a table with 11 lines

** On OOo Calc
** repeat same by
1. Open OOo Calc
2. Fill A1:B10 with some text
3. Select whole column A and B
4. copy using ctrl+c
5. Go to Notepad
6. Do Paste
7. See pasted contents with 65537 lines
8. Open OOo Writer
9. Do Paste Special UnFormatted Text
10. See system HANGS!!!, ie, waiting for converting 65537 lines
